There is no dearth of electric cars in the market today. The technology related to EVs is still developing and every automaker has to start from scratch. Perhaps, that is why you can see a lot of new automakers here.
Millennial companies like Tesla have become an existential threat to bigger marques like Audi, BMW, and Mercedes. But, this has opened doors to a lot of new companies that are trying to make a name for themselves. One such company is Lightyear, started by a bunch of University students from the Netherlands back in 2016.
2020 Rivian R1S
Does Rivian need any introduction? Arguably the most exciting startup to have emerged after Tesla, Rivian has put itself on the map with two products – the R1T pickup truck and R1S SUV – that are slated for a launch in the latter half of 2020. The Michigan-based startup debuted the R1S at the 2018 LA Auto Show. The Rivian twins have pretty much been in the news ever since then. Rivian is touted to be the next big thing in the EV industry, and from the looks of it, it could actually give Tesla a run for its money in the pickup truck and SUV market.
2020 Sony Vision-S Concept
Just as we were prepared to suck it up and live with the painfully small amount of vehicles presented at CES 2020, Sony, known mostly for its electronics and PlayStation gaming consoles, drops the bomb by unveiling an all-electric car prototype.
No, it’s not a Porsche although it looks a lot like one, don’t you think? This contraption here is called Vision-S and with it, Sony wants to brag about its ability to keep up with the latest mobility trends that will ultimately turn our cars into downright entertainment spaces, especially once Level 5 autonomy begins to shift from exception to norm. 2020 BMW iX3
Like most automakers out there, BMW announced plans to add a large number of electrified models, but while some companies are already offering a handful of EVs and hybrids, BMW doesn’t have much to offer beyond the i3 electric hatchback and the i8 hybrid sports car. But that’s about to change soon, as BMW developed a new-generation eDrive platform that will underpin a number of vehicles in the future. The new drivetrain made its debut in the iX3 Concept, which previews a production model based on the familiar X3 crossover.
Showcased at the 2018 Beijing Motor Show, the iX3 is a mildly revised X3 on the outside. This is a sign that BMW wants its electric lineup to be familiar to company enthusiasts and it’s a hint that upcoming EVs will share design cues with the conventional Bimmers instead of getting their own unique styling, like the i3. Specs and performance details are slim as of this writing, but BMW promises an innovative drivetrain layout, an output of at least 270 horsepower, and mileage of at least 400 km (249 miles). A prototype of the production model was already spotted in the wild, so it may be unveiled early next year. Let’s find out more in the speculative review below.

2020 Volvo XC40 Recharge
Mazda has the MX-30. Volkswagen has the ID.3, and the ID.4 is almost done brewing. Porsche has the Taycan. Mercedes-Benz has the EQC and Audi the e-tron. BMW had the i3 and is now cooking the i4, while Jaguar relies on the I-Pace, so Volvo couldn’t just sit around and watch the competition get ahead. So there it is, the Swedish carmaker’s first-ever electric car, which opens the avenue for a downfall of EVs grouped under the Recharge moniker. Ladies and gents, let’s meet the new Volvo XC40 Recharge.
2020 Opel Grandland X Hybrid4
The Opel Grandland X Hybrid4 is the hybrid version of the Grandland X, a compact crossover than the German firm introduced in 2017 as a replacement for the Antara. It’s also the firm’s first hybrid vehicle. The Grandland X Hybrid4 features a 1.6-liter, four-cylinder gasoline engine and two electric motors. The total output almost hits 300 horsepower.
One of the first models launched by Opel following the takeover by the PSA Group, the Grandland X shares many underpinnings with the Peugeot 3008, which also features a hybrid variant. Not only a big departure from the Antara and Zafira as far as technology goes, the Grandland X also pushes the German brand into the hybrid market for the very first time. 2019 CUPRA Tavascan Concept
Out of all the cars churned out by the Volkswagen Group that are not of the premium/luxury ilk, Seat’s models have been the sweethearts when it comes to design, whether we’re talking the Leon, the Ibiza, or the likes of Ateca and Tarraco. CUPRA, a newly-born company that has its origins deeply rooted into the history of SEAT, is looking to follow and build on the same design creed with a stunning all-electric concept called Tavascan.
Now, as a new brand, CUPRA is just stretching its tentacles but it has been doing it with well-defined goals. For example, CUPRA has just become the official partner of FC Barcelona and it was only last month that it announced Mattias Ekstrom as its new e-ambassador and e-Racer official driver. Obviously, CUPRA is a brand that looks towards the future before anything else, so the concoction of all-electric concept cars shouldn’t raise any eyebrows. However, it’s the looks of said concepts that make us raise our hands and admit that CUPRA’s designers know what they’re doing. To further illustrate that, let’s have a closer look at the CUPRA Tavascan prototype, which the brand calls “a glimpse of our first 100% electric road vehicle.”
