2017 Honda Civic Type R - Driven (Again)
The Honda Civic Type R has quite a legacy to its name, though none of it happened on American soil. Thankfully, that’s changed for 2017 as Honda has finally brought the Type R Stateside. In fact, its turbocharged engine is made in Ohio before being shipped to Wiltshire, England for assembly in the car. That’s right, this Japanese hot hatch has an American heart and is born in Britain. How’s that for multi-cultural? But more than that, the Type R’s appearance on U.S. soil means we finally have the chance to compare it to its fiercest rivals – the Ford Focus RS, Subaru WRX STI, and Volkswagen Golf R.
As it turns out, I’ve driven each of the competitors. Each are immensely fun and worthy of loads of respect over their engineering and outright impressive performance. The Type R joins those ranks with the same impressive level of technical wizardry and high-tech manufacturing techniques. I’ll dive into some of that, along with comparing it to the RS, Subi, and Golf R. It will be a fun ride, so read along.

2017 Honda Civic Type R – Driven
Performance vehicles are pushing the envelope beyond the imagination these days. Insane horsepower numbers and bleeding-edge technology contribute to ridiculous lap times and sub-four-second sprints to 60 mph. But more often than not, these all-out performance machines – think Chevrolet Corvette, Jaguar F-Type, and Porsche Cayman – are too compromised for daily living and cost a significant chunk of change. But imagine combining the impressive performance of a two-seater coupe with the functionality of a five-door hatchback and a reasonable price. That’s exactly what that hot hatch segment does. And now for the 2017 model year, Honda has launched its all-new Civic Type R. What’s more, Honda is bringing it to America for the first time.
Based on the new 10th-generation Honda Civic, the new Type R adds power, a sophisticated suspension system, and functional aero to the family-friendly Civic hatchback. It’s like having cake and eating it, too. Now, the Civic Type R has some stiff competition. The 350-horsepower Ford Focus RS is the reigning performance king and the Volkswagen Golf R is the grown-up’s idea of a performance-minded hatchback. And if having a hatchback isn’t a priority but hitting the rally circuit is, there’s always the Subaru WRX STI. The Civic Type R sort of carves its own niche in the segment with an outlandish design, heavily bolstered front buckets, and the lowest starting price of the bunch, but mixes it with only 306 horsepower and the lack of all-wheel drive. To find out how the Civic Type R recipe tastes, Honda flew me to Washington State for time on a private racetrack and scenic drives near the Olympic National Forest. Here’s what I found.

2017 - 2020 Honda Civic Type R
The interwebz have been bustling over Honda’s all-new 2017 Civic Type R, and for good reason. Not only is the hot hatch better than the previous version, it marks the first time a Honda Type R product will be sold in the United States. The Civic Type R takes advantage of the new, tenth-generation Civic’s chassis, while adding an improved suspension system over the outgoing Type R. Drive modes change the hatchback’s attitude via variable-rate steering, throttle response, and dampers. The familiar 2.0-liter VTEC turbo-four returns almost unchanged, but comes mated to a new six-speed manual gearbox with new rev-matching system. And like before, the Type R sends power to its front wheels only.
The go-fast goodies are matched with an aggressive styling. A huge wing, chin splitter, and air scoops all play into the sporty design. Production kicks off in the summer of 2017 with deliveries starting in the fall. Like all tenth-generation Civics, the Type R hails from Honda’s U.K. manufacturing plant in Swindon, England. Pricing starts in the mid-$30,000 range.

2017 Honda Civic Type R Black Edition
There’s been a lot of excitement surrounding the new Honda Civic Type R, largely because it’s finally coming to the U.S. But what’s gotten lost in the understandable hype surrounding the new Civic hot hatch is the fact that it isn’t scheduled to hit dealerships at least until the latter half of 2017. For now, the predecessor to the 2017 model is still holding court, or at least just finished doing so since the last of current Civic Type R models has just come off the production line. And like most models that pull at our emotional heart strings, Honda has decided to commemorate the end of the current Civic Type R by launching a special edition version called the Black Edition.
The model is formally known as the Civic Type R Black Edition, but let’s not get into any debates about that. The important thing is that it’s limited to just 100 units and with the how the hot hatch Civic is trending up in the eyes of collectors, it has the potential to be a diamond in the rough and turn into a sought-after car years from now.
For now though, the Civic Type R Black Edition is what it is. It has a number of extra upgrades and features that sets it apart from all other Civic Type Rs that came before it. It also has features the same power and performance credentials, thanks in large part to a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that packs an incredible 310 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, enough to propel it from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.7 seconds before peaking at a top speed of 167 mph. That kind of performance even took the Civic Type R to the top of lap time records for front-wheel drive cars at the Nurburgring before it was usurped by the Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport S.
It’s safe to say that the Honda Civic Type R is one of the purest performance cars on the road today. Now it’s getting its own special edition model? Evidently, Honda knows how to end the production of the model on a high note.

