GMC is Slashing up to $4,500 off the GMC Sierra HD in October 2018

GMC is Slashing up to $4,500 off the GMC Sierra HD in October 2018

The competition in the heavy duty pickup market is getting more and more heated

In the midst of heavy competition, GMC is offering a new cash incentive program to the tune of $4,500 on any new 2018 GMC Sierra HD. The nationwide incentive comes at a time when competition in the highly lucrative quarter-ton and one-ton heavy-duty pickup market is as high as it’s ever been. If dealing with its current rivals isn’t enough, the Sierra has also had to account for new entrants like the Nissan Titan XD that are making their presence known in the market. The $4,500 incentive applies to all 2018 GMC Sierra HD models, though those who are interested must abide by a number of conditions, including taking delivery of their pickup by October 31, 2018.

GM Debuting Two New Crossovers at Detroit

GM Debuting Two New Crossovers at Detroit

Looks like the Chevy Traverse and GMC Terrain will move into next generation

General Motors is set to debut two, all-new crossovers at the 2017 North American International Auto Show in Detroit come January. The news comes from a source with knowledge of GM’s plans who spoke under anonymity to Automotive News. The two crossers will be the 2018 Chevrolet Traverse and 2017 GMC Terrain.

The two family friendly vehicles are the oldest crossovers the GM’s fleet, with both dating back to GM’s 2009 bankruptcy days. In the years since, GM has focused on improving its pickup truck, large SUV, and sedan lineups. Attention has now turned to crossovers.

The first member of GM’s new generation of crossover is already selling at dealerships: the 2017 GMC Acadia. It rides on the C1XX platform shared with the 2017 Cadillac XT5. The 2017, second-generation Acadia is smaller than its predecessor, but still has three rows of seating for up to seven passengers. The same platform update is expected for the next generation Chevy Traverse, however it’s expected to retain its larger size.

As for the GMC Terrain, it will debut with a new platform shared with recently released 2018 Chevy Equinox. Both are likely to share the same powertrain options, which include a 1.5-liter turbo-four, a 2.0-liter turbo-four, and a 1.6-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder.

These updated crossovers should find great success as consumer trends have shifted towards crossovers. Even at their current age, GM sold 119,945 Traverses and 112,030 Terrains in 2015.

The Detroit Auto Show will take place January 8 through 22, with the most debuts happening Monday, January 9 and Tuesday, January 10. TopSpeed will be covering the show in force, so stick around for all the latest releases.

GM to Increase Colorado, Canyon Production by Outsourcing Cutaway Van Production

GM to Increase Colorado, Canyon Production by Outsourcing Cutaway Van Production

Navistar to build Chevy Express, GMC Savana Cutaways starting in 2017

The demand for mid-size pickup trucks is apparently overwhelming GM’s Wentzville, Montana assembly plant’s capabilities. In response, GM and Navistar have entered an agreement to free up space at Wentzville by moving production of the cutaway versions of the Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana vans to Navistar’s Springfield, Ohio plant.

The move will happen in the first half of 2017 and will not affect production of the standard cargo and passenger version of the G-series vans. The move will also add roughly 300 new jobs at Navistar as the company recommissions its second assembly line.

"We’re very pleased to partner with GM on this important manufacturing opportunity," said Persio Lisboa, president, Navistar operations. "Our Springfield plant is an important part of our manufacturing footprint, and we’ve been preparing it for a higher volume concentration of light- and medium-duty products as part of our manufacturing strategy.”

GM’s Cathy Clegg, the company’s North American Manufacturing and Labor Relations VP, voiced the positives for GM, saying, "This partnership will provide our Wentzville, Mo., assembly plant more flexibility to keep up with continued demand for mid-size trucks and full size vans."

This isn’t the first we’ve heard news of GM and Navistar teaming up. Back in July of 2015, we reported the pair was entering a mutually beneficial relationship to build Class 4, 5, and 6 medium-duty trucks. The relationship would put GM back in the medium-duty truck segment while giving Navistar the use of GM technology.

