2016 Chicago Auto Show – Best And Worst In Show
The gates are open at the 2016 Chicago Auto Show, and with those pesky journalists finally out of the way, the public can now enjoy all the vehicular goodness that North America’s “largest” auto show can muster. Special editions, refreshes, and brand-new models all dropped cover this year, with crossovers and SUVs served up as the main course, and new sedans and sports cars added as a tasty side dish. Picking winners and losers here is not exactly easy, but hey, this isn’t some elementary school talent show. Time to be ruthless.
There were a few clear standouts for Best In Show right from the start, but cutthroat competition to fill the remaining slots quickly followed. Picking vehicles for Worst In Show was also pretty tricky, but that’s why they pay me the big bucks.
So, without further ado…

2016 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD Z71 Midnight Edition
Chevrolet has released three new additions to its “Midnight Edition” lineup for 2016, including the Colorado Z71, Silverado Z71, and this, the Silverado 2500 HD Z71. Like the Colorado and Silverado 1500, the Silverado 2500 HD gets an all-black, monochromatic look to match its off-road abilities provided by the Z71 package. It continues to offer all the same equipment and features found on the 2500 HD Z71, along with carryover drivetrain options.
Of the three Chevy trucks, the Silverado 2500 HD is the right choice for those who haul or tow heavy loads and need the extra capability the Chevy HD line provides. This includes stiffer springs front and rear, shorter gear ratios, beefy transmission options, and the choice between a 6.0-liter gasoline V-8 and the venerable 6.6-liter Duramax V-8 turbodiesel. The 2500 HD rides on a fully boxed, hydroformed frame constructed from high-strength steel.
Unlike the Colorado, the Silverado’s Z71 package is an option package rather than a trim level, meaning it can be had with a variety of trim levels. Opt for the Midnight Edition, however, and you’re limited to the mid-grade LT trim. That’s not a disadvantage, however, as the LT offers plenty of amenities and interior features.

2016 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 Midnight Edition
Chevrolet is no stranger to special editions. It seems like nearly every one of its models can be had with some sort of special option package or unique edition. The tradition continues at the 2016 Chicago Auto Show as Chevy debuts the 2016 Colorado Z71 Midnight Edition.
Chevrolet actually debuted a Midnight Edition for the 2016 Colorado back in August of 2015, though it was limited to the LT trim levels. Now customers can choose the Midnight Edition on their Z71-trimmed Colorado – a truck that is built for off-roading.
Like the “standard” Midnight Edition, the Colorado Z71 Midnight Edition comes with blacked-out everything. Save for the headlights, fog lights, and a handful of chrome accents, the truck is black. In keeping with its Z71 trim, the 17-inch, five-spoke wheels are wrapped in Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tires for all-terrain traction. The Eaton G80 locking rear differential is standard while 4WD is optional. Tow hooks and skid plates finish off the Z71’s rugged image.
The Z71 Colorado is available with either the 3.6-liter V-6 or the 2.8-liter Duramax four-cylinder turbodiesel. Both engines are unchanged by addition of the Midnight Edition package, and come mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Z71 Midnight Special Edition
The SUV and pickup segments in the U.S. are in the midst of their long awaited renaissance, as sales of these types of vehicles have steadily increased in the past couple of years. Chevrolet knows all too well that its top-selling model is a pickup. To be more specific, it’s the Silverado. The numbers certainly back it up. In 2015, Chevrolet sold a total of 600,544 units, according to GM Authority. That’s more than double the sales compared to the Chevrolet Equinox, the second-place car on that list with “just” 277,589 units sold in 2015. The Silverado’s sales momentum has even extended into the first month of 2016 when the the pickup once again set the pace for all Chevy models with 37,863 units sold in January.
Chevy has acknowledged that the popularity of the Silverado can be attributed to a variety of things, and one of those things, albeit not as large scale as others, has been the introduction of special edition versions like the Midnight Special Edition. The popularity of the Silverado Midnight Edition was evident from the start, as Sandor Piszar, Chevrolet’s truck marketing director, indicated when he said that the demand for the model “outstripped supply in a matter of months” and that it “made sense to expand the Midnight Edition and add new models into the fold.” So, beginning in 2016, the Chevy Silverado 1500 LT Z71 is set to join the current crop of Midnight Edition models alongside fellow debutante, the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado Z71.
With both models in the fold, customers now have the opportunity to have their pick of midsize, light-duty, and heavy-duty Midnight editions, each coming with plenty of new features and equipment.

The Chevrolet Equinox made its debut as the company’s new compact SUV in 2005, and underwent its first generational overhaul in 2010. Now that we’re set to pass the halfway point of the 2010s, Chevrolet is set to unveil a refreshed version of the second-generation Equinox for the 2016 model year. This new Equinox debuted on February 12, 2015.
There is a lot to take in from this refresh, despite it being more of an evolution of the existing model. What appears to be the goal with this update is an injection of youthfulness to a model that already does pretty well in terms of overall sales. Given it competes in one of the hottest segments in the automotive world, it is no surprise that Chevy was careful in what it changed while still making it noticeably new.

Chevrolet has yet again released another special edition truck, this time at the Chicago Auto Show. The truck combines some of the classy external additives on to the popular mid-grade Silverado LS Double Cab. This volume model carries the upscale looks while keeping its price in check.
This is the third special edition truck Chevy has released as of late. Also at the Chicago Auto Show is the midsize Colorado GearOn Special Edition, which adds some fancy bodywork to a truck tricked out with GM’s innovative bed storage system. The second truck is the Silverado Custom Sport. This special edition truck that debuted at Detroit looks quite similar to the Custom, but is reserved for higher trim levels including LT and LTZ. They’re similar in style, yet different in execution.
So what’s new with the Silverado Custom? Well, not too much, but Chevy says the special edition is for folks who keep their trucks longer than most and who crave something different without breaking the bank.

