What does "Mercedes" means?

It is a Spanish word and means Mercies.

Many of you know that on 22 November 1990, Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschat had produced a special car and named it after his ten-year-old daughter Mercedes. It was a 35 hp model that could hit a top speed of 55 mph. But what does Mercedes really means? The name Mercedes it is taken from one of the titles given to Virgin Mary in Spain: "Maria de las Mercedes" (Mary of the Mercies; ’Our Lady of Ransom’). In latin ’mercedes’ originally meant ’wages’ or ’ransom’.
