Fisker Bankrolls Development of New EV SUV With Talent From Toyota and VW
Less than a month since we saw the first previews of Fisker’s sort-of-affordable electric SUV, the company releases another preview and more information on the development process. Fisker is enlisting the help of a former Toyota and Volkswagen Manufacturing Executive to make the model a hit in a world that’s soon to be flooded by Rivians and NIOs, among others.
Fisker, the company that was once making outlandish sports cars on BMW or Mercedes-Benz underpinnings is no more. Henrik Fisker, the founder of Fisker Automotive, seemed unphased by the bankruptcy of his company by bouncing back in 2016 when he announced that he’s establishing Fisker Inc. Since then, Fisker unveiled an almighty yacht concept, a boxy electric shuttle, and an electric sedan called eMotion. Now, apparently, next in his sights in the compact SUV segment which he plans to tackle with a vehicle that should cost about $40,000.
Fisker’s Second Run Looks Promising Thanks to an Investment From Caterpillar for Solid-State Battery Technology
Competition in the all-electric passenger vehicle segment is heating up, and one of the major points of contention is battery technology. Lithium-ion packs are all the rage these days, but critical figures like range-per-charge and charge times are lagging compared to the internal combustion alternatives. However, technology development might soon turn the tables, and now, it looks as though Caterpillar is considering solid-state batteries as a possible investment for the future.
The Fisker eMotion Has a Beautiful Interior
The Fisker eMotion’s debut at the Consumer Electronics Show caught a few people by surprise. The debut itself was expected, but the features in the car were more than what most people thought they’d be. The eMotion’s interior is a good example of that. In a word, it’s beautiful. That doesn’t come as a shock to those who know Henrik Fisker’s work, but in some ways, the legendary auto designer seems to have outdone himself this time.

If you’ve never heard the name Fisker before, let me give you a brief summary. The name comes from Henrik Fisker, a Danish-born entrepreneur and automotive designer currently residing in Los Angeles. Mr. Fisker worked his pen designing such show stoppers as the Aston Martin DB9, BMW Z8, Galpin-Fisker Mustang Rocket, and VLF Force 1 V10, among others. In 2007, he founded Fisker Automotive, consequently unveiling the Fisker Karma hybrid sports sedan in 2011. Long story short, the Karma didn’t pan out all that great, and Fisker resigned as chairman of the company that bore his name in 2013. But that was then, and now, Fisker has a new automotive startup, and even a new model to go with it. It’s called the EMotion, and it’s framed as a luxurious all-electric four-door with quick performance, groundbreaking solid-state battery technology, and upwards of 400 miles of range per charge, not to mention supercar good looks and Level 4 self-driving capability.
The new firm is called Fisker Inc., and the EMotion will be the company’s very first offering. But it’s not easy to break into the premium EV segment, especially when you consider all the other companies out there vying to do exactly the same. Pair that with growing competition from all the established makes currently doubling down on electric vehicles, and you’re left with odds of success akin to an ice cube’s chance in Hades.
That said, Fisker is no novice in this space. Sure, the Karma didn’t exactly pan out they way it was intended, but when consider Fisker’s vast industry connections and knowledge, Fisker Inc. might actually have a shot at making it. Yes, it’s an extremely bold endeavor, and yes, the claims getting tossed around the EMotion smell a lot like vaporware. But hey – if that guy who made PayPal can do it, why not Fisker?

It’s sharp as a tack, has aero bits for days, and carries what can only be described as one of the funkiest door configurations of any car we’ve seen in recent memory. If you thought the Tesla Model X’s falcon doors were treats for the senses, prepare yourselves for what the eMotion has to offer.

Less than two years have passed since then, and Fisker unveiled his first automobile in years. It’s called the EMotion, it’s gorgeous to look at, and it has the coolest set of four doors ever created.

