2018 Chevrolet Corvette Carbon 65 Edition

Chevy celebrates 65 years of Corvette with special-edition package

Launched in 2013, the seventh-generation Corvette adopted a new styling language, GM’s latest in-car technology, and a significantly more upscale interior that finally moved the nameplate to the more premium side of the market. A new V-8 engine was also developed, as well as a redesigned Z06 that packs more horsepower than a Dodge Viper. Following a range of new updates for each model year, the Corvette celebrates its 65th anniversary with the Carbon 65 Edition at the 2017 New York Auto Show.

Wow, I can’t believe that almost 65 years have passed since the Corvette came to be, but yes, the original ’Vette goes back to 1953. Granted, it’s not as big as the 60th and 70th anniversary, but 65 years of making American sports car enthusiasts happy is a great reason to celebrate. And, the Carbon 65 Edition seems like the perfect package for a special event like this. Like the name suggests, the C7 is enhanced by means of carbon-fiber elements, but it also gets a number of unique visuals inside and out.

However, the upgrade isn’t available on just any model, but only on the Grand Sport 3LT and the Z06 3LZ. It’s also limited to only 650 units globally.

“Corvette is one of the most storied names in Chevrolet and sports car history, with a heritage few can match,” said Paul Edwards, U.S. vice president of Chevrolet Marketing. “The new Carbon 65 Edition honors that legacy, while offering customers another unique, special-edition model that personalizes the ownership experience.”

2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

The most powerful Camaro ever built

The 2016 Chevrolet Camaro broke cover in 2015 as a more compact pony that was underpinned by a new, lighter platform and dressed in a familiar, yet refreshed suit. The redesign also brought three new engines, including a fuel-efficient four-banger and the Corvette’s LT1 V-8. Less than a year has passed since the new muscle car made its official debut and Chevrolet has already unveiled the next-generation ZL1.

Seeing how the new Camaro was a significant improvement over its predecessor, the new ZL1 was expected to follow suit and deliver significantly enhanced performance in a more aggressive body and a lighter architecture. Needless to say, enthusiasts won’t be disappointed, as the supercharged coupe delivers more power than any other factory-built Camaro to date and features the most comprehensive aerodynamic package that makes it suitable for busy weekends at the race track. The fact that its about 200 pounds lighter than its predecessor adds to the thrill and sets a new benchmark in the supercharged muscle car market.

Introduced at the 2016 New York Auto Show, the new Camaro ZL1 will hit dealerships later in 2016 as a 2017 model year vehicle.

Update 08/08/2016: Chevrolet dropped the official prices and full specification figures for the 2017 Camaro ZL1 which will be put on sale later this year.

2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Convertible

2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Convertible

Nearly as powerful as the Corvette Z06

The Camaro ZL1 was revived in 2012 after more than 40 years since its initial introduction as a supercharged, range-topping version of the fifth-generation muscle car. Although it had very little in common with its naturally aspirated predecessor, the ZL1 became popular among Chevy enthusiasts who wanted a competitor for the Shelby GT500. While the previous ZL1 arrived two years after the fifth-gen Camaro was launched, the new model made its global debut at the 2016 New York Auto Show, only months after the sixth-gen Camaro broke cover. Alongside the supercharged coupe, Chevy also unveiled the ZL1 Convertible.

Essentially a ZL1 with a canvas roof instead of a metal top, the ZL1 Convertible is currently the only factory-made, supercharged drop-top from the "Big Three." It is also the only track-capable cabriolet made in Detroit, as neither Ford nor Dodge offer similar versions of the Mustang or the Challenger. While the Challenger was conceived as a coupe only, the Mustang is not yet available in GT500 specs. Sure, the Mustang can be had in GT and Super Snake clothes with a force-fed V-8 from Shelby American, but none of them are offered with a convertible options as of March 2016.

This makes the ZL1 Convertible unique in this niche and a damn cool muscle car. We already know what the new ZL1 Coupe is capable of, so it’s time to have a look at its drop-top sibling.

Updated 03/24/2016: Chevrolet unveiled the new 2017 ZL1 Convertible at the 2016 New York Auto Show next to its coupe brother.

