2018 Ferrari SP38
Introduced in 2015 as a replacement for the 458 Italia, the Ferrari 488 GTB is already an iconic supercar. It already spawned a topless, Spider version, as well as a replacement for the 458 Speciale, called the 488 Pista. Racing duties go to the 488 GTE and 488 GT3 for the most coveted classes in the FIA-governed championships. Much like its predecessor, it was also used for a custom limited-edition model, called the J50 and built in just ten units to celebrate 50 years since the Italian brand arrived in Japan. Come 2018 and Ferrari rolled off yet another bespoke model. It’s called the SP38, and only one will ever see the light of day.
Developed by company’s One-Off program, the SP38 was designed by the Ferrari Design Center on the chassis and running gear of the 488 GTB. It was unveiled at Ferrari’s Fiorano test track, where it was handed over to one of the company’s most dedicated customers. The new supercar will be on public display for the first time at the 2018 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este before it will find its way in a heated garage. Needless to say, the SP38 is the most intriguing version of the 488 GTB yet, and it will probably become a highly sought-after collectible in a few years.

2016 BMW 2002 Hommage
If you look back on this history of the Villa d’Este Concours event, you will find a lot of hype about models like the BMW CSL Hommage from last year and the 328 Hommage from before that. Needless to say, BMW likes to bring the past to present with some interesting concepts that pay tribute to older models from years past. This year, BMW is bringing another “very special model,” called the BMW 2002 Hommage, a model that is based on the BMW 2002 Turbo.
Underneath all the fancy body lines and the little pieces that trigger memories from way back when, the BMW 2002 Hommage is probably just an M2. Be that as it may, it’s still a pretty nice place to start. Adrian van Hooydonk, the Senior Vice President of BMW Group Design, said, “Exactly 50 years ago, the 02 range kick-started an era of success for BMW. This compact coupe is one of the vehicles which made the brand what it is today. The 2002 sat at the top of the range and was the first series-produced car anywhere in Europe to come with turbo technology. That set the seal on the coupe as a genuine sports car. At the same time, the 2002 turbo was at the technological vanguard of engine development at BMW. The BMW 2002 Hommage is our way of raising a glass to all these achievements.”
Karim Habib, the Head of Design for BMW Automobiles, believes that the BMW 2002 Hommage “encapsulates BMW’s major motorsport triumphs” and is a “confident statement of unadulterated driving joy.” So, with that said, let’s take a closer look at BMW’s latest concept for the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este and what it’s all about.

2016 Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato Concept
Introduced in 2001 as a successor to the aging Virage, the V12 Vanquish received an extensive redesign in 2012. Previewed by the Project AM310 Concept, the second-gen Vanquish’s exterior design is an evolution of the DBS with many styling cues inspired by the limited-edition One-77. The grand tourer also gained a new interior based on the one found in the supercar with hand-stitched leather and an updated infotainment system as standard equipment. Under the hood, the 5.9-liter V-12 was uprated from the first-generation’s 520 to 565 horsepower and later to 568 horses. In 2016, the second-gen Vanquish is celebrating four years on the market and Aston Martin is introducing the Vanquish Zagato Concept at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este.
The fifth car to emerge from a collaboration that goes back to the early 1960s, the Vanquish Zagato Concept brings together classic Aston Martin styling cues and design features seen on previous limited-edition and concept models such as the One-77 and CC100 Speedster. The grand tourer also borrows some elements from the brand-new DB11, which suggests that it might preview the third-generation Vanquish that’s set to arrive by the end of the decade.
"Over the years, we have developed and refined our own design language and we have always gone that little bit further with our special series cars like CC100, One-77 and Aston Martin Vulcan. The Vanquish Zagato Concept shows how our two companies can come together and push the definition of Aston Martin design," said Marek Reichman, executive vice president and chief creative officer of the British brand.
"We pride ourselves on our strong partnership and the creation of the Vanquish Zagato Concept was a true shared experience," added Zagato CEO Andrea Zagato, "it represents the essence of an important design relationship that dates back over fifty years."
Set to break cover at Lake Como in Italy, the Vanquish Zagato Concept joins iconic Zagato-designed Aston Martins such as the DB4 GT Zagato of 1960 and the V12 Vantage Zagato of 2011.