2020 Karma Revero GT
The Karma nameplate has a long and less-than-glittering history. First appearing as a hybrid-powered GT sedan from Fisker Automotive in the late 2000s, the original Karma only lasted for about a year before biting the dust. Fisker Automotive produced less than 2,700 examples before it went bankrupt in 2013, after which the Wanxiang Group Corporation bought up the remaining assets. Recently renamed to Karma Automotive, the company charges headlong into the premium hybrid GT segment with the Revero. The Revero first appeared in 2016 for the 2017 model year, and now it is getting a refresh with a new look, updated interior, and powertrain parts sourced from the BMW i8.
2019 Bentley Bentayga Hybrid
The 2019 Bentley Bentayga Hybrid is the electrified version of the company’s first SUV. It’s also Bentley’s first hybrid ever, as well as the world’s first luxury SUV with an electric motor. The Bentayga Hybrid joins the original 2017 Bentayga with the W-12 engine that Bentley unveiled in 2015, as well as the V-8 and diesel variants that the British firm launched since 2017.
The Bentayga Hybrid is virtually identical to the regular SUV inside and out. The exterior features an additional "fuel" cap for the plug-in socket, while the interior includes new tech and a revised infotainment system for hybrid duty. Things are notably different under the skin though, where the familiar W-12 and V-8 engines were replaced with a V-6 and an electric motor. The layout is similar to that in the Porsche Panamera E-Hybrid. Let’s find out more about this electrified SUV in the review below.
2021 Honda Jazz
Honda is testing an all-new Jazz subcompact hatchback, also known as the Fit in some markets. It’s the fourth generation for the nameplate and it looks like it will retain the wedge-nosed one-box design of its predecessors, albeit with a slightly sportier design twist.
The camouflaged prototype spotted by our spies reveals quite a lot about the car, which is slated for a reveal no earlier than 2020, since the refreshed version of the current model only came out last year. Aside from the completely new and slightly more rakish-looking body, changes will be made to its powerplant lineup and interior. The hybrid version may share its powertrain with the new Insight.

2019 Mercedes-Benz EQC
The Mercedes-Benz EQC is the company’s first all-electric crossover. Previewed by a concept car shown at the 2016 Paris Motor Show, the EQC made its debut two years later. Aimed at competitor like the Jaguar I-Pace, Tesla Model X, and the upcoming BMW iX3, the EQC is also Mercedes’ first car under the EQ brand.
Unveiled in Stockholm, Sweden on September 4, the EQC will make its auto show debut in Paris in early October. Under development for many years, the EQC is the result of Mercedes’ commitment to launch a full lineup of all-electric vehicles under the EQ brand, which stands for "electric intelligence." Although similar in size to the GLC, the EQC rides on a brand-new platform and sports a design of its own. It also debuts the company’s new-generation battery and electric motor assembly. 2020 Hispano Suiza Carmen
Hispano Suiza Cars is back after more than 70 years and it will bring its latest creation to the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. The Carmen has been described as the "next-generation electric hyperlux grand tourer” and was teased with a few pictures of its silhouette. This electric wunderkind will wear the interiors of a uber-luxurious car and pack the engine of a hypercar. For starters, it’s offered with a thousand ponies under the hood!
2019 Toyota Corolla Trek
With almost 50 million units sold since it was first introduced in 1966, the Toyota Corolla is, without question, the best-selling car in the history of the auto industry. Even if the world is populated by Corollas, Toyota has found a way to continuously reinvent the model in ways that make it popular. It comes as no surprise then that we’re going to see another reinvented version of the Corolla called the Corolla Trek at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. Based on the Touring Sports wagon body of Toyota’s best-selling model, the Corolla Trek is essentially a raised version of the wagon that’s not a lot different from the Volkswagen Golf Alltrack. The recent trend of automakers raising their wagons and hatchbacks in the name of giving them crossover-like appeal has now taken over Toyota. We’ll see what that’s about when the Toyota Corolla debuts in Geneva next month.
Fiat didn’t really want to make the 500e, but it was forced by emissions regulations to add a full EV to its lineup, which it reluctantly did back in 2013. The vehicle itself wasn’t received particularly well at the time, being criticized for its limited range and availability, as well as its high price - it can only be ordered in the states of California and Oregon, although there are plenty you can now buy second hand wherever you live, even in Europe where it was never intended to be sold.
Believe it or not, the 500e is still on sale and has gone essentially unchanged for the last six years, but it’s never really been that popular, an issue with which it hasn’t been helped by the constant introduction of new and better EVs. But, the 500e is not all bad, thanks to its instantly recognizable styling, peppy performance, and decent usability if you’re buying it exclusively for short journeys not too far away from a charging point.
2020 Atlis XT Electric Truck
Atlis Motor Vehicles - Does this sound familiar? If you are a keen EV follower, you might remember this automaker as the one who “unrealistically” claimed that its battery can be charged from 0-100 percent in 12 minutes and 35 seconds. Although many people had laughed it off and questioned the company’s survival, Atlis is actually here with a fully electric truck - the 2020 XT Pickup.
