The Holden Commodore - imported to the U.S. in sedan guise as the Chevrolet SS - may be living its final years on the market, but the Australian vehicle continues to deliver a lot of excitement thanks to special-edition models. September 2014 already brought us the enticing HSV GTS Maloo, the most powerful Ute ever built in the land Down Under. Unlike the GTS Maloo, whose purpose was to become the most extreme ute you can buy at a dealership, this latest special-edition Commodore is based on the SS V model and pays tribute to one of Australia’s most famous racing drivers.

We are talking about Craig Lowndes, who made its first appearance in the V8 Supercar series in 1994, as a 20-year-old rookie. Lowndes finished second in Australia’s greatest race, the Bathurst 1000, that year, and then went on to become the greatest driver in Holden’s rich motorsports history. With 43 wins and three V8 Supercar championships to his name, Lowndes definitely deserves to have a Holden Commodore bearing his name. Read on to find out more about this unique sedan.

Being based on the Commodore SS V Redline, customers can expect everything to find every standard feature of the core model on the Lowndes special edition as well. That means a 6.0-liter V-8 engine, 19-inch wheels, a leather interior, an electric tilt and slide sunroof, keyless entry and a MyLink infotainment system with 8-inch touchscreen. Naturally, Holden is also throwing in a bunch of extra goodies.

Although the Australian have yet to announce the final specifications of the car, they did say the Craig Lowndes edition will come with an exclusive package that includes a framed certificate of authenticity with build plate, a Red Bull Racing private function and tour hosted by Craig Lowndes, and two General Admission tickets to each customers’ local 2015 V8 Supercar race and Red Bull Racing pit tour.

The output of this special-edition sedan is still a mystery, with details to be released closer to its on-sale date. Holden did mention the vehicle "will feature a unique set of specifications," but it’s unclear whether or not the V-8 powerplant will generate more ponies than in the standard SS V Redline. The latter benefits from 362 horsepower when selected with the standard manual transmission, while optional automatic comes with 349 horses on tap. Considering this engine is based on the LS2 V-8 found in the older Corvettes, it should be easy for Holden to push horsepower up to the 400 range.

Pricing and availability will be announced at a later date, but Holden is already taking pre-orders for Craig Lowndes’ special edition.

Press Release

In September 1994, a 20-year-old rookie made his first appearance for Holden in a V8 Supercar at Sandown, and just one month later became a household name when he and teammate Brad Jones finished second in Australia’s great race, the Bathurst 1000. That rookie was the one and only Craig Lowndes.

On the eve of Lowndes’ 20th anniversary in V8 Supercars, Holden is commemorating ‘20 years of Craig Lowndes’ with a Craig Lowndes SS V Special Edition Commodore paying tribute to an Australian motorsport legend.

On sale next month, the Craig Lowndes SS V Special Edition Commodore is based on Holden’s world-beating SS V Redline Commodore and will feature a unique set of specifications. Each car will be hand-finished and individually numbered by trained technicians at the Holden Enhancement Centre, located at Holden’s Adelaide vehicle plant.

Buyers of the Craig Lowndes Special Edition will also be offered a package of exclusive, ‘money can’t buy’ experiences including:

Framed certificate of authenticity with build plate
Red Bull Racing private function and tour hosted by Craig Lowndes
Two General Admission tickets to customers’ local 2015 V8 Supercar race and Red Bull Racing pit tour

Additional pricing, specification and further details of the Craig Lowndes Special Edition VF Commodore will be released closer to sale.

Craig Lowndes said that after a 20 year career it was a huge honour to have Holden develop this fantastic tribute model.

“I’ve had a lot of success on the racetrack behind the wheel of Commodores and to celebrate that with this special road-going version is a great privilege. I know fans and customers all over the country are going to love it,” said Lowndes.

Holden dealers are now taking pre-orders on this very special edition Commodore.
