Practical mid-size sedans are pretty popular in the country, and the Accord has been here for generations, retaining what a good all-rounder sedan can do better than an average compact crossover. Now that its latest iteration stands four years from its introduction, Honda is trying to improve its budget sedan by offering a bit more each year so that you won’t complain about its aging design. The Accord Hybrid is an impressive car in its segment, and it goes up against the likes of the Toyota Camry Hybrid and the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. Let us remind you that neither of the two competitors of the Accord Hybrid are weak. But, more on that later. The Accord Hybrid is powered by a 2.0-liter engine which is mated to dual self-charging electric motors, and when combined, the power output is 212 horsepower. It is a powerful alternative, of course, but it is efficient too. So, you might be thinking the Accord Hybrid is done for the day, right? Absolutely not. It offers great ride quality, has loads of driver assistance features by default, a spacious cabin, and a lot more, for the asking price of $27,320. So, should you buy the 2022 Honda Accord Hybrid? It is a yes from us, but read the review for a more vivid picture of this attractive budget hybrid sedan.

What’s New for the 2022 Honda Accord Hybrid?

For the 2022 model year, Honda has replaced the EX trim with Sport, which has gained sportier touches including a black rear spoiler, 19-inch wheels, LED foglights, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The 2022 model year of the Accord remains as a part of the 10th-generation model, introduced back in 2018.

Accord Hybrid Exterior

Just like the standard Accord, the outgoing model year of the Accord Hybrid has a much better-looking and sharper front-end design. The grille is now wider and bigger along with the sleek LED headlights which are slightly longer than before. LED foglights are optional on the base trim, whereas standard for the rest of the line-up. The rear has non-LED taillights and the exhaust pipe is tucked under the rear bumper. The base and the EX-L come with 17-inch alloy wheels, while the Sport and the Touring come with the bigger 19 inchers. From the side, the Accord Hybrid looks big and retains the side profile of the standard Accord. If you want to compare the looks of the Accord Hybrid to the Camry Hybrid or the Sonata Hybrid, the Accord Hybrid surely seems to be from the year 2019-ish. Is that a major con? Not really. The present look of the 2022 Accord Hybrid is still authentic.

Dimensions

The Accord Hybrid is just another mid-size sedan with very similar dimensions to its prime rivals. The 111.4-inch wheelbase, the 57.1-inch height, and even its 73.3-inch width are not too far off from what the Sonata Hybrid or the Camry Hybrid has. The curb weight depends heavily on your trim selection, so you will find it to be between 3,326 pounds and 3,446 pounds. The Accord Hybrid sits 5.8 inches above the ground, which is better than the Sonata Hybrid’s 5.3 inches.

Exterior Colors

Depending on the trim levels, you can choose between eight colors to dress up your Accord Hybrid sedan. The base trim has three free color options - Crystal Black Pearl, Lunar Silver Metallic, and Modern Steel Metallic. The Radiant Red Metallic and the Platinum White Pearl remain as $395 options. The EX-L has the same color options as the base trim. The Sport can be picked with Sonic Gray Pearl, San Marino Red, or Still Night Pearl, along with the Platinum White Pearl, Crystal Black Pearl, and Lunar Silver Metallic color options. The top-spec Touring cancels out the San Marino Red and the Still Night Pearl, but can be chosen with the other available six colors.

Accord Hybrid Performance

The Accord Hybrid’s performance is not bad at all, and don't think it performs like the Toyota Prius. It has a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter gas engine, which puts out 143 horses and 129 pound-feet alone. When combined with the electric motors, the extra 69 horses and 103 pound-feet make all the difference. The electric motors cut out the jerkiness and sluggish nature of the naturally aspirated engine. So there is ample power under your right foot from the get-go. To simply put, the Accord Hybrid’s performance is between the standard 1.5-liter turbo four-pot and the slightly more powerful optional 2.0-liter turbo four-pot. As a result, it takes about 7.1 seconds to reach 60 miles per hour and 15.7 seconds to reach a quarter-mile. The Accord Hybrid will speed up to 116 miles per hour before hitting the limiter. Both the Camry Hybrid and the Sonata Hybrid are slightly slower in the overall accelerations compared to the Accord Hybrid, by about a second in the 0-60 tests.