2016 Honda CR-Z Alpha Final Label
The Honda CR-Z came to be in 2010, when it joined the Insight model in the company’s hybrid lineup. Developed on a similar recipe and powered by a small-displacement gasoline engine and an electric motor, the CR-Z essentially replaced the first-gen Insight, which had lost its three-door configuration when its replacement arrived in 2009. The CR-Z was also marketed as a spiritual successor to the CR-X, a sport compact that Honda sold between 1983 and 1991. Although it was received with great enthusiasm, the CR-Z soon began to struggle on various markets and dwindling sales prompted Honda to halt production at the end of 2016 without developing a successor.
With the hybrid sports coupe set to get the axe in a few months, Honda is now offering one last iteration of the CR-Z. Dubbed Alpha Final Label, the last limited-edition to leave the Suzuka factory will be sold in Japan only. Far from featuring any significant upgrades, the Final Label is just a slightly polished CR-Z with two new exterior paints, bespoke wheels, and minor touches inside the cabin. The limited-edition vehicle will be sold in Japan only, which is yet another sign that the CR-Z is struggling to meet its global targets.
A replacement is rumored to arrive sometime in 2018, but until that happens, let’s have a closer look at the model set to put an end to the first-generation CR-Z.

With the European version of the latest-generation Civic having been launched in 2011, it sure took Honda long enough to bring out the Type R model. After countless teasers and what seemed like neverending testing sessions in various types of camouflage, the new Civic Type R has been finally launched at the Geneva Motor Show, along with the first official information about the model.
In case you were expecting an outrageous body kit, more than 300 horsepower and more torque than any other previous Type R model in history, your assumptions have been more than met by Honda, making the long wait until the reveal almost worth it. If anyone can truly make a sporting front-wheel-drive model that would be the engineers from Honda, and at least on paper the new Type R looks like an impressive piece of kit.

Honda’s newly refreshed 2014 Civic Coupe Si is now set to roll out of dealer showrooms, and with the added tech, upgraded powertrain and revised looks, Honda hopes the Si will push the car past its already impressive sales numbers for 2013.
While the Civic Si has been topping the list of cheap car thrills for more than two decades now, there have been complaints about the car lacking ‘spice.’ Thankfully, it seems Honda has spiced up the recipe to bring new life into the car, especially in the Si trim.
Added power, a re-tuned sport suspension, an upgraded interior and a new exterior look are among the changes for 2014. Outside, the Civic Si sports a reshaped front bumper and grille with a more aggressive appearance. Reshaped front finders carry the aggression rearward toward a revamped rear fascia that includes an air diffuser and a mildly boy-racer wing.
Things are still familiar inside the Civic with minor changes only recognizable by Civic fans. The Si trim gets a new unique seat fabric with contrasting red bottoms and black bolsters and the dash gets a faux carbon-fiber surround for the center stack.
The best changes are relegated under hood, as the 2.4-liter I-4 now produces four more horsepower and four pound-feet of torque to total 205 and 174, respectively. The Civic’s six-speed manual returns unaltered and as the Si’s only transmission choice. Despite the slight increase in power, the 2.4-liter still returns the same 22 mpg city, 31 mpg highway and 25 mpg combined.
Updated 10/14/2014: Honda announced prices for the 2015 Civic SI Coupe which is now on sale at Honda dealers nationwide. The model remains unchanged and comes with a starting price of $22,890.

The Honda Civic Type R is one of those cars that can be painful to talk about. As the last bastion of true Honda Performance, the Type R makes every enthusiast drool and dream. But like so many Japanese rockets, the Civic Type R has never been a U.S. import.
Now with the Geneva Motor Show coming up next month, Honda has seen fit to tease us with more forbidden fruit; the concept model for the new Civic Type R.
All we have currently is this artist’s concept drawing which is far more aggressive and interesting than we ever imagined a Civic could be. The entire car looks like it was designed to be racecar, and then someone stripped off the sponsorship stickers.
Massive tires, extreme aero pieces and a full body kit are all part of the new Type R design.

