More bling for the mid-range SLT trim

GMC is no stranger to building premium, full-size SUVs. The Denali trim found on the Yukon and Yukon XL accounts for a large percentage of Yukon sales, making it an immensely popular option for well-off families, premium limousine services, and high-end corporate shuttles. Well, GMC is introducing a new premium option package for the Yukon. It’s called the Premium Edition and it’s only available on the mid-range SLT trim level.

The special option package adds things like premium wheels, a new front grille design, and of course, more chrome. The package only dresses up the exterior, leaving the interior with the same standard equipment and options found on the SLT trim. That’s doesn’t mean anyone will mistake this Yukon for a bare-bones model by any means.

“The new Yukon SLT Premium Edition adds distinction and personalized style to the already well-appointed Yukon SLT model,” said Stu Pierce, senior marketing manager, GMC Trucks & Full-size SUVs. “For discerning customers seeking uncompromising capability and unparalleled refinement in a full-size SUV, Yukon SLT Premium Edition delivers with the latest in technologies, amenities and a unique and premium style.”

The Yukon SLT Premium Edition comes standard with the 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V-8 that makes 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission does the shifting, while power is routed to either the rear wheels, or all four wheels when 4WD is optioned. And as any proper SUV should, the Yukon can tow a maximum of 8,500 pounds, while the Yukon XL’s tow rating drops only by 200 pounds.

GMC says the Premium Edition trim will become available at dealerships this summer.

What makes the GMC Yukon SLT Premium Edition special

Checking the Premium Edition option box adds trim-specific 22-inch wheels, a trim-specific chrome grille, chrome body-side moldings, and a polished exhaust tip. The new grille features seven horizontal chrome bars with the large, red GMC logo floating front and center. The wheels are 12-spoke, polished chrome with exposed lug nuts and a chrome center cap. The wheels come wrapped in Bridgestone all-season tires. Lastly, the chrome side moldings help protect against door dings, while adding more flash to the Yukon’s lower flanks.

Things don’t change much on the inside. The Yukon SLT Premium Edition still offers fold-flat second- and third-row seats, a power liftgate with foot-motion operation, wireless phone charging, keyless open and start, and the eight-inch IntelliLink infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. These are all items available on the “conventional” SLT as either standard equipment or as an optional extra.

Basically the SLT Premium Edition is for those who want more flash on their Yukon or Yukon XL, but can’t make the jump to the Denali trim. While that sounds harsh, GMC is simply giving its customer base more choices. Still, pricing is not yet known for the Premium Edition, but expect it to carry $5,000 to $7,000 price tag. That puts it below the $8,325 premium charged for the $66,520 Yukon Denali, yet covers the added features, which the Premium Edition makes standard.

Press Release

GMC today announced the 2016 Yukon SLT Premium Edition – a chrome-trimmed special model offering a premium, personalized appearance on SLT models.

It goes on sale this summer, offered on Yukon and Yukon XL models. Features include:

Unique design 22-inch chrome-wheels
Unique design chrome grille
Bright chrome body-side moldings
Polished exhaust tip

“The new Yukon SLT Premium Edition adds distinction and personalized style to the already well-appointed Yukon SLT model,” said Stu Pierce, senior marketing manager, GMC Trucks & Full-size SUVs. “For discerning customers seeking uncompromising capability and unparalleled refinement in a full-size SUV, Yukon SLT Premium Edition delivers with the latest in technologies, amenities and a unique and premium style.”

Yukon and Yukon XL SLT models are powered by an advanced 5.3L V-8 engine that offers the segment’s best V-8 fuel economy: an EPA-estimated 23 highway mpg (2WD models).

Additional standard and available features on SLT models include:

Fold-flat second- and third-row seats that enhance cargo capability and convenience, including an available power-folding feature
Power rear liftgate with multiple programmable height settings and hands-free operation
Wireless phone charging
Standard 8-inch-diagonal color touch-screen radio with enhanced IntelliLink and available navigation
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto phone projection compatibility
Keyless Open and Start
8,500-lb. max trailering for Yukon and 8,300-lb. max trailering for Yukon XL (2WD models)

The Yukon lineup also incorporates technologies that help protect the driver and passengers before, during and after a collision. They include a forward radar system and the segment’s only Front Center Air Bag (models with front bucket seats), which deploys from the inboard side of the driver’s seat and inflates between the driver and front passenger, providing added protection for both front occupants in side impacts.

Phone projection technology

Through Android Auto and Apple CarPlay capability, Yukon’s IntelliLink infotainment system provides simple and intuitive use of smartphones in the vehicle. It integrates certain phone functions onto the 8-inch-diagonal color touch screen, allowing you to call up music, navigation apps and more.

Using either application is simple. A “Projection” icon on the IntelliLink screen is visible when a phone is not connected and changes to indicate CarPlay or Android Auto when a compatible phone is connected through a USB. Android Auto requires a phone running the Android Lollipop 5.0 operating system or higher, while Apple CarPlay requires an iPhone 5 or later models.

OnStar 4G LTE and available Wi-Fi hotspot complement IntelliLink to enhance Yukon’s connectivity.

Fast Fact: Yukon and Yukon XL sales were up more than 11 percent for the first four months of 2016.