You likely remember the Navistar name for its long-standing relationship with Ford, however, which dates back to the 1980s with engine-sharing deals. Navistar also built Ford’s medium-duty trucks from 2001 through 2010. Perhaps the most memorable product was first version of Ford’s Power Stroke engine, the 7.3-liter V-8 turbodiesel. Ford and Navistar parted ways in 2010.

GM Rumored to Bring Truck Production Back To U.S.

GM Rumored to Bring Truck Production Back To U.S.

Flint, Mich. plant to increase output while Salio, Mexico plant slows

General Motors is rumored to be reallocating a majority of its Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup truck manufacturing from its Salio, Mexico plant to the Flint, Michigan assembly plant, where a large percentage of Silverados and Sierras are built.

The rumor comes from United Auto Workers Union members who say they received a letter from GM advising them of the likelihood of increased hiring of both full-time and temporary assembly line workers at the Flint plant, along with the ability for current workers to log significant overtime hours. The Detroit Bureau, which broke the story, reports union workers quoting the letter as saying, “The increase in light-duty pickup volume for Flint Assembly is (for vehicles) currently being built in Silao.” Workers say the letter continued in saying union members can work as many Saturdays as they want, earning an extra $12,000 to $15,000 next year.

Though GM and the UAW have not made official announcements regarding the move, the news does line up with GM’s sizeable, $877 million investment at the Flint plant, which was announced in August of 2015 with an estimated completion date of 2018. As we reported, the investment will bring a new body shop facility that stamps body parts like doors, hoods, fenders, and bed panels. Upgrades to the paint facility, added shipping docks, and upgraded assembly line equipment are also included in the investment.

The realignment in production is likely scheduled to commence with the introduction of the next-generation Silverado and Sierra pickups, due out for the 2018 model year. Production would need to begin in early to mid 2017 for the updated pickups.

There is no word on GM’s plans for its Silao, Mexico plant, or if this will affect Silverado and Sierra production in GM’s other assembly plants, located in Indiana and Canada.

GM Overstates MPGs on Lambda Crossovers, Now Reimbursing owners

GM Overstates MPGs on Lambda Crossovers, Now Reimbursing owners

Owners of 2016 Acadia, Enclave, and Traverse models could get $450-1,500

Fuel economy woes apparently aren’t confined to VW and Mitsubishi as General Motors announced it mislabeled fuel economy labels on three of its popular three-row crossovers, leading to a stop-sale, class action lawsuit, and customer reimbursements totaling more than $100 million.

It started in mid-May when GM announced a stop-sale of unsold 2016 GMC Acadia, Buick Enclave, and Chevrolet Traverse models due to “mislabeled” Monroney stickers showing the wrong city and highway fuel economy estimates from the Environmental Protection Agency. According to Automotive News, GM said the reimbursements will compensate roughly 135,000 customers “who may pay more for fuel than they expected after viewing the incorrect window label when they purchased or leased their vehicle.”

Customers with affected vehicles will receive an explanation letter, which details the two methods of reimbursement. Customers can choose between a prepaid debit card or can opt for extended warrant coverage. The monetary amount paid out is based on factors including the difference between the actual EPA ratings and the mislabeled window stickers. Average payouts will range between $450 to $900, with some customers receiving less while other will get up to $1,500. Those who choose the warranty coverage will receive an additional 48 months/60,000 miles on top of their 36-month/36,0000-mile standard warranty.

The erroneous fuel economy labels shows the Lambda vehicles achieving 16 mpg city and 23 mpg highway for AWD models and 17 mpg city and 24 mpg highway for those with FWD. The corrected EPA estimates are 15 mpg city and 22 mpg highway for both FWD and AWD models. The change comes after GM reportedly updated emissions control systems for the 2016 model year.

Additionally, between 30,000 to 35,000 Lambda crossovers were sold to fleet organizations like rental car agencies and other corporations. GM has yet to announce its plan to compensate those owners.

Chevy Colorado & GMC Canyon Diesels Headed to Dealerships After Delay

Chevy Colorado & GMC Canyon Diesels Headed to Dealerships After Delay

After a year-long wait for GM to release the 2.8-liter Duramax four-cylinder turbodiesel in its Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon mid-sized pickups for the 2016 model year, followed by a delay in shipment, the diesel-powered trucks are finally headed to dealerships. That’s according to a GMC spokesperson Kelly Wysocki who confirmed the news to The Detroit News.

