Move along, folks. Nothing to see here.

It seemed too good to be true when we first heard about it. A Chrysler 300 packing Hellcat power? But Automotive News reported as much, saying that Fiat Chrysler Automobiles was working on launching a Chrysler 300 that will use a supercharged Hemi Hellcat V-8 engine under its hood. The mere thought of it was perplexing, but stranger things have happened within FCA, so the thought of a Hellcat-powered 300 sedan, as improbable as it was, didn’t seem too far-fetched for FCA. Well, consider the bubble burst because a spokesman from FCA has spoken, needle in hand. There won’t be a 707-horsepower Chrysler 300 Hellcat.

Word comes from Motor Authority, which learned that there no plans for a supercharged Hemi Hellcat-powered 300 sedan. All those who thought that it would be an ideal send-off for the aging 300 will have to settle for something else because it just isn’t happening. On the one hand, it is disappointing here because a 707-horsepower Chrysler 300 is the exactly the kind of variant that would give the current-generation 300 a newsworthy send-off. The appeal is definitely there and the 300 has, at least in the past, housed a V-8 rig under its hood. On the other hand, it’s also a sigh of relief that Chrysler isn’t going in this direction. It can’t just rely on the Hellcat engine as a lifeline of sorts to jolt interest back in a model that’s clearly on its way out. FCA is better than that and to its credit, the automaker seems to understand that rationale too.

Australia Could Get Its Very Own Hellcat Version Of The Chrysler 300

Hellcat all the things? Makes more sense to do it on a 300 instead of a Jeep…

As you could probably guess, we’re rather fond of FCA’s monstrously powerful 6.2-liter Hemi V-8. You know, the supercharged badass in the Challenger Hellcat that lays down over 700 horses? If we had our way, that engine would be an option on every model FCA produces (and yes, we still think the Pacifica Hellcat should be a thing.) Luckily, it looks like we’re getting a little closer to that ideal with a possible Hellcatted version of the Chrysler 300 sedan.

The rumor comes from our friends over at Autoblog, who recently posted a series of spy shots depicting what appears to be some kind of 300 test mule. While the bodywork is more or less the same as any other 300 SRT model, the wheels are sporting incredibly wide 315-mm tires – the same rubber equipped on the recently released Challenger SRT Demon. In front, the 300 mule is also rocking SRT four-pot Brembo brakes, while the photographer reports that it’s got a burly blown V-8 soundtrack to accompany it. FCA Boss Hints At Front-Wheel-Drive System For The Next-Gen Chrysler 300

Sergio Marchionne says it’s possible, refused to make a commitment

Intentional or not, FCA chief executive Sergio Marchionne has hinted on a significant change for the next-generation Chrysler 300, one that involves a shift to front-wheel drive for the traditionally rear-wheel drive full-sized luxury sedan. Marchionne made the comments during the Chrysler Pacifica’s launch in Chrysler’s Windsor, Ontario production facility.

The FCA boss stopped short of confirming his comments when asked to clarify on them. He likely realized that his words could be taken out of context so instead, he clarified that the Windsor facility is “capable” of making a production run since it’s possible to use the underpinnings of the Pacifica for the next-generation 300. The facility in Ontario will be the production base of the new minivan and while it would be interesting to see a front-wheel drive 300, Chrysler signing off on such a proposal could entail moving the production of the 300 from its current facility in Brampton, Ontario. The proximity between the two facilities – around 217 miles – could make for an easy transition and would see the 300 leave behind the Dodge Charger and Dodge Challenger in the Brampton facility.

That said, Marchionne’s comments should be taken with a grain of salt considering that he set the record straight, saying his comments shouldn’t be treated as a commitment to a dramatic shift in production strategy. But it does open the possibility of seeing the next-generation 300 come with a front-wheel-drive configuration. Having that should equate to a more refined driving experience, improved fuel economy, and a bigger and more efficient use of interior space, three characteristics that are likely to be high on the checklist of prospective customers for the next-generation 300.

Chrysler shows off two new appearance packages for the 300S at the New York Auto Show

Chrysler takes a lot of pride in its flagship 300 sedan. When it comes to the 300S, the S really tricks you into thinking it’s a more powerful version of the 300, but in reality, it’s just a darker take on the 300 Sedan. When it was first introduced, the 300S featured a blacked out grille, tinted headlights, black window moldings, and some black trim inside. In 2014, the 300S was upgraded to include a new Ambassador Blue interior and Beats by Dr. Dre audio system.

