If cheap and efficient drives are what you care for, then the Accord Hybrid might just sweep you off your feet

Practical mid-size sedans are pretty popular in the country, and the Accord has been here for generations, retaining what a good all-rounder sedan can do better than an average compact crossover. Now that its latest iteration stands four years from its introduction, Honda is trying to improve its budget sedan by offering a bit more each year so that you won’t complain about its aging design. The Accord Hybrid is an impressive car in its segment, and it goes up against the likes of the Toyota Camry Hybrid and the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. Let us remind you that neither of the two competitors of the Accord Hybrid are weak. But, more on that later. The Accord Hybrid is powered by a 2.0-liter engine which is mated to dual self-charging electric motors, and when combined, the power output is 212 horsepower. It is a powerful alternative, of course, but it is efficient too. So, you might be thinking the Accord Hybrid is done for the day, right? Absolutely not. It offers great ride quality, has loads of driver assistance features by default, a spacious cabin, and a lot more, for the asking price of $27,320. So, should you buy the 2022 Honda Accord Hybrid? It is a yes from us, but read the review for a more vivid picture of this attractive budget hybrid sedan.

A fourth-gen subcompact from the H Badge

Honda is testing an all-new Jazz subcompact hatchback, also known as the Fit in some markets. It’s the fourth generation for the nameplate and it looks like it will retain the wedge-nosed one-box design of its predecessors, albeit with a slightly sportier design twist.

The camouflaged prototype spotted by our spies reveals quite a lot about the car, which is slated for a reveal no earlier than 2020, since the refreshed version of the current model only came out last year. Aside from the completely new and slightly more rakish-looking body, changes will be made to its powerplant lineup and interior. The hybrid version may share its powertrain with the new Insight.

Honda’s first electrified crossover for Europe

Honda’s first electrified crossover for the European market is the new CR-V hybrid which it introduced at the 2018 Paris motor show. It is the second powertrain option that Honda offers on the Old Continent, after the 1.5-liter turbo shown at the Geneva motor show, and it promises decent performance with excellent economy thanks to its combination of a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle engine and two electric motors - it also does away with a conventional gearbox.

Instead, it uses a single fixed-gear ratio that sounds quite similar to what the Koenigsegg Regera uses, albeit in a less fancy package - one gear and plenty of electric boost at lower speeds before the engine starts to pick up. Honda offers the CR-V hybrid in both front- and all-wheel drive configurations with the latter only incurring a minimal fuel efficiency penalty.

The North American version of the vehicle will be nearly identical in terms of specs and look to the one revealed in Paris.

Graduate students at Clemson University have completed building one of the coolest Honda Civics you’ll ever see. It still looks like the current Civic, but a lot of what lies under the surface has changed, none more important than the car’s powertrain. The Japanese hybrid returns after four years!

Introduced in late 1999, the Honda Insight was the first production car to feature the company’s then-new Integrated Motor Assist system. It was also the first hybrid launched in North America, arriving in showrooms seven months before the Toyota Prius. Production ended in 2006, after only 17,020 units built, with plans to roll out a replacement in 2009. The second-gen model arrived on time, but this time as a five-door hatchback. The Insight was discontinued for the second time in 2014, mostly due to slow sales. Come 2018, and Honda revived the nameplate with a modern design and a new drivetrain. A pre-production prototype was unveiled at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show, while the production model was launched at the New York Auto Show.

"The Honda Insight is anticipated to receive fuel economy ratings competitive with the best hybrids in the segment, with styling that will have universal appeal inside and out and best-in-class passenger volume," said Henio Arcangeli Jr., senior vice resident of American Honda. The redesigned Insight will join four other electrified Hondas, including the Clarity Plug-in Hybrid, Electric, and Fuel Cell, and the Fit EV. Slotted between the Civic and the Accord, the new Insight is now described as a premium sedan, mostly because it has a more elegant exterior design and more modern appointments and convenience features inside the cabin. More eco-friendly sensibilities for the European market

As the SUV and crossover body style continues to grip European markets with a surge in popularity, automakers are rushing to fill any and all gaps left in their tall-bodied lineup. Honda is no different, and without a green alternative in its compact crossover offerings, competitors like Kia and Toyota are scooping up sales left right. Basically, it boils down to missed opportunities for the H badge, but now, that’s about to change as Honda previews its upcoming hybrid CR-V. It’s called the CR-V Hybrid Prototype, and quite frankly, that “Prototype” in the name is probably completely unnecessary – this thing looks almost totally production ready. Not only is this the first time Honda has brought hybrid tech to a European-market SUV, but it’s also rumored the model could come stateside some time in the future. Either way, expect sharper styling, a 2.0-liter gas engine, and two electric motors.

