Citroën->ke22 has teamed up with the popular French pop group Hyphen Hyphen to create a go-anywhere version of its SpaceTourer van. Looking like a modern version of a 1970s American conversion van,->ke1149 the vehicle, known as the SpaceTourer Hyphen Concept, sports a high-energy vibe inside and out, matching the high-energy electronica music from Hyphen Hyphen.

“Citroën has always known how to innovate, to be a pioneer and to spot talent,” says Arnaud Belloni, Director of Marketing and Communication. “After meeting Hyphen Hyphen, the idea for a partnership came about naturally. This vibrant, offbeat group has a real graphic and musical signature. This may be a communication campaign, but one that comes straight from the heart! It’s also a way for us to pool our values of optimism, sharing and creativity.”

The SpaceTourer Hyphen Concept->ke169 is based on the production version of the van, with three main differences. Citroën says they are a “supercharged design, an invigorating interior, and enhanced mobility.” Those three things, or rather themes, make this SpaceTourer something completely unique.

Citroën will officially unveil the SpaceTourer Hyphen Concept at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show->ke228 on Tuesday, March 1, 2016. Until then, keep reading for the preliminary details.

Pros

Exterior

Citroën started with its standard SpaceTourer van, an totally transformed its appearance with black body cladding with anodized aluminum orange accents, 19-inch black wheels with aluminum faces, and a taller ride height. The body color fades from a solid color up front to a solid orange in back. Off-road lights reside on the top of the van, helping the driver see during nighttime adventures.

Citroën designers did a great job of blending the body cladding to the SpaceTourer’s body lines, making it appear the cladding was a part of the van’s original design. The orange accents give the van a tough look, with a touch of utilitarianism. The utility look carries onto the all-terrain tires with traction belts giving a helping hand in snowy conditions.

Interior

The interior looks as if a 1990s Nickelodeon commercial exploded onto the seats. Even the dashboard and headliner are coated in bright colors. The dash itself features the same design as the standard SpaceTourer, but faced from blue to orange, while also featuring straps over the passenger airbag compartment. The strap accents continue onto the seat bottoms and seatbelts, as well.

Each seat in the passenger compartment features a different design, again fading from blue to orange. The carpet is customized, too, with deep wool floor mats that undoubtedly feel amazing on bare feet. Looking up, the headliner is covered in blue and orange fabric, a large moonroof over the second row floods the cabin with light.

Drivetrain

Providing power to this psychedelic van is a BlueHDi 150 S&S diesel four-cylinder with a six-speed manual transmission. The engine sends 148 horsepower to a custom-built 4WD system with on-demand engagement. This gives the van unmatched abilities in the dirt that no other SpaceTourer can compete with.

The SpaceTourer Hyphen Concept also features a higher ground clearance to minimize damage from off-road debris or obstacles. The taller ride also allows for bigger wheels and tires, furthering the van’s go-anywhere attitude.

Conclusion

Citroën is still quiet on many of the details with the SpaceTourer Hyphen Concept, but we expect to hear more info once the van breaks cover at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show. Aside from the missing details, the van – or at least its renderings – show a fun and spunky vehicle with attitude not normally found in MPV-style vans. It’s doubtful Citroën would ever put this concept into production, but it may just spark consumer interest in AWD or 4WD vans.

Whatever the case, the SpaceTourer Hyphen Concept is an interesting vehicle that we can’t wait to see in person. Be sure to check TopSpeed for more details come March.
