That’s the predicament our mates now face. On the one hand, the possibility of owning a Shelby GT500 has never been this close to reality, at least if a new law passes allowing variants of the Mustang not sold in Australia to be imported and sold locally. On the other hand, these converted-for-Australia GT500 models could set would-be owners back as much as AUD300,000 to AUD400,000. That converts to around $202,000 to $270,000 based on current exchange rates.
Depending on what the price ends up being, our friends in Australia would have to pay at least three times as much as U.S. customers for a chance to own and drive the fastest Mustang ever built. Is the thrill of owning a Shelby GT500 worth the price — literally — of a Lamborghini Huracan? That’s a question only those who are really interested in a converted Mustang Shelby GT500 can answer.
2020 Ford Mustang R-Spec
Once you see it, you can’t quite unsee it and for all the good reasons. This is the Ford Mustang R-Spec, a GT-based limited-edition variant built in RHD only for the Australian market that features a plethora of Ford Performance parts, a Roush supercharger, and an active exhaust. That makes it the first supercharged Mustang to be sold through Ford dealers. With all the goodies that have been crammed in the R-Spec, power goes all the way up to 700 horsepower and 610 pound-feet of torque or about 170 horsepower and 180 torques over the Mustang Shelby GT350. At $67,500 in Oz, this could just be a great bang for the buck if you can get your hands on one of the 500 examples that will be made.
It’s been five years since Australian Blue Oval fans have been mourning the loss of Ford Performance Vehicles (FPV), Ford Australia’s division that used to turn around the really quick Fords at the antipodes. While nothing can replace a Falcon with all of FPV’s go-fast features added to it, the R-Spec Mustang is a nice addition to the sports car’s lineup in Australia where, until now, all you had to choose from when it came to ’special’ Mustangs was the Bullitt - and only 700 of those have been made for the 2019 MY (the R-Spec is part of the 2020 MY Mustang lineup).
The Ford Falcon has been in production since 1960, and since 1972, it’s been entirely a product of Australia — designed, developed, and produced entirely separate from the U.S. It holds the position of Australia’s best-selling car, and sells with a variety of engines and trim levels. Over the last seven generations, more than 3 million of them have been sold. That’s a lot of Falcons. They even produce a Ranchero-like ute version that takes the awesomeness to a whole new level. Heading into 2015, Ford is releasing a new performance version of the Falcon, dubbed the FPV GT F.
Sometimes, I swear Ford is just trying to make its customers in the United States jealous of its customers in Australia. Sure, they gave the U.S. a much more capable Focus than was previously available, the tiny-but-flickable Fiesta, and a number of quite enjoyable ST models, but even so, it seems like the Australians have all the fun.
Even as the Fusion and Taurus improve leaps and bounds over their predecessors, neither sedan is offered with a V-8, and neither is rear-wheel drive. The Australian Ford Falcon, however, comes with both rear-wheel-drive and an optional V-8, which makes it much more desirable than the Fusion or even the Taurus in the United States. If you want tail-out fun from an American sedan, then the Ford Falcon is one of those cars that you know you love, but you know you can’t have.
To make things worse, Ford has just introduced the Falcon-based 2015 FPV GT F, a 5.0-liter, V-8 monster of a sedan that makes more horsepower than a Mustang GT and still manages to have the capacity to drive your friends down to the neighborhood pub.
If you were jealous of the Ford Falcon before, the 2015 FPV GT F will leave you even more jealous than before.

Undisciplined drivers on the Australian roads now have a new reason to think twice before putting the pedal to the metal, as the highway patrol has just added a new Ford Falcon GT to its fleet. With 536 horsepower under the hood (up from the car’s standard 449 ponies), this is the most powerful police car to ever patrol Australian roads. These extra ponies are thanks, in part, to a bigger exhaust system and high-flow fuel injectors.
