Fastest SUV In The World
With the SUV market currently on fire, this beast is the fastest one of the allby Khris Bharath, on
Now an SUV comes with the added advantage of being practical, however, what does this mean for the rational folks out there who’ve had to sacrifice their mid-engined sports car or coupe for a lumbering SUV. Well, manufacturers have addressed this with the performance SUV. But which one is the fastest one out there, well that is a race that is constantly evolving as manufacturers will go to any length to lay claim to that crown.
SUV. The very first one as most of you know was the original Willys CJ, which was a combat vehicle commissioned to help the war effort in Europe. After the second world war, the British and the Japanese adopted the idea with the Land Rover Series 1 and the original Toyota Land Cruiser and there was no looking back. Back then, these go-anywhere vehicles were seen as crude and rugged farm vehicles.
The Dawn Of The Performance SUV
By the time the 80s and 90s came along, we saw the dawn of the very first performance SUVs. Think Lamborghini LM002 or the GMC Typhoon. But it wasn’t until Porsche came up with Cayenne in the early 2000s did things start to gain traction. These SUVs were basically designed to defy the laws of physics.
Fast forward to today and SUVs are the hottest selling vehicles of the dealer lot. So much so that major automakers like Ford have ceased production of passenger cars, i.e body styles like hatchbacks, wagons, etc, and are now focusing exclusively on trucks and SUVs. Of course, the Mustang and the GT supercar are still around.
Now that they’ve given up on these body styles, people now want the sportiest and fastest performance in their SUVs and that’s exactly what I’ll be touching upon in this post. Now there are different interpretations and claims to the world’s fastest SUV, which I have also enlisted below, but clearly, there can only be one.
Fastest SUV In The World - Toyota Land Speed Cruiser
The Toyota Land Speed Cruiser is a highly modified LC200 that was purpose-built to break the world record for the fastest SUV. It is a one-off vehicle built by TRD or Toyota Racing Division back in 2017. It was going to be unlike any other 4x4 or Land Cruiser before it.
The Land Cruiser’s stock 5.7 liter V-8 was given a thorough once over. The displacement was taken up to 6.2 liters and was fitted out with two Garrett turbos that put out an extra 55 pounds of boost. A custom intercooler along with a hand-built polished intake manifold delivered air to the dual overhead cams of the V-8. Depending on the ECU Tune, the Land Speed Cruiser puts out anywhere between 1500 to 2000 horsepower.
But in order to achieve the speeds that it wanted to, this LC was fitted out with better suspension, brakes, and performance tires. You have fox racing shocks along with a lowered ride height, a flat floor in order to improve airflow under the vehicles, and super-wide Michelin Pilot Super Sports tires.
“At 225mph, the thing was wandering a little bit. All I could think was that [the test driver] said, ‘No matter what, just keep your foot down,’ and we got 230mph” - Carl Edwards
Toyota roped in NASCAR driver Carl Edwards to take this thing to the MAX. The venue? A two-mile runway at the Mojave Air And Space Port in California. Carl was able to hit a mind-numbing 230.2 mph in an SUV that weighs somewhere in the ballpark of 5000+ pounds. However, the weight was significantly reduced as all the seats were taken out and replaced with a single lightweight sports seat.
Fastest Production SUV - Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S coupe Brabus 900 Rocket Edition
Based on the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S coupe, the Brabus 900 Rocket Edition certainly has a fitting name and is currently the fastest production SUV in the world. Brabus being a tuner, they took the stock Mercedes 4.5 liter V-8 engine and turned it up to 11. As the name suggests, this beast of an SUV produces a colossal 900 horsepower and 774 pound-feet of torque. The V-8 is also paired with a 48-Volt EQ boost system.
In order to achieve these biblical figures, several mods were carried out on the High-Performance SUV including enlarged pistons and cylinders, longer piston rods, balanced billet crankshaft, bigger turbos with a larger compressor, a modified stainless steel exhaust units with titanium/carbon tips were used. The mods, however, don’t stop there as the Rocket Edition also features advanced aero including a new chin spoiler and a rear carbon fiber rear diffuser.
The end result? A 0-60 mph time of just 3.2 seconds and a top speed of, wait for it. 205 mph, making this Brabus 900 Rocket Edition, the fastest production SUV in the world. Now to put that into context, that is a number in the ballpark of some old-school hypercars like the McLaren Mercedes SLR and the Porsche Carrer GT, in an SUV that weighs 5390 pounds.
Now considering you can’t buy the Land Speed Cruiser, many would argue that the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 Brabus 900 Rocket Edition is the fastest SUV in the world. Production is limited to just 25 examples, in order to help maintain exclusivity. This will ensure that only a handful of people will be able to experience the lunacy and the ability of this behemoth to go beyond the double tonne.
Quickest SUV In The World - Aston Martin DBX 707
Now while it is nowhere near the fastest SUV in the world, this Aston was well worth mentioning. With a 0-60 mph time of just 3.1 seconds, the new Aston Martin DBX707 is the world’s quickest ’luxury’ and most powerful SUV in 2022. Originally launched in 2019, the DBX line is Aston’s most successful model ever in terms of volumes and the SUV was recently given a thorough facelift in 2022.
Under the hood of the DBX707 lies an AMG sourced 4.0 liter twin-turbo V-8 engine that puts out a whopping 697 horsepower and 147 pound-feet of torque. You’ve got an extra boost thanks to those new turbos It’s about 155 horsepower and 147 pound-feet of torque more than the standard DBX. Power is sent to all four wheels via a new nine-speed wet-clutch transmission. The DBX707 is also the most powerful Aston Martin fitted with a V-8 engine. Engage race mode and the Aston Martin can take you to scintillating 183 mph.
Now although Although Aston’s claim of 3.1 seconds to 60 mph, Car&Driver were able to clock the Lamborghini Urus at 3.1 seconds while the Drag Times managed to do it in just 2.93 seconds. We currently live in the age of EVs and Drag Times also pushed the limits of the New Tesla Model X Plaid achieving a truly astonishing time of 2.3 seconds to 60 mph.
