When Mugen revealed its parts list for the 2020 Honda Civic Type R, it brought tons of carbon fiber, Alcantara, and some extreme exterior elements. For the most part, the same can be said for the standard Civic hatchback, but nothing is near as extreme. That is, arguably, a good thing, though, so let me explain to you what you can get for the base Civic hatch.
This LS-Swapped and Turbocharged Honda S2000 Is the King of Tuner Vehicles
The Honda S2000 is one of the most desirable Japanese sports cars of its era. From its attractive looks to its peppy 2.0-liter inline-four cylinder engine that produced as much as 247 horsepower and 161 pound-feet of torque, the S22000 was as desirable as any sports roadster that hit the scene at the turn of the millennium. To this day, interest in the S2000 remains strong, in large part due to the seemingly limitless tuning possibilities it provides. Take this particular S2000, for example. It belongs to Mason Whitlow, an employee of tuning shop Holley, who bought his S2000 in standard form, only to have it upgraded into a complete monster on four wheels. It’s still a Honda S2000 in form, but everything else is entirely different. We’re not talking about a spunky 248-horsepower sports roadster anymore. This S2000 is now a 707-horsepower beast of epic proportions. At the very least, this build is a rolling advertisement, not only of Holley but, more importantly, of the many ways people have grown to love the Honda S2000.

Graduate students at Clemson University have completed building one of the coolest Honda Civics you’ll ever see. It still looks like the current Civic, but a lot of what lies under the surface has changed, none more important than the car’s powertrain. No longer is this Civic running solely on a traditional gas engine. It still has one in the form of a 2.0-liter, supercharged, four-cylinder engine, but it also features an electric motor that helps bring the car’s total output to 600 horsepower.
Honda’s New S660 Neo Classic Body Kit is A Love Letter To Japan’s Kei Cars
The Honda S660 Roadster is getting a Kei-infused transformation with the introduction of the S660 Neo Classic body kit. Limited to the Japanese market, the body kit turns the S660 roadster into a retro-styled Kei car in the mold of the S660 Neo Classic Prototype that Honda unveiled at the 2017 Tokyo Auto Salon. The kit costs 1.296 million yen, which converts to a little over $11,000. No; it doesn’t come cheap.

And, in a weird turn of events, Honda engineers have decided to chop one up and turn it into a proper pickup truck. Yes; a pickup truck. And, the weird part is that it’s pretty damn cool.
Honda Civic Type R Gets The One Republic Treatment
Yes, you’re reading that right. The Honda Civic Type R, the purveyor of hot hatch madness, just received a styling overhaul courtesy of One Republic, the American band that’s responsible for hit songs like "Apologize," "Counting Stars," and "Secret." It seems like an ideal match from a popularity standpoint, and to the surprise of many, the finished product actually looks pretty good, save for a few complaints. Can’t have everything, can you, One Republic?
The one-off Civic Type R is actually part of Honda’s 2017 Honda Civic Tour where fans of the model will get a chance to see what’s new and cracking in the world of the Civic. One Republic has been tapped to headline this tour and that explains why Honda asked the band to design their own stylistic interpretation of the hot hatch. This is the result and, well, I actually like it. It’s not obnoxious in any way and the use of the matte black and red accents was done in a way that they don’t take away from the things that make the Civic Type R the desirable piece of machinery that it is. Whether you agree with me or not, we will get to see more of the One Republic-designed Honda Civic Type R in the coming months as it embarks on a cross-country tour in the U.S. alongside a custom Honda Rebel motorcycle that was also designed by the band.

The Hoonigan Crew And Bisimoto Prove The Fix For Uncool Is More Horsepower: Video
Not too long ago, minivan ownership was akin to admitting defeat, a white flag waved in the interest of replacing fun with practicality. Luckily, that’s not always the case any more. Just ask Bisi Ezerioha, founder of Bisimoto Engineering, who built the above-featured 1,000-horse Honda Odyssey. “I started a young family, and I love cars, I love speed,” Bisi says.” So, I’m a guy who loves speed, loves to go fast, build crazy horsepower, but I have a family now, so what do I do? Build a minivan.” Makes sense to us.
Bisi cut his teeth in the world of speed by setting numerous records in FWD Honda drag racers. These days, he’s running one of the most badass tuner shops in the country – Bisimoto Engineering, based out of Ontario, California. You may have heard the name before. Bisimoto Engineering is responsible for some of the most exciting builds to hit the scene in recent memory, including a slew of jaw-dropping Porsches (here’s one example, a Steve McQueen tribute). Or there’s this 1,000-horsepower Hyundai Santa Fe that graced SEMA last year. With a resume like that, a four-figure Odyssey looks like business as usual. At about just under 20 minutes, the video is kinda long, but worth it to see this slammed people mover killing tires at Hoonigan HQ.

