Chrysler announced plans to cut 300 of its 1,700 employees at its light truck assembly plant in Saltillo, Mexico. The plant builds Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500 series trucks, which are mainly exported to the United States and Canada. The plant is also expected to pick up production for Nissan trucks.
Last month GM also announced that it was cutting 600 jobs at its industrial complex in Silao, Mexico. The Silao plant produces some of GM’s GMT-900-based vehicles, as well as engines and transmissions.
Both Chrysler and GM attribute the job cuts directly to the slumping U.S. market. Though Chrysler will need to higher about 485 workers when production of its Phoenix engines starts next year in Saltillo. But there is good news for Mexican workers, Freightliner will be expected to have a new plant up and running in Mexico by 2009.
According to Chrysler the 2009 RAM could boast a 20 percent improvement in fuel efficiency. This can be possible because the 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 that powers the 2009 RAM is now more powerful and more efficient.
The new engine delivers 380 hp and a peak torque of 404 lbs-ft and feature an improvement of 5%. The truck’s overall weight was cut by 80 pounds and in this way the pick-up became more aerodynamically efficient.
The 2008 Ram Quad Cab Laramie is powered by a 5.7-liter Hemi gets 15 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway. Raising the highway mileage to 23 mpg on the highway makes it one of the most efficient full-size pickups on the road. Four-by-four models using the 5.7 Hemi typically hit about 17 mpg on the highway.
Chrysler also announced that the company is working on a diesel and two-hybrid versions of the 2009 RAM.
The all new 2009 Dodge Ram, presented in January 2008 at the Detroit Auto Show, is almost there. The first units should be reaching the dealerships in September.
For all the loyal Dodge Ram fans this truck should be worth the wait. The big 5.7L HEMI engine has been worked on to produce 10% more power (380hp / 404lb) and 4% better gas economy. The truck is packed with 42 clever storage spaces, such as the optional ‘ram boxes’ that act as miniature trunk space located in the rear fenders. Those boxes can be locked and are water proof as well. The interior is coming to a whole new level. With a dual tone instrument panel, featuring hand stitching and the first heated steering wheel in its class. But breaking through technology is located behind the rear wheels. The 2009 Ram will be the first pickup to receive coil over suspension. This technology is supposed to bring the Ram to another level in comfort and handling without altering its legendary capability.
We can’t wait to see if it is as good as they say it is, but it surely looks good.

Over the week-end, a picture of what was thought to be the new Dodge Ram surfaced on the internet, first on a Dodge forum site and then more broadly.

It has become something of a tradition at the North American Auto Show for automakers, particularly Chrysler, to do something spectacular to introduce and all-new model, such as driving a Jeep up the stairs and through a glass wall back in 1992.
Well, this January the folks at Chrysler, LLC want to introduce the Dodge Ram at the show, which is at Cobo Hall in Detroit. But, they want to do something that leads up to Cobo.
They want to drive a heard of cattle down Jefferson Avenue in (...)
