Video of the Day: 2017 Honda Civic Type R vs 2005 Acura NSX
In one corner we’ve got the 1991 - 2005 Acura NSX; in the other corner, we’ve got the 2017 Honda Civic Type R. What do these two cars have in common other than coming from the same place and sharing common roots? Well, not much. The NSX was rear-wheel drive and rocked out less than 300 horsepower while the new Type R delivers as much as 320 ponies to the front wheels. Oh, and don’t forget that the NSX doesn’t have the same engine configuration as the Civic. Nope, it’s mounted midship compared to the more common frontal location of the Civic’s beastly little four-cylinder. Both cars are legendary in their own right.
The Civic Type R is the first one to roll off the production line and straight into U.S. Market. It’s also the most powerful production Civic Type R ever made. The NSX is, well, it’s an NSX. It was unbelievably reliable (as all Honda’s typically are) it looked amazing, and despite it’s relatively lower power output, it had world-beating performance thanks to a lightweight chassis and crazy aerodynamics. It even had a manual steering rack folks. So, what did all of that compute to? Well, it could beat the hell out of Ferrari at the time for less than $80,000. 2014 has been quite the eventful year in the auto industry, and the best part is we still have December left before the calendar flips to 2015. But since we’re celebrating Thanksgiving today, we wanted to take this opportunity to give thanks to some of the highlights of 2014. It was a long and exhaustive list that we somehow managed to whittle down to five things we’re thankful for.
All items on the list were newsworthy at one point or another during the year, but the things on this list didn’t make it simply because they made news in 2014. Rather, the items on this list have long-term impacts on the evolution of the auto industry moving forward. Whether it was the development of a new engine or the arrival and imminent departure of two supercars, 2014 really had them all.

The Goodwood Festival of Speed always attracts some of the year’s finest supercars to take to its famous hill climb. This year is no different, as Honda has announced that it will not only be in attendance at the festival, it’s also booking its ticket to run the new NSX supercar on what is arguably the world’s most famous hillclimb, providing the capacity crowd in attendance an up-close look at the new supercar.
The NSX’s attendance at Goodwood will harken back to the days when its predecessor was a fixture at the Festival of Speed, including back in 1993 when 10 NSX models were showcased at the inaugural Goodwood festival.
It seems appropriate now that over 20 years later, the NSX will return at Goodwood in in its latest incarnation, and one that will definitely hold court and be one of the star attractions at this year’s festival.
That’s how the NSX rolls these days.

One of the most awaited supercars is no doubt the 2016 NSX (or Acura NSX, depending on the market). The NSX has been up and down so many times, that at some point we had no idea what to believe anymore, but once the 2012 NSX Concept was unveiled it became pretty clear that the company was serious about getting the name back on the market.
It looks like people were very impressed by the NSX, as Honda has received an unprecedented demand for the supercar. This made the company to open a pre-order bank for the NSX and any customer depositing a total of £5,000 ($7,600 at the current exchange rates) can be among the first customers to get it. Not until 2015, unfortunately.
Honda already received a total of 25 deposits for the NSX, so maybe it will rethink its decision of offering the NSX as a limited edition.