Now that the New York Auto Show has kicked off, Chrysler has dropped a new variant of the 300S that incorporates an Interior Sport Appearance Package and an Exterior Sport Appearance Package. The 300S V-8 model comes standard with the packages, and they are available as options on the boring V-6 variant. Tim Kuniskis, the Head of Passenger Car Brands for Dodge, SRT, and FCA of North America, said, “The new 2017 Chrysler 300S re-excites the passion of what owning an American flagship sedan is about." He continued, “And now for our Chrysler enthusiasts, two all-new sport appearance packages that take the 300S model’s athletic styling and appointments to the next level.”

In all honesty, these packages are nothing more than an extension of the 300S’ dark ambiance, but it’s worth a quick look to go over the details.

FCA Looking For Partner To Build Dart And 200 Sedan

Fresh hope for FCA’s sedans

In January 2016, FCA’s Sergio Marchionne announced that both the Dodge Dart and Chrysler 200 will be axed, as the company is looking to focus its resources to building more trucks and SUVs. You know, the kind of vehicles that bring bigger profits. The decision was far from surprising in the case of the Dart, a slow-selling car that has lost its appeal years ago, but unexpected for the 200. Sure, sales have declined shortly after the sedan went into production, but unlike the Dart, the 200 has received an extensive makeover for the 2015 model year. One that Chrysler was very proud of, being described as the car that "lays the groundwork for the future of the brand" and a model to become the "new benchmark for midsize sedans."

Two months have passed and it appears that Marchionne changed his mind about both vehicles and the brand is looking for a partner "who is better at it than we are and who has got capacity available" to continue building the Dart and 200. In other words, FCA wants to have the sedans built in another company’s facility, just like Mercedes-Benz has the G-Class manufactured by Magna Steyr in Austria and Toyota has the Scion iA made by Mazda in Mexico.

"There are discussions going on now," Marchionne said at the Geneva Motor Show. "I think we will find a solution. We continue to talk. It’s both a technical solution and an economic one. We need to find a solution that works economically."

If this happens, the Dart and 200 won’t be the first FCA vehicles to be built by partners. The Miata-based Fiat 124 Spider is assembled by Mazda, while the ProMaster City van is manufactured in a join-venture plant in Turkey shared with its Fiat-badged Doblo twin.

2016 Chrysler 300S Alloy Edition

The Chrysler 300S just got more sophisticated thanks to its new Alloy Edition package.

Launched in 2011, the second-generation Chrysler 300 received a facelift for the 2015 model year. The update brought a much larger grille, revised LED headlamps, a sportier rear end,and higher-quality materials on the inside. However, the facelifted second-gen 300 also came with a bit of bad news, as Chrysler decided to discontinue the Hemi-powered SRT model. Although the beefed-up sedan did get a similar refresh, Pentastar decided to sell it only in markets such as Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, and the Middle East.

With a third-generation model set to arrive sometime in 2017, you’d be tempted to think that the current 300 will be left to go out of production without much hubbub. Fortunately, Chrysler won’t let that happen just yet and the 300S Alloy Edition that’s scheduled to break cover at the 2016 Chicago Auto Show is proof that the full-size four-door is alive and kicking.

Available on the 300S trim with all-wheel drive and a choice of two drivetrains, the 300S Alloy Edition will be launched alongside a similar version of the smaller 200S.

2016 Chrysler 200S Alloy Edition

Chrysler is offering a special edition 200S that will be available this spring.

Just a week after the world found out that Chrysler was dropping the Dodge Dart and Chrysler 200, Chrysler announced the “Alloy Edition” of the soon-to-be-discontinued 200 sedan. It’s slated to debut next to the 300S Alloy Edition at the Chicago Auto Show this month, showcasing some unique accenting that includes a dark bronze and titanium finish inside and out.

In the press release announcing the 200S Allow Edition, Tim Kuniskis – the Head of Passenger Car Brands for FCA – said, “Chrysler brand embodies Detroit style, and our new 200S and 300S Alloy Editions are a perfect meld of our engineering innovation and craftsmanship, forged with cutting-edge colors and materials inspired by the Motor City’s ingenuity and creativity.”