2017 Chevrolet Sonic

Chevy’s subcompact puts on a new face for the New York Auto Show

Revealed at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, the current Chevrolet Sonic is a little long in the tooth compared to its main competitors, but that didn’t stop it from being a hot seller that brings new, younger customers to the brand in the U.S. But, while Chevrolet isn’t planning on ditching the already six-year-old Gamma II platform, the Sonic received a significant makeover ahead of the 2016 New York Auto Show.

Compared to last year’s model, which also gained a few nips and tucks, the 2017 Sonic is miles ahead in terms of exterior design. Solid improvements were operated inside as well, where a new infotainment system and the latest connectivity technologies are available. Chevy did ignore the drivetrain department, but the standard 1.8-liter and the optional 1.4-liter turbo provide just enough power for the small compact, along with excellent fuel economy. The hatch also comes with a couple of segment-first features, but we’ll talk about that in detail in the review below.

“The new styling and features of the 2017 Sonic reinforce its position as a fun, efficient small car with leading technology – all at an affordable price,” said Steve Majoros, director of marketing at Chevrolet. “This is an important segment for Chevrolet, as we really have an opportunity to introduce ourselves to new buyers and show them what we’re all about.”

The new Sonic goes on sale this fall with three trims to choose from for the sedan version. The hatch, on the other hand, will only be offered in RS guise.

2016 Chevrolet Malibu

2016 Chevrolet Malibu

GM’s decision to overhaul the Malibu just a little more than three years since the current model debuted is not at all surprising. With competitors like the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord or the Ford Fusion around, the eighth-gen Malibu has been struggling sales-wise ever since it arrived into dealerships in 2012. Chevy hopes that will come to an end with the larger and sportier 2016 Malibu that just made its public debut at the 2015 New York Auto Show.

The beginnings of the Malibu name are tied to that of the Chevrolet Chevelle. That’s because the Malibu was a range-topping trim level of the Chevelle from 1964 to 1977. Featuring added luxury and the same powerful V-8s as the Chevelle, the Malibu went on to become the best-selling badge in the lineup by 1978, when it received its own model line. Although dropped in 1983, the moniker returned in 1997 and soldiered on through 2012, when the eighth-generation model was launched on GM’s Epsilon II platform, shared with the Buick LaCrosse and Regal. The new Malibu became a global vehicle, receiving a range of four-cylinder and V-6 engines, as well as three transmissions choices.

With the 2016 model, Chevrolet aims to turn the Malibu into a more upscale model, as well as a more efficient alternative to segment leaders from Toyota and Honda. Keep reading to find out if GM’s new midsize sedan stands a chance against its main competitors in the U.S.

Updated 12/10/2015: Chevrolet announced that the 2016 Malibu Hybrid LT will arrive at U.S. dealers in the spring of 2016 with a starting price of $28,645. General Motors estimates that the car will deliver 48 mpg city, 45 mpg highway and 47 mpg combined making it the best in the midsize car segment.

2016 Chevrolet Spark

2016 Chevrolet Spark

In addition to the 2016 Malibu, Chevrolet also introduced a redesigned version of the Spark city car at the 2015 New York Auto Show. Updated to Chevy’s revised design language, the 2016 Spark is now more aerodynamic, more powerful and better equipped, thanks to a range of extensive updates inside and out. Production will commence in South Korea later this year, with U.S. sales to begin in the fourth quarter of 2015.

The Spark started life in 1998 as a Korean-designed city car powered by a 0.8-liter, three-pot and assembled in nine countries. Launched as the Daewoo Matiz, it was sold under different names globally, including as the Chevrolet Matiz, Chevrolet Spark or Pontiac G2. Revised in 2003, the subcompact retained most of its styling features and drivetrain components until 2007, when a brand-new model was developed on GM’s Gamma platform. The new Spark came to the U.S. for the 2010 model year, receiving an electric drivetrain later on.

The new Spark has pretty big shoes to fill, as its predecessor has been a massive success, with more than 1.1 million units sold globally since 2009. With the new model, Chevrolet hopes to draw young and first-time car buyers into its U.S. dealerships.