First announced in 2014 ahead of the 2015 Colorado and Canyon’s debut in the market, the “baby Duramax” has led headlines for the mid-sized twins. Now as the 2016 model year rolls into full swing, the diesel engine is finally available as promised. Stacked atop the wait for the 2016 model year, GM withheld shipment of diesel models for a still-unknown reason.

Ironically, the logical reason is likely not the answer. It is unlikely the trucks were held up due to the fallout from the Volkswagen emission scandal. Soon after the Dieselgate news broke in September of 2015, the EPA ordered more stringent on-road testing for diesel-powered vehicles. The 2.8-liter Duramax passed those tests without issue.

Regardless of whatever reason GM delayed shipment, the Duramax-powered GM twins can now be found in showrooms. The trucks represent a major leap in fuel economy for pickup trucks, with 2WD models achieving up to 31 mpg highway and 22 mpg in the city. Opting for a 4WD model slightly decreases the fuel economy to 20 mpg city and 29 mpg highway.

Prices for the diesel-power trucks start around $35,000, with the Crew Cab, short box, LT trimmed Colorado in 2WD being the least expensive option. Unfortunately for fleet buyers, the Duramax is currently not offered in the base trim on either truck.

GMC Previews The 2016 Sierra

GMC Previews The 2016 Sierra

Well that didn’t take long. Only days after Chevrolet teased us with a single photo of the 2016 Silverado, GMC follows suite with its refreshed 2016 Sierra. Only GMC went a step further – or really nine steps further – with a bank of 10 photos of the updated full-size truck.

The new Sierra’s refresh takes after the 2016 GMC Yukon line of SUVs, using a similar C-shaped LED headlight assembly and matching C-shaped rear taillights. The Sierra’s new grille is much larger, as it extends further down into the revised bumper. Up top, the grill now has a center-mounted opening between itself and the hood’s power dome bulges.

Each trim level receives a different grille treatment. The SLT has a more traditional slotted grille, still embossed in chrome, but with a less flashy appearance. The range-topping Denali, on the other hand, get’s the classic cheese grader grille fully drenched in chrome. The All Terrain trim receives a more subdued appearance with its grille coated in a smoky gray color.

The new bumper on all non-work-truck trim levels now contains LED fog lights and chrome-colored plastic surrounding the tow hooks. Like the Silverado, there doesn’t appear to be any difference in the cab or bed’s bodywork.

Like the Silverado, the GMC gets an updated version of its infotainment software that now includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities. The integration of both aftermarket systems allows compatible smartphone users to connect their device to the GMC’s IntelliLink infotainment system and display a condensed version of their phones’ display.

Though GMC didn’t make mention of powertrain updates, expect GM’s new eight-speed automatic to appear in more trim levels. Expect more news in the coming months as both Chevy and GMC prepare for the 2016 model year. Both trucks will arrive at dealers in the fourth quarter of 2015.

2016 GMC Models Will Add Apple CarPlay

2016 GMC Models Will Add Apple CarPlay

GMC has announced that Apple CarPlay will be offered in the Canyon, Yukon, and Sierra starting in the 2016 model year. Android users also share the news, though on at a lesser extent, as Android Auto will make its way into some Sierra models at first, with the Canyon and Yukon coming later in the model year.

Apple CarPlay essentially mirrors select applications from a user’s iPhone onto the vehicle’s infotainment system. This allows operation of the phone from both the touch screen and voice controls for a more connected yet safer experience.

CarPlay allows users to make calls, send and receive messages, listen to iTunes and third party music apps like Pandora, and use the iPhone’s Maps application – all without touching their iPhone. The CarPlay interface takes after Apple’s iOS graphic user interface with a clean, crisp, colorful display that is easy to read at a glance.

The Canyon, Yukon, and Sierra models with the eight-inch IntelliLink infotainment screen will get full use of CarPlay. The seven-inch screen in base model Sierras will also have the full range of CarPlay abilities. To activate, the user simply pushes a “Projection” button on the infotainment screen when an iPhone is connected to the system. Connection must be made via the iPhone connector though a USB port, however; Bluetooth does not support the transfer of CarPlay data.

