Dodge Charger is one of the most coveted muscle cars ever made. Like other iconic muscle cars, the mighty MOPAR has been immortalized in cinema, with movies like “Bullit”, “Deathproof”, “Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry”, and many others. But there’s another way of immortalizing an automotive icon – by reimagining it. When it comes to that, the Ringbrothers are masters at building restomods, and they just came up with a one-off, 1969 Dodge Charger that they built for a special client.

The bright yellow Charger joins a long line of exquisite Ringbrothes restomods, like the AMC Javelin AMX Defiant, Ford Mustang Mach 1 UNKL, Chevy K5 Blazer, and many others. The Dodge Charger Captiv was built for Greg Murphy – a New Zealand motorsports legend and TV personality.

While E-crate motors seem to be the hottest thing around, at least for some, Ringbrothers stick to what they know best – making special, one-off muscle cars, powered by big V-8 engines. It took 4,240 hours of work to make the Charger Captiv into what it is now, with work actually being started in New Zealand, where the car was disassembled and prepared, by Greg Murphy's team.

Drivetrain & Performance

The car was taken to Ringbrothers where it was extensively revised. One of the most crucial modifications was to convert the body-on-frame structure of the Charger into a unibody, which would significantly improve rigidity and reduce body roll. While the Charger’s original 426 Hemi V-8 was and still is an impressive unit, this reimagined version is powered by a Hellcat crate motor that develops 707 horsepower and 650 pound-feet (881 Nm). The soundtrack is further enhanced by Flowmaster intake headers.

Power from the supercharged V-8 is sent to the rear through the proven Bowler Tremec T-56 six-speed manual and a QA1 carbon-fiber driveshaft. The fuel pump and fuel tank are supplied by Rick's Hot Rods, and the Charger's wiring has been completely upgraded, by Painless Wiring. The reimagined MOPAR features a front and rear suspension, as well as a chassis from Art Morison. It also has RideTech adjustable shock absorbers and John’s Industries 9-inch rear end.

Wheels, Tires, and Brakes

The Ringbrothers 1969 Charger comes with a staggered set of HRE Ringbrothers Edition Recoil wheels, measuring 19 by 11 inches at the front and 20 by 13 inches at the rear. They are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4S, 295/35.19 front and 345/30x20 rear. Stopping power comes from Baer disc brakes with six-piston red calipers, all-around.

Exterior

Ringbrothers have done extensive metalwork, ensuring not a single inch of the Charger’s body remained unchanged, despite it retaining the classic 1969 aesthetics. The exterior of the car has been finished in BASF “Speed Violation Yellow”, which seems to be just a shade brighter than the Butterscotch /Bahama Yellow color, which was one of the high-impact colors, available on MOPARs, between 1969 and 1971.

The shade of yellow is also known as Porsche Signal Yellow and is complimented by chrome-plated exterior details, such as the wheel rims, grille, bumpers, and other exterior elements.

Interior

The interior of the 1969 Charger has been fully customized with help from Upholstery Unlimited. While the overall classic layout has been, mostly, retained, all the materials have been upgraded. Ringbrothers have used the opportunity to present, for the first time, their new custom steering wheel. The vintage-inspired gauge cluster comes from MoTec and is complemented by a Vintage Air Gen IV Magnum Evap Kit Air System, and Fusion Head Unit with Kicker Speakers, in case you want to blast Highway song by Blackfoot, in your MOPAR.

Final thoughts

The Charger Captiv is more than just another modernized MOPAR. Ringbrothers’ latest creation is a one-off special and it shows that even if electric powertrains have made it to the Hot Rod scene, big V-8 engines are not going anywhere, just yet. The Dodge Charger Captiv is not just a modern take on a classic American muscle. It’s a classic muscle, turned up to 11. Yes, the 6.2-liter Hellcat V-8 is a modern piece, but only on paper. It’s still an old-school, pushrod V-8, just like the original MOPARs of the Muscle car’s Golden era.

Co-owner of Ringbrothers, Jim Ring, said: “This project has been years in the making”. It all started in New Zealand, which is 8,000 miles (approx. 12,900 km), and was finished at the Ringbrothers’ facility, in Spring Green, Wisconsin. This officially makes the Charger Captiv, one of the most epic transnational Muscle car builds, ever executed.