We told you that Honda and Forza Motorsports had teamed up to create a unique car based on a design that was submitted in the game, and now we have seen the fruits of their labor. The winning entry for the Forza Motorsport Civic Si Design Contest has been built and was displayed at the 2014 Chicago Auto Show last week. This represents one of the first times that Forza has ever created a real car based on an in-game design.
The winning design was created by Tiffany Labedez from Phoenix, Arizona and features a fairly striking black on red color scheme. Both the hood and the trunk lid are painted black, and the underside of the spoiler is also black, but the outside is red. It’s a cool effect.
There is a trio i-VTEC logos down each side as well as a collection of graphics that include flames, mud splatters and tire tread. It sounds busy, but somehow it works.
If you are the proud owner of an Xbox One and Forza Motorsports 5, you can grab the free Honda Legends Car Pack today. The pack features the new 2014 Civic Si Coupe as well as the Mugen-tuned 1984 Honda CRX and the 1994 Prelude.
Honda unveiled the CR-Z in 2010 and for the 2013 model year, it revised its resident sport hybrid with a new front bumper design and a revised grille. The biggest changes however, took place under the hood, where the 1.5-liter, gasoline engine was tweaked to deliver an extra seven horsepower and the electric motor an extra six horsepower.
For the 2014 model year, the CR-Z remains unchanged, except a slightly changed price figure. We were really hoping for a few more tweaks to the powertrain, but at least Honda kept the CR-Z as the only hybrid model with a manual transmission option.
Customers can choose between two different versions: the base CR-Z priced from $19,9952 and the EX trim with a starting price of $21,840. Both models are offered with a manual transmission as standard, but buyers can opt for a CVT. Additionally, buyers can opt for a navigation package in the EX package that increases the price to $23,990.
Updated 10/08/2014: Honda announced prices for the 2015 CR-Z which goes on sale on-sale today with no updates over the 2014 model year. Prices will range from $20,145 for the standard model equipped with the six-speed manual transmission up to $24,140 for the CR-Z EX CVT with Navi.

Honda unveiled the CR-Z back in 2010, but it looks like the little sports coupe is going to receive its first facelift treatment a little earlier than anticipated. The new CR-Z made its official debut at the 2012 Paris Auto Show and will go on sale in January 2013.
The updated CR-Z has received subtle revisions to the exterior and interior, with the biggest changes being made under the hood. The 1.5-liter petrol engine has been tweaked to deliver an extra 7 horsepower and the electric motor an extra 6 horsepower. With a total of 137 horsepower, the CR-Z will now sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 9 seconds (down from 9.7 seconds).
The new CR-Z has also received a Plus Sport (S+) boost system that delivers increased acceleration for up to ten seconds when the battery is more than 50% charged.
UPDATE 11/19/2012: Honda U.S.A. has announced prices for the 2013 CR-Z that will go on sale November 21, 2012. Prices will start from $19,975 for the standard version and from $21,655 for the EX version.

If anyone ever had any doubt that the Honda CR-Z is an incredible vehicle, despite its hybrid powertrain, then they should be checked into the hospital. The CR-Z drives and feels like any other sports car on the market, maybe even better, but for those that are doubtful, check out the new CR-Z introduced by Honda Performance Development at the 2012 SEMA Auto Show.
The Honda HPD Supercharged CR-Z Concept continues with the improvements introduced last year, but is even better with a few enhancements to improve acceleration, handling, and stopping. For starters, the CR-Z’s IMA hybrid system gets bumped up from 124 HP and 131 lb-ft of torque to a total of 185 HP and 169 lb-ft of torque. In addition to this bump in power, the CR-Z also gets a new sport exhaust and a new sport suspension. The concept sits on a new set of wheels wrapped in high performance tires combined with sport brakes. Then there’s that incredible red exterior paint finish that just screams, "Look at me!"
It may only be a concept, but there’s always hope for production when it comes to cars like this.
Since the NSX will be headed Stateside as an Acura, we got the Acura NSX Concept when the Detroit Auto Show opened its doors. Other markets like Europe and Japan, however, will be given a Honda to serve as their NSX base, so the Geneva Motor Show will find itself with a Honda NSX Concept to preview their production supercar.
The Honda NSX Concept will feature the same design language and the same technology as the Acura NSX Concept. It will be powered by the company’s next generation VTEC 3.5-liter V6 with direct-injection engine which is then combined with a dual clutch transmission and a range of new technologies, including the innovative Sport Hybrid SH-AWD (Super Handling All Wheel Drive) hybrid system. This system combines a unique 2 Electric Motor Drive Unit with a bilateral torque adjustable control system that allows the car to instantly generate negative or positive torque to the front wheels during cornering. Honda hasn’t released any details on the final output of this setup, but rumors say it will go up to about 400 HP, or just enough to sprint the car from 0 to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds.
The production Honda NSX will be unveiled in the next three years.