What’s more, users can take advantage of GMC’s built-in 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, saving cellular network data from accruing.

Pickups Sales Up In May, Except for F-150

Pickups Sales Up In May, Except for F-150

May proved to be an extremely strong month for sales in the pickup truck category. All but three automakers posted respectable gains in year-over-year monthly sales, with the Toyota Tacoma scoring a surprising lead of 26.3 percent growth followed by the Chevrolet Silverado at 10.6 percent. However, Ford’s F-Series posted a 9.7-percent decrease in sales over May 2014.

Ford’s slack in sales can likely be attributed to supplier issues and the gradual rollout of the all-new 2015 F-150. With dealers low on sock, Ford sold some 6,650 fewer trucks than in last May. Those supplier issues boil down to a lack of steel frames on which to build the F-150. However, Ford has announced it will be cutting its traditional two-week summer break down by half in efforts to meet demands of the F-150 and other hot-selling vehicles.

On the flip side, Tacoma sales were up 3,644 units over last May, accounting for the 26.3-percent growth. While the Tacoma has always been a hot seller, the growth is surprising with the revised 2016 Tacoma only months away. The Silverado showed impressive gains as well, selling 4,954 more trucks over May 2014.

General Motor’s new mid-size trucks are also doing well, with the Colorado selling a total of 35,017 units since its launch with the Canyon selling 12,485. Combined, the two trucks have outsold the Nissan Frontier so far this year by a whopping 17,134 units. Nevertheless, the Tacoma is still on top, selling 72,842 trucks year-to-date.

Dragging along in last place is the Honda Ridgeline with a year-to-date sales total of 496. It’s worse when looking at May 2015 sales as Honda sold a mere 26 units – a drop of 98.2 percent. Granted, Honda is preparing an all-new version of the Ridgeline due out in 2017.

While Ford may have posted a decrease in May sales, the blue oval still leads all other truck makers in terms of overall sales, having moved 302,009 F-Series trucks since January. That’s a total of 77,735 units more than the second-place Silverado.

GM Investing $1.2 Billion in Fort Wayne Truck Plant

General Motors has just announced it will be investing some $1.2 billion into its Fort Wayne, Indiana assembly plant over the next several years. The plant, which builds both light- and heavy-duty Chevrolet Silverados and GMC Sierras in both single and double cab configurations, will be getting upgrades in five major areas to facilitate the plant’s manufacturing.

Three of the five upgrade areas center on paint, including prep, application, and curing. First on the list is a new pre-treatment facility that will coat each truck body in a thin-film pretreatment paint. This will ensure rust won’t be an issue. Next, body colors will be applied using an E-coat system that is customized to each truck style. This will result in a more even paint coverage and curability. Lastly, the paint will be cured in GM’s newest radiant tube ovens that use less energy during the process.

Outside of paint, the assembly plant will receive new equipment that better facilitates the marriage between the body and the chassis of the various body configurations that are available. The plant manufactures all three weight classes – 1500, 2500, and 3500 – along with both single and double cab configurations with the various pickup box lengths, so there are plenty of combinations to account for.

Workers will also get a helping hand with the conveyance systems for the instrument panels. GM says improved ergonomics and therefore better product quality are the primary reasons for the upgrade.

The current vehicle production will not be interrupted during the construction and update phase, which is scheduled to begin in June.

General Motors: Building Houses and Bailing Out Previously Bailed-Out Banks, Using Bailout Funds

General Motors: Building Houses and Bailing Out Previously Bailed-Out Banks, Using Bailout Funds

General Motors does some pretty weird things, but also some really fantastic things. One of the latter is that GM’s CEO, Dan Akerson, will be auctioning off his 1958 Corvette, which holds a value of somewhere between $50,000 and $135,000, for charity. All of the proceeds of this auction will go directly to Habitat for Humanity Detroit, an area that truly needs the help.

We’d like to give Akerson nothing but praise here, but we can’t quite do that. Around the same time this report of generosity came out, we found out that GM is in the midst of playing Russian roulette with taxpayer dollars.