1320 Video Features A Giant Turbo With A Honda Attached: Video
I’ve never been there, but I hear Australia has some pretty scary local fauna. Spiders, snakes, sharks… well, it looks like our friends over at 1320 Video found another crazy bit of local wildlife, and it’s got an H badge on the hood. I’ll just cut straight to the chase – what you see before you is a very petite Honda S600 stuffed with a very boosted Toyota 2JZ engine. As if that wasn’t enough, the owner grafted on a positively mammoth 88 mm turbo, blessing the 2,400-pound import with 1,200 horsepower at the rear wheels! It’s enough to run the quarter mile in 7.7 seconds at 167 mph, which ain’t bad for a half-century old tin can.
Of course, I say that with the utmost respect. This build is extremely clean, and the whole car looks polished and sleek, especially under the hood. But if you think seeing that ginormous turbocharger peeking out of the hood borders on the ludicrous, just wait until you see this car attack the drag strip. Watching the Honda race, it looks cartoonishly fast, like it should be leaving a hazy outline of a two-door hatchback at the starting line while lifting the front wheels off the black stuff. Awesome!
The new Civic Type R Concept has made its debut in near-production form, and it’s damn near breaking the internet with everyone from around the globe dying to learn all about it. And, rightfully so, everyone should be pretty excited. I mean, just look at it. That aggressive aerodynamic styling, the wing designed for function, that brushed aluminum vinyl wrap, and that WRX STI-looking scoop on the hood. It’s pretty clear that Honda is looking to take back its throne in the hot hatch department. Needless to say, the road-going production model is going to be all that and a bag of chips.
But, before I go making a mess all over myself getting too excited about this concept, let’s talk about why I think it’s going to be the world’s ultimate tuner. We don’t know for 100-percent certainty what will actually motivate the road-going Type R, but Honda just went to all the trouble of building the 2.0-liter, turbocharged, VTEC powerplant with 306 horsepower, so that’s the most likely candidate. In the old Type R – you know, the one we didn’t get here in the U.S. – it was enough to push the car to 62 mph in 5.7 seconds on the way to 167 mph. But, the Civic Type R now has to compete with cars like the Ford Focus RS, so we expect to see a fair jump in performance. How big of a bump is the real question.
Given the fact that the Focus RS pushes 350 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque here in the U.S., you can expect similar numbers from the Type R. Even better yet, that 2.0-liter VTEC tachs out 200 rpm higher that the Focus RS, so the Type R could have just a little more push in that department. Sure, the Civic is FWD, and the Focus RS is RWD, but that doesn’t matter at this point. In the end, if the road-going Type R looks as good as this concept, and we suspect it will, it already looks better than the RS, and I think Honda is going to do well on the power front too.

Believe it or not, this is a Honda Fit. Or Honda Jazz if your market sells it under that name. It’s hard to imagine how the Fit can lose its funky five-door hatchback character, but if there’s a tuner that has proven to be adept at such conversions, it’s Tjin Edition. The American aftermarket company has been in the customization business long enough to create a catalog of products that have been displayed at the SEMA Auto Show.
This year, the Fit Tjin Edition joins the ranks with a long list of upgrades that would put most SEMA-bound vehicles to shame. The Fit Tjin Edition is a collaborative undertaking that saw a handful of tuning firms get involved. Unique Fabrication was involved, as was L&R Autobody, Falken Tires, Baer Brakes, AirREX, VIAIR, Bisimoto Engineering, Copius, Katzkin Leather, and Sony. Together, all these firms created a program that is nothing short of transformative for the Honda Fit.
That’s what you look for at an event like SEMA and like in year’s past, Tjin Edition is going to the dance with a program that will turn heads into full-fledged swivels.

