The Mercedes portfolio is as loaded as you can expect it to be. The German automaker offers nearly 30 products in the U.S., which does not include the AMG-specific models. From sedans to sports cars, Mercedes will have something for you if you’ve got the money. But, catering to the booming SUV segment is one aspect that the company has perfected lately and deserves a special mention. Mercedes has a buttload of SUVs in a price bracket ranging from the mid-30s to nearly $200,000. The company also has some electric SUVs in the reckoning that will arrive in the near future. Here’s how the automaker’s SUV portfolio looks at the moment:

Mercedes GLE

As you climb up the German automaker’s lineup, things start to get serious. The GLE isn’t the entry-level model, but it ranks at the top of our list. The exquisite touches, attention to detail, and the features on offer are as good as they can get at this price point. The conjoined screens on the dash make an appearance in the GLE, which comprises two 12.3-inch screens. The MBUX-powered system is not just a touchscreen; it can also be operated by writing on the console touchpad or swiping on the steering wheel touch controls. This Mercedes SUV is also quite spacious and practical, with stuff like six-way power-adjustable seats in the second row and power-folding seatbacks for easy ingress and egress for the third-row passengers; if you opt for the seven-seat option, that is. Offered in three trims – four if you count the AMG version – the 2022 Mercedes GLE range starts at $56,150. If you find the exterior design too bland, you can opt for the coupe version, which starts at a whopping $78,450!

Mercedes GLS

Enter the biggest, baddest SUV that Mercedes has got – the GLS. It looks butch, has an insane road presence, but does not look as aggressive as a vehicle of this magnitude should look. It’s more like a tame elephant than a roaring lion; calm, yet intimidating. But, that’s not a bad thing. This is the plushest, most luxurious SUV that you can have with a five-digit price tag. Even folks in the third row will enjoy features that are usually limited to passengers in the first and second row. The GLS comes with four ventilated and massaging seats, heated second-row seats, and five-zone climate control. You can even opt for a six-seat setup that will replace the middle row bench with captain’s chairs at no extra cost. But, just because it’s luxurious doesn’t mean you can’t do big-boy things with it. Wait, that doesn’t sound right. This Mercedes SUV allows you to tow up 7,700 pounds, which is quite impressive. The luxury SUV also comes with an independent air suspension, thus making the ride quality much better for third-row occupants. The 2022 Mercedes GLS starts at $77,850.

Mercedes G-Class

How can we not have the legendary, the iconic, the immortal G-Class on this list? At a time when automakers have to change the design philosophies and languages every few years, Mercedes is proudly retaining the G-Class’ boxy stature generation after generation. But, things on the inside and under the skin are constantly improving. Ambient lighting, dual 12.3-inch screens, hot stone massage, three-zone climate control, etc. make sure people don’t discount the G-Wagen as an old-school SUV that can’t live up to the current standards. Powered by a V-8 engine, it makes over 400 horses in the standard form. Opt for the AMG-fied G63 model and you’ll not only get close to 600 horses, but also a range of off-road tech that makes this arguably the best luxury off-roader that money can buy you today. The 2021 G-Class starts at $131,750, whereas the AMG G63 will set you back by $156,450. Go for the optional packages and accessories, and the price will go dangerously close to the $200,000 territory.

Mercedes GLA

The GLA is the cheapest of the Mercedes Benz SUV models. This compact SUV looks decent on the outside and rides on wheels ranging between 18- and 20-inch, depending on the trim. It comes with a luxurious cabin, as expected from any car that proudly wears the tri-star badge. The highlight of Mercedes’ vehicles are the levels of customization, courtesy of optional themes, accessories, and packages, and the GLA is no exception either. In terms of tech, the GLA comes with two seven-inch screens, one serving as the digital instrument cluster and the other, a touchscreen system. You can even opt for a 10.25-inch touchscreen system. Mercedes even offers it with the full-blown AMG treatment that makes this a pocket-rocket. For a starting price of a little over $36,000, the 2022 GLA is a good entry point into the luxury segment.

Mercedes-Maybach GLS

The Mercedes-Maybach GLS is the epitome of luxury and the flagship Mercedes SUV model. With an eye-watering price tag of $160,500, the Maybach GLS is not cheap by any means, but it can be regarded as a poor man’s Rolls-Royce Cullinan. I may get brickbats from the fans of this SUV, but I’ll risk it and say that the Maybach GLS is the ugliest vehicle in the company’s lineup. It’s like putting gaudy makeup on an elephant. But, get past this and step inside, and you’ll enter a different universe altogether. The Maybach reeks of luxury from every nook and cranny. The power seats at the front and rear with lounge-like adjustment and massage features seem like a straight lift from a spa. There are things like hand-finished wood elements, a grand power sunroof, a 27-speaker Burmester sound system, a refrigerated compartment, silver champagne flutes handcrafted by Robbe & Berking, and so on. Whether you’re driving it yourself or being chauffeur-driven, the Maybach GLS will not disappoint you.