Updated 04/02/2015: The new generation Chevrolet Spark made its world debut at the 2015 New York Auto Show.

2016 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid

2016 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid

Chevrolet continues to expand its hybrid and electric-vehicle lineup in 2016 with the introduction of the next-generation Malibu Hybrid. This isn’t the first hybrid-electric outing for Chevy’s midsize family sedan, but this time around the Malibu Hybrid borrows some efficiency tricks from the range-extended electric Chevrolet Volt. Chevy says the all-new Malibu Hybrid will be good for over 45 combined mpg when it hits the streets in the spring of 2016. It provides a technological punch to the Malibu’s 2016 styling refresh, as Chevy works hard to elevate the Malibu’s profile against the high-tech Ford Fusion and Honda Accord.

The Malibu spent the 1990s becoming known as a forgettable rental car, but the refinement of the all-new 2013 model went a long way toward making it more respectable. Many of its competitors have undergone flashy updates in the meantime, though, so the conservative sheet metal wasn’t going to cut it. That’s been addressed with an inside-and-out upgrade for 2016.

2015 Chevrolet Trax

2015 Chevrolet Trax

The General looks like it’s back to badge engineering these days, as the Chevrolet Trax treks across the state at the 2014 New York Auto Show. Though it might only be a reworked Buick Encore, the Trax is aimed at a completely different audience — one that is noticeably younger.

The Trax may be a new vehicle for the U.S., but it’s been sold in Canada and other markets around the world since 2012. Thought it’s not new, the Trax gets some needed updates before entering the U.S. market. The interior receives the majority of the updating with an upright dashboard, optional center touch screen and infotainment system, a Chevy Sonic-like gauge cluster, and a steering wheel copped from the Cruze.

The Trax seems aimed at those shopping for Sonics or Cruzes, but want something more high-riding and SUVish. That combination of small dimensions, an upright posture, and a large cargo hold (with the seats down) has worked well for Buick so far.

Like the interior, the drivetrain is rather familiar. Power comes from the 1.4-liter, turbocharged, inline four-cylinder making 138 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque. While it’s a direct bolt-in from the Cruze, the Trax does offer an all-wheel-drive option. That combined with the higher ground clearance, and the Trax seems well suited for trudging through those pesky Polar Vortexes.

Chevy’s newest crossover offers plenty of standard features across its trim levels. Available in LS, LT, and LTZ, the Trax comes standard with a backup camera, StabiliTrak with ABS and electronic brake force distribution, and 10 airbags.

2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28

2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28

The launch of the revised 2014 Chevrolet Camaro also marked the return of the Z/28 nomenclature. The Z/28 name was initially used back in 1967 when a special Camaro was designed to compete in the Sports Car Club of America’s Trans-Am 2 class. Now, for the 2014 model year, the Z/28 nomenclature is applied to the most capable and fastest Camaro currently available on the market.

The new Camaro Z/28 was not built to compete in a specific race series, but it features track-focused capabilities. When compared to the ZL1, it is significantly lighter and, even though it is no more powerful, it is around three seconds faster around Chevy’s testing track than the Camaro ZL1. Also, as a tribute to the original Camaro Z/28, the new generation is only offered with a manual gearbox.

Updated 02/25/2014: Chevrolet unveiled a new video, explaining how the Performance Traction Management system helps the new Camaro Z/28 delivering faster laps on the race track.

2014 - 2015 Chevrolet Camaro SS

2014 - 2015 Chevrolet Camaro SS

After some subtle teasing, GM unveiled the 2014 Camaro SS on Live with Kelly & Michael instead of at the New York Auto Show. Granted, the SS did make its way to the NYIAS, but it was overshadowed by the unveiling of the all-new Z/28.

The updates to the Camaro SS are very limited, but nonetheless important. The main architecture of the new Camaro SS remain the same, but the changeable components, like the front fascia, hood, rear fascia and bumper cover are all completely different.

This mid-generation facelift is definitely a welcome sight, as the Camaro’s retro styling was starting to get a little long in the tooth and we need some sort of springboard to prepare us for the upcoming overhaul. We expect this revised look to only last for a few years – one to three years at the most – before Chevy unveils the all-new Camaro. So, enjoy this new look while you can.