The car has been specially developed to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the NSW Police. It comes equipped with the latest radar unit, number-plate-reading technology and a suite of on-board computers that will make catching the bad guys really easy. In all, the Falcon GT police cruiser cost in excess of $100,000 and there is no mention of whether it will see actual police use, or just be a show car. We assume it will be relegated to the latter.
’’It’s a conversation starter,’’ says Inspector John Lipman, the commander of the traffic technology section. ’’It’s about interacting with car enthusiasts and having a similar vehicle to what they would have or what they might aspire to.’’
Australia’s very own Ford supercar, the mighty Falcon V8, has been getting quite the run in the spotlight lately and turns out, there’s another version ready to take some names.
This new version is the Ford Performance Racing Falcon V8, which is set to compete in the V8 Supercars series in Australia. It has been dressed in the team’s Ecoboost motorsport livery and will be driven by both Mark Winterbottom and Will Davidson for the 2013 season.
While the car is still heavy in the testing and development phase, the team is already looking into making all the necessary adjustments leading up to its racing debut next season.
“While there is still a lot of work to be done to understand the new car ahead of next season, our ability to have the car on track running what we hope will be the final specification of many parts will give us the best chance of starting 2013 at the head of the field." said FPR Team Principal Tim Edwards.
Expect to see and hear more about the Ford Performance Racing Falcon V8 when the 2013 season of the V8 Supercars series in Australia draws near.
Far from the land we call America where the Ford Mustang travels its fair roads, Australia has its own muscle car version, called the Falcon.
So while we get inundated with all the Mustang variants left and right, the Aussies now have something to brag about with the unveiling of the GT RSPEC Limited Edition Series, or as they describe it, the fastest Falcon ever made.
Certainly, we’d love to see what the Falcon is capable of when lined up against a Mustang, but that’s a discussion and a debate for another day. What needs to be done now is to pay respect to this special edition muscle car that boasts of some pretty cool features that would make even the iconic Mustang proud.
Understandably so, Ford Performance Vehicles director Bryan Mears has nothing but gushing words for his company’s latest project. "On the track the RSPEC’s capabilities are just awesome, he said, "it is the finest-handling GT in history."
"We have put 18 months into the development of the FPV GT RSPEC and we are extremely proud of the results; anyone who drives it on the track will be blown away by just how complete and capable this car is."

As the global recession rolls around the Earth, automakers everywhere are starting to hit their breaking points. There have already been talks of Ford and Chevy pulling out of Europe and recently, Ford announced that it was cutting 15 percent of job in Australia due to poor sales.
On the heels of that announcement comes a report from International Business Times that claims Ford is simply ramping up to end its Australia-based manufacturing altogether. The consensus is that Ford of Australia will cease production in the Outback by 2016.
Now, the Ford pull-out from Australia, much like the potential pull-out from Europe, does not mean there won’t be any Fords sold there. This simply means that the Australia-built fords, like the Territory and the fairly bad-ass Falcon sedan, will no longer exist. In their place will likely be imported Fusions and Explorers, maybe bearing different names.
Slow sales are not the only cause to Australia’s No. 3 automaker pulling out, the enactment of tough-to-meet Euro 5 emission standards are likely the straw that broke Ford’s back. Both the Falcon and Territory cannot meet these stringent regulations without expensive revisions to the driveline.
Ford has yet to make any announcement regarding its Outback exit, but it looks to be a certainty. We’ll update you if Ford finally announces this exit.
Australia has become a unique market for American automaker Ford and it’s no more evident than in the growing popularity of the Falcon GT (the Mustang representative in the Land Down Under).
Now it appears that Ford has a surprise for its Australian customers because the fastest Ford Falcon GT ever created is set to debut at the upcoming Australian International Motor Show in October.
No technical details have been officially announced, but it’s expected that the car, which has been codenamed as "Panther," will carry a 5.0-liter supercharged V8 engine that produces an impressive 449 horsepower at 5,750 rpm and 420 lb/ft of torque at 2,200 rpm. This allows the car to hit 0-62 mph in just five seconds with a top speed of 155 mph.
