The sixth-generation Ford Mustang arrived in late 2013 for the 2015 model year as the company’s most advanced pony car yet. Not only redesigned inside and out, the new Mustang also gained an independent rear suspension, a first for the muscle car since its inception in 1964. The new generation also marks the return of the four-cylinder engine, with Ford having added a turbocharged, 2.3-liter EcoBoost to the usual V-6 and V-8 engine lineup. On top of that, FoMoCo finally turned the Mustang into a global car, sending it to dealerships in places like Europe, Asia, Africa, and Oceania.

As expected, the sixth-generation Mustang has been received with great enthusiasm in Europe, where it is being offered with all engine options sans the V-6. For 2017, Ford decided to spice things up for European customers and created two special-edition models, one of which is called the Black Shadow. As the name suggests, the limited-edition model is about blacked-out exterior elements, but the package also adds extra features inside the cabin, as well as contrasting body stripes.

“Special edition Ford Mustangs have been an important part of the Mustang story for more than 50 years, and now customers in Europe can play their own part in the iconic car’s rich special edition history," said Roelant de Waard, vice president of Ford of Europe.

This is great news for European customers and the move should open the door for other special-edition Mustangs with even more unique features in the future. Meanwhile, let's have a closer look at the Black Shadow Edition.

What makes the Ford Mustang Black Shadow Edition special

Unlike the Blue Edition, the Black Shadow Mustang can be had in more than just one color and comes with a handful of unique exterior features. Color options for this model include Platinum White, Triple Yellow, Race Red, and Grabber Blue, each highlighted by black "dissolve-effect" stripes along the hood bulge and across the body-sides right above the skirts. The package also includes a number of black emblems, such as the stallion figure on the front grille and the "5.0" badges on the front fenders. Rounding off the exterior are a set of exclusive 19-inch Y-spoke alloy wheels finished in black.

The interior also received its fair share of attention and comes with extra standard features. Ford added heated and cooled front seats, parking sensors, a premium ShakerPro audio system with 12-speakers, and a powerful eight-inch subwoofer in the trunk. The Black Shadow Edition is also equipped with premium black leather upholstery with prominent instrument panel stitching and matching door inserts. The coupe also comes with SYNC 3 entertainment and navigation, as well as the app that enables drivers to locate nearby coffee shops, petrol stations or car parks, as well as find train stations, airports, and hotels.

Drivetrain-wise, the Black Shadow Edition is restricted to the 5.0-liter V-8 engine, meaning you'll have to look elsewhere if you want a 2.3-liter EcoBoost. Available with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission, the V-8 packs 421 PS. This converts to 415 horsepower, which is a 20-horsepower decrease compared to the U.S. model, ultimately caused by Europe's different emissions regulations.

The Black Shadow Edition will go on sale starting January 2017 for a yet unspecified price, but expect it to cost a tad more than the standard GT model. For reference, the Mustang GT retails from €43,000 in Germany and from £35,745 in the United Kingdom.