Italian coachbuilder Zagato may design fewer automobiles than it used to back in the day, but that’s not to say its creations are less impressive. And we have the Maserati Monstro as proof, which the Italians are planning to reveal at the 2015 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este this summer.
The coachbuilt custom, which will hit the stage as part of Maserati’s 100th anniversary year, pays tribute to a unique race car Zagato crafted for Maserati in the 1950s. Using a 450S, one of Maserati’s most successful racers, Zagato constructed a special aerodynamic coupe drawn by Frank Costin. The car was commissioned and raced by Stirling Moss at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Although it failed to finish, the Maserati 450S Coupe Zagato became known as "il Mostro" (which translates into "the Monster") for its incredible power output. According to Maserati, it remained the most powerful front-engined race car in the world into the 1990s.
Nearly six decades later, the Mostro returns as a modern-day interpretation from the same coachbuilder that gave us the original Alfa Romeo 8C, Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato, and the Alfa Romeo TZ.

Seven years since it unveiled the M1 Hommage, a concept car paying tribute to the iconic M1, or BMW’s only true-blue sports car as of 2015, the Bavarian automaker introduced the 3.0 CSL Hommage at the 2015 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. As the name suggests, this new concept celebrates the 3.0 CSL, an homologation special launched in 1972 and the brand’s most successful race car. Nicknamed the "Batmobile" due to its extreme aerodynamic package, the 3.0 CSL scored resounding wins at Sebring, Daytona and Talladega, where it defeated the Porsche 935, among other famous race cars. With more than 100 wins under its belt, the 3.0 CSL definitely deserves a modern homage.
“Our Hommage cars not only demonstrate how proud we are of our heritage, but also how important the past can be in determining our future,” said Adrian van Hooydonk, vice president of BMW Design. Although this may sound like a hint of things to come, it’s very unlikely Munich will revive the 3.0 CSL in the 21st century. It remains to be seen whether some of these styling features or parts of the futuristic interior will find their way into a production, but in the meantime the Hommage remains a tribute to the company’s glorious past.

The 1950s and 1960s gave us the most exquisite sports cars and race vehicles ever built. The Italians had Ferrari and Alfa Romeo, the British had Aston Martin and Jaguar, while the French had Gordini and Alpine. Be it grand tourers, lightweight coupes and lightning-fast barchettas, these companies built them all. They showcased them on the streets and on the tracks, drawing the utmost attention during an era in which beauty and speed blended perfectly.
All these cars have grown into rare collectibles that fetch dollars by the millions. Most of them cost more than a brand new Ferrari, while numerous classic Ferraris are pricier than a mansion with a Bugatti Veyron in its huge front yard. It says a lot about the way these cars were built back in the day and the exclusivity that came with most of them. As much as we hate it, those days are never coming back. However, thanks to a number of small ventures around Europe, we can still see classic-inspired automobiles being built in the 21st century.
One of those companies is Fratelli Frigerio. It was set up by brothers Leonardo and Vittorio Frigerio in Vidigulfo, Italy with one purpose in mind: build an authentic grand tourer using coachbuilding techniques and a design inspired from the greatest Italian automobiles ever created. The result is Barchetta SS, an Alfa Romeo-powered coupe that bears an astonishing resemblance to the almighty Ferrari 250 GTO. Although only a prototype as of August 2014, the Berlinetta SS is definitely a project you need to check out.

