While the main focus at the Cupra stand this year at the Geneva International Motor Show may have been unfortunately named Formentor Concept that previews the brand’s first bespoke model, the new Ateca Special Edition undeniably drew some gazes. It has unique touches over the regular Cupra Ateca to help it stand out both visually and in terms of performance (well, only just on that last part).

What makes the Cupra Ateca Special Edition special

The 2019 Cupra Ateca Special Edition doesn’t get any more power than the regular model - 297 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque from its VW-sourced 2.0-liter TSI turbo four-pot. The same seven-speed DSG dual-clutch is the only transmission option and power is still sent to all four wheels.

But Cupra wants the Ateca Special Edition to “exude greater confidence, coolness and self-assurance” than the regular Ateca by taking its “customisation to the next level with a handcrafted vehicle.”

There’s also a rear spoiler at the back that’s there not only for show - Cupra says it makes actual downforce, although refrains to say how much of it is produced.

Finishing off the list of special features visible from the outside is the unique Graphene Grey paint finish that’s exclusive to this version of the Ateca Cupra and thanks to it “exudes even greater levels of sophistication and dynamic ability.”

This really does transform the look of the interior which already had quite a sporty feel. Those with a keen eye for detail may also spot the “inclusion of black frames surrounding the air outlets and central console, while Copper Carbon Fibre interior moldings frame the dashboard and climate controls.”

Cupra has not announced how many of these Ateca Special Edition models it plans to make, but it is a limited series version so it’s probably going to be in the hundreds. The model will become available for order this summer with deliveries beginning before the end of 2019.