Updated 05/23/2014: With just one more model year before a full redesign, Chevrolet announced today that the 2015 Camaro SS will continue to be offered with the same features offered for the 2014 model year, except a new Blue Velvet Metallic exterior hue.

2015 Chevrolet Cruze

2015 Chevrolet Cruze

The 2015 Chevrolet Cruze finally makes its debut at the New York International Auto Show and while we initially thought that Chevy was preparing a next-generation model, it’s now been confirmed that this model instead carries mild modifications that allows the Cruze to now be more in line with its big brothers, the Impala and the Malibu.

But there’s no reason to be dissappointed, at least if you were expecting an all-new Cruze with a whole lot of changes. The 2015 refresh still has some noticeable changes that only makes the sedan that much more appealing. A new front section is the biggest change from the 2014 model but it’s really all the new technological goodies that really separates the new model.

Needless to say, Chevrolet took that age old "if-it-ain’t-broke-don’t-fix-it" approach on the 2015 Cruze. Based from what we’ve seen so far, it looks like a smart decision.

2013 Chevrolet Camaro 1LE

2013 Chevrolet Camaro 1LE

Chevrolet Camaro is about to receive some major updates for the 2014 model year, but until then, the 2013 model will be getting a series of improvements to prep it for the following year. The major addition will be a new race-spec 1LE package, which will be joined by an updated interior with a new 7 inch color screen.

The new 1LE package was previewed last year at the 2011 SEMA Auto Show with the Camaro 1LE Concept. It will be distinguished by a new front splitter and rear spoiler painted in smoke gray combined with a unique matte-black hood. The car will sit on a new set of 20" wheels in a 10-spoke design featuring low-gloss black finish and red Brembo brake calipers.

The interior will add a ZL1 flat-bottom steering wheel, trimmed in suede-microfiber and designed for easier heel-and-toe driving on the racetrack. Chevrolet has also installed a quick-acting, short-throw shifter from the ZL1, also trimmed in suede-microfiber.

The new 1LE package will only be available for 1SS and 2SS coupe models and will be powered by a 6.2 liter LS3 V-8 engine that delivers a total of 426 HP and 420 lb-ft of torque. The 1LE is only available with a six-speed manual transmission featuring a standard air-to-liquid cooling system for track use.

The Chevrolet Camaro 1LE will go on sale in Fall 2012.

UPDATE 07/30/2012: The new Camaro 1LE has scored an impressive result by lapping famous Virginia International Raceway (VIR) “Grand Course” in 2:58.34 – a time previously accomplished only by the upper echelon of performance cars. Check out the video of the lap by clicking on the image above!

2014 - 2015 Chevrolet Impala

2014 - 2015 Chevrolet Impala

The Impala was once a feared muscle car that could also haul around the entire family, but things have changed since the 1960s and automakers are more focused on economy and emissions. This means that the once legendary Impala has become a family car, plain and simple. In 2014, Chevy is completely revamping the Impala in an attempt to keep it fresh and it is slated to be revealed at the 2012 New York Auto Show. Like many automakers this year, Chevy just can’t resist releasing information early.

Chevy has released all of the specifications and even some nice images of the anticipated production model. No more teasers guys, this is supposedly the real deal. From the looks of it, the best-selling full-size sedan in 2011 is looking to reclaim that crown with this redesign.

The redesign itself is rather drastic for Chevy’s standards, so prepare yourself. Then again, some of the standard features — engine, transmission and safety features — are pretty average and not surprising at all. The next gen Chevrolet Impala will be built on the LWB version of the Epsilon 2 chassis and will be offered with a new range of engines, including a 3.6 liter V6 engine and a new 2.0 liter turbo four-cylinder. An E-assist model may also follow after the launch.

With sedans like the Dodge Charger, Ford Taurus and Nissan Maxima sneaking up on it, can the Impala pull off the feat or repeating as a best seller?

Updated 05/22/2014: Chevrolet announced prices for the 2015 Impala which will go on sale this summer with a suggested starting price of $27,735. The biggest update for the 2015 model year includes the addition of the Stop/start technology - which will now be standard on the 2.5-liter ECOTEC® engine.

