2018 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray: Fresh Options, Familiar Sticker
We’re big fans of the latest seventh-generation Chevrolet Corvette, even naming the 650-horse monster machine Z06 our Performance Car of the Year when it was first released in 2014. But now that we’re three years into production, its time for a little refresh. As such, the Bowtie is shaking up the options list, while keeping that old bargain pricing static.
Updates for the 2018 model year include a slew of aesthetic changes, as well as a few updates to the performance side of things. Outside, you’ll find standard staggered wheel sizing with an extra inch in diameter (20 inches in back, 19 inches in front). The new wheels come from the Z51 package, and there are new wheel designs on the table as well. A new Ceramic Matrix Gray exterior paint option replaces the outgoing Sterling Blue. Improvements inside include updates for the heads-up display and rearview camera, while the infotainment now comes with HD digital radio as standard. New interior colors were added to the 2LT trim level, while a Spice Red finish was added to the convertible top colors list. Spice Red was also added to the list of interior finishes for the 3LT and 3LZ trim levels. Go for the Jet Black suede interior, and you’ll get carbon fiber on the steering wheel and various trim bits. Corvette Z06 Owners File Class-Action Lawsuit Against GM Over Performance Issues
Chevrolet Corvette Z06 owners have filed a class-action lawsuit against General Motors for overheating issues that cause the sports car to go into "limp mode" after only 15 minutes of track use. The lawsuit, filed in June by automaker-suing firm Hagens Berman, claims that a cooling system malfunction can put the Corvette Z06 into "limp mode," which drastically reduces the car’s power and speed. After only 15 minutes, which is by no means what you expect when you buy a car that can cost in excess of $100,000. What’s more, it turns out that the Z06 can go into limp mode on public roads too, which eliminates the scenario that this is an issue for customers who take their sports car to the track.
As is it the case with cooling system defects, the issue is also prone to do damage to important engine components, which adds costly repair bills to an already frustrating experience. The issue affects model-year 2015 to 2017 cars and Hagens Berman estimates that around 30,000 units may suffer from this problem. The lawsuit also claims that General Motors breached state and federal laws and it seeks financial damages for the owners.

2017 Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback – Driven
The Chevrolet Cruze has undergone some big changes in the last two years. For 2016, the sedan moved into its second generation by hitting the gym for weight reduction and added muscle. Now for 2017, Chevy has added a hatchback version complete with all the upgrades introduced a year before. I got the chance to spend a week behind the wheel of Chevy’s new hatch, surmising the little bowtie is darn good at hauling people and their stuff.
Admittedly smitten, I’d venture to say the Cruze Hatchback is a better choice than most compact crossovers. The data proves it, at lease objectively in regards to fuel economy and interior volume. Subjectively, the Cruze Hatch feels light on its feet and doesn’t mind being thrown into a turn. No, the Cruze Hatch’s 1.4-liter turbo-four is hardly a monster, but it appropriately balances power with efficiency. It’s hard to complain about 38 mpg highway, even when the sprint to 60 mph takes nearly eight seconds. So, what’s it like to live with? Find out below.

The 2017 Chevy Cruze Hatch is Better than a Crossover
It’s no secret crossovers and SUVs are sweeping vehicle sales numbers across the country. Americans are buying these high-riding, unibodied wagons like never before and automakers are responding with even more models. It seems the humble sedan’s days are numbered. But crossovers are inherently compromised – their high center of gravity and sloppy on-road handling not rewarded with off-road capability as with traditional SUVs. The crossover is the cotton candy of the automotive world; all fluff and sugar with no substance. But there’s a better way to get loads of cargo volume without killing on-road drivability. Enter: the hatchback. And perhaps the best and newest example is the 2017 Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback.
I’d wager the average Joe and Suzie Carbuyer bought their crossover because it looks cool and offers more interior room than the sedan they traded, while getting better gas mileage than the Chevy Suburban the really wanted but couldn’t afford. Their crossover acts as the happy median and everybody is satisfied. But are they really? Their crossover compromise in every imaginable sense. Suzie misses the cheap fuel bill their sedan provided and Joe wishes for better control when taking Interstate off-ramps. But they pretend to be happy because they don’t know any better. 2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE
Unveiled for the 2017 model year, the sixth-generation Camaro ZL1 is by far the most impressive Camaro with forced-induction built to date. Powered by the the same LT4 engine introduced with the Corvette Z06, the latest ZL1 packs 650 horsepower, looks incredibly menacing, and costs a little more than $60,000, an amazing sticker given the performance. But, as incredible as it may sound, Chevrolet just managed to the make ZL1 even better by giving it the 1LE upgrade.
Previously available on the SS model, the 1LE package was just made available for the V-6 version too for the sixth-generation Camaro. Now, Chevy devised a similar package for the ZL1 and claims that the supercharged 1LE is the most track-capable Camaro ever, meaning it should outgun the bonkers (and now discontinued) Z/28 too. These claims are backed by racing-based suspension and aero technologies, as well as exclusive Goodyear Eagle F1 tires, and a range of weight-saving measure. How powerful and fast is it? The 2017 Chevy Cruze is No Missile
This week finds a 2017 Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback sitting in my driveway, which is honestly exciting. Sure, it’s no supercar or attention-grabbing luxury barge, but it’s the successor to my wife’s car, a 2012 Chevy Cruze LT. Being slightly self-serving, the wife and I went for a drive to see how the new Cruze stacks up. Who knows, perhaps the new Cruze Hatch could satisfy her craving for a crossover with more room. Things were going well, but it didn’t take long to discover the new Cruze feels doggishly slow.
How can this be? Chevy reengineered the Cruze from the lugnuts up for 2016 with a lighter chassis and lighter drivetrain components, including the supposedly more powerful 1.4-liter EcoTec four-cylinder turbo. Those changes carry over to the new-for-2017 Cruze Hatchback, including the all-aluminum EcoTec’s 153 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque. Her Cruze’s iron-block 1.4-liter turbo only makes 138 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque. Chevy says the Cruze Hatch weighs roughly 2,900 pounds. That’s a big reduction from the 2012 Cruze’s curb weight of 3,126 pounds. So what gives?

