We’ve been around the industry for quite some time now and for the most part, we know better than to expect the world from the New York Auto Show.
Make no mistake, the event has always generated great attendance, especially since it’s being held at one of the world’s most important cities. But to peg the New York Auto Show in the same level as its counterparts in Geneva and Frankfurt is getting a little too ahead of oneself.
Having said that, this year’s installment of the New York Auto Show is still something that’s worth keeping close eyes on, especially the number of concept cars that are scheduled to be unveiled to the world for the very first time.
Here at Topspeed, we make it a point to give you guys a heads-up on what to expect for these type of shows - call it a preview, if you will - and this year figures to be no different.
There are a number of cars scheduled to be unveiled when the doors of the New York Auto Show are opened on April 22, 2011. It may not be the number we come to expect from Geneva, but as far as quality is concerned, this year’s event figures to have plenty waiting to have their covers pulled off.

After seeing the Sonic Z-Spec Concept at the Detroit Auto Show, we didn’t think it would take too long before Chevrolet revealed the first details on the production version of the car. Now we have them as the production Sonic Z-Spec will be revealed at the 2011 New York Auto Show next week.
The production version will include body-color ground effects (with a silver exhaust tip), contrasting mirror caps and roof spoiler, contrasting upper and lower grille surrounds, and a body graphics package. Additionally, the customer will get a more unique look for their special edition hatchback with a front fascia extension, rocker panel extensions, rear fascia extension, and silver exhaust tip. The interior is left widely untouched with only new aluminum sport pedals and sill plates. The vehicle will be completed with a new set of painted wheels offered in size 16" or 17".
Customers will have to choose from two different color accent packages - "Black Out" or "White Out" - that feature black accents on the Summit White Sonic exterior paint and Summit White accents on the Inferno Orange Sonic.
The 2012 Sonic will carry a 1.8L DOHC inline 4-cylinder unit delivering 135 HP and 125 lb-ft of torque, but customers can also upgrade to an optional 138 HP 1.4L turbocharged inline 4-cylinder. We imagine the Z-Spec package will come with these same engine options.
"The new Z-Spec accessories reinforce Sonic’s fun, youthful spirit," said Rick Scheidt, vice president, Chevrolet marketing. "Customization is particularly important with the customers we believe will gravitate toward the Sonic, and we want to help them make their vehicle look exactly the way they want as easily as possible."
The Sonic Z-Spec package will be available in parts form or as a full package. Prices will be revealed closer to the launch date, but don’t stress too much about the additional up front costs; GM is allowing customers to roll the parts prices into their monthly payment.
Chevrolet’s very successful Cruze sedan will be the first model at the New York Auto Show and will include an RS package. The new RS package will be available for LT and LTZ trim levels.
The package includes unique fascias, rocker moldings, a rear spoiler, and fog lamps. The interior gets chrome accent rings in place of the standard silver finish, as well as opaque cluster bezels that allow the cluster’s ice blue backlighting to shine through – providing a sporty nighttime appearance.

Next to the Cruze RS, Chevrolet will also unveil an Eco version for the sedan at the New York Auto Show. The Chevrolet Cruze Eco is powered by a 1.4 liter Ecotec turbocharged engine with variable valve timing and will go on sale in the fourth quarter of 2010.
The 1.4 liter Ecotec engine paired with a six-speed manual transmission has a fuel economy of 40 mpg on the highway. The Cruze Eco will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in about 10 seconds with the manual transmission and 9 seconds with the six-speed automatic.
The car is distinguished by a lower front grille air shutter, lower front air dam extension, extensive use of underbody panels, rear spoiler enhanced aerodynamics, and 17-inch lightweight aluminum wheels.

Inspired by a “half-soldier, half-modern” military helmet, the Chevrolet Groove concept is contemporary and funky, but evokes classic Chevrolet heritage design cues like an upright windshield and prominent fender flares that give the Groove a strong, sturdy stance reminiscent of a retro hot rod.
Injo Kim was inspired by everyday heroes when he led the team that designed the Chevrolet Beat concept, which debuts today at the New York Auto Show.
“Every morning when you wake up, you yearn to be a hero that day,” said Kim, assistant manager of the minicar exterior design team at GM’s Design Center in Inchon, South Korea. And in Kim’s mind, that hero is driving the Beat, Chevrolet’s concept interpretation of a micro import tuner that’s “simple, free and casual, with a strong heart.”
A creative alliance between Chevrolet and Detroit’s College for Creative Studies gave CCS students real-life experience in the competitive world of design and consulting, and provided Chevrolet with a glimpse of what vehicles and brands stir young adults’ souls.
