The Chevrolet Corvette C8 is awesome in it of itself. With 495 horsepower on tap in the Z51 guise, the 2020 Vette can set a blistering pace, taking only three seconds to go from 0 to 60 mph. So if a 495-horsepower Corvette C8 Z51 is already capable of such speeds, imagine what a 736-horsepower Corvette C8 is capable of when it goes under the tuning ringer.

Extreme Turbo Systems — the name says it all — recently worked on a bone stock Corvette C8 Z51 with the goal of raising its power to supercar levels. The tuning firm even released a video of the Vette C8 strapped to a dyno rig, undergoing serious testing. The video isn’t particularly exciting, but make no mistake about it, this Corvette C8 Z51 isn’t your typical 2020 Corvette. You might even say that this Vette can give the Lamborghini Aventador S a serious run for its money.

What’s the down-low on the Chevrolet Corvette C8?

Chevrolet unveiled the new-generation Corvette C8 in July 2019, and it immediately took the world by storm. It is, after all, the first-ever mid-engine Chevrolet Corvette in history.

Most of the hype has gone in the direction of the Corvette C8’s range-toppers, specifically the ZR1. Thing is, the ZR1 isn’t expected to arrive until later this year, or maybe next year depending on how the global coronavirus pandemic has affected Chevy’s timetable. This leaves us with the base Corvette C8, which still packs a wallop, producing 495 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. This allows the mid-engine Corvette C8 Z51 to sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just three seconds on its way to a top speed of 184 mph.

The numbers are impressive, but as with any base model, the Corvette Z51 still packs plenty of untapped potential that aftermarket tuners like Extreme Turbo Systems can play around with.

What kind of aftermarket program did Extreme Turbo Systems prepare for the Corvette C8 Z51?

The full scope of Extreme Turbo Systems’ aftermarket program isn’t known, in part because the tuner hasn’t disclosed all of it yet. What we do know is that the Washington-based tuning company has a couple of turbochargers prepped for use on the Corvette’s LT2 engine. We catch a glimpse of what a twin-turbocharged LT2 engine is capable of in this video provided by the tuning firm, showing the tuned Corvette Z51 strapped on a chassis dyno and undergoing some serious test runs.

To be clear, the video doesn’t show the Corvette performing an acceleration run. It doesn’t even move much on the dyno. But we do get to hear what it sounds like when it’s packing significantly more power than the stock C8 Corvette Z51.

How Much Power Does A Turbocharged C8 Corvette Make?

The video shows the Corvette Z51 doing three tests on the chassis dyno, sounding very much like a sports car with some extra juice in it. The readout confirms it as the first run shows the Vette producing a walloping 728 horsepower to the wheels. With an estimated driveline loss of about 12 percent, you’re looking at a C8 Z51 that’s producing 830 horsepower at the crankshaft. Impressive!

The video shows two more test runs with the second showing 726 horsepower while the third run nets an insane 736 horsepower and 669 pound-feet of torque rampaging at the wheels.

This Corvette Z51 has graduated beyond stock levels, folks. Extreme Turbo Systems even claims that this is the first tuned Corvette C8 to exceed 700 horsepower, and while that's hard to verify given the number of aftermarket companies that have developed kits for the mid-engine Corvette that don't publicize their programs as much as other tuners do, it's still an impressive return for a sports car whose engine barely reaches 500 horsepower.
