We had just stopped drooling over SpeedKore’s Hellraiser when Classic Recreations came in smashing through the door with the carbon fiber-bodied 1967 Shelby GT500CR Mustang.

The build was announced in September 2020 as an extremely limited run of just 25 units and we are glad to report that it is finally here. With a little help from SpeedKore, that is.

Exterior

The carbon fiber body shell which replaces the steel one wore by the regular GT500CR was built by SpeedKore. Essentially, SpeedKore bluelight-scanned a steel-bodied GT500CR – a process it used for every one of its builds – then cured the carbon fiber panels in its own autoclave. The result is not just breathtaking – it also sheds 600 pounds (272 kilos) off the muscle car’s hips compared to a GT500CR with steel body panels.

18-inch Forgeline three-piece wheels wrapped in BFGoodrich Rival S tires complete the package, along with candy red stripes. Those, however, can be colored in any other way the customer wants.

Powertrain and drivetrain

Under the hood sits a 5.2-liter Ford V-8 imbued with a 2.9-liter Whipple supercharger. The unit connects to a 10-speed automatic transmission which redirects its 810 horsepower and 600 pound-feet (813 Newton-meters) of torque to the rear axle.

While the GT500CR looks classic on the outside, its underpinnings are nothing short of modern. For example, the suspension is of the adjustable variety from Detroit Speed, the shocks are JRI Coilovers, stopping power comes from a set of Wilwood brakes with slotted, cross-drilled, and vented rotors, while the rear suspension is a QuadraLink kit also sourced from Detroit Speed.