The prototype will get its big public reveal later this month at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show, following in the footsteps of an earlier, China-bound hybrid CR-V revealed at the Shanghai Motor Show in April. The Accord Hybrid gets an updated exterior, new technology, and update hybrid drivetrain

Honda gave the Accord a much-needed facelift for the 2016 model year and, now that 2017 models are starting to break cover, Honda has upgraded the Accord Hybrid. Not only does it get that beautiful design language that just screams Acura, but it also gets an updated hybrid powertrain that promises to offer better fuel economy and performance. Furthermore, the Accord Hybrid also receives a new, more compact battery pack, which should increase trunk capacity to a midsize hybrid class-leading 13.5 cubic-feet.

John Mendel, the Executive Vice President of American Honda Motor Company, said, “The new Honda Accord Hybrid is the ultimate Accord – the most refined, technologically sophisticated and, of course, most fuel efficient in the lineup. With Accord already America’s most popular car three years running and the best-selling midsize car to younger buyers, we think this new hybrid model will add considerable momentum for the Honda brand.”

The 2017 Honda Accord Hybrid will come in three different trims, offer several different driving modes, and come with a long list of optional features that promise to make it the best Accord Hybrid to date. So, with that said, let’s take a closer look at the new Accord Hybrid and go into better detail about what you can expect. It makes its first public appearance at the Aquarium on the Pacific in Long Beach during the Earth Day celebrations on April 23rd and 24th.

2015 Honda Fit Hybrid

Honda announced today the first details on the next-generation Fit Hybrid that is set for release on the Japanese market this September. The third-generation Fit will be one of the most innovative hybrid models ever offered by Honda. It will be the first Honda model equipped with the Sport Hybrid Intelligent Dual Clutch Drive (i-DCD) that will ensure a fuel economy ratings of 36.4 kilometers per liter (about 86 mpg).

The new hybrid system combines a newly developed 1.5-liter in-line four-cylinder engine with the earlier mentioned i-DCD. The i-DCD system includes a seven-speed DCT system with a built-in high-output motor and the IPU (intelligent power unit) equipped with a built-in lithium-ion battery.

There is also an electric servo brake system that stores energy while braking and provides a fully-electric compressor that reduces engine load. With all these updates, Honda’s new hybrid system ensure a fuel economy improvement of 35 percent when compared to the current IMA hybrid system.

The new hybrid system also features three driving modes that alternate between gasoline and electric, depending on the driving situation: EV Drive, Hybrid Drive Mode and Engine Drive Mode.

Before you get too excited, you have to know that this Fit will not be offered on the U.S. market. However, Honda plans to use this technology in the U.S. on a sedan that it will build on the Fit platform.

2014 - 2015 Honda CR-Z

Honda unveiled the CR-Z in 2010 and for the 2013 model year, it revised its resident sport hybrid with a new front bumper design and a revised grille. The biggest changes however, took place under the hood, where the 1.5-liter, gasoline engine was tweaked to deliver an extra seven horsepower and the electric motor an extra six horsepower.

For the 2014 model year, the CR-Z remains unchanged, except a slightly changed price figure. We were really hoping for a few more tweaks to the powertrain, but at least Honda kept the CR-Z as the only hybrid model with a manual transmission option.

Customers can choose between two different versions: the base CR-Z priced from $19,9952 and the EX trim with a starting price of $21,840. Both models are offered with a manual transmission as standard, but buyers can opt for a CVT. Additionally, buyers can opt for a navigation package in the EX package that increases the price to $23,990.