2019 Hyundai Nexo
Hydrogen fuel cell technology has been making headlines in the auto industry for a few decades now, with many claiming it’s the future of the fossil-free automobile. However, unlike the electric car market, the hydrogen segment has evolved rather slow, with most automakers opting to stay away from the big development costs and the expensive carbon-fiber fuel tanks. Until Toyota debuted the Mirai, Hyundai was the only company that actually launched a production model. The ix35 FCEV, also known as the Tuscon FCEV in some markets, was introduced in 2013. After several tests, full-scale production began in 2015 and examples were delivered in more than 20 countries worldwide. Come 2018 and Hyundai wants to take things up a notch with a brand-new model, called the Nexo.
Introduced at the Consumer Electronics Show, the event where automakers launch their high-tech products for a few years now, the Nexo will replace the ix35/Tucson FCEV. And the new hydrogen-powered EV is a significant departure from its predecessor. Not only riding on a new platform, it also features a unique design, a brand-new interior, and bespoke technology. And unlike many vehicles we usually see at the Consumer Electronics Show, the Nexo is ready to go into production and will become available in select markets later in 2018. 2018 Holden Bathurst Time Attack Concept
Just when you thought nothing truly exciting could come out in 2018 with the Holden logo on the hood, here’s the Bathurst Time Attack Concept. It was developed as a futuristic race car to mark the 50th anniversary of the company’s first major win at Bathurst.
The R&D department at Holden, in Australia, set about proving that Holden isn’t just a badge GM slaps on the Buick Regal. So they came up with a groundbreaking concept that uses fans that direct airflow in order to improve downforce through each and every corner the car tackles. It’s low, wide, electric and it isn’t real. It’s similar to a Gran Turismo concept car without being one. But we wish they’d make it.
I mean, look at it. Check the tunnels that run on either side of the monocoque, the ginormous diffuser at the back, the rear wing, everything looking like it came from 2040. And it does, in a way, because all the tech that the AVD group crammed in it isn’t all here – yet.
Audi Reveals E-Tron FE05, Preps for Upcoming Formula E Season
2018 Renault K-ZE
Renault is previewing its future mini electric crossover with the K-ZE concept revealed at the 2018 Paris Motor Show. Taking a closer look at the K-ZE, it becomes immediately apparent that it is, in fact, just a dressed up Kwid (which Renault already sells in emerging markets) which has had its internal combustion powertrain swapped out for a full-electric one.
The future electric crossover will look much closer to this concept, than it will to the current Kwid, although it will maintain its basic body shape. What will set it apart visually more significantly are the new, redesigned front and rear fascias, as well as various details around the exterior. It also promises to offer “class leading” range for a vehicle in its size-bracket.
2018 Skoda Vision RS
Unveiled at the Paris Motor Show, the Skoda Vision RS shows the path the Czech manufacturer is likely to take for the next generation of its cars. This is a hatchback, sized like a Volkswagen Golf, but sharpened up to the level of a hot-hatch. The Vision RS, a concept car, rolled under the Paris Motor Show lights with a 1.5-liter turbocharged gas engine producing 148 horsepower but assisted with an additional electric motor good for 100 horsepower. As a hybrid, the Vision RS demonstrates Volkswagen’s uncanny ability to craft modern compact cars and transform them into hot hatchbacks - a type of a car the company is definitely versed in (just remember the Golf GTI, the Leon Cupra, the Audi S3, and the Octavia, among others).
Nissan has made the Japan-only Note e-Power Nismo even faster than before, with the new Note e-Power Nismo S. That “S” entails it has some extra power thanks to a boost in its electric output.
The Note e-Power Nismo, as its name suggests, is a Nismo-tuned version of the already existing Note e-Power and the Nismo S is one additional tier above. It features not only a power boost over the regular Note e-Power, but also gets a reinforced chassis as well as a much sportier suspension setup to transform its driving experience.
This extra performance is also mirrored in the way it looks, with new red-accented bumpers and side skirts and obligatory Nismo S badges front and rear - on the sides; the e-Power badge is displayed instead. According to Nissan, the car should provide “exhilarating acceleration,” while at the same time also being quiet and is touted as a new kind of Nismo experience.
In order to avoid confusion - Nissan also sells non-electrified Nismo and Nismo S versions of the Note, alongside the electrified ones. This new model detailed here is the e-Power Nismo S, which is a range extender hybrid.
2019 BMW i3 120Ah
BMW introduced the i3 in 2013 and literally invented the premium compact EV segment in the industry. Not to mention, it has been ruling ever since. However, the i3 has been facing some heat lately from other market players like the Nissan Leaf and the Chevrolet Bolt. In my opinion, it’s got the best looks and interior, but was lagging behind in its core duty – long travel range. But it seems like BMW has worked on this and has introduced the 2019 model with 120Ah battery pack.
2019 Citroen DS 7 Crossback E-Tense 4x4
DS has been trying hard to give stiff competition to the German trio since its inception three years back. Despite having some quality vehicles like the DS3, DS4, and DS5, to name a few, the PSA Group marque has yet to announce itself as a serious threat to the rivals. In a valiant effort yet again, DS introduces the DS 7 Crossback E-Tense 4x4 – its first plug-in hybrid offering. Does this crossover have enough to stare down the German bullies?