Engine and Transmission

The Accord Hybrid makes use of the same 2.0-liter engine from the gas-only Accord, sans the turbocharger, and is paired to twin electric motors. The combined output is 212 horsepower and 232 pound-feet of torque. There is an eCVT mated to the 2.0-liter engine and drives the front wheels only. AWD is not available throughout the models, and that is completely fine as it might have lowered the fuel economy. Compared to the Camry Hybrid and the Sonata Hybrid, the Accord Hybrid is slightly more powerful. The Camry Hybrid puts out a combined 208 horses, while the Sonata Hybrid puts out 192 horses. But, on the flipside, both the Japanese brands chose to go with CVT, while the Sonata has a six-speed automatic gearbox, meaning that the latter feels more engaging to drive rather than the dull CVTs.

Handling and Driving Impressions

Driving in city limits is where you will hardly complain about the Accord Hybrid, as Honda, like other brands, has prioritized comfort over everything else. But thanks to the stiffer chassis, the Accord Hybrid handles quite well when you are speeding up on the highways. We only wished that the steering wheel feedback could have been better while retaining a slight heftiness when taking fast corners. If you want a better handling configuration, then the top-of-the-line Touring would be the one to go for. It comes with adaptive dampers, which will make the drives more engaging than the standard setup. The overall braking feel is not the best, but not mediocre either. According to independent tests, the Accord Hybrid takes 171 feet to come to a standstill from 70 miles per hour.

2022 Honda Accord Hybrid Gas Mileage

As a hybrid sedan, the Accord Hybrid should be impressive in terms of offering good fuel economy, and it does. Both the base and the EX-L are rated to deliver 48 miles per gallon in the city, 47 miles per gallon on the highways, and 47 miles per gallon combined. The Sport and the top-spec Touring, on the other hand, has been rated slightly lower to 44 miles per gallon in the city, 41 miles per gallon on the highways, and 43 miles per gallon combined. All four trims come with a 12.8-gallon gas tank, which can take you up to 600 miles before you need to top up. Now, you might be wondering about the Camry Hybrid which offers an impeccable 51/53/52, and the Sonata Hybrid which has been rated to 50/54/52 for city/highway/combined. The numbers are great, to be honest. But, the performance-to-fuel economy ratio is well-matched to the Accord Hybrid.

Accord Hybrid Interior

If you have read our Honda Accord review, you will know how comfortable and easy-going the interior of this mid-size sedan is. Moreover, the build quality is very good. We wouldn’t say that it's the best in terms of look and feel, as the Camry Hybrid is not stepping away and neither is the Sonata Hybrid, which we think has a more modern-looking cabin. The Accord Hybrid’s interior has a lot of features baked-in throughout the trim list. There are soft touches around the cabin, including fake wood trim on the door panels and dashboard. A leather-wrapped steering wheel is not fitted as standard and is available from the Sport trim. An analog-digital instrument cluster houses in front of the driver. Unfortunately, like the Sonata Hybrid, there is no optional fully digital driver’s display. The climate control knobs and other HVAC buttons are ergonomically placed under the central air vents. The center console has the push-button gear selector on the driver’s side and two cup holders on the passenger’s side. We like the Accord Hybrid’s cabin for its minimalism, and Honda has hit the right spot in offering other upmarket features throughout the trims.

Seating and Interior Space

As standard, there is cloth upholstery, which is not as bad as it sounds, particularly for the segment. The cushioning is nice and squishy, but they are a lot better with the leather upholstery found with the EX-L and the Touring. A power-adjustable driver’s seat comes standard, except the base trim. The EX-L and the Touring come with driver seat memory functions, a power-adjustable front passenger seat, and heated front seats. The latter trim even has rear heated seats for enhanced rear-seat comfort. At the beginning of the review, we did state that Accord Hybrid is more than your average crossover SUV. What we actually meant was that its cabin is spacious to the point where you will question us like “is this true?”. Yes, it is greatly spacious for a mid-size budget sedan. The front row measures 39.5 inches of headroom, 58.3 inches of shoulder room, 55.3 inches of hip room, and 42.3 inches of legroom. What is more interesting is that the rear row has a lot of legroom and headroom too: 37.3 inches and 40.4 inches. Compared to the front row, the shoulder room suffers by about two inches, but the hip room remains very similar. The Sonata Hybrid suffers greatly in the rear row comfort, as it has only 34.8 inches of legroom. The Camry Hybrid, on the other hand, has a respectable 38 inches of rear legroom and similar headroom of 37.6 inches. The rear legroom is not as spacious as the Accord Hybrid, but is far better than the Sonata Hybrid.