Updated 10/08/2014: Honda announced prices for the 2015 CR-Z which goes on sale on-sale today with no updates over the 2014 model year. Prices will range from $20,145 for the standard model equipped with the six-speed manual transmission up to $24,140 for the CR-Z EX CVT with Navi.

2014 Honda Accord Hybrid

Details about this fall’s new Accord Hybrid are starting to trickle from Honda in the form of official images and a boast about the new midsize sedan’s 47 mpg combined rating. The Hybrid model leverages the advanced Sport Hybrid battery systems, new engine and aerodynamic tweaks from its pricier Plug-in Hybrid Accord sibling.

Luckily, the Accord Hybrid benefits from the latest LED styling outside and new high-tech eco displays inside – without the questionable new nose Honda grafts onto the PHEV (as well as this regular Accord Hybrid outside the U.S.)

There is still blue-tinted lighting and badges galore, but this time it is not trying to disguise old halogen bulbs like on the CR-Z.

Pricing and final stats for the Hybrid’s smaller lithium-ion battery pack are not yet available and will directly influence the showroom costs. The Accord PHEV’s $40,000-plus pricing has raised some eyebrows, but the new Hybrid will be built on the regular Ohio assembly line for the first time – hopefully bringing savings versus the Japanese-built Accord PHEV.

Pricing in the low $30,000 range will put the new Honda about $2,000 above similarly equipped Toyota Camry and Ford Fusion Hybrid sedans. Buyers are still lapping up the base $23,000 Prius hatchback’s mileage and ease of use. Even so, the the real sales prize will be winning over not just early adopters but mainstream sedan shoppers with an eye on fuel economy and cruising refinement.

2013 Honda CR-Z

Honda unveiled the CR-Z back in 2010, but it looks like the little sports coupe is going to receive its first facelift treatment a little earlier than anticipated. The new CR-Z made its official debut at the 2012 Paris Auto Show and will go on sale in January 2013.

The updated CR-Z has received subtle revisions to the exterior and interior, with the biggest changes being made under the hood. The 1.5-liter petrol engine has been tweaked to deliver an extra 7 horsepower and the electric motor an extra 6 horsepower. With a total of 137 horsepower, the CR-Z will now sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 9 seconds (down from 9.7 seconds).

The new CR-Z has also received a Plus Sport (S+) boost system that delivers increased acceleration for up to ten seconds when the battery is more than 50% charged.

UPDATE 11/19/2012: Honda U.S.A. has announced prices for the 2013 CR-Z that will go on sale November 21, 2012. Prices will start from $19,975 for the standard version and from $21,655 for the EX version.

2012 Honda HPD Supercharged CR-Z Concept

If anyone ever had any doubt that the Honda CR-Z is an incredible vehicle, despite its hybrid powertrain, then they should be checked into the hospital. The CR-Z drives and feels like any other sports car on the market, maybe even better, but for those that are doubtful, check out the new CR-Z introduced by Honda Performance Development at the 2012 SEMA Auto Show.

The Honda HPD Supercharged CR-Z Concept continues with the improvements introduced last year, but is even better with a few enhancements to improve acceleration, handling, and stopping. For starters, the CR-Z’s IMA hybrid system gets bumped up from 124 HP and 131 lb-ft of torque to a total of 185 HP and 169 lb-ft of torque. In addition to this bump in power, the CR-Z also gets a new sport exhaust and a new sport suspension. The concept sits on a new set of wheels wrapped in high performance tires combined with sport brakes. Then there’s that incredible red exterior paint finish that just screams, "Look at me!"

It may only be a concept, but there’s always hope for production when it comes to cars like this.

That didn’t take long, did it?

Only days after Honda unveiled an updated version of their sports hybrid model, the CR-Z, the Japanese automaker has already enlisted the help of their in-house aftermarket company to give it added flair.

Mugen took the task and the result is a more aggressive and more powerful car that definitely gives the face lifted model some serious attitude.

Aesthetically, Mugen went and added new exterior components to the CR-Z, including a new carbon fiber bonnet, more aggressive fog lamps, a new carbon wing mirror, a large rear spoiler, modified bumpers and skirts, and a new set of 17" dark matte grey finished wheels.

