Citroen C5 started its life as a station wagon and a notchback back in 2001 when the first generation was launched. A sedan was added to the lineup when the second generation was launched in 2007. Now, the third generation comes with a few interesting changes.

With a design inspired by the third generation C4 and the CXperience concept, the new C5 "combines the modernity and appeal of an SUV, the elegance and status of a saloon, and the versatility and practicality of a station wagon." In another words, the new C5 X is now a "liftback." Confusing, no?

Exterior

As we already mentioned, the new C5 X has a design inspired by the CXperience Concept we've seen at the 2016 Paris Auto Show. And in here we are mostly referring to the LED V-shaped lighting - which of course became Citroën’s new identity in the past few years, and that cool-looking sloping roofline that gives the car a very aerodynamic look.

The V-shaped headlights feature small light veins - a detail that creates a graphic chevron design and offers the C5 X an even more muscular look.

When looked from the side, you will notice the elongated coupé inspired sloping roofline, the raised ride height and the large, 19-inch ‘Aero X’ bi-tone alloy wheels with gloss black aerodynamic inserts.

In the rear the taillights have the same V-shaped design and a bi-tone Perla Nera Black roof further accentuates the stylish appearance of the C5 X.

The new C5 X measures 4,850 mm (190.9 inches) in length, 1,865 mm (73,42 inches) in width and 1,485 mm (58.46 inches) in height. It was built on a 2,785 mm (109.6 inches) wheelbase.

Interior

As a standard feature, the C5 X offers Advanced Comfort seats - they feature a high-density layer and thickened structured foam for the most relaxing driving experience, even on long journeys.

The dashboard is clean and uncluttered, and all models will be offered with a 12" high-definition touch screen, four USB sockets, and wireless smartphone charging.

With the seats upright, the C5 X offers a load volume of 545 liters (19.24 cu. ft.), but it can be extended to 1,640 liters (57.91 cu. ft.) just by folding the rear seats.

Powertrain

Citroen will offer a wide range of gasoline engines for the C5 X, but we have no specs numbers available just yet.

We do now, however, that a plug-in hybrid version will also be offered.

For extra comfort, the C5 X plug-in hybrid will also be offered with Citroen's Advanced Comfort Active suspension. It has three modes, and under certain conditions it "softens" the suspension and offers greater control and precision when cornering.

Conclusion

While we can't exactly say for sure in what specific category you should place the C5 X, we have to admit it is a nice evolution over the previous generations. It offers a fresh, clean design, a roomy interior, and lots of technologies, but most importantly it keeps up with the times in offering the right type of powertrain.