Interior Colors and Materials

The interior colors majorly depend on the trim you choose, which means that the base and the Sport trim have just one interior color option, which is black. The materials used are mainly cloth and leatherette as standard. The EX-L and the Touring share ivory-colored interiors with leather inserts. The Touring has a perforated leather interior, making it stand apart from the EX-L. For the price, we think that the materials used inside the cabin are sufficient. Thank you, Honda, for not using blocks of hard plastics.

Honda Accord Hybrid Trunk and Cargo Space

Despite being a hybrid, the Accord Hybrid shares the same 16.7 cubic feet of cargo capacity as its non-hybrid brother. Honda breaks the general perspective to have smaller boot space in hybrids for making space for the batteries by using intelligent packing and space management. You can fit up to three full-size suitcases along with a few duffles, if you want to travel with the Accord Hybrid. If compared to the Camry Hybrid and the Sonata Hybrid, the Accord Hybrid is ahead by about a cubic foot. The cabin also offers ample space for small items. There is a fair-sized glovebox, a center console box, cupholders, and door pockets at your disposal.

Honda Accord Hybrid Infotainment and Features

Features

The Accord Hybrid comes loaded with features, right from the base trim. You will get stuff like:

- Dual-zone automatic climate control

- Digital-analog instrument console

- Push start

- Dual USB ports

- Automatic high beam assist

- Manually adjustable front seats

The Sport trim brings some exciting features over the standard ones, such as a leather-wrapped steering wheel and a 12-way power-adjustable driver’s seat. Other important creature comforts, such as a wireless charging pad, a power-adjustable front passenger seat, heated front seats, and a sunroof are standard with the EX-L. The Touring, being a range-topping trim, adds a heads-up display, heated rear seats, and ventilated front seats, along with all the above features.

Infotainment

A very responsive touchscreen eight-inch display remains at the heart of the infotainment system. As standard, there is Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration, along with Bluetooth connectivity and a four-speaker audio unit. SiriusXM, wireless smartphone integration, and an eight-speaker audio unit are a part of the Sport trim. Both the EX-L and the Touring pack a ten-speaker audio system, while the latter trim gains a navigation system, and a Wi-Fi hotspot.

2022 Honda Accord Hybrid Problems and Reliability

Being one of the most reliable brands, Honda will never let you down when it comes to reliability. The current 2022 Accord Hybrid has no recall yet. There are hardly any complaints lodged against this mid-size sedan, for the 2022 model year, on the NHTSA logs. The outgoing model year witnessed one due to the seat belt retractor malfunction, which affected more than 4000 units. As for the warranty, Honda provides a five-year/60,000 miles drivetrain warranty, three years/36,000 miles of overall warranty for the vehicle, and roadside assistance.

2022 Honda Accord Hybrid Safety

Honda cars are one of the safest on the road, and the federal ratings prove the same. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has rated the 2022 Accord Hybrid with full-on five-star ratings in the Frontal Crash, Side Crash, and Rollover categories. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety was very generous to award the Accord with the “Top Safety Pick+” award for 2022, alongside rating it “Good”, throughout the categories. The Accord also scored “Superior” in the crash avoidance and mitigation section.

Key Safety Features

Honda offers top-level safety and driver assistance features, including high-beam assist, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, forward collision mitigation, and traffic sign recognition, all as standard. The EX-L trim offers blindspot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and parking sensors. Other passive safety features include an electronic stability control system, tire pressure monitoring system, six airbags, passenger airbag occupant sensing deactivation, and many more.

Verdict: Is the 2022 Honda Accord Hybrid a Good Car?