Inside, the CR-Z was treated to new sports seats, new trim materials with blue accents and a boost gauge for the supercharger...

Wait, there’s a supercharger? Thanks to Mugen, there is!

So what happens when a supercharger kit is added to a 1.5-liter engine that produces 136 horsepower? Customers will be able to benefit from 40 extra ponies, netting them a total of 176 horsepower.

This Mugen-tuned CR-Z will only have 300 models built with each priced at £33,000, which is around $55,000 based on current exchange rates. Sales are expected to begin in November in Japan.

Driving up alongside the 2013 Accord in Honda’s line-up is the new 2014 Accord Plug-in Hybrid Sedan, a model which, according to Honda, will serve as the basis for a conventional hybrid version of the Accord Sedan. The new Accord PHEV will go on sale in early 2013 and will be produced in Sayama, Japan.

The Accord PHEV is powered by a 2.0-liter i-VTEC 4-cylinder engine that delivers a total of 137 HP combined with a powerful 124-kilowatt (kW) electric motor for a total output of 196 HP. The model can drive in pure electric mode for 10 to 15 miles and delivers a total driving range of over 500 miles.

The new hybrid version is based on the Touring trim level of standard Accord Sedan and will be distinguished by a weight-saving aluminum hood, 17-inch forged alloy wheels, and a unique front bumper.

2012 Honda CR-Z Hybrid Race Car

Honda is set to bring a new race car to the Super GT series in Japan and true to form, it’s a racing version of the the company’s resident hybrid hatch, the CR-Z.

Certainly, by one look at the car, you can pretty much surmise that this isn’t your ordinary CR-Z. Honda co-developed it with their in-house tuning company Mugen and they proceeded to build something that hopefully performs as good as it looks.

To enhance the car’s racing capabilities, Honda and Mugen enhanced a number of components on the car, including the suspension, rolling stock and aerodynamics.

Then, the attention was turned to its engine, which is to say that they completely modified it to be race-ready. Instead of its rather mundane standard power train, the CR-Z GT was fitted with a 2.8-liter twin-turbo V6 engine that comes with a competition-spec electric assist. Output has been limited to 300 horsepower on account of the car competing at the Super GT GT300 class.

We’re pretty excited to see how awesome-looking race car performs when it makes its debut in the fourth round of the 2012 Super GT series at the end of the month.

Ever since the official launch of the Honda CR-Z, it has been rumored that it would be followed by a Type R version. We haven’t heard anything else about the possible sports upgrade for the past few months, but now it seems the rumors have returned. The first rendering of the future car was inspired by the CR-Z Hybrid R Concept and we have to admit, it looks pretty cool.

The most powerful CR-Z currently offered by Honda is the iCF Mugen announced earlier this year. It uses a modified 1.5-liter engine that delivers a total of 173 HP - a significant improvement over the car’s standard 124 HP. It has also been announced that Mugen will offer a more powerful version for the CR-Z, but these two versions will play second and third to Honda’s new, more powerful Type-R model. Previous rumors suggest that the Type-R version will go up to 200hp, thanks to a 2.0 liter four-cylinder engine developing a total of 150 HP and a larger 50 HP electric motor. The result will be a sprint from 0 to 60 mph in less than 6 seconds and a top speed of 140mph.

2012 Honda CR-Z by Mugen

For six months, Mugen has lead us all to believe that their Honda CR-Z Concept was just for display purposes, wiping away any hopes of ever seeing a production model. Now it seems as though they have come around and officially confirmed that the Honda CR-Z by Mugen will indeed see the light of production day. It will be put on sale in February 2012, with prices in the UK starting at £23,000 or about $36,000 at the current exchange rates.

The production version Mugen CR-Z will use a supercharger and a remapped ECU to increase power for the 1.5L four cylinder engine to 197 HP and 158 lb-ft of torque, up from the standard 122 HP and 128 lb-ft of torque. Next to the extra power, customers will also have the opportunity to choose between a wide range of Mugen accessories, including stiffer springs and dampers, larger wheels, bigger brakes, and replacement carbon bonnet and doors.