The Falcon GT Panther is also looking at carrying a set of 19" wheels to go with tuning work done on the suspension to make it sportier, as well as stability control systems, and an upgraded transmission to improve its overall handling.
Expect more details of the Ford Falcon GT "Panther" when it makes its debut at the Australian International Motor Show in October 2012.

Since its inception midway through the 1964 model year, the “original” pony car, the Ford Mustang, has remained an America-only model. The last Ford overseas we recall seeing was the four-cylinder 1967 ‘Stang from Tokyo Drift, and we almost cried at the sight of that monstrosity of ricer meets muscle. There are now rumors floating around – mostly sparked by our friends at Popular Hot Rodding – that the Mustang is heading overseas.
We are all well aware of the fact that the Mustang is being redesigned for the 2015 model year. Apparently, a part of the releasing of the Mustang in Europe is that this redesign is turning the beloved Mustang into a car that meets the European Union pedestrian safety regulations. According to Popular Hot Rodding, this means that a redesign rivaling the Mustang II may be afoot, which is being dubbed the “Mustang III.”
This is a scary moment for Ford and it really needs to tread carefully, as the Mustang II nearly killed off the Mustang name altogether. It was to a point that the Ford Probe – yeah, remember that thing – was slated to be the replacement for the Mustang. Fortunately, the Mustang pulled through and is now thriving as a muscle car again.
This Euro-inspired redesign comes on the heels of the U.S. government possibly raising the average fuel economy requirements to an astronomical 56.2 mpg by 2025. This doesn’t mean that the Mustang needs to hit 56 mpg, but that the average of all Ford vehicles sold must be at least 56.2 mpg by 2025. This also puts the V-8 Mustangs that Ford has worked so hard on lately on the chopping block during this redesign.
Could this mean the return of a turbocharged four-cylinder to the Mustang lineup, or maybe even a transplantation of the EcoBoost 3.5-liter V-6 engine from the Taurus to the Mustang? It very well could, and that could spell disaster for the Mustang. Ford definitely needs to tread carefully with this redesign, or we could end up with the Mustang II all over again.
The Stig is an intimidating character that even the most professional of racers can’t help but be in awe of. At least that’s what the Stig likes to think of himself. We can’t blame him for the lack of oxygen in his head. Lord knows how long it’s been since he last took that helmet off, but whatever you think of him, the dude is a polarizing figure that needs someone of equal stature to put him in check.

The world-class rally driver recently teamed up with Top Gear’s resident test driver for a promotional gig for Top Gear Australia magazine. The two are scheduled to be in the cover of the November issue of the magazine and you can expect that article to be a must-read.
Before that issue hits newsstands, though, Top Gear Australia bought a camera crew to a race track to film the two drifter extraordinaires participate in a one-on-one Hoonigan show in Melbourne, featuring Block’s Monster Rally Fiesta and the Stig’s ride-of-choice, the Australian-born Ford Falcon FPV.

This is what happens when a concept car receives great praise; a production version, albeit a limited edition, soon follows. Last month, Ford Performance Vehicles introduced the FPV Concept at the Australian International Motor Show to tremendous praise. The fallout has resulted in a limited edition version of the car, called the GT Black.
Similar to the FPV Concept, the GT Black kept the all-black finish that made it so popular. It’s dressed in a Silhouette Black paint finish complemented by matte black stripe decals on the entire car, including the bonnet, front and rear bumpers, rear diffuser, rear wing, and even the upper and lower grilles. Heck, even the fog lamp bezels have been finished in black! Rounding out the exterior feature are a set of 19" five-spoke alloy wheels finished in - you guessed it! - gloss black.
Inside the car, there’s plenty more of that all-black treatment. The seats are dressed in black leather. The Interior Command Center comes in black and the gear shift badge found on manual transmission models also comes in a unique black finish. Suffice to say, the FPV GT Black Limited Edition does its name justice, wouldn’t you say?
