Citroën's DS 4 Crossback is a curious car in its own right. It’s technically a Citroën but the added DS name means that it also has some fashionable features attached to it. It’s also billed as a crossover, although it does look more like an oversized car. Be that as it may, the French automaker has tried really hard to separate its core line with the more premium DS sub-brand and no more is that evident than in the DS 4 Crossback Terre Rouge Limited Edition, a 17-unit limited edition model that doesn’t really offer too much in the way of exclusivity, only Citroën wants to make you believe that it does.

The good news is that the DS 4 Crossback Terre Rouge comes with a laundry list of features that have been made standard on all 17 units. The bad news is that in addition to these options, the special edition crossover’s only other claim to fame is the color that it comes in. Seems appropriate then that Citroën is only offering 17 units of the model since it might have trouble selling more than that number.

The vehicle isn’t actually all that bad; it’s just an awkward example of a model that’s being touted far more heavily than it should be. There’s a certain level of expectation that comes with models being branded as a limited edition and the DS 4 Crossback Terre Rouge, as unique as Citroën makes it out to be, really isn’t that unique once you peel through all of its layers.

But hey, it’s not like the model’s headed here to the U.S. to begin with. All 17 models are earmarked for the U.K. market at a price of £30,045, or about $36,600 based on current exchange rates.

What makes the DS 4 Crossback Terre Rouge Limited Edition special

I suppose the exclusive matte Tourmaline Orange body finish counts as something special. It is, after all, described as being “inspired by the latest Parisian fashion trends,” whatever that means. I might even be persuaded to include the model’s 10-inch gloss black alloy wheels as another special edition nod. But other than those two items, there’s not a lot going on with the DS 4 Crossback Terre Rouge that makes me think that I’m getting something really unique out of it.

To be fair, the model does get a few more unique features, including Mirror Screen and DS LED Vision, the latter of which help increase light beam intensity by 51 percent. It also has a reversing camera, keyless entry, and a lane departure warning system that could prove to be useful to those who do end up buying one of the 17 units that Citroën will be rolling out for public consumption.

But I expected more from Citroën and the way this model looks, I don’t think it has enough uniqueness about it that really makes it stand out from its peers. The orange body paint is nice, but it shouldn’t be the centerpiece of any special edition model, let alone one that’s already lacking in exclusivity. Even the crossover’s BlueHDI 180 diesel engine, doesn’t inspire. It’s only good enough to produce around 180 horsepower, and there’s that voice inside our heads that still expects a little more.