2017 Chevrolet Cruze RS - Driven
The Chevrolet Cruze was not hurting for fans. As its first generation neared the end of its run in 2014, Cruze sales reached their high point, with more than 273,000 copies sold. Curious, then, that the Cruze suffered a setback in sales when it was redesigned in 2016 for the 2017 model year. Having spent a week with it recently, I can say that confuses me. The Cruze got sexy new sheet metal, a more-efficient powertrain, a new hatchback model, and improved ride and handling when it was redesigned. Yet, it sold fewer than 200,000 copies for the first time ever in 2016, if you don’t count its late introduction in 2010 when it was on sale for just three months. So, what gives?

GM Debuting Two New Crossovers at Detroit
General Motors is set to debut two, all-new crossovers at the 2017 North American International Auto Show in Detroit come January. The news comes from a source with knowledge of GM’s plans who spoke under anonymity to Automotive News. The two crossers will be the 2018 Chevrolet Traverse and 2017 GMC Terrain.
The two family friendly vehicles are the oldest crossovers the GM’s fleet, with both dating back to GM’s 2009 bankruptcy days. In the years since, GM has focused on improving its pickup truck, large SUV, and sedan lineups. Attention has now turned to crossovers.
The first member of GM’s new generation of crossover is already selling at dealerships: the 2017 GMC Acadia. It rides on the C1XX platform shared with the 2017 Cadillac XT5. The 2017, second-generation Acadia is smaller than its predecessor, but still has three rows of seating for up to seven passengers. The same platform update is expected for the next generation Chevy Traverse, however it’s expected to retain its larger size.
As for the GMC Terrain, it will debut with a new platform shared with recently released 2018 Chevy Equinox. Both are likely to share the same powertrain options, which include a 1.5-liter turbo-four, a 2.0-liter turbo-four, and a 1.6-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder.
These updated crossovers should find great success as consumer trends have shifted towards crossovers. Even at their current age, GM sold 119,945 Traverses and 112,030 Terrains in 2015.

First Drive: 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1
The sixth-generation Camaro’s hottest performance variant to date is gradually arriving in Chevy showrooms as the last few weeks of December roll out. This supercharged coupe is often called a four-seat Corvette Z06 – and for good reason. The ZL1 shares much of the Z06’s technology, including the supercharged 6.2-liter LT4 V-8. Luckily I know a guy with a sparkling new example sitting in his garage, parked next to his Concours-quality 1972 Camaro Z/28.
With less than 500 miles on the ZL1’s odometer, the high-strung car is 1,000 miles short of its GM-recommended break-in period. Then meant no high-speed runs, burnouts, or hard pulls past 4,000 rpm. The warranty depends on it. Nevertheless, I set out to get a feel of the Camaro ZL1’s infamous character.
Not surprisingly, the ZL1 feels remarkably like the Camaro SS I took across country during Chevy’s “Find New Roads” campaign when the sixth-gen Camaro launched last year. (Read about that adventure here.) The narrow windows, low roof, and high waist line gives the sensation of a cocoon, while the view over the long hood and low seating position solidify the car as something special. The heavily bolstered Recaro seats and the blatantly audible supercharger whine, on the other hand, set the ZL1 apart from the SS.
From behind the Alcantara-covered, flat-bottomed steering wheel, the Camaro ZL1 feels lighter and nimbler than its fifth-generation predecessor. Toggle the Performance Traction Management system into Sport mode, and the car tenses up like an Olympic sprinter at the starting line. The steering becomes more taught, the throttle becomes twitchier, the ride becomes firmer, and the dual-mode exhaust opens up. The change isn’t just mental – the PTM modes make aggressive changes to the ZL1’s behavior that are clearly felt.