Lamborghini and Zagato have a long history of working together, having collaborated on a handful of past one-off models, including the first Zagato-bodied Lamborghini, the 3500 GTZ. From it, a 50-year relationship was born and has culminated in the latest collaboration: the Lamborghini 5-95 Zagato.
Based on the Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4, considered as the best-selling Lamborghini in history, the 5-95 Zagato is essentially a new aesthetic look of the Gallardo LP570-4, designed by Zagato to evoke an instant classic look that shows the purest expression of Zagato’s unique coach-building skills. One look at it and you can immediately tell the noticeable differences between what a Gallardo looks like and what Zagato did to the 5-95.
Unfortunately, the supercar’s look is as far as the changes are concerned. Under its hood - and pretty much all mechanical functions - is still purely Lamborghini. What that means is you still get a 5.2-liter V-10 engine that produces 570 horsepower and 398 pound-feet of torque.
It would’ve been nice to have seen a little performance bump but we’re not complaining on how the entire collaboration came about. That’s one nice looking Zagato-commissioned Lamborghini 5-95, if we do say so ourselves.

Mini has always been one to adhere to the saying "thinking outside the box" and that was no more evident than its a recent collaboration with Italian design house Touring Superleggera to create an open-top, two-seater concept called the Superleggera Vision.
The concept made its debut at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2014 over the weekend, catching more than just the interest of those who attended the event.
It’s hard not to get caught up in the design of the Superleggera Vision because it’s been a while since Mini has a vehicle that looks as sporty and as athletic as this one. (Apologies to the current Mini Roadster, but you’re still a roofless Cooper at best).
But the Superleggera Vision is far from a disguised Cooper. Other than those headlights and the new grill on the new Cooper, this concept has its own retro-styled look and is as dynamic a Mini as there’s been in recent years.
Hopefully, this isn’t the last we see of the Mini Superleggera Vision. If we had our way, this would be in line for production in the next few years. But even if we don’t get to make that kind of decision, we’re confident that Mini will hear the public calls and consider it anyway.

Every time we see Pininfarina make the news with a new concept it’s developing, we can’t help but get excited about what the Italian coachbuilder has in store for us.
Well, it looks like Pininfarina is preparing something; a concept, it appears, that will make its debut at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este later this month.
The concept, which has been dubbed as the one-off Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupe, was designed and collaborated with BMW and comes as a notable successor to the BMW Z4 Zagato Coupe that BMW and Zagato also introduced at last year’s event.
While the two companies said nothing about it, it has been rumored that the concept is in fact a preview version of a possible 8-Series luxury car. We’re jut hopping it will become reality!

During this past week-end at the Villa d’Este Concours d’Elegance, Aston Martin has displayed the new Project AM 310 - a preview version of the next generation DBS set to be unveiled in August at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
While Aston Martin is still not offering any official details on this new concept, numerous internet sources are suggesting that the AM 310 will be powered by a 6.0-liter V12 engine with output increased to 573 HP - an increase o 63 HP over the engine currently used in model likeV12 Vantage, DBS and DB9.
Also, the new AM 310 will be featuring a lightweight construction and comes with a transaxle gearbox and wishbone suspension. The concept is also making intense use of carbon fiber elements, while it is easily to notice lots of design elements inspired by the One-77 supercar - a feature already confirmed for the next DBS.
All we can say is that sure the next DBS will be bolder and more aggressive and we can hardly wait to see it on the roads.

UPDATE 06/04/12: Aston Martin has released a new teaser video of the Project AM310, calling it "The Art of Aston Martin". It’s got plenty of shots of thunder clouds, a Japanese samurai, a fighter pilot, and even a shark - but no sign of the Project AM310. Talk about the ultimate tease.
UPDATE 06/15/12: Even if Aston Martin has already unveiled the AM 310 Project at the Villa d’Este Concours d’Elegance, the company is continuing to tease the new supercar and also announced the new 310 will arrive soon.

