Ferrari's Icona series expands from a two-piece to a trio with the debut of the Daytona SP3. The mid-engined supercar with a 'Targa' top that revives the glory of the triple from the 1967 24 Hours of Daytona in a current car, was presented at Mugello. With the 6.5-liter naturally aspirated V-12 engine the Daytona SP3 hides the DNA of the LaFerrari under its stunning carbon fiber bodywork.

Overview

In recent years, Ferrari has gone even further with its road cars, creating a series of exceedingly unique versions that pay homage to classic Ferraris from the past, and hence was born the Ferrari ICONA series, a family of vehicles with the notion of creating something truly unique, something that does not exist on the market, linking the brands glorious past to its future.

The Ferrari Monza SP1 and Monza SP2 were thus born as two Barchettas inspired by iconic racing models from the 1950s such as the 166 MM, 750 Monza Spider, and 860 Monza. The third model in the ICONA series, the Daytona SP3, is inspired by Sports Prototypes from the 1960s, such as the legendary Ferrari 330 Daytona P4 and 1967 350 Can-Am.

This foundation is now adorned with a new and appealing body made entirely of carbon fiber, which seeks to replicate those prototype forms of the 1960s, with a design of voluptuous but clean shapes, such as wheel arches in the style of the 1960s, its wraparound windshield, or its air inlets and outlets with a grid style with horizontal lines to lend a more classic look.

A Ferrari, on the other hand, would not be a Ferrari if its form did not also follow its function. There are no active features or big spoilers on this car, but if there are flaps, as in the models from which it is inspired, all aerodynamic elements are blended into the bodywork. Air ducts, for example, are built into the butterfly doors to send airflow to the side air intakes.

The most eye-catching aspect of this setup by far is that it is a 'Targa' convertible model with a carbon-fiber roof. It is manually removable and can be left at home when not in use; in fact, the tiny front trunk only has a place for an emergency canvas roof.

Interior

The interior is just as athletic as the exterior. The seats are merged into the chassis, resulting in a somewhat horizontal seating position comparable to that of a Formula 1 Grand Prix car. However, the pedal box can be adjusted to ensure that the driver will always be sitting comfortably and that everything is under control.

The Daytona SP has a fully digital dashboard with a curved 16-inch screen to view all of the car's information. All of this makes for a high-quality interior that incorporates not only high-tech materials like carbon fiber but also Kevlar in areas like the door. As you might expect from a Limited Edition vehicle, the entire car is highly customizable through Ferrari's Taylor Made division.

Performance

It comes as no surprise that the engine is built of exotic Formula 1 tech, although Ferrari has made some technical improvements Of course, only a V-12 engine can be counted as a source of power for a car as special as this one. The 6.5-liter naturally aspirated engine serves as the powerhouse for the Daytona SP3.

The V-12 revs to 9,500 rpm, and produces 840 horsepower and maximum torque of 477 pound-feet of torque. Power is transferred to the rear wheels using a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. This prancing horse does 0-60 mph in just 2.85 seconds. It takes the Daytona SP3, 7.4 seconds to do 125mph from a standstill and will go on to a claimed top speed that exceeds 212 mph. As a result, this twelve-cylinder V-12 engine is the most powerful combustion engine to come out of Maranello.

As far as tires are concerned, Pirelli has created its own P Zero Corsa tires for Ferrari's third Icona model, which are rated at 265/30 ZR20 at the front and 345/30 ZR21 at the rear, which are necessary to put this level of power to the ground.

Conclusion

To sum it up, the successor of the La Ferrari is nothing short of a masterpiece. Considering that this glorious chapter of internal combustion will soon be coming to an end, Ferrari has done a wonderful job by integrating several design elements from different models from the Italian marques past.

The Ferrari Daytona SP3 will be limited to just 599 copies, with a price tag of 2.2 million euros ($2.26 million), and will begin deliveries in late 2022 and continue until 2024. But considering how this model, marks an end of an era, having such a car in one's collection should be well worth the asking price.
