GMC reincarnates the Hummer moniker

GM announced the reincarnation of the Hummer moniker in early 2020 as an EV, to much surprise. It was supposed to debut in May last year, but the pandemic threw a spanner in the works and it had to be pushed by a few months. In October, the super truck was finally revealed with a whole lot of information.

The Hummer EV boasts of specs that can throw the competition out of the water, but it comes with a starting sticker price of $80,000, which makes it a super-premium offering. So, is this mouth-watering product with an eye-watering price tag the ultimate truck that you need in your garage?

GMC Shows off the Hummer EV’s Watts to Freedom Mode To Celebrate Independence Day

The WTF mode that can make a 9,000-pound vehicle sprint to 60 mph from a standstill will make you go WTF!

The Hummer models were known for their brawny appearance and gas-guzzling nature. But, GMC revived the moniker last year as a clean, sober vehicle that doesn’t have a drinking problem anymore. This stark opposite nature is still a little tough to digest, but we’re more than happy to have the Hummer badge live on. After introducing it as a supertruck in 2020, the company brought out its SUV version, too.

The nameplate aside, the 2022 Hummer EV is filled to the brim when it comes to features and technology. There’s the Crab Walk mode, Extract mode, and the Super Cruise tech to name a few. Another exciting feature is the Watts To Freedom (WTF) which is essentially a Launch Control.

To commemorate Independence Day, GMC has released a video of the Hummer supertruck’s Watts To Freedom mode in action. To see a 9,000-pound beast sprint to 60 mph from rest in three seconds is scary and exciting. A perfect name for this mode – WTF!

GMC Hummer EV: What Should You Be Getting - The SUV or Pickup Truck?

The SUV loses out on the power output, range and performance specs, but benefits from more cabin and cargo space, and better dimensions and angles

GMC introduced the Hummer EV supertruck last year and has now followed it up with the Hummer EV SUV. At the onset, it seems like a pickup truck that comes with a roof welded on the bed to make it an SUV. However, there is a lot more than meets the eye. Unlike the Rivian truck and SUV twins, the Hummer EV SUV has been placed as an inferior offering. There is a difference in specs, power outputs, and other things that makes it look like the second fiddle to the EV truck. The pricing, however, is on par for the standard models and there is a difference only in the Launch Edition model.

The GMC Hummer SUV Sacrifices Range And Power for Cargo Room

The company reduced 50 miles of range and 170 horses on the SUV version of the EV so that the cargo space isn’t compromised

Almost a year after GMC reincarnated the Hummer moniker in the form of an electric supertruck, the company has now come up with an SUV based on it. Both the products are priced the same except for the top trim, so one would naturally assume them to have identical specs and features.

While the off-road tech and most of the other things are shared, the SUV comes with lower power figures and range. It took people by surprise, but GMC has now clarified that the range and horsepower had to be sacrificed to offer decent cargo room.

Engineering Explained Cracks Through GM's Sketchy Hummer EV Torque Figure

Engineering Explained Cracks Through GM’s Sketchy Hummer EV Torque Figure

11,500 pound-feet is the wheel torque; the motor torque is less than 10-percent of that figure

GMC revealed the Hummer EV and let out a few details about the supertruck. In all honestly, it is quite impressive on paper, although it doesn’t offer the same value proposition as, say, the upcoming Cybertruck. This is on paper comparison given that we’ve seen none of these trucks in flesh. GMC announced that the Hummer EV, in the top trim, will make 1,000 horses and 11,500 pound-feet of torque. The torque took a lot of people by shock because it seems unrealistic. If you thought the same, well, you’re kinda right, because there is a catch to this figure.

The automaker announced the torque at wheels instead of the torque at motors, and the latter is way less. Jason Fenske from Engineering Explained broke down the math and concluded that the motor torque is around 1,000 pound-feet of torque. That’s quite a bit less in comparison, but it is not a minuscule number by any means and is on par with other gas- and diesel-powered heavy trucks on the market.

Quick Comparison: GMC Hummer EV vs Tesla Cybertruck

Will the GMC Hummer EV give the Tesla Cybertruck a run for its money?

Discontinued in 2010 after 18 years of the market, the Hummer nameplate returned in 2020. But this time around, it’s not a standalone brand, but a model sold under a GMC badge. The even bigger news is that it’s fully electric. Set to go into production in 2021, the truck version will go against the spectacular Tesla Cybertruck. But does it have what it takes to compete with Elon Musk’s oddly-shaped hauler? GM Really Missed the Mark With the GMC Hummer EV

GM Really Missed the Mark With the GMC Hummer EV

I Wouldn’t Go So Far As to Say I Hate the Hummer EV, But It’s Not What GM Needed

Now that the GMC Hummer EV is here, I have to admit that it is, at the very least, somewhat worthy of the hype that led up to its debut. It is instantly recognizable as a Hummer and even has the upright windshield. It also seems to be very capable on-road and off. The performance specs, although advertised in a somewhat sketchy manner (more on this later) do position the Hummer EV in a place to really compete. But the there are a few things about the Hummer EV that rub me the wrong way, including the price, the wait for something somewhat affordable, and why I’m pretty sure the Hummer EV probably won’t deliver the sales performance that GM is expecting. Let me explain…

The 2022 GMC Hummer Is Billed As a SuperTruck, But Is It Really?

The 2022 GMC Hummer Is Billed As a SuperTruck, But Is It Really?

The reincarnated moniker returns as a supertruck with a ton of drool-worthy goodies, super-high price tag

GM dropped a major bomb earlier this year when it announced the return of the buried moniker, the Hummer. However, what surprised folks even more was that Hummer, known to be a gas guzzler, was now being presented as a sober vehicle that doesn’t drink anymore. But, despite this opposite-end-of-the-spectrum reincarnation, what didn’t change was its monstrous size and the attention-grabbing persona.

The automaker unveiled a few teasers during the Superbowl earlier this year and had plans to reveal the supertruck sometime in May. But, courtesy of the pandemic, the plans went haywire. Now, the company has finally taken the wraps off this beast and given us a few details. So, is the GMC Hummer EV worth the hype?

2022 GMC Hummer EV - Highlights and Photo Gallery

The long-awaited GMC Hummer EV has finally made it’s debut, and it comes to the party with a lot of noteworthy features and some pretty impressive performance. According to GMC, the new Hummer EV will be power by (and as expected) GM’s new Ultium batteries and the new Ultium Drive electronic motors. The Hummer will feature a total of three electric motors that, according to GMC, will deliver and impressive 1,000 horsepower and a “GM-estimated 11,500 pound-feet of torque.” It all reality, it’ll probably put close to 900 pound-feet to the ground, but we’ll leave that discussion for another time. GMC has offered up some pricing and trim information with the entry-level model commanding $79,995, but it comes with just two electric motors. It’ll be coined the “EV2” and will launch in spring of 2024. It will be preceded by the EV2x in 2023 (the lowest model that can do the CrabWalk) and the Hummer EV3X, which will be available in Fall of 2020 with a $99,995 price tag.