Aston Martin will be celebrating the iconic DB4GT Zagato’s 50th anniversary with a new concept car developed in collaboration with the Italian design house Zagato. The concept car made its first appearance at the Villa D’Este Concours on May 21st, 2011 and will make its racing debut at Nürburgring on May 28th.
Dr. Ulrich Bez, Chief Executive said: "The DNA of both Aston Martin and Zagato has combined successfully to make some of the world’s most desirable collector cars in the past and in this special anniversary year of the DB4GT Zagato it is appropriate to explore a modern collaboration. Now is the right time for a new Aston Martin Zagato and in combining our design intelligence I think we can create something fitting of the iconic DB4GT Zagato that has gone before and since established itself as one of the most famous Aston Martins of all time."
The original Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato made its first appearance in 1960 at the London Motor Show. It was essentially a much lighter DB4 GT that got worked on by the Italian Coachbuilder to include a 3670 cc straight-6 DOHC engine that produced 314 HP with a top speed of 154 mph.
UPDATE 07/01/2011: The V12 Zagato has finally been listed on the Aston Martin web page, giving us an official confirmation that it will soon go on sale. According to the web site, "only a strictly limited run of road going cars will be built" and we will get more details about in the next few weeks.
UPDATE 07/0711: Now this is what we’re talking about! Aston Martin has finally given the pricing for the V12 Zagato. But that’s where the good news ends, at least as far as those that will have a hard time affording it. Anybody who wants to score this limited edition piece of beauty will have to shell out £330,000, which is around $528,000 based on current exchange rates. Gulp.
UPDATE 08/12/11: Aston Martin announced today that the V12 Zagato concept next with the One-77 supercar will make their American debuts in Monterey from August 17th to 21st. The V12 Zagato will debut in the evening of Wednesday August 17th at McCall’s Motorworks Revival and Aston Martin has confirmed once again that a strictly limited production run of the V12 Zagato will commence in summer 2012.
"Guests will be given the rare opportunity to test drive our latest model range, including the new Virage and Vantage S, as well as the four-door Rapide" commented Julian Jenkins, Vice President Aston Martin the Americas. "We are very excited about the program this year including the debut of the V12 Zagato, and we look forward to welcoming current owners, new customers and automotive enthusiasts to share our celebrations at The Aston Martin Estate."

Pininfarina and Ferrari are two companies in the automotive industry that live and breathe pure excellence. Match them up with one of the most luxurious events of the year - the Villa d Este Concorso D’Eleganza - and the outcome is a one-off model based on either the 599 GTB Fiorano or the P540 Superfast Aperta (pictured).
Rivaling previous years’ debuts like the BMW M1 Homage and the Alfa Romeo TZ3 Corsa by Zagato, the Ferrari Super America 45 by Pininfarina is a project that was specially requested by a client from New York. It is described as a "convertible, 6 cilindri, 6000 ccm" model. While we only have the first details at the momemt, the official press release says:
"A recent and fascinating trend in the rarefied world of top end Ferrari collectors is the commissioning of one off bespoke version of high end models from Italian coach builders. Several ‘special clients’ have approached Pininfarina (and others) in recent years to build uniquely styled cars, an idea that goes back to the fifties went customers like film director Roberto Rossellini had a special car built for his wife, Ingrid Bergman. The Villa d Este is the natural setting for the exposure of such special vehicles and as well as the Glickenhaus P4/5 this year we have this very special Ferrari Super America belong to the New York."
UPDATE 05/19/2011: Ferrari has unveiled the first official details on the Superamerica 45 - another one-off model that will make its world debut this weekend at the Villa d’Este Concorso d’Eleganza. The model will be distinguished by a carbon-fiber rotating hard-top with a rear screen, body colored rear buttresses, double air vents on the front wing, a specific chromed front grille and special burnished aluminum A-pillars, wing mirrors, and door handles. The model will be painted in an exclusive Blu Antille, contrasting with darker blue on the front splitter, side skirts, and rear diffuser. For the interior, the Superamerica 45 gets Cuoio leather trim and Blu Scuro carbon fiber details, plus the latest-generation touch-screen infotainment system.