After years of speculations, Honda is finally taking the first steps in offering a successor for the very prominent NSX supercar with its first concept version revealed at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show. The company has promised that a production version will follow in the next three years and will be manufactured at the company’s plant in Ohio.
Not only does the concept revealed in Detroit preview the future NSX supercar, it also presents the first application of Acura’s innovative new Sport Hybrid SH-AWD (Super Handling All Wheel Drive) system. This system combines a unique 2 Electric Motor Drive Unit with a bilateral torque adjustable control system that allows the car to instantly generate negative or positive torque to the front wheels during cornering. The company then throws in their next generation VTEC 3.5-liter V6 with direct-injection and a dual clutch transmission with built-in electric motor.
"This Sport Hybrid SH-AWD system will make NSX the ultimate expression of Acura’s idea to create synergy between man and machine," said Takanobu Ito, president and CEO of Honda Motor Co., Ltd. "The NSX will make the driver one with the car to enhance dynamic driving abilities without getting in the way."
"Like the first NSX, we will again express high performance through engineering efficiency," added Ito, who led the development of Acura’s first NSX supercar. "In this new era, even as we focus on the fun to drive spirit of the NSX, I think a supercar must respond positively to environmental responsibilities."

Updated 04/25/2012: While until now we have seen the new Acura NSX sports car in a gray exterior paint, for the Beijing Auto Show the NSX has dressed a very cool red paint.
Ever since the official launch of the Honda CR-Z, it has been rumored that it would be followed by a Type R version. We haven’t heard anything else about the possible sports upgrade for the past few months, but now it seems the rumors have returned. The first rendering of the future car was inspired by the CR-Z Hybrid R Concept and we have to admit, it looks pretty cool.
The most powerful CR-Z currently offered by Honda is the iCF Mugen announced earlier this year. It uses a modified 1.5-liter engine that delivers a total of 173 HP - a significant improvement over the car’s standard 124 HP. It has also been announced that Mugen will offer a more powerful version for the CR-Z, but these two versions will play second and third to Honda’s new, more powerful Type-R model. Previous rumors suggest that the Type-R version will go up to 200hp, thanks to a 2.0 liter four-cylinder engine developing a total of 150 HP and a larger 50 HP electric motor. The result will be a sprint from 0 to 60 mph in less than 6 seconds and a top speed of 140mph.
For six months, Mugen has lead us all to believe that their Honda CR-Z Concept was just for display purposes, wiping away any hopes of ever seeing a production model. Now it seems as though they have come around and officially confirmed that the Honda CR-Z by Mugen will indeed see the light of production day. It will be put on sale in February 2012, with prices in the UK starting at £23,000 or about $36,000 at the current exchange rates.
The production version Mugen CR-Z will use a supercharger and a remapped ECU to increase power for the 1.5L four cylinder engine to 197 HP and 158 lb-ft of torque, up from the standard 122 HP and 128 lb-ft of torque. Next to the extra power, customers will also have the opportunity to choose between a wide range of Mugen accessories, including stiffer springs and dampers, larger wheels, bigger brakes, and replacement carbon bonnet and doors.
Maybe it’s a coincidence that Honda has confirmed the production version Mugen CR-Z at the same time Toyota and Subaru debuted the GT 86 and BRZ, respectively, or maybe they are developing this model solely for viable competition. Let us know what you think in the comments section below.
The hybrid craze has gone to new levels and everyone wants in on the action. Unlucky for those that are late in joining the game, Mugen has come around with yet another version of the Honda CRZ, promising to transform the vehicle into one "hot hybrid hatch." Their newest package comes with a killer supercharger that takes the CRZ to a greater level of performance, and possibly a better fuel economy as well.
The Honda CRZ Mugen will still come with its standard 1.5L four cylinder engine, but will get the boost in power from a new supercharger. Standard outputs for the CRZ come in at 113 HP and 107 lb-ft of torque for just the engine, while adding the standard hybrid package will get those outputs up to 122 HP and 128 lb-ft of torque. Mugen has taken their upgrade a step further by developing their own electronic package that, together with the supercharged engine, will deliver a total of 197 HP and 181 lb-ft of torque. Just like there’s no sex in the champagne room, there’s no slacking over at Mugen’s place either.