A while ago a mysterious Acura sports car was caught on the movie set for The Avengers. Now, rumors about that mystery prototype suggest that some of its design elements will be used for the long rumored Honda NSX supercar. Recently, the Acura prototype was spotted in Central Park, New York, with actor Robert Downey Jr at the wheel.
This may all just be a coincidence, but this new mysterious supercar concept has befallen our eyes at the same time Honda CEO, Takanobu Ito, confirmed that the next NSX would be a high-performance exotic sports car. Then there’s a source leaking information, saying that "Honda wants to build a supercar that breaks the mould while creating a new technological package." The company is currently working on a 3.5-3.7 liter VTEC V6 engine in combination with a twin electric motor set-up powered by lithium-ion batteries. This motor will have a plug-in recharge system for a small electric-only range, giving it great amounts of torque.
Another source told AutoExpress that the Dual Note 4WD Hybrid Concept from the 2001 Tokyo Motor Show was the first glimpse at the technology that will underpin the NSX. This concept was powered by a 3.5 liter V6 engine which sent power to the rear wheels, while in-wheel electric motors sent power to the front. This setup delivered an output of over 400 HP.
The Honda NSX will go on sale in 2014 and will be priced from about £65,000 or about $100,000 at the current exchange rates.
Trying to decipher the future of the NSX name is like watching a never ending tennis match. Honda’s building it; it’s never going to happen; just kidding, we’re building it again; nope, not going to happen. As exhausting as this back and forth battle is, every time news comes out on the future of the vehicle, our ears perk up and take notice. Well, turns out, the light is green again because at the start of the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, Honda President and CEO, Takanobu Ito, confirmed that the company has started working on a new sportscar in the mold of the iconic NSX. They forgot to mention the word again, but they did say that the new model would be radically different from its predecessor with an improved power-to-weight-ratio.
"I spent part of my early career at Honda developing the NSX, and specifically the aluminum body. I really enjoyed that experience, and learned much, so it is my wish that Honda engineers have the experience of developing a sportscar like the NSX in the future. Within Honda, our engineers are already looking at developing such a car."
For the new NSX, Honda will focus on improving the vehicle’s engine output, as well as in reducing the car’s total weight so that it delivers a better power-to-weight ratio. The company, like everyone else, will also work on improving the vehicle’s fuel economy.
"Our recent efforts have been focused on fuel efficiency, and that perhaps gives the impression Honda is behind with pushing the brand image of sportiness, but let me assure you that is not the case. We will address that impression with our new generations of cars."
Maybe we are just gluttons for punishment, but we’ll continue to follow this story to see if it holds any water. Hopefully it will stick this time around.
In 1991, Acura shocked the exotic car world with the introduction of the NSX, a supercar that stood up to models like the Ferrari 328. However, as good things can’t last forever, the NSX was discontinued in 2005 due to slow sales. Of course, it didn’t take long before people started talking about when a successor would show up, especially considering the fact that the NSX was said to go into production a few years back, but was denied on several occasions.
However, rumor mills don’t just shut down and the latest information churning them is that an NSX successor has always been in the cards. At first it was believed to come out in 2009, but the economic crisis made sure that didn’t happen so this future model is still a few years away. It was first thought to be powered by a 4.5L V10 engine , but Honda President Takanobu Ito has already chatted it up with Automotive News and stated that the future NSX won’t come with a V10 engine. The idea for an engine that size was actually dropped in 2008, then the company decided that the car should be environmentally friendly and still fun to drive. "That’s the kind of sports car we want to make," Ito said.
The future NSX will be positioned as a high-performance counterpart to the two-seat Honda CR-Z sporty hybrid. According to Ito, the company is working very hard on the new car and now rumors are suggesting that it will go hybrid. We’ll get official confirmation of whatever will be under that hood eventually.

UPDATE 10/05/2011: A new Acura Supercar Concept may be our first glimpse at the future NSX. Sources are stating that this concept will mark the beginning of the NSX as the next supercar will borrow design elements from it. Other sources have also told AutoExpress that the new supercar may benefit from one of a couple of different engine setups. UPDATE 12/30/2011: British magazine, AutoExpress, is offering few new details about the future NSX to pacify the masses. The new NSX will be a 400bhp four-wheel-drive hybrid model and will be heavily based on the concept car seen on the set of the new Avengers movie. The hybrid system will combine a 3.5-liter V6 engine driving one axle with a pair of in-wheel electric motors driving the other ones. This system will offer a total of 400 HP and will propel the FWD NSX from 0 to 60 mph in under 5 seconds.
The biggest news offered by AutoExpress is that the NSX will also be offered as a roadster, but no other details about this model were provided.

RIP NSX. Honda announced today that the NSX program is dead. Honda CEO Takeo Fukui announced the move in a speech that all development of the car would be canceled. It seems that the company has changed its previous statement. Back in October he told Autocar that, "the new supercar is necessary for Honda". Honda will now focus its efforts on (gasp) hybrid cars.
This is a bad time for car enthusiasts, but we kinda knew this was coming. Halo cars are fun, but in times of deep economic troubles, retrenchment strategies are aplenty and come quick. The first to go are the low-volume fun cars. The NSX was not the first to be chopped, and it won’t be the last (now taking odds on the Lexus LFA.)
If there is any hope to come from this news is that we all know how efficient Honda is. We’ve seen the development cars for the NSX, which means that Honda has a large engineering and financial investment in the V10 sports car. So we can all hope (fingers crossed) that when the world economy recovers, Honda will be quick to use a lot of the technology developed in this NSX program to quickly bring a supercar to the market.