Of course, one has to remember that the death warrant for the 200S has already been written, so even though Chrysler feels the 200S is an “athletically striking sedan with coupe-like proportions and a timeless look,” it’s not going to be around for long. So, will this new Special Edition be enough to increase sales and save the model from going down as a total flop? Well, probably not, but let’s take a look at what makes it special.

FCA Prepares To Kill Dodge Dart and Chrysler 200

Decline in sales and shifting consumer demand triggered FCA’s decision to cut ties with both models

Fiat-Chrysler is embarking on a new adventure as part of an updated five-year business plan that CEO Sergio Marchionne outlined in a recent presentation with investors. As with most updates of this type, changes have been made in the direction of the company and two models, the Dodge Dart and the Chrysler 200, have become unwitting casualties.

According to Marchionne, FCA will begin focusing its energy and resources into building more trucks and utility vehicles in response to what he describes as a “permanent shift in demand” in the market. Unfortunately for both the Dart and the 200, the pedestrian sales numbers of both cars made them expendable and with no signs in the horizon of both models improving their appeal to the public. FCA is now preparing its shovels for the two vehicles arguably untimely deaths.

With the Dart and the 200 out of the picture, FCA can realign its facilities to accommodate the production of more Jeep and Ram models. The company’s plants in Illinois where the Dart and the 200 were being built will now be used to increase the production of the Jeep Cherokee and Ram 1500.

It’s an ignominious exit for both models, especially for the Dart, which only returned to the automotive scene in 2012 after not being around since 1976. Dodge even had huge plans for the model at the time of its supposed comeback, even going so far as building numerous race and concept variants. But with the model turning out to be a sales dud, parent company FCA has deemed it – and the 200 – as baggage that it doesn’t want to carry moving forward.

Since Mopar offers performance accessories, it also puts together concept vehicles from time to time, and today at SEMA, Mopar has shown us that it’s at it again – this time with a Chrysler 200 S.

The 200 S by Mopar isn’t outrageous by any means, but it does showcase a number of accessories – some of which are currently available from Mopar. Unlike some of the concepts we’ve seen this year from other manufacturers, the 200 S Mopar actually has an equal balance between exterior modifications, interior modifications, and engine modifications.

Even if you’re not a fan of Chrysler’s products, you’ll still be able to find something to like about this modified, midsize sedan from Mopar. Let’s take a look.

2015 Chrysler 300 Super S

The SEMA Auto Show is the one event in the calendar that attracts its share of concept vehicles that aren’t really concepts but are instead reinterpretations of regular vehicles. Take Chrysler for example. The American automaker has never missed a chance to peddle its wares at SEMA, often bringing as many as 20 modified vehicles to the annual aftermarket show in Las Vegas. This year, the Chrysler 300 is part of Chrysler’s roster of attendees at SEMA and it’s taking the name “300 Super S Concept.”

To be fair, the 300 Super S Concept isn’t the most radical of Chrysler’s SEMA bunch. That distinction falls somewhere between the Ram ProMaster DragMaster and the Dodge Challenger GT AWD Concept. By contrast, the 300 Super S Concept sits right in the sweet spot where concept and functionality meet. It’s a concept because it has unique modifications, but these modifications are useful enough to be applied in a standard 300.

You might even say that it’s the most appealing of all of Chrysler’s SEMA offerings. That’s a good thing for the 300 since its stately persona could use an injection of exuberance and personality.

Its Official: North America Won’t Get The Refreshed Chrysler 300 SRT

If you were hoping to plant your rear end in a refreshed version of the 2013 Chrysler 300 SRT, you might as well settle for the current model. The updated version of the 300 SRT isn’t going to be released in the United States. Between declining popularity here, and Fiat Chrysler’s intentions to make SRT a Dodge-only performance brand, it doesn’t make sense to release it here. It will, however, be released in Japan, Indonesia, South Korea and New Zealand, among other markets throughout the world.

For those of you who haven’t paid attention for the past couple years, SRT is all about performance. When you compare the 300 SRT to vehicles like the 2015 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat and the 2015 Dodge Challenger Hellcat, the 300 SRT just doesn’t appear to stack up to where Chrysler wants to go with the SRT brand name. Naturally the inability to have it will naturally make you want it more, so I might as well tell you what you are missing out on. In other markets, the 300 SRT will come with an eight-speed automatic transmission, a 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 that puts out 470 horsepower, and updated styling all the way around. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Delayed The Redesign Of A Dozen Vehicles

Over the course of the last year, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has purportedly delayed the redesign or release of at least 12 current or new vehicles in North America.