The 2015 Colorado is one of Chevrolet’s hottest models these days, with the midsize truck causing quite a stir in its segment. The Colorado offers tons of cab, bed, engine, and drivetrain options that give truck buyers the ability to pick a truck to fit their needs. That versatility extends to the Chevrolet’s innovative cargo bed-based GearOn cargo management system.
To help promote its bed management system, Chevy has bundled the GearOn equipment with a few exterior adornments on the truck to make it stand out. While the GearOn system is available on any Colorado or its GMC Canyon twin, neither would come with the added pieces of the bundle.
Those include the off-road assist steps, gloss-black, 18-inch aluminum wheels, a body-colored grille with a blacked out Chevy bowtie along with a matching emblem on the EZ Lift and Lower Tailgate, fog lamps, rear window defogger, and the remote start system.
While the GearOn Special Edition doesn’t come with every GearOn accessory, it does provide the basic system for attaching things like bike, ski, canoe, or surfboard carriers and even a pop-up tent. All the ancillary parts are available at Chevy dealerships.

General Motors is diving deep into the trendy “murdered-out” market these days, especially in the truck segment. Well, Chevrolet has just announced its new Midnight Edition – an all-black sport version of the Silverado. Thankfully this special edition actually adds more than just some swanky paint, unlike the GMC Sierra Elevation Edition. This Silverado comes packed with all the fixin’s from the Z71 off-road package, plus some meaty Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac tires not otherwise found on GM trucks.
As the name suggests, the Midnight Edition comes with a blacked-out grille, bumpers, wheels, mirror caps, door handles, and even bowties. The underlying Z71 package adds some desirable mechanicals like the upgraded suspension, Hill Decent Control, locking rear differential, skid plates, tow hooks, and the trailering package.
The Silverado Midnight Edition joins the ranks of the Chevy Impala Midnight Edition, along with the GMC Canyon Nightfall Edition and the aforementioned Sierra Elevation Edition.
Chevrolet is offering the Midnight Edition on Double-Cab and Crew-Cab Silverado 1500s. Only 5,000 examples are set for production for the 2015 model year. Chevy is charging between $1,595 and $1,995 for the Midnight Edition, depending on the truck model.

Chevy has graced visitors of the Chicago Auto Show with news about its new 2015 City Express van. While we traditionally have a good idea about what is going to be revealed a few days ahead of time, this came out of left field.
The Nissan NV200-based van is little more than a Chevrolet rebadge, but it gives Chevrolet a tool to use against the Ford Transit at a minimal cost.
If you are looking for a smaller way to haul your kids, you are still going to need to look at the Mazda5, as City Express is purely a functional machine. It has two seats, and a load of cargo room; that is it.
Still, there is a lot to love about this little Chevy, so click on through to find out all the details from its drivetrain to its max cargo capacity.
Sports cars continue to infiltrate the silver screen in superhero movies, and now it is the Corvette Stingray’s turn to have a taste of Hollywood fame. In the new "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" movie that is due out on April 4th, Black Widow — one of the many S.H.I.E.L.D. superheros — will drive an all-black 2014 Corvette Stingray.
There are no specifics on this deep, gloss-black `Vette, but it will be on display at the 2014 Chicago Auto Show. Unfortunately, the stunning and dangerous Black Widow herself will not be there. But, Chevy will be passing out a limited-edition Captain America comic book to commemorate the collaboration of Marvel and the Stingray.
On top of the gloss-black paint job, the initial images of the Black Widow Stingray show a set of black rims that help complete this the package. Stay tuned for more details on the 2014 Corvette Stingray Black Widow, but don’t look for a special edition model in dealers, as I’m pretty sure this car is for the movies only.

Clean diesel models are just starting to make their ways into the North American market, and to everyone’s surprise, they do quite well. For example, in the first quarter of 2012, sales numbers were up 35 percent when compared to the same period of 2011 and things continue to improve.
From all diesel units sold in the USA last year, a total of 44 percent where the Jetta TDI, a pretty astounding result, considering this is about half of a market that offers about 25 clean diesel models, which experts say will double by 2017.
The first step into this direction was made at the 2013 Chicago Auto Show where Chevy unveiled the new Cruze Clean Turbo Diesel - not a big surprise considering Cruze is Chevrolet’s hottest-selling sedan.
The model will be put on sale at a starting price at $25,695, which is about $2,500 more than the Jetta TDI priced at $23,055.
UPDATE 6/12/2013: This review has been updated with the official drivetrain specifications. Surprisingly, they are significantly better than GM originally estimated.

When we thought we had seen it all, Chevy unveiled a rather strange Camaro Coupe at the 2013 Chicago Auto Show in order to promote DreamWorks’ new "Turbo" movie, which is set to arrive on July 19, 2013.
Since "Turbo" will be an animated movie, the new Camaro Turbo has been designed accordingly. It gets lower rockers and fender flares, a front splitter and rear diffuser and a GT concept rear wing spoiler. The concept is painted black with a vinyl chrome wrap, but there are numerous multicolor LED light insertions on the front and rear for an intriguing halo effect. The concept sits on a set of huge wheels, sized 24-inches by 10-inches up front and 24-inches by 15-inches on the rear.
Under the hood, the V-8 engine has been tricked to deliver a monstrous 700 horsepower, thanks to the addition of a supercharger system and a new exhaust system with five-inch-diameter pipes.
