Chevrolet’s release of the all new Camaro ZL1 at the 2011 Chicago Auto Show allowed them to reignite the muscle car wars that have been burning up the automotive websites for a good and long time. But before Chevrolet can shout out "Checkmate,"

Ford has answered the ZL1 with an update car of their own: the 2013 Shelby GT500. Recent spy shots have revealed that the company is already testing the 2013MY GT500 and it will be more powerful than ever.

The Camaro ZL1’s LSA 6.2L supercharged V-8 engine producing an estimated 550 horsepower and 550 pound-feet. of torque is nothing to shake a stick at, but Ford has one-upped them once again. The Eaton M112 supercharger that is being housed in the current GT500’s V8 engine will be replaced with the more-efficient and quieter TVS unit. The V8 engine found in the 2013 model will also get modified and bumped up to 5.8L, all while producing up to 650 horsepower and making it the most powerful, factory made Mustang ever! The game continues...Your move Chevrolet.

UPDATE 07/02/2012: Ford has unveiled a new video featuring the 2013 Shelby GT500 as it goes out to the quarter-mile drag strip to see what it’s made of.

Exterior and Interior

Compared to the current GT500, the 2013 model will get improvements on both the exterior and the interior. The exterior look will be "more modern and edgy," which probably means the head and tail lamps will get LEDs. In addition, the next GT500 will keep its basic rear-suspension design, but will probably get a new set of wheels and an overall improved look.

For the 2013 model year, Ford will increase the V8 engine’s displacement from the current 5.4-liter to a 5.8-liter displacement. The result is an increase from 550 horsepower to a staggering 662 horsepower HP. Next to a bigger engine, the existing Eaton M112 supercharger will be replaced by a more efficient and quieter TVS unit. This can be translated into better performance numbers. Rumors suggest that the top speed will go up to an impressive 190 mph.

When Can I Buy One?

The 2013 Shelby GT500 will go on sale at the end of 2012. The base price is $54,200, but if you want to add the SVT Performance Package, it jumps up by another $3,495. This package includes: Torsen limited-slip differential, 19" forged-aluminum front wheels or 20" forged-aluminum rear wheels, Bilstein adjustable dampers, unique rear springs, a unique instrument cluster, and an SVT gear shift knob. A glass roof will add yet another $1,995, while an electronic package adds another $2,340.

The Competition

Not since the glory days of Muhammad Ali and the recently departed Smokin’ Joe Frazier do we have two industry heavyweights at the top of their game, dueling for muscle car supremacy.

The Shelby GT500 versus the Camaro ZL1.

By sheer force of power alone, the latter’s LSA 6.2-liter supercharged V8 engine that produces 580 horsepower and 556 lb/ft of torque falls just short of the frightening capabilities of the 2013 Shelby GT500 and it’s powerful 5.0-liter V8.

Anybody can draw arguments for both cars and there’s really no right or wrong answer as far as preferences are concerned. But in our minds, power is gold, especially in the muscle car world.

The Camaro ZL1 is an awesome muscle car worthy of the acclaim it has received. But it’s met its match with the 2013 Shelby GT500 and the early returns say that 650 horsepower beats out 580 all the time.

In the ZL1’s defense, it may be a little short when it comes to power, but the Camaro has the advantage of being cheaper as it is priced at $50K, plus it will go on sale at the beginning of 2012. Some may even say that it also looks better than the GT500.

The 2012 Nissan GT-R is also a real competitor for the 2013 Shelby GT500. The Japanese model is powered by a VR38DETT 3.8-liter V6 twin turbo engine that delivers 540 HP and is mated to a 6 speed dual clutch transmission. The GT-R will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just three seconds making it faster than both the American models, but it is also much more expensive, coming in at $89,950 for the Premium model and $95,100 for the Black Edition.

Mustang Eater .....THE COBRA IS NOT A CONCEPTC! Its here I road in one yesterday and mine is on order, be hereA Aug 10. It will hit 196 seen it done on you tube testing. It is 662 hp 638 torque. 0-60 3.5 with launch control. It is scary fast. Yes its more expensive than the camara with tax and all mine was 64,700 but hey its cheaper than the ZR1 and more HP. Not knocking the ZL1 but when it comes down to the mind blowing acceleration the Shelby takes it by far on the track with the magnetic ride control the Camaro would probably be neck and neck both are good but I prefer the ford. Its the last year for Carroll Shelby to be involved since he passed away. All I can say is becareful in that Camaro bc if you pull up next to a 2013 gt500 Cobra your gonna get bitten.

These articles cracks me up. This new cobra muestang is only a concept and the top speed is suggested! And this car hasn’t even been produced But fords already one up’d Chevy? The price on the ZL1 is less then the projected price of this car. I think we need to wait till the thing is produced to write this article.

Isn’t its value too high for what it only has?

  (592) posted on 06.11.2012

Although what it possesses are impressive, I don’t think its pricing is right.

  (797) posted on 06.8.2012

Well, you can’t expect it to be cheap when it is impressively equipped with a highly powerful engine, and can perform astoundingly. The matter to me is that I’m not really fond of how it looks like.

Muscle cars of Chevrolet are undeniably powerful. I’ll remain a fanatic of Muscle cars, especially if built and branded by Chevrolet.

If anybody has noticed it has more horsepower than a ZR1 by 12hp and is half the price good deal

I think this vehicle is only for men like I like it in the finished vehicle transformer muscles appear to toughen its look.

  (647) posted on 04.18.2012

I don’t even like intimidating muscle cars, but its features inexplicably captivated me. It’s probably because the performance is clearly powerful.

  (445) posted on 04.17.2012

The components that stand out are only minimal. I don’t like it, based solely on its figure.

  (444) posted on 04.13.2012

As its figure is awkward and its color is dull, I am so not interested on this.

  (595) posted on 04.12.2012

I guess Ford really is for men; as a woman, I don’t see its appeal. As for generalizing, the muscles appear to toughen its look.

  (449) posted on 03.23.2012

I really like this car. The concept is neat; the physique is very aggressive, and the engine is monstrous. This is my kind of a muscle car.

  (401) posted on 03.22.2012

Good blockage, Ford. However, I don’t particularly like this. Maybe the only feature that attracted me was the taillights.

  (579) posted on 03.20.2012

Of all the Ford cars I’ve seen, I think this is the one I don’t like the most. What’s with the big figure and cheap paint job?

  (474) posted on 03.18.2012

Sorry, but this isn’t appealing on the slightest to me. Moreover, I think its competitor is better.

  (599) posted on 12.29.2011

Seriously, those lines don’t suit to the car! Please Mustang leave that thing to Camaro! And please just kill this model and make a new model for us Ford because I’m so sick of looking at this crap.

  (427) posted on 12.27.2011

Mustang Shelby is so awesome on its simplicity! It’s a good thing as well that it has a very efficient and impressive engine specs. Well, it is really exciting and fun to drive with on that engine specs.

  (1211) posted on 12.26.2011

It’s a very simple sports car, and yet it still implies the impression of being an aggressive car.. It’s horsepower is not bad for a sports car, but maybe a little upgrade would do better.. I love the simplicity of its design..

  (647) posted on 12.23.2011

It looks so cool on its graphics! I also have to agree that it already looks great on its body paint. Moreover, it’s a good thing that it has a very powerful and efficient engine output.