Citing suppliers familiar with the company’s plans, Reuters is reporting that the large number of delays could possibly stem from the automaker’s desire to defer billions of dollars in investments while it searches for a new partner. FCA chief exec Sergio Marchionne has said in the past that he favors consolidation, which would save on capital put toward the creation of overlapping engines and vehicles. Last-minute design and engineering changes are also among suspected explanations for the delays.

The list of program postponements mentioned by the sources is long. It includes the redesigned Ram 1500 delayed from mid-2017 to November 2017, the redesigned Jeep Wrangler delayed from early 2017 to July 2017, the redesigned Jeep Grand Cherokee delayed from 2017 to 2018, the Jeep Patriot/Compass replacement delayed six months from an original launch date in the spring of 2016, the redesigned Dodge Dart delayed from mid-2016 to 2019/20, the redesigned Charger delayed from mid/late 2018 to 2019, the redesigned Challenger delayed from mid/late 2018 to 2019, and the redesigned Chrysler 300 delayed from mid/late 2018 to 2019. 

The supposed delays contradict a five-year, $50 billion plan outlined in May of last year, which also included boosting annual global sales to 7 million by 2018, up from 4.75 million sold last year. 

FCA declined to comment on specific model delays, instead telling Reuters that the 2014 plan was “a five-year snapshot” of the company’s strategy going forward. 

“Those plans need to be flexible and fluid, with the potential to add some vehicles, pull some forward and extend the life cycle of others. We look at these programs on a vehicle-by-vehicle basis,” the company said.

Chrysler Pentastar V-6 Family Surpasses 5 Million Units Produced

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has just surpassed making its five millionth Pentastar V-6 engine. That’s easy to believe considering its wide spread use and availability in nearly every FCA product. In fact, 47 percent of all FCA’s U.S.-spec vehicles have come equipped with the V-6 since the start of 2015.

Introduced in 2010 with the then-new Jeep Grand Cherokee, the Pentastar V-6 began life displacing 3.6 liters. Now the engine design has grown to include a 3.2-liter version for the Jeep Cherokee and a 3.0-liter version for the Chinese-spec Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, and Chrysler 300.

It’s thanks to the engine’s compact design that allows so many vehicles to utilize it. A 60-degree V keeps its width to a minimum while its exhaust manifolds are integrated into the cylinder heads, eliminating the jumble of individual exhaust tubing. This allows the Pentastar to be easily fitted into either a transverse or longitudinal powertrain orientation with almost no modifications between applications. What’s more, its A/C compressor and alternator are mounted directly to the block, eliminating the need for numerous accessory drive variations.

In the truck world, the Pentastar makes headlines in both the Ram and Jeep brand. The 3.6-liter V-6 comes standard in the Ram 1500 and offers 305 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque, giving the truck a respectable V-6 max tow rating of 7,600. As for the Jeep brand, the 3.6-liter is still going strong in the Grand Cherokee. The Wrangler also uses the 3.6-liter, except in China, where FCA powers the Jeep with the 230-horse, 210-pound-feet 3.0-liter version.

The Pentastar might not be as iconic as say, the GM small-block V-8, but with FCA’s widespread and continued use of the engine, that could chance over time. Just don’t count on hot-rodders swapping Pentastars in their weekend toys.

Chrysler Plans To Bring The 300 SRT Back

When the Chrysler 300 received a facelift for 2015, the SRT trim level was dropped for the U.S. market. But plans are afoot to bring the trim level back, and this raises a few questions. For starters, the SRT trim level for the 300 was originally the result of SRT being made into its own division, a bit like AMG is to Mercedes-Benz. But it has now been rejoined with Dodge, and so an SRT product from a division other than Dodge is seemingly something that shouldn’t happen. Not to say that it’s impossible to wrap your mind around, but still an unexpected move.