When it comes to tuning Japanese cars, Hondas have a lot of potential. They’re affordable, easy to meddle with, and there are tons of shops willing to dress them up inside and out. Of course, not all Hondas have what it takes to become a show car, but the automaker’s American division is out to prove that the tiny Fit is as good of a base car as the Civic. Specifically, Honda commissioned six build teams to create a beefed-up Fit of their own for the 2014 SEMA Show, and it needs your help to decide which one is the winner.
Bisimoto Engineering, Kontrabrands, MAD Industries, Spoon Sports USA, Tjin Edition and Kenny Vinces have the opportunity to customize a 2015 Fit leading up to the SEMA Show, while Honda will be promoting the contest through the Fit Performance Project campaign on its Tumblr page. Over there, you can keep track of the progress of each team, and vote by liking and reblogging posts tagged with #ProjectFit. The shop that wins the contest will receive an award from Honda and will have its effort promoted on several social media platforms.

The Honda S2000 debuted in 2000 and harked back to Honda’s sports cars of years past, including the S500, S600, and S800. The S2000 was a tuner’s dream, as it weighed just 2,800 pounds, had 240 horses and a chassis that was on par with the Miata. The unfortunate side of the original S2000 was that the horsepower didn’t peak until 8,300 and it could only muster up 153 pound-feet of torque. By time the 2009 model year rolled around, the S2000 had run its course and went the way of the dodo bird, but not before Honda Performance Development decided to add a lot more displacement to the roadster’s engine compartment as an experiment.
With a 3.7-liter, V-6 engine HPD presents the creatively named S3700. This V-6 engine a production unit that was sourced from the Acura lineup. In its home engine bay, this engine developed 300 to 305 horsepower and 273 to 275 pound-feet of twist, depending on the application, but Honda failed to reveal what the output is for this Pikes Peak racer. I did learn that back in 2009 when HPD built the first S3700, it had a 9.55-to-1 power to weight ratio. Given the 2,825-pound weight of the original S3700, my math says that this engine produced 296 horsepower. It’s safe to assume that this version of the S3700 will retain that output.
We only have a single image to show you, but as you can see, this Pikes Peak racer dons a white base coat with a red racing stripe down the driver side of the car. Also present it a hefty bulge in its hood to make room for the larger, V-6 engine and large lip spoiler under the nose.