2017 Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback
Chevrolet has announced its newest model ahead of the 2016 North American International Auto show, the 2017 Cruze Hatchback. Technically already roaming other parts of the globe, the Cruze Hatchback is making its first appearance in the U.S. thanks to spreading acceptance and growing sales of hatchbacks in the States.
“With nine percent market growth in small hatchbacks last year, it’s the perfect time to bring the Cruze Hatch to America,” said Alan Batey, president of General Motors North America and Global Chevrolet. “As Cruze continues to set the tone for Chevrolet globally, it articulates the brand promise of offering cars with the latest technologies, more features and greater efficiency, performance and safety with fresh, distinctive styling.”
The hatchback version of Chevy’s best-selling global car rides on the same all-new platform found under the 2016 Cruze. It also features the same vastly improved interior, updated powertrain, and continues undercutting the previous Cruze’s curb weight.
The 2017 Cruze Hatchback will offer all the same high-tech features as its sedan brother, as well, including MyLink with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, heated seats front and rear, a heated steering wheel, projector-beam headlights with LED accents, and an interior that features French stitching and available leather surfaces.
In the safety department, the Cruze Hatchback offers Lane Keep Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Side Blind Zone Alert, and Rear Park Assist. Parents can even keen an eye their teen driver with the available Teen Driver feature, which provides driving statistics.
Update 06/16/2016: Chevrolet has announced prices for the 2017 Cruze Hatchback will start at $22,190, making it $195 more expensive than the Cruze LT sedan. The 2017 Cruze Hatchback will go on sale in the fall of 2016.

2016 Chevrolet Cruze Tron Legacy Edition
Chevrolet has made its presence felt at the 2016 Beijing Motor Show, but it’s not for the reasons you might think. Sure, SUVs and electric cars have dominated the scene in Auto China, but the American automaker brought one car that’s neither SUV nor electric. You might recognize it as a Chevrolet Cruze and while it is a Cruze for all intents and purposes, it’s actually a one-off, showpiece that’s been inspired by the 2011 movie Tron: Legacy.
Unofficially, it’s called the Chevrolet Cruze Tron Legacy Edition and it’s a product of a collaboration between Chevrolet and The Walt Disney Company China. So what is a car with ties to Mickey Mouse doing in a place like Auto China? It’s actually simple. For those who may be unaware, Disney’s latest theme park – Shanghai Disney Resort – will be making its grand opening on June 16, 2016. For its part, Chevrolet is the official automotive partner of the theme park and so, to commemorate Disney’s latest theme park – and first in China – Chevy and the Walt Disney Company China teamed up to create the Cruze Legacy Tron Edition as a tribute to both Disney itself and the 2011 sci-fi movie.
True to its roots, the Cruze Legacy Tron Edition is littered with styling nods to the iconic light cycles that were used in the movie. The exterior and interior of the Cruze both received the same two-tone, metallic blue on black finish, the same two colors associated to the light cycles. It may not be the most important vehicle that has been showcased in Auto China, but for the purposes of raising awareness and driving up publicity ahead of Disney Shanghai Resort’s highly anticipated opening in June 2016, the Cruze Tron Legacy Edition might as well be the only car of consequence to show up in Beijing.

2016 Chevrolet Cruze
The Chevy Cruze is essentially GM’s modern version of the Chevy Cavalier here in the U.S. It replaced the Chevy Cobalt in 2008 and saw two updates before being redesigned for the 2016 model year. When the second-generation Cruze debuted for the North American market, it grew in length and width and came with sportier styling cues. The most dominate change came in the form of new headlights, a reshaped nose and new character lines on the sides. On the inside, there is a little more room thanks to the slightly larger size. The infotainment system has been upgraded to Chevy’s second-generation MyLink infotainment system with a 7-inch screen, Android Auto, and Apple Carplay as standard equipment. Furthermore, the car now comes with heated seats in the front and rear as well as a heated steering wheel. Under the hood, we see more improved as Chevy is now offering the Cruze with a 1.4-liter engine that delivers 153 horsepower, 177 pound-feet of torque, and offers a combined fuel economy of 32 mpg.
The second-generation Cruze also brought a change to the lineup as well. The L and LS trim levels carry over, and the LT trim is now a combination of the LT1 and LT2 trims from the previous generation. The LTZ trim was also dropped in favor of the Premier trim as the range-topping model. A six-speed manual will be the only transmission available for the base, L trim. A six-speed manual and a six speed automatic will be available for LS and LT trims, while the Premier trim will be stuck with just the six-speed automatic.
The second-generation model is also spawning a hatchback variant that should be coming for the 2017 model year, and there is still a lot to discuss about this generation as well. With that said, let’s dive on into all the juicy details and see what the 2016 Cruze is all about.
