The Genesis GV80 has finally been revealed and it’s better than expected!

The 2021 Genesis GV80 is a midsize SUV from Hyundai’s premium vehicle division. The company’s first crossover, it joins a lineup made of three sedans, so it’s also the company’s largest vehicle yet. Unveiled in South Korea, Genesis’ home market, in January 2020, the GV80 will come to the U.S. later in 2020. Although U.S. engine specs are still a mystery, the SUV will probably travel across the pond with two gasoline units. The GV80 is fitted with an impressive technology package and features the largest infotainment display in its class. More on that in the comprehensive review below.

Well, it’s about time this thing showed up, but we won’t see it for quite some time

After four years on the market, Genesis has finally launched the GV80 – the brand’s first SUV and the model that pushes it into all-new, more competitive territory. The GV80 will be available as a two- or three-row SUV with a fairly luxurious interior that mimics the original GV80 concept quite well. Unfortunately, the massive display screen from the concept doesn’t carry over, but the infotainment display is rather wide for what it is. It’s a good thing too, as it’s not that tall and screen real estate isn’t exactly plentiful here. The two-spoke steering wheels is rather unique, however, the design of the center console feels like a major misstep as it would have been an ideal place (with the right angle) for a massive, Tesla-like display.

For now, the GV80 is only available in South Korea, and it’s only available with a 3.0-liter turbodiesel that’s good for 278 horsepower and 434 pound-feet of torque. It goes on sale later in January 2019, though, so this egg is ready to hatch. Shortly after the official on-sale date, Genesis will introduce a 2.5-liter, turbocharged, four-cylinder that’s good for 304 horsepower and a 3.5-liter six-cylinder that pumps out a cool 380 horsepower. According to Genesis, the 3.5-liter is good enough for a 5.7-second sprint to 60 mph.

There’s no specific date as to when the GV80 will circulate to the rest of the world, but there’s a good chance that we’ll start seeing it arrive in Europe and the United States by the end of 2020 or early 2021 as Genesis can’t drop the ball on this and needs a home run if its first-ever SUV is going to take off. Once the GV80 is released in full-scale, expect the GV70 and GV90 flagship to start getting some serious attention.

Watch the Genesis GV80 Debut Right Here!

It’s been a long time coming, but the GV80 is about to arrive

We’re finally in the final hours before the Genesis GV80, the brand’s very first SUV, makes its global debut. It’s been a long time coming, including a letdown in December 2019 when everyone expected it to shine so bright, but this time it’s the real deal, and there’s even a live stream ready to go – set to go live at 8:30 PM EST. We’ve embedded that stream below for you to watch right here on topspeed.com, but to help keep you comfortable during your wait, let’s talk a little more about it.

Genesis as a brand was launched just a little over four years ago, as a spin-off of the Hyundai brand and quickly became the Korean automaker’s luxury arm. Similar in a way to what Lincoln is to Ford and Cadillac is to Chevy, Genesis aims to provide the best luxury possible while still not going north of the too-expensive border. The brand effectively competes against brands like Audi, BMW, and even Mercedes to some extent.

This far, however, Genesis has only taken a hold on the luxury sedan market with models like the G70, G80, and G90. So, the GV80 represents the brand’s first step into the SUV segment, but it won’t be the last. Once the GV80 launches, a GV70 and a flagship GV90 are both set to come to market within the years that follow.

As for the GV80, Genesis has launched a few teaser images that basically showed off the car, and we’ve seen numerous spy shots. It won’t look quite like the GV80 concept as it will be boxier and a little less futuristic, but it’s set to wow the crowd and anyone lucky enough to get their hands on one. The interior will feature high-end materials comparable to that of the German competition while the powertrain offerings will range from V-6 to V-8 engines with as much as 420 horsepower. AWD will be a given, of course, and a hybrid drivetrain will likely be introduced sometime in the near future – probably before the GV70 or flagship GV90 launch.

Below the embeded live stream below, we’ve listed various bits of information for the soon-to-launch GV80, so be sure to check out everything we know so far while you wait!

2020 Genesis SUV And 2020 Hyundai Sonata Coming In the Next 12 Months

Glorious 2019 Year For Hyundai-Kia and Genesis

Hyundai and Genesis are in for a rather amazing year. Both brands will reveal as many as 13 different new models - some facelifted, some new. As per my understanding, the biggest news is the imminent arrival of a new premium SUV with a Genesis badge. Judging by the stunning new Hyundai Santa Fe SUV (that isn’t premium), I expect nothing less than extraordinary and stunning from the upcoming Genesis SUV. The second big debut for 2019 is the coming of the new Hyundai Sonata. We’re looking forward to that one too.

Genesis Wants a Piece of The SUV Pie and the First Model Could Arrive by 2020

The automaker’s entry into the SUV market was a question of "when," not "if"

The Genesis brand has finally confirmed its plans to enter the crossover and SUV market, beginning with its first SUV offering, the GV80. Named directly after the concept version that the company unveiled last year, the GV80 will usher in a lineup of crossovers exclusively developed and sold under Hyundai’s premium brand. In addition to the GV80, a smaller crossover, called the GV70, will also arrive at a later date.