Check out the full review after the jump to see if the 2014 Chevrolet Impala has the goods to remain the best seller in America.

2013 - 2014 Chevrolet Traverse

2013 - 2014 Chevrolet Traverse

Earlier this month we teased you with some basic information on the 2013 Chevy Traverse and were awaiting its release at the New York Auto Show so we could provide more information. Fortunately, Chevy decided to not make us wait any longer and release a ton of information on the upcoming 2013 Chevrolet Traverse.

In the 2013 model year, the Traverse is entering its fifth model year, which is the typical timeframe for a refresh. Chevy is being careful not to shake up things too much by just adding slight touches to the exterior, keeping it from falling behind other models. The interior was another focal point of this redesign, as Chevy tries to make the Traverse a vehicle that the whole family can enjoy riding in.

With the Traverse coming into an extremely crowded SUV realm, which includes the newly redesigned 2013 Ford Explorer and the 2013 Honda Pilot, Chevy needs to come to the table with something that the others do not. To be perfectly honest, Chevy hasn’t done a great job at keeping its SUVs at the front of the class. Let’s see what kind of information GM is giving us before its New York Auto Show release.

Update 07/17/2013 GM has posted the press release for the 2014 Traverse. There are only three changes, one will make charging various devices easier and the others will make you feel a little safer when riding in the higher trim levels.

2012 Chevrolet Malibu ECO

2012 Chevrolet Malibu ECO

Next to the 2013 Malibu, Chevrolet also brought at the New York Auto Show the Eco version, a model that comes equipped with new fuel-saving eAssist technology. The new Eco version will be sold next to the Malibu LS, LT and LTZ version starting the summer of 2012.

"The Malibu ECO is a smart choice for customers who want excellent fuel economy without the price premium of popular hybrid sedans," said Rick Scheidt, vice president of Chevrolet marketing. "The Malibu ECO’s 38-mpg highway estimate is comparable with those hybrids. Malibu ECO exemplifies Chevrolet’s drive to use technology that delivers high-value, gas-friendly performance. In fact, the Malibu ECO delivers the fuel economy of a compact car in a midsize sedan."

The eAssist system uses a state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery and an electric motor-generator to enable regenerative braking electric assist and start-stop functionality. With this system the new Malibu Eco will deliver an impressive 26 mpg on city driving and 38 mpg on the highway.

2012 Chevrolet Sonic Z-Spec

2012 Chevrolet Sonic Z-Spec

After seeing the Sonic Z-Spec Concept at the Detroit Auto Show, we didn’t think it would take too long before Chevrolet revealed the first details on the production version of the car. Now we have them as the production Sonic Z-Spec will be revealed at the 2011 New York Auto Show next week.

The production version will include body-color ground effects (with a silver exhaust tip), contrasting mirror caps and roof spoiler, contrasting upper and lower grille surrounds, and a body graphics package. Additionally, the customer will get a more unique look for their special edition hatchback with a front fascia extension, rocker panel extensions, rear fascia extension, and silver exhaust tip. The interior is left widely untouched with only new aluminum sport pedals and sill plates. The vehicle will be completed with a new set of painted wheels offered in size 16" or 17".

Customers will have to choose from two different color accent packages - "Black Out" or "White Out" - that feature black accents on the Summit White Sonic exterior paint and Summit White accents on the Inferno Orange Sonic.

The 2012 Sonic will carry a 1.8L DOHC inline 4-cylinder unit delivering 135 HP and 125 lb-ft of torque, but customers can also upgrade to an optional 138 HP 1.4L turbocharged inline 4-cylinder. We imagine the Z-Spec package will come with these same engine options.

"The new Z-Spec accessories reinforce Sonic’s fun, youthful spirit," said Rick Scheidt, vice president, Chevrolet marketing. "Customization is particularly important with the customers we believe will gravitate toward the Sonic, and we want to help them make their vehicle look exactly the way they want as easily as possible."

The Sonic Z-Spec package will be available in parts form or as a full package. Prices will be revealed closer to the launch date, but don’t stress too much about the additional up front costs; GM is allowing customers to roll the parts prices into their monthly payment.