Chrysler replaced the SRT with the 300S, a 363-horsepower version of the car, with a 5.7-liter V8. It falls well short of the 470 horsepower produced by the 2014 Charger SRT8, Dodge’s performance version of the platform, but it’s currently the only performance option for the car. Of course, Chrysler could simply swap the 5.7-liter engine in the 300S out for the 6.4-liter unit from SRT8 products without changing the badging. But whatever the approach, we’re happy so long as there’s a faster 300, and the whole thing is likely to get shaken up again with the new generation in 2018, anyway.

2015 Chrysler 200 Recalled For Transmission Replacement

2015 Chrysler 200 Recalled For Transmission Replacement

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) is recalling about 25,000 of the 2015 Chrysler 200 for a potential transmission replacement. The recall affects V6-powered models equipped with the brand’s new nine-speed automatic transmission. In the affected models, the park rod may become dislodged or broken, preventing the gearbox from shifting into Park. If the park lock does not engage, the vehicle may roll away.

"Inconsistent assembly procedures at a supplier’s plant have been linked to five reports involving customers who could not shift their vehicles into park," FCA said in a statement, adding that it is unaware of any related injuries or accidents.

FCA estimates that 25,734 sedans could be affected by this issue, 22,107 of which were sold in the U.S., 3,600 in Canada and 213 in Mexico. The recalled vehicles were manufactured between March 9th, 2014 and December 15th, 2014.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the recall is expected to begin on April 10th, 2015. Chrysler will notify owners and dealers will inspect and, if necessary, change the transmission free of charge. Until then, owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403 for additional information.

Chrysler 200 Could Get 2.2-liter Turbodiesel Engine

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles may soon expand its North American diesel lineup to include the Chrysler 200 compact sedan. Currently motivated by 2.4-liter, four-cylinder or 3.6-liter V-6 mills, the 200 is set to receive a 2.2-liter oil burner, if we are to believe a report coming from Automotive News. The unit in question is reportedly being developed by Alfa Romeo for one of its upcoming sedans. As with most Fiat engines, the 2.2-liter four-pot is expected to come in many flavors, ranging from 135 to over 200 horsepower. However, only one version is likely to make it stateside to join the Tigershark and Pentastar gasoline engines already available for the 200.

If this rumor proves to be true, Alfa Romeo’s 2.2-liter would become the fourth diesel engine to power FCA cars in the U.S. Chrysler already offers a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 in the Ram 1500 pickup truck and the Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV, as well as a 3.0-liter inline-four in the Ram ProMaster van. Ram also gets a 6.7-liter, straight-six from Cummins, its long-time diesel engine supplier. There’s no word on whether the new 2.2-liter diesel will make it into other FCA vehicles here in the U.S., but keep it locked here for more details on the matter.

The Chrysler 200 has a long and muddled history dragging behind it. Born from the ashes of the tarnished and dented Sebring nameplate, new parent Fiat wanted the 200 to stand tall with a collection of new engines, features and a new interior design. With its debut in 2010, it was obvious that Chrysler had the ability to recover from its past mistakes. For 2015 we have the new second-generation 200. It looks better, has a new transmission and the interior has been loaded with the best luxury and technology available.

I was impressed with the last 200 for its sudden refinement and quality over the car that birthed it, but I wasn’t sure if it was the best choice in such a competitive segment. With the 2015 car Chrysler is promising a lot has been improved in ride, comfort, luxury, and technology. As the swoopy four-door pulled into my driveway for my weeklong test, I was intrigued. I had more than 500 miles of hectic holiday driving ahead of me. I was ready to see if the 200 would be a willing companion.

2018 Chrysler 300

The modern-day Chrysler 300 was introduced in 2004, nearly four decades after the initial 300 "letter series" was discontinued. Bolted on the company’s rear-wheel-drive LX platform with components from the W211-generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class, the 300 debuted with a host of V-6 and V-8 gasoline powerplants, plus a diesel unit for European markets. The full-size sedan was redesigned for the 2011 model year, receiving many drivetrain and technology upgrades. The second-gen car received a facelift for 2015, which included a significantly modified front fascia among other features. As the refreshed sedan is being readied for U.S. dealerships, the first details of the third-generation model surfaced the Interwebz.

Set to arrive for the 2018 model year, the next Chrysler 300 will be conceived as a global vehicle, with the same bold exterior design that made it stand out in the full-size segment back in 2004, Chrysler head of design Ralph Gilles told Car Advice at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show.