The 2022 Honda Accord Hybrid is a great car to consider, even when it is not the sharpest-looking. It is well-built, packs loads of features, including a whole suite of advanced driver assistance features, and a lot more. Not to forget how comfortable and spacious it is on the inside. It is so much better in terms of rear row space than both the Camry Hybrid and the Sonata Hybrid. It is more practical too with the best-in-class cargo capacity. What amuses us is how the Accord Hybrid drives. There is ample performance on offer along with stiffer chassis for better handling management. For the starting price of $27,320, we think that the Accord Hybrid is frugal yet has ample power on the road to have fun.

What is the Price of the 2022 Honda Accord Hybrid?

The base Hybrid model starts at $27,320, which is about the same price as both the Camry and the Sonata hybrids. There is a destination charge of $955 after the MSRP. The Sport is $3,350 dearer than the base price, making it stand at $30,670. The EX-L is priced at $33,640 while the range-topping Touring model is priced at a whopping $37,190. The price difference between the rest of the line-up and the Touring is huge, that is because it has features like adaptive dampers, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and more.

2022 Honda Accord Hybrid Models

Unlike the standard Accord, the Accord Hybrid is available in four models instead of six: base, Sport, EX-L, and Touring. All models have the same 2.0-liter four-pot and two electric motors, mated to a CVT while driving the front wheels.

The base models feature dual-zone climate control, 17-inch wheels, LED headlights, keyless entry, push-button ignition, eight-inch touchscreen, manually adjustable front seats, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration, cloth upholstery, and a four-speaker audio system. As for the standard driver assistance features, there is automatic high-beam assist, forward collision mitigation, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, lane-departure warning, and traffic sign recognition.

The newly launched Sport replaces the earlier EX and packs 19-inch alloy wheels, LED foglights, a rear spoiler, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and sports pedals. Other features include a 12-way power-adjustable driver seat, wireless smartphone integration (Apple CarPlay and Android Auto), SiriusXM, and an eight-speaker audio system.

The higher EX-L models skip the Sport’s 19-inch wheels, rear spoiler, and sports pedals. It adds features such as a sunroof, auto-dimming rearview mirrors, heated front seats, a four-way power-adjustable front passenger seat, leather upholstery, a wireless charging pad, driver’s seat memory settings, and a 10-speaker audio system. The EX-L adds a blindspot monitoring system, a rear cross-traffic alert system, along with front and rear parking sensors.

The top-of-the-line Touring adds all of the above features, including the ones offered by the lower trims. It packs 19-inch wheels, a set of adaptive suspension dampers, automatic wipers, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a navigation system, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a heads-up display.

What Honda Accord Hybrid Model Should I Buy?

We recommend the Sport trim to you if you are a young buyer who wants more features including the sporty attire it comes with, like the bigger 19-inch wheels, rear spoiler, and sports pedals. Apart from these, there are some upmarket features like the LED foglights, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a 12-way power-adjustable driver seat, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration, an eight-speaker audio system, and finally a satellite radio. But, if you want good fuel economy, then you either have to go stick with the base model or the EX-L, which will set you back about $35,000 including destination charges. If money is not a factor for you, the top-spec Touring will offer everything you want from a budget mid-size sedan. It also sports adaptive dampers for enhanced handling dynamics.

2022 Honda Accord Hybrid vs 2022 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

There is no major price difference between the Accord Hybrid and the Sonata Hybrid, but the latter is more modern-looking. The Sonata Hybrid has an upmarket interior with an optional 12.3-inch driver information display and a bigger 10.25-inch infotainment display, which is also an optional fitment. Neither of these is available in the Accord Hybrid. But the latter offers better interior build quality along with best-in-class rear legroom, so taller individuals would fit perfectly at the rear. The Accord Hybrid is a lot more practical than the Sonata Hybrid. It is also more powerful, but at the cost of exceptional fuel economy, which the Sonata Hybrid offers.

2022 Honda Accord Hybrid vs 2022 Toyota Camry Hybrid

We love how the Toyota Camry Hybrid looks and is a lot better-looking than the Accord Hybrid. To be honest, we feel that Toyota was planning for a sports sedan but later changed its mind. Both the Accord Hybrid and the Camry Hybrid have great feeling interiors with ample features on offer. While both the sedans' front rows are large and comfortable, the Camry Hybrid's rear row has two inches shorter legroom than the Accord Hybrid's. The Accord Hybrid packs a slightly larger boot space for better practicality, but better fuel economy is slightly bagged by the Camry Hybrid.