The automobile was not even thirty years old when racing had taken a firm hold on enthusiasts. Enzo Ferrari was driving his performance cars to championships all over the world and others wanted in on the action. Ettore Bugatti was one of these men and he decided to take on Ferrari in a very different way than the others. He initially started with smaller, lighter, and less powerful cars than the Ferrari racecars of the time. This allowed the cars to be more nimble on the track and even finish second behind Ferrari in the Grand Prix du Mans of 1911.
This major accomplishment gave Ettore Bugatti the supporters and money necessary to continue his small operation in Molsheim. He began to produce stronger competitors and won more races every year. By 1920, Bugatti had its own Grand Prix championship under its belt and was ready to expand the company into different areas.
Ettore was a very respected man and ran his company with an iron fist, Le Patron as he was known, acted as a member of the upper crust and often invited them for factory tours and extravagant meals. According to Bugatti lore, at one of these dinners a woman remarked, “Everyone knows you build the greatest racing cars in the world. But for a town carriage of real elegance, one must go to Rolls-Royce or Daimler, isn’t that so?” This statement must have enraged Ettore, whether he showed it or not to his guests, he knew this was true. His company had been one-dimensional for many years and it was time to take some risks in the public sector. What came next is one of the most revered luxury automobiles ever made, the Royale.

We reported at the end of July that Bugatti will bring aspecial edition Veyron Grand Sport at the Pebble Beach weekend. And here it is: the Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Sang Bleu, an exclusive supercar limited to only 20 units.
The Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Sang Bleu combines carbon fiber and polished aluminum - an innovative combination never realized before. The visual carbon fiber is tinted in royal blue to emphasize the refined volumes and surfaces of the Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport. The rear airscoops are tinted in the same nightblue – offering a dramatic view from above – and thus fluidly integrate into the overall design philosophy of this unique model.</p.
The rims are inspired by the Grand Sport Roadster and are highlighted in a Midnight Blue and Diamond Cut two tone finish. The interior is trimmed in a newly developed Gaucho leather.

Pininfarina, Vignale, Zagato, Scaglietti, Bertone, Boano & Ellena, Motto, Fissore, Boneschi, Castagna, Frua, Viotti… and Touring Superleggera. These are just a few Italian brands, who starting the beginning of the twentieth century until today (even if with just a few names remained in history), were regarded as artists in the auto market. Their clients at that moments were the nobles, the gentlemen who wanted to transform their cars into a masterpiece of design but, above all into an agile, lightweight model that could compete with any other car with no trouble.
But this was long time ago. This week-end the history made a successful return at the Concorso D’Eleganza Villa D’Este, where the Touring Superleggera, founded in 1926 by Carlo Felice Bianchi Anderlon, presented a special concept as a return to those glorious days: the Maserati A8 GCS.
The A8GCS shares the engine and the transmission with the Maserati GranTurismo; it has a weight of only 1,200 kg. The engine is placed in the front middle of the car, what makes it have the characteristic long hood and the small and short cabin.
As about its design, at the front there is a great grid typical Maserati with headlights set. At the rear dominates the characteristic four headlights with four twin discharges.
Behind this long, fastidious name there is actually a Maserati Quattroporte transformed into a station wagon by the Italian coachbuilder Carrozeria Touring Superleggera.
The Maserati Quattroporte Bellagio Fastback will make its debut t the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa D’este, April 25-27, at Lake Como in Italy.

2007 Maserati GS Zagato
While a six-figure automobile might be impressive to you and me, it takes much more than a string of zeroes to impress the wealthy. That’s where custom coachbuilders like Zagato come in, offering something the affluent tend to find far more attractive – exclusivity. Such is the case with this highly limited bespoke two-seater, dubbed the Maserati GS Zagato. Originally commissioned by Paolo Boffi, a heavyweight in the world of luxury furnishing and design, the GSZ is based on the Maserati GranSport Spyder, with styling cues taken from classic ‘50s and ‘60s gran tourers. Its all-aluminum body was handmade by Zagato, successfully trasforming the Maserati from contemporary convertible, to classic coupe.
According to Zagato, “This is the mission of a modern automobile atelier: to create timeless objects that celebrate prestigious models and brands and which, unlike mass produced vehicles, are destined to last for ever [sic].”
Sounds about right. While mechanically unaltered over the factory-spec GranSport Spyder, the exterior of the GSZ is a visual tour-de-force, happily marrying traditional Italian sports car inspiration with modern-day underpinnings.
