Citroen is a manufacturer that many still associate with clever technical innovations wrapped in a unique styling package and, by that definition, the new Ami Concept fits right into the brand’s historic mold. It’s also not the first Citroen to be called Ami, so maybe the automaker is timidly trying to play the history card with this petit concept.

What Makes the Citroen Ami Concept Special?

The new Ami Concept is a two-seater city car that’s fully electric and about the same size as a Smart ForTwo - it measures 2.5 meters in length and 1.5 meters tall, and it rides on (massive for its size) 18-inch wheels. On the styling front, this concept is quite out there and radical - it looks dramatic from pretty much any angle, and once you swing open the large suicide (rear-hinged) doors, the choice of colors, materials, and textures is carried over inside.

Maximum range on a single charge is 100 km or 62 miles, but given that the most a vehicle like this will travel is from downtown into the suburbs, it is adequate for its size and purpose.

However, while it may look quite radical and futuristic, there is nothing especially innovative about it. It is just a small all-electric city runabout whose main purpose is to be integrated into ride sharing schemes, although having one for private use could make sense for many whose daily commute is not very long and who live in cities that demand a congestion charge.

The automaker says the study is “a disruptive all-electric ‘object’ that places digital technology at the heart of a new urban mobility experience, offering more freedom and peace of mind.” But what we really want to know is if there’s any chance it could reach production - it would certainly be a refreshing sight on the tight, crowded streets that make up makeup Europe’s urban center downtown areas.