Mugen takes their package a step further by adding induction and exhaust upgrades that they hope will improve the hatch’s current stats of 38mpg and 117g/km CO2. They have also added front and rear five-stage adjustable dampers, bigger brakes, and lightweight 17in forged Mugen GP alloys. Aesthetically, the CRZ will get Mugen-spec front and rear bumpers, a large rear wing, and side skirts. The company has also promised a "large reduction in overall weight."
The Honda CRZ Mugen will make its first grand appearance at the 2011 Goodwood Festival of Speed in July. As of right now, it is just a one-off prototype, but Mugen says they are willing to offer it in a limited number production if there is enough interest. At the very least, we should be able to order some of the parts used as aftermarket supplies.
UPDATE 05/18/2011: Mugen has unveiled the first official images of the CR-Z Mugen before the car’s official debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. While the tuner has yet to say anything about the official specifications, Colin Whittamore from MUGEN Euro said: "We’ve retained the three driving modes from the standard car and economyranges from 50+mpg in ’eco’ mode to mid-30 mpg when tapping into the supercharged power in a special ’MUGEN’ mode."
UPDATE 06/13/2011: The new Mugen CR-Z has finally made its video debut with a rather impressive promotional video. Honda has also announced that, in the first tests, the Mugen CR-Z has completed a 0-60mph time of around that of the Civic Type R (which sprints from 0 to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds).
UPDATE 08/01/11: Since many of you were wondering if the CR-Z RR Concept would ever be put into production, Mugen has officially announced that the concept has been built for show purposes only and there are currently no plans for further production.
Ever since the Honda CR-Z hit the market, it’s been the subject of numerous tuning projects, be it aerodynamic, performance, or a combination of both. The strong appeal of Honda’s hybrid sports hatch is a testament to the car’s appeal and easy-to-upgrade nature, where only a few other cars can attest. This time around, the CR-Z was given a ground aerodynamic package courtesy of Japanese tuning firm, Noblesse.
Among the notable additions to the CR-Z include front and rear bumper aprons, side skirts, a new rear diffuser, a large roof wing, a lightweight carbon fiber hood, underbody aero parts, a sport exhaust system, and a new set of alloy wheels.
All the changes have turned the CR-Z into a meaner and more aggressive looking hybrid sports hatch, a testament to the ease with which a tuning firm can upgrade the hybrid sports car from a standard-looking hatchback to a car that is sure to catch tons of attention out on the streets.
Ever since its official launch, the Honda CR-Z has received prize after prize, including being named Japan’s Car of the Year. However despite these recognitions, sales still aren’t as Honda might have expected. This had lead the company to believe that hybrid cars just aren’t appreciated enough for the value they offer, so they have prepared an alternative that might make a little more money for them. The new Turbo version will drop the hybrid powertrain in favor of a regular engine offered in two different versions, with one going up to 200 HP.
The first rumors for this vehicle report that the future Honda CR-Z Turbo will take its design inspiration from the Honda CR-Z R Concept (pictured above) unveiled in November at the SEMA Show. The R Concept featured a more aggressive front grille, a huge rear wing, a lowered ride, and bigger wheels that, if taken for the Turbo, would make it look like a car we could work with.

Could the Mazda MX-5 Cup Car be outrun by a hybrid out on the track? It’s quite possible with Honda Performance Development’s CR-Z Racer powered by the same hybrid system as found in Honda’s road-going SEMA child, the CR-Z Hybrid R Concept. This system combines a turbocharger and an upgraded Integrated Motor Assist hybrid system that, together, produce 200 horsepower and 175 lb-ft. of torque.
In addition to the modifications made to the hybrid setup, Honda also added a performance clutch, limited-slip differential, a ‘circuit-tuned’ suspension, upgraded brakes, and some aerodynamic components. We can’t get past that huge rear wing and those graphics.
The interior of the CR-Z Racer has also been primed for a race with the use of a single front seat, a roll cage, and other bare bones features.
The two concepts shown at the 2010 SEMA Show are not intended for sale, but Honda Performance Development does plan on sharing the racing potential of the CR-Z Racer at the 25 Hours of Thunderhill endurance race in December. We smell a money-making opportunity in the works? Well, if the Racer is any good, of course.