Merry Christmas: Henrik Fisker Teases the EMotion’s Interior Just Weeks Before CES Debut
It’s been a long time coming, but the Fisker Emotion looks like it’ll be the best thing created since toilet paper… or… uh, at least since the Tesla Model S, anyway. Looking at the important bits – it could use Fisker’s new battery, so it’ll have 500 miles of range, it’s gorgeous, and is said to offer level 5 autonomy. Butterfly doors are also standard because, well, Fisker. But, the one thing we haven’t had the chance to lay eyes on yet is the interior, but that’s soon about the change as Fisker gears up for a full review at CES in January. And, before that happens, the man has decided to release a sketch showing off a basic design concept with a massive color palette followed by a shot of a door trim panel being wrapped in leather. Let’s check ‘em out…
Fisker’s New Battery Patent Promises 500-Mile Range; One-Minute Charging
Fisker, the company that has worked diligently to bring about a dead-to-rights Tesla Model S fighter, has just announced a new battery patent that promises a new technology capable of ranges exceeding 500 miles and one-minute recharging. Let me say that again: One-minute recharging.
Details are still rather thin at this point, but we have learned that Fisker’s new power storage technology will allow the company to build solid-state batteries with lots of surface area in comparison to the current thin-film solid-state electrodes currently in development and use. This ultimately means better conductivity below the shell which, in turn, makes for a battery that works better in cold weather and charges faster. Keep in mind; this is why lithium-ion batteries are the go-to right now for EVs – the current capabilities of solid-state batteries are insufficient and low conductivity levels is a primary cause of this. So, if what Fisker is saying is true, the company could have just solved a very big problem and could, very well, usher in the next generation of battery technology.
Of course, Fisker isn’t the only company gunning for solid-state batteries, and Toyota has even promised its battery would be put to use in electric cars by 2022, just two years sooner than what Fisker claims it can do. Then again, Toyota hasn’t proved its technology, so it still has the same burden that has now be thrust onto Fisker’s shoulders as well. It’s obviously an arms race in which the winner will reign supreme in the EV world. In the end, Fisker if lofting out claims for density 2.5 times that of current lithium-ion batters, which means these babies could charge in minutes and offer up ranges of 500 miles. Just think, you can pull into a “gas station” and by the time you make up your hot dogs, buy a beverage, and take a leak, you’re EV is good for another 500 miles. Range Anxiety? Not in this future. The question now is: Who’s going to deliver on these lofty promises first?
Toyota still has a few years, and the man behind Fisker isn’t exactly working with a full deck of successful resumes either. He hasn’t exactly been the most successful cat on the street, and he promises an advanced battery in the Emotion just to retract his claims. But, for EVs to be truly successful, this is the kind of technology we need, and if we’re really this close – Toyota claims 2022 and Fisker 2024 – we’ll certainly be seeing it happen in most of our lifetimes. And, once that technology is there, there isn’t really a need for the ICE anymore either now is there?

Fisker EMotion Prototype Revealed – Reservations Start At $2,000
Premium all-electric sports car fans, say hello to the latest four-door vying for your lust and adoration. It’s called the EMotion, and it comes from Henrik Fisker, the renowned auto designer who gave shape to rides like the Aston Martin DB9 and VLF Force 1 V10, among others. The EMotion is Fisker’s second attempt at creating an electrified performance machine, following the Karma hybrid sedan unveiled back in 2011. While attractive and technologically impressive, the Karma was a bit too complicated for its own good, resulting in the occasional parking lot fire and not much success. But now, the calendar says 2017, and the EMotion looks like a solid effort that could very well avoid the shortcomings of the Karma and redeem the Fisker nameplate.
Fisker revealed a picture of the official prototype model in a tweet, following up with a video on the Fisker website. The specs are impressive – up to 400 miles is possible between charge-ups, while just 9 minutes will yield as much as 125 miles, beating the Tesla Supercharger system by a wide margin (30 minutes for 170 miles). Thing is, our friends over at electrek report the EMotion will run on regular old lithium-ion batteries, rather than a graphene supercapacitor promised before, so we wouldn’t be surprised if those numbers changed, although the Fisker website is still claiming the figures above. Either way, Fisker is taking pre-orders now, asking $2,000 for a deposit. Pricing is set at $130,000. Tune in tomorrow for the official debut.

Fisker Finally Moves On From The Mustache Grille!
As innovative and pioneering as the Fisker Karma was, most people probably remember it for having the strangest looking front grille in the auto industry. Sure, it wasn’t on the level of the Mitsuoka Orichi, but not a lot of people had anything flattering to say about that grille. But, it seems Fisker has learned its lesson; new teaser photos of the company’s EMotion electric sports car reveal a much more fluid-looking car that’s more in line with Henrik Fisker’s reputation as one of the best auto designers in the industry.
The teaser photos actually don’t reveal much of the whole car, but they did show some significant details that are, no doubt, worth mentioning. The “panther-looking” headlight set-up is there and the smaller front grille doesn’t steal too much attention away from the section’s overall design quite like how the old mustache grille became one of the enduring design characteristics of the Karma for all the wrong reasons. The front bumper of the car is also a lot more subdued than the one found in the concept while the pair of hood scopes are now located further back on the hood, just in front of the windshield. Based on the photos, you might even say that the EMotion bears some similarities to the Jaguar F-Type. We’ll only know for sure when the car makes its debut this coming August. For now, I think that the EMotion already looks better than the Karma ever did.