Maybe it’s a coincidence that Honda has confirmed the production version Mugen CR-Z at the same time Toyota and Subaru debuted the GT 86 and BRZ, respectively, or maybe they are developing this model solely for viable competition. Let us know what you think in the comments section below.

2012 Honda CR-Z iCF Mugen

The 2012 Honda CR-Z Mugen is beginning to take shape with at least one special edition model already being announced. The 2012 CR-Z iCF Mugen is being prepared by Honda U.K., promising the kind of performance capabilities that are befitting of Mugen’s fine-tuning.

For now, the only details that have surfaced regarding the CR-Z iCF Mugen is that it will carry a modified 1.5-liter engine that comes with an added centrifugal forced air induction system and a remapped ECU that takes the output of the hot hatch to an impressive 173 horsepower. This improved powertrain system allows the car to hit 0-62 mph in just 6.1 seconds while boasting of a top speed of 130 mph.

There doesn’t appear to be any final declarations as to how many of these cars will be sold by Honda UK Mugen dealers in the coming future. But for those interested to know how much a piece will sell for, Honda has announced that one model will carry a price tag of £24,000, which is around $37,200 based on current exchange rates.

2011 Honda CR-Z by Eibach Springs

Here’s another Honda CR-Z that made a SEMA comeback after its debut at the 2010 SEMA Auto Show.

Courtesy of Eibach Springs, this 2011 CR-Z was retooled and modified to become the kind of car everybody has always known the CR-Z could become. The look of the CR-Z hybrid suggests the extensive work Eibach Springs did to make it look the way it does. Among the added elements on the exterior are a C-West aero kit, a Mugen spoiler, an elaborate paint scheme and graphics, a new suspension program courtesy of Eibach, and a big brake kit from Stoptech. Inside, the standard features of the CR-Z were taken out in favor of a complete racing set-up that includes Sparco seats and a full roll bar.

But the most important order of business involving this project was taking out the original hybrid drivetrain of the CR-Z and replacing it with a 2.4-liter K24 four-cylinder engine from an Acura TSX. This new engine produces 280 horsepower and gets some extra help from K&N with a new intake system. Seeing as the CR-Z’s original IMA hybrid system is made up of a 1.5-liter engine combined with an electric motor that provides a total of 124 horsepower and 131 lb/ft of torque, we’re thinking that 280 ponies is a very significant upgrade. But there’s more.

According to some folks from Eibach Springs, this particular CR-Z will still receive a supercharger after SEMA, which means that when all is said and done, it’s going to pack way more than just 280 horsepower.

2011 Honda CR-Z α Black Label Edition

Honda has launched a special edition CR-Z "α · Black label (Alpha Black Label)" on the Japanese market. This model comes equipped with alloy wheels and a black interior, among other improvements. It will be offered in seven different exterior colors and will be priced from 2,510,000 yen or about $32,000 at the current exchange rates.

Honda has opted for a black interior in order to create a sense of deep calm and advanced quality black-themed coordination (front seats, door linings, meter visor and the shift boot). The model is also equipped with 16" lightweight aluminum-coated wheels painted in metallic pewter gray.

Nothing has changed under the hood so the hybrid CR-Z will still come with an IMA hybrid system made up of a 1.5 Liter gas burning engine combined with an electric motor. The electric motor provides an additional 14 HP for a grand total of 124 HP and 131 lb-ft of torque.

2011 Honda Insight Hybrid Rally Car by Oaktec

Since time immemorial, we always thought that the whole point of auto racing was to determine which of the competing cars is the fastest among the lot. That simple premise has been set in stone since the olden days so we figure that it wouldn’t change anytime soon. But banning a car from competition because its "too fast" against its competitors? That doesn’t sit too well with us.

The car we’re talking about is the Oaktec Honda Insight Hybrid Rally Car, a gas-electric eco sports car that competes - or was supposed to compete - in the Formula 1000 rally championship. The only problem was that its rivals lodged a complaint for its withdrawal because the car was too fast for them.

Turns out, the problem stems from its tuned gas-electric hybrid system, which easily achieves 100 mph when driven at cruise control and its unique Bosch-sourced CVT automatic transmission. Furthermore, the system allows the car to compete while running at 82 mph, a staggering number considering that the second best car returns only 65 mph.