Then there’s the engine, which we assure you doesn’t come in black. What it does come in is a 5.0-liter Miami supercharged V8 engine with an output of 455 horsepower at 5,750 rpm and 420 lb/ft of torque from 2,200-5,500 rpm.
The Boss GT-based muscle car will only be limited to 125 units with each model coming with a unique build badge and certificate of authenticity, making it a true special edition muscle car that should attract its fair share of attention.
After being announced back in March, two Ford Mad Max Interceptor concepts made their world debut at the Australian International Motor Show in Melbourne. The two concepts were designed by Ford Australia in cooperation with Top Gear Australia in order to celebrate the revival of the Mad Max action movie genre.
"We’re delighted that both our readers and the social web community have warmed to the car," TopGear Australia Editor, Stephen Corby, said. "The level of interest has really taken us by surprise, particularly with on-line media."
The company presented two 40% size clay models weighing in at around 130 kg (286 lbs) and dressed to the nines with all of the detailing and trim highlights. The two concepts were designed by Nima Nourian and Simon Brook and use industrial-strength weaponry like "tasers" mounted in the front of the cars to zap bad guys on bikes straight off the road. Other futuristic movie features include a titanium-lined body shell to interrupt police scanners and wheels with extendable spikes to shred enemy vehicles.
"It has given our team a lot of scope to really extend their imaginations The team has been able to get quite creative because the Mad Max car is not constrained by the normal design parameters imposed by a real-world vehicle."
A lot of us were too young to remember this movie, but for those that had a chance to see George Miller’s Mad Max movie, you might have caught sight of Mel Gibson driving around in a Ford Falcon XB GT351 Interceptor. Thirty-two years after both Gibson and the Interceptor became Hollywood royalty - well we’re going to use the term royalty loosely with Gibson considering his latest personal antics -, an Australian group headed by Ford and Top Gear Australia magazine is in the process of developing two new concept studies of the Interceptor, or as we should say, a present-day take on Mad Max’s bad-ass ride.
Ford Australia formed a group of designers headlined by Todd Willing, the company’s chief of design for Asia, Pacific, and African passenger cars. Led by Willing, the team conceptualized and designed a number of design studies using the original Interceptor as the basis for their creations. In the end, the two best studies – designed by Nima Nourian and Simon Brook – were chosen for the next stage in the decision-making process.
The two designs will then be featured on a future issue of Top Gear Australia where readers will get the opportunity to vote on their preferred design, which would then be turned into a full-fledged scale model that’s scheduled to be revealed later this year.
Is this a case of nostalgia or a marketing ploy to drum up interest on what appears to be the fourth chapter of the Mad Max franchise, tentatively titled “Fury Road”? We can’t say for sure that both items are connected to each other, but it is a little coincidental, to say the least.
Ford’s Australian division has released a teaser illustration of its new-look 2011 Territory crossover that’s based on the underpinnings of the country’s local Falcon sedan.
The Blue Oval has said that the Territory crossover will come with an overhauled design for the exterior and interior, as well as a new diesel engine.
Word has it that the new Territory will be fitted with the Land Rover Discovery’s 2.7-liter turbo-diesel V6 engine that produces 140kW of power and 445Nm of torque. That much power translates to a combined cycle fuel consumption of 10.2 liters/100km and a north to 100km/h time of 12.7 seconds. Joining the Territory’s new turbo-diesel engine could be another powertrain variant in the form of a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder EcoBoost engine, giving the Australian market a number of options as to what range of the Territory they can get.
Bob Graziano, Ford Australia’s president and CEO, is confident that the new Ford Territory will continue to be a hot seller in the Land Down Under. “This is an exceptional SUV,” he said. “It wears an exciting new look and will boast an extensive list of technical highlights. The Ford Australia team is taking the Territory to an all-new level of performance, refinement and quality, and customers will definitely experience these advancements when they drive it."
The unveiling of the 2011 Territory is still yet to be revealed, although we wouldn’t be surprised if it happens in the middle of next year at the Australian International Motor Show.
All other details, including specifications and pricing, will be revealed in the next few months.
