Genesis Could Soon Dip Its Toes Into The Performance Pool
Hyundai’s luxury brand – Genesis – is not slowing down. In addition to the SUV models that recently went on sale, the brand is also about to debut their new executive sedan – the G90. With what is shaping to be an almost full Genesis lineup, the only type of car that is yet to make an appearance is a sports coupe. However, there are indications that this might change very soon, as Genesis is giving us subtle hints and the writing is starting to appear on the wall.
2019 Genesis G70 - Driven
We know and you know that if you want a compact luxury sedan without thinking twice you’ll check in at your local Audi, BMW or Mercedes-Benz dealer and ask for an offer on one of the Famous Three. But we reckon there are better options out there, cars that’ll cost you less and offer more than you could ask for at that price point while also not disappoint you in terms of performance, comfort, quality, and maintenance. Such a car is the Genesis G70, the 2019 North American Car Of The Year. We drove one powered by the 3.3-liter turbocharged engine and we think you shouldn’t jump straight to a Merc C43 or BMW M340i before taking a good close look at the G70.
The compact luxury sedan market is packed at the moment, as it always has been. The German stranglehold on the segment may seem like an unbreakable status quo and it’s not for lack of trying from the likes of Infiniti, Acura or Lexus. More recently, the Koreans also want a piece of the action and there’s some promise in what they offer: Kia’s coming forth with the Stinger that has impressed us in its top-of-the-line specification while Genesis, Hyundai’s luxury brand, launched the G70 in 2017 as its third model and a direct rival to the 3 Series, C Class, and A4. It was penned by the same guy who came up with the Stinger’s aggressive lines but the G70 is a much more traditional-looking sedan. Still, it’s not a car you would be blamed for turning around to get another look at and it’s got more tricks up its sleeve under the skin. Overall, it may not be a complete match for the offering from Stuttgart, Munich, and Ingolstadt but we think this is a car that’s perfect for the conscious buyer who’s stepping up to a luxury compact sedan.
Watch Out World - the 2018 Genesis Essentia Concept Will Head Intro Production
Genesis is pushing forward with plans to launch a production version of the Genesis Essentia Concept. The revelation was made by Genesis North America Executive Director Erwin Raphael, who told Motor Trend that the automaker has every intention to build the sports car as a special edition model. There’s no timetable on when the production model will arrive, but Genesis Global Brand Chief Manfred Fitzgerald hinted that it could be in production by 2021 or 2022.
2020 Genesis Sports Car
Less than three years old as of 2018, Genesis Motors is already making headlines. Split from the Hyundai Genesis nameplate, the Korean luxury division already offers three sedans, and it’s working on a couple of SUVs too. More recently though, we got confirmation that Genesis also wants to build a sports car. The two-door coupe could be based on the Essentia concept car.
Word of Genesis’ plans to develop a sports car got out in January 2018, when Hyundai design vice president Luc Donkerwolke told Wheels Magazine that "we are definitely doing it. We are not going autonomous for all of our cars." In addition, the brand’s head of R&D, Woong-chul Yang, confirmed that Genesis wants a sports car and that its development will be handled by Hyundai’s N performance division. Not much is known about it at this point, but we created a rendering of the car, and we will discuss what we already know about this project in the speculative review below.

If Genesis Boss Has His Way, the Essentia Concept Will Make it to Production
When Genesis pulled the covers off of the Essentia Concept, it was received very well – so much so that it was covered to death by every outlet under the sun. Of course, the big problem was that it’s just too conceptual to ever go into production, or at least that’s what everyone thought. As it turns out, Genesis boss, Manfred Fitzgerald, is actually pushing for it and even admitted that its debut at the New York Auto Show is being used to “test the waters.”