GM is the only automaker not to pay back its bailout loan, and it is now considering using this bailout money to buy international operations from Ally, the only bailed out financial institution not to repay its bail-out loan. In a fit of irony, Ally needs this bail out from the bailed-out GM in order to try and pay off its own unpaid bailout loan ... You got all of that?

So on one hand, GM is showing its compassionate side and carefully pulling the wool over our eyes, while the other hand is greedily reaching in our wallets and purses to grab a little more money. Granted, GM “paid back” the government in stock, but that is a losing effort to date and it will likely never turn into a breakeven deal for taxpayers.

In addition, if Ally needs to sell these operations to get the money together to pay back its bailout, what does GM expect to make with these operations? But that’s okay, Akerson is donating his `Vette! So pay no attention to that man behind the curtain

Main Street in Motion Event gives General Motors a leg up on the competition

Main Street in Motion Event gives General Motors a leg up on the competition

As General Motors attempts to come out of its government owned era, it has the massive task of reinvigorating the American buyer. As with most large purchases, the American consumer is also rather uneducated. As we can see by the downfall of the housing market, all too often consumers over extend themselves and make poor decisions. Admittedly, the decline of the real estate market and the downfall of the big three automakers are due to completely separate reasons, but some similarities can be found.

One of the biggest struggles that General Motors will face in the coming years is making people believe that their product is superior to the competition. As emissions laws tighten and consumers become more environmentally conscious the problem for an automaker like GM is extrapolated. GM is a company built around its truck sales and the most environmentally unfriendly thing on the road this side of a Hummer is a heavy duty pickup truck.

However, General Motors has surprised us by coming out of bankruptcy so quickly and with so much vigor. Its new models are impressive and cross every segment that the company operates in. Many may think that this is the same old GM singing a new tune that will fade away soon, but the company has organized several events to educate the consumer and let them know that these changes are here to stay.

This past weekend we attended the Main Street in Motion event in Newport Beach, CA. Several years ago we were at a similar event in Las Vegas, Nevada, but this time things were a little different. General Motors brought their typical heavy hitter models like the Corvette, Camaro, Sierra, and Tahoe. They also included some of the newer, cleaner, and less known models like the Volt, Cruze, Acadia, and Tahoe Hybrid. Those who attended were able to test drive every model and see how each model handled when compared to the competition.

General Motors to recall 26,751 vehicles over faulty rear-axle cross pins

General Motors to recall 26,751 vehicles over faulty rear-axle cross pins

And here we thought that recalls were left behind in 2010. How silly of us. 2011 is barely a month old and we already have our first recall of the year.

Taking in the honor is General Motors who is recalling 26,751 SUVs and trucks from its 2011 model line-up. According to GM, the problem concerns a defect in the rear-axle cross pins, which were not heated properly and, as a result, could fracture and get displaced within the rear axle, creating an interference condition and, eventually, causing the rear axle to lock. This, in turn, could affect the driver’s ability to maintain directional control of the vehicle and a crash could occur without warning.

Affected GM models of the recall include the 2011MY Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, Escalade EXT, Chevrolet Avalanche, Colorado, Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Canyon, Sierra, Yukon and Yukon XL vehicles.

As is the case with all recalls, General Motors has instructed their dealerships to install a new rear axle cross pin to any affected vehicle at no cost to the owner. As expected, GM’s dealers will install a new rear axle cross pin free of charge, with the safety recall to begin before the end of the month.

The GM Foundation sends relief to Haiti in the form of 30 Sierra pick up trucks

We are all well aware of situation down in Haiti, and while celebrities are holding telethons and individuals are pledging their last dollar to the relief effort, the American automaker General Motors is taking action at the request of the U.N. by sending a fleet of GMC Sierra pick up trucks to the distressed island nation as a joint effort between the GM Foundation and the William J. Clinton Foundation.

According to the former U.S. president, "I’m pleased the GM Foundation has made a generous donation of trucks to our relief efforts in Haiti, which will be instrumental in mobilizing food and lifesaving supplies,...The American auto industry has made great strides to increase aid and assistance to Haiti, and GM’s leadership demonstrates what corporate citizens can do to help the people of Haiti rebuild and recover from the massive earthquake” said Clinton. With the GMC Sierra being one of the hardest working trucks in America, we are sure that they will be right at home being put to work in Haiti.