The current-generation Honda Civic’s design has been much maligned by everybody, including Honda itself. The reception’s been so bad that even Honda tried to hustle through extensive interior and exterior design upgrades for the 2013 model.
Fortunately, the Japanese automaker’s in-house aftermarket arm, Mugen, has come to offer some assistance of its own in the form of a new styling package for the Euro-spec Civic.
The package is purely aesthetics, which actually is a good thing considering the amount of help the Civic needs to make it palatably desirable. Mugen’s new front spoiler and a revised grille are big bonuses to add a splash of aggression to the car’s front profile. Aerodynamic side skirts are also offered, as is a new rear diffuser, a carbon-fiber rearview mirror cover, a tailgate-mounted wing, Mugen badging, anodized aluminum oil caps in Champagne Gold, Silver Grey, Red, Blue or Black, and a choice of three different sets of wheels that can be had in a number of different finishes.
If only Honda had Mugen design the Civic, then it probably wouldn’t be in the pickle it is in now.
Seeing as the Tokyo Auto Salon will be take place in Honda’s home country, nobody should be surprised to find out that the Japanese automaker will be there in full force, showcasing a number of special-edition models and custom-tuned vehicles.
One of the latter is the Mugen-tuned Honda CR-V. Looking at the first set of images of the completely tricked out SUV, you’d think that Mugen did a real number on the vehicle. Well, it did, fitting the CR-V with plenty of new components that make the standard model almost look bland.
For one, the new front grille is way more aggressive on this version and it even comes with a huge brushed-aluminum bar. There’s also a new front bumper, chrome fender trims and a faux skid plate for added aesthetic appeal. Along the sides, wider side skirts were installed and the rear looks to have gotten a new bumper cover with stacked exhaust outlets. Lastly, a roof spoiler was added for a sportier look.
There’s still no word on whether Mugen modified the interior and engine, but there’s a good chance that it did and opted to keep those under wraps until the program makes its official debut in January.
Honda’s display at the 2012 SEMA Auto Show features a number of finely tuned Accords, including one that carries Honda’s very own X-Package.
While not as ostentatious as some of the projects you’ll see at SEMA, the Accord Sedan X-Package does carry some styling cues that can translate to a production model. The aforementioned X-Package is actually made by Honda to create a sporty, low-profile custom look for the vehicle. The kit in itself includes a number of added components, including a front and side under body, rear under body spoilers, a new sports grille, and a wing spoiler.
For the show model that is at SEMA, Honda decided to give the Accord Sedan an added vista flair, thanks to a two-tone color that features a predominant white body color with a sparking blue hood, front grille, and roof.
The goal of this show car isn’t so much to drop jaws at SEMA but to give the gathered crows a chance to see what the company’ X-Package is all about when fitted into an Accord Sedan. Anybody interested in the marker can opt to add it for a price of just $2,171, excluding installation.
Judging by the showpiece model, we’d say that the price is well worth the accentuated aerodynamic styling on the Accord Sedan. That’s money well spent in our books.
Everyone knows Bisimoto Engineering for their amazing street and race vehicles, but the 2012 SEMA Show is proving to be an opportunity for them to show off just how much they can do. They have already unveiled a few impressive updated vehicles, like the 600 HP Elantra GT, but they’re adding yet another one to their list with the Grand Touring package based on the 2013 Honda Accord Coupe.
The tuner started by adding HPF side skirts, a fascia kit for the front and rear, and continued with a Gatorwrap custom laminated body wrap combined with a Denmatic design scheme. The interior received GT3 racing seats and a roll cage.
The exterior and interior upgrades were only thrown in to provide a complete package because the real star of the show is the upgrades of the engine. The Honda’s standard V6 engine has been tricked to deliver an amazing 401 HP (up from the standard 300). For this update, the tuner used a supercharger system and a new Cat-back exhaust system.
The Honda Accord Coupe sits on a new set of 19"aluminum wheels combined with a coil suspension and a sway bar.
When Honda was teasing us with the Honda CR-Z back in late-2009 and early-2010, the teaser commercials showed us a hybrid that provided the perfect balance of economy and sport. This made us all immediately think that we were about the get the performance-minded hybrid we had been hoping for.
Well, when we finally received the specs on the 2011 CR-Z, we were slightly disappointed with the 122 horsepower and 128 pound-feet of torque that its 1.5-liter 4-pot pumped out. We were even more distraught when we found out that it only got 31 mpg city and 37 mpg highway – both numbers are now eclipsed by gasoline-only cars. The lack of power translated out to an 8.3-second sprint to 60 mph, which was about 1.5 seconds slower than we all expected to see.
Well, it looks like Jackson Racing has finally come up with a solution for those disappointed CR-Z drivers, as it has released a supercharger that will add some excitement to the equation, but only for 6-speed models.
This supercharger is available in three stages: tune yourself for $3,995, factory tuned for $4,495, and tuner system for $4,995. The first option includes only the supercharger system, the second system includes the supercharger, Hondata ECU remap and high-flow injectors, and the final kit includes the supercharger, Hondata FlashPro, Jackson’s CR-Z FlashPro calibration and high-flow injectors.
The latter kit will push the CR-Z’s output up by up to 50 horsepower and 45 pound-feet of torque, which increases it to an acceptable 172 horsepower and 173 pound-feet of torque. This likely brings the CR-Z’s 0 to 60 time into its anticipated range of about 6.7 seconds.
According to Jackson, this kit will not affect the CR-Z’s fuel economy under regular driving. However, if you like to keep your foot in the cooling fan, you will likely see steep fuel economy drop off. Jackson is currently working on an option for those with the whiny CVT. We say step one of that process should include scrapping the transmission, but we may be a little biased...

