Ever since the first generation Mustang arrived back in 1965, the special California Edition was part of the lineup. And it is back for the 2022 model year, but with a few differences when compared to previous years.

For the first time is will be available with the GT Performance Package and will offer a new signature appearance to commemorate the 1968 California. Customers can place their orders for the California later in 2021, with the first deliveries scheduled for the first quarter of 2022.

What's special about the 2022 Ford Mustang GT California Special?

The 2022 Mustang California Edition is based on the Mustang GT Premium fastback and convertible models, and for the first time, it features the GT Performance Package. As its name suggests, this package is all about improving the car's handling and driving dynamics.

It includes:

- Brembo six-piston front brake calipers

- unique chassis tuning with heavy-duty front springs

- larger tubular rear sway bar

- overall lower ride height

- K-brace

- strut tower brace

- front subframe V-brace

- TORSEN® limited-slip differential

- unique stability control

- electric power steering tuning

- 19x9-inch front and 19x9.5-inch rear wheels with Pirelli summer tires

The "GT/CS" side stripe runs from the front fender to the signature rear fender scoop.

And, if you need more elements to further identify this special edition, a California Special badge in Ebony Black and Race Red adorns the trunk lid, and an additional "GT/CS" badge can be spotted on the honeycomb grille. All models will also be offered with a larger front splitter as part of the GT Performance Package.

The fastback version will get a performance rear wing from the GT Performance Package, while the convertible comes with no spoiler. The 2022 California rides on unique five-spoke 19-inch painted machined wheels.

For the interior, the California package will feature suede-trimmed seats with the embossed “GT/CS” logo and red contrast stitching, black Miko® suede-trimmed door inserts, and custom embroidered “GT/CS” floor mats. The instrument panel is finished in carbon hex aluminum and will feature a signature California Special script badge on the passenger side.

There will be a choice of nine exterior colors, including:

- Atlas Blue

- Carbonized Gray

- Cyber Orange

- Dark Matter

- Grabber Blue Metallic

- Iconic Silver

- Rapid Red

- Shadow Black

- Oxford White

Under the hood the 2022 California will get a 5.0-liter V-8 engine that delivers a total of 460 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. Top speed is 155 mph.
