Developed on a completely redesigned platform with fully independent front and rear suspension systems, the 2015 Mustang marks the beginning of a new era for the iconic pony. Ford says the sixth-gen Mustang->ke428 will be the most agile of the breed, and we have every reason to believe it, given the enormous amount of technology packed under the shell. But it seems there's even more where that came from, as the Blue Oval is also offering a Performance Pack for the muscle car->ke507.

Available on the EcoBoost-powered Mustang and the range-topping GT model, the Performance Pack adds numerous drivetrain improvements to the pony and promises to improve its performance on the race track. And by "performance" we mean better handling, grip and faster lap times.

How fast? Well, Ford says the 2015 Mustang GT with the Performance Package is quicker than the 2013 Mustang Boss 302. That's major news considering the Boss 302's lightness and race-inspired underpinnings. The sixth-gen pony might be controversial as far as styling goes, but it's shaping up to be a spectacular vehicle in the performance department.

2015 Ford Mustang Performance Package in detail

Five comprehensive updates are available with the bundle for both the EcoBoost and the Mustang GT, starting with a retuned suspension that comes with revised and stiffer springs, new bushings and monotube rear dampers. A thicker rear sway bar replaces the standard piece, while a K-brace joins in to connect the strut towers to the bulkhead. In the electronics department, the stability control, anti-lock braking system, and the power-assisted steering benefit from unique tuning for better response under aggressive driving conditions. An upgraded cooling system (read larger radiator) is also offered for enhanced track-day durability, while a gauge pack adds oil pressure and boost monitoring (EcoBoost only).

The upgrades don't stop here. Besides the aforementioned items that come with both trim levels, there are a number of additional features specifically developed for each model.

For the Mustang EcoBoost, the bundle also includes a 3.55:1 final drive ratio, unique 19-inch alloy wheels painted Ebony Black and wrapped in high-performance Pirelli tires, and revised brakes on all for corners. Up front, the pack adds four-piston, fixed aluminum calipers with 13.8-inch rotors, while the rear gets single-piston, floating iron calipers with 13-inch rotors.

Moving over to the Mustang GT, Ford is offering a 3.73:1 final drive ratio with Torsen differential, a strut tower brace and the same 19-inch Ebony Black wheels, but with wider rear tires. The brake upgrade remains the same on the rear, but the front wheels get larger, 15-inch rotors with Brembo, six-piston calipers. Unlike the EcoBoost, the Mustang GT also gets a unique front splitter to help channel cooling air to the front brakes.

The EcoBoost Performance Pack retails for $1,995, while the GT Performance Pack can be had for $2,495. A cool price to pay if you're looking for some quality weekend time on the track.

2015 Ford Mustang

Completely redesigned for the 2015 model year, the sixth-generation Mustang arrives in showrooms with a brand new exterior, a revamped cabin, and numerous technological updates inside and out. Three engines are available, with output ranging between 300 horsepower and 435 ponies. The entry-level 'Stang retains its proven 3.7-liter V-6 unit, which loses five horses for the sixth-generation, being rated at 300 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque.

The mid-range Mustang is motivated by a brand-new engine and marks the return of the turbo inline-four for the first time since the third-gen Mustang. Displacing 2.3 liters and featuring EcoBoost technology, the four-banger delivers 310 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of twist. At the top of the lineup sits the familiar 5.0-liter V-8. Generating 435 ponies and 400 pound-feet of torque in its updated form, the mighty Coyote adds an extra 15 horsepower and 10 pound-feet to last year's rating.

Pricing for the 2015 Mustang begins from $23,600 for the V6 model and from $25,170 for the EcoBoost, while the GT model fetches at least $32,100.