We do our best to keep you in the loop when it comes to new and cool developments in the automotive world. One of the hottest topics going right now in the U.S. is automated driving. Though it is still several decades away from being a national reality, although some states are legalizing autonomous cars, we are still seeing some progress. The leader in this technology to date in the U.S. is the Google Prius, but other automakers - such as Cadillac and Ford - sniffing around the automated car sector.
In Japan, however, they are taking the bull by the horns and setting up an outline for national implementation of an autonomous driving system. According to a report from Tech-On, the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism (MLIT) is starting to piece together how to make automated driving a reality in as little as eight years.
Starting immediately, the MLIT will start piecing together the problems related to automated driving and neatly package it in an interim report that is due for release in March of 2013. Some of the issues at hand have to include: driver attentiveness, driver override ability, handling of accidents, and infrastructure development.
The MLIT has already employed the help of Toyota, Nissan, Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (A.K.A. Subaru), Honda, and Mazda in this project. Heading up the entire team is Yasuo Asakura, a professor at the Tokyo Institute of Technology.
For now, this is all just talk and we will see if anything ever comes of it. If this is actually a serious deal, it could drastically accelerate the timeframe that we in the industry have set for automated cars. Way back when dinosaurs roamed the earth, I was a spritely high school graduate heading into my first semester at college as a business administration – I know, my prospective career took a detour. In between Frat parties, sports, and chasing those of the opposite sex, I found myself in classes, some of which were about marketing correctly. The key to marketing is to get your viewers’ attention, flash your product, then leave the viewers with a lasting impression to remember you by.
Well, Hoonigan.com absolutely mastered the art of “gaining your viewers’ attention” with its latest attempt to peddle its online wares. Not only does this video contain some hooning awesomeness, but it is bursting at the seams with it. Pretty much every single awesome car video we have seen in the last five (or so) years has a several-second spot in this ad. Hell, there is even some Power Wheels hoonage at the 45-second mark and some bicycle hoonage going on at the 58-second mark.
All we can do is tip our collective hats to the folks that put together this video and the countless number of hours that must have been put in watching various videos. Just finding the videos alone must have taken hundreds of hours, but then editing them, dubbing Motorhead’s “Ace of Spades” over it, and splicing it all together, Phew.
Some highlights are the Subaru WRX vs. Snowboarder downhill race at to 50-second mark, the Honda Civic passenger running for his life at the 38-second mark, and the worlds greatest drift pass at 1:23. If there is a single short car clip to watch so far this year, this is it!
For six months, Mugen has lead us all to believe that their Honda CR-Z Concept was just for display purposes, wiping away any hopes of ever seeing a production model. Now it seems as though they have come around and officially confirmed that the Honda CR-Z by Mugen will indeed see the light of production day. It will be put on sale in February 2012, with prices in the UK starting at £23,000 or about $36,000 at the current exchange rates.
The production version Mugen CR-Z will use a supercharger and a remapped ECU to increase power for the 1.5L four cylinder engine to 197 HP and 158 lb-ft of torque, up from the standard 122 HP and 128 lb-ft of torque. Next to the extra power, customers will also have the opportunity to choose between a wide range of Mugen accessories, including stiffer springs and dampers, larger wheels, bigger brakes, and replacement carbon bonnet and doors.
Maybe it’s a coincidence that Honda has confirmed the production version Mugen CR-Z at the same time Toyota and Subaru debuted the GT 86 and BRZ, respectively, or maybe they are developing this model solely for viable competition. Let us know what you think in the comments section below.
The 2012 Honda CR-Z Mugen is beginning to take shape with at least one special edition model already being announced. The 2012 CR-Z iCF Mugen is being prepared by Honda U.K., promising the kind of performance capabilities that are befitting of Mugen’s fine-tuning.
For now, the only details that have surfaced regarding the CR-Z iCF Mugen is that it will carry a modified 1.5-liter engine that comes with an added centrifugal forced air induction system and a remapped ECU that takes the output of the hot hatch to an impressive 173 horsepower. This improved powertrain system allows the car to hit 0-62 mph in just 6.1 seconds while boasting of a top speed of 130 mph.
There doesn’t appear to be any final declarations as to how many of these cars will be sold by Honda UK Mugen dealers in the coming future. But for those interested to know how much a piece will sell for, Honda has announced that one model will carry a price tag of £24,000, which is around $37,200 based on current exchange rates.