Mercedes GLC

While the GLA and the GLB are not mediocre in any way, the GLC is the starting point if you want to experience true luxury and plushness. It comes with natural-grain woods, genuine aluminum switches, and a spectrum of hand-fitted upholstery. A 10.25-inch touchscreen graces the center console and it supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Mercedes also lets you pick either a digital instrument cluster or analog gauges, if you want to stay a little old-school. This mid-size SUV offers good space inside the cabin. The standard models come with a four-pot engine, but the AMG trim is offered with a V-6. The 2022 Mercedes GLC starts at $43,850. If the SUV is not to your liking, you can also opt for the coupe version that features a sloping roofline for a curvaceous look. It will also set you back by nearly nine thousand bucks more.

Mercedes GLB

The GLB is for the folks who don’t want an SUV with a humongous footprint, but need it to be more spacious than the GLA. On the outside, it looks more of a shrunken GLC than a grown-up GLA, further distancing itself from the entry-level model. The cabin specs and features are more or less the same as the GLA – 64-color ambient lighting, seven-inch touchscreen, etc. Although it is a five-seater as standard, the GLB is available as a seven-seater as well. With the second and third-row flipped down, there’s 62 cubic feet of cargo space available at your disposal. It comes in the same state of tune as the GLA, which makes the GLB a smidge slower than its smaller sibling courtesy of the added weight, but it’s no deal-breaker. The 2022 Mercedes GLB starts at $38,600.

Mercedes EQB

The entries moving forward are honorary mentions and can't be ranked since they haven't arrived yet. It’s no secret that Mercedes and Audi are going berserk when it comes to electrification. But, all hell broke loose at the 2021 IAA Show in Munich when Mercedes rolled out not one, not two, but five EQ products! One of the products among them was the EQB, an electric compact SUV that’s due to come out in the summer of 2022. The EQB will be a five-seater as standard, but you’ll be able to opt for a third row as well. It will feature a 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a similar-sized touchscreen powered by the MBUX infotainment system.

It will be offered in two trims – the EQB 300 and the EQB 350. The EQB 300 puts out 225 horses and 288 pound-feet of twist, whereas the 350 churns out 288 ponies and 324 pound-feet of torque. Both of them feature a dual-motor setup and the company’s 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system. The EQB will be powered by a 66.5 kWh battery pack that offers a WLTP-rated range of 260 miles. The EPA range, not announced yet, should be around 225 miles. The Mercedes EQB will start at $56,800 and top out at $61,400 before options.

Mercedes-Maybach EQS

Mercedes has already started giving the AMG treatment to its vehicles – the AMG EQS and the AMG EQE. But, the automaker hasn’t forgotten about Maybach either. Mercedes is planning for a Maybach SUV, the “EQ-uivalent” of the GLS, called the – wait for it – EQS. But, there’s already an EQS in the lineup, and that’s a sedan (confusion intensifies!)

Anyway, the Maybach EQS SUV comes with a big black shiny panel with chrome pinstripes up front. It receives the typical dual-tone bright Maybach treatment. The lower half is finished in Zircon Red Metallic and the upper half in Obsidian Black. The B-pillars come with the ‘M’ badge and the SUV rides on massive 24-inch wheels. Inside the cabin, the SUV will come with the 56-inch Hyperscreen that spans pretty much the entire dash. There are no details yet about the powertrain and the outputs, but the German noted that the Maybach EQS SUV will offer a range of 373 miles. It’s still some time away, so we should be hearing more about it in the coming months.

Mercedes EQG Concept

Mercedes-Benz

Mercedes has also stated that the electric G-Class, called the EQG, is in the pipeline. The concept was unveiled at the 2021 IAA Show, but not a lot was revealed back then. It came with a black panel grille that housed the illuminated logo. The concept was sitting pretty on 22-inch polished aluminum wheels. At the rear where you usually spot the spare wheel cover, Mercedes had installed a lockable box with white illuminated accents that looked like a wallbox. It can be used to store the charging cable. Apart from all this, there are LED lights and strips all around, including on the roof.

While the power outputs were not revealed, Mercedes noted that the production-spec EQG will feature a quad-motor setup and will receive the AMG treatment as well. As for the hardcore gear, the electric SUV will come with an independent front suspension, an off-road capable chassis, and a two-speed gearbox. Recently, the automaker revealed a video wherein an EQG prototype was seen doing tank turn - or the G-turn, in Mercedes' speak - much similar to what the Rivian R1T is capable of doing. For now, this is all we know about the electric G-wagen, but we are sure to hear more about it in the coming months.
