2017 Honda Sports EV Concept
When Honda debuted the Urban EV Concept at the 2017 Frankfurt Auto Show, I was quick to scrutinize the brand for building something so weird, but as I looked at it more, it began to grow on me. And, it’s a good thing it did because that thing is slated for production for the European market sometime in 2019. And, to really top it off, Honda showed up to the 2017 Tokyo Auto Show with a sports car that looks quite familiar – the Honda Sports EV Concept. Following suit with the previous concept, it carries the same general styling cues in a futuristic but feasible package. Of course, it’s a sports car, so it doesn’t have that love seat up front, but it is quite sporty for what it is, and it could just as easily shift into production thanks to being built upon the same platform used for the last concept.
Unlike the last concept, however, we have next to no information. And, Honda didn’t even take the time to release interior shots of the concept either. We can tell that it has that massive display screen and that it’s missing the couch, but outside of that, we can’t see much. But, that doesn’t mean that this little battery-powered sports car should be overlooked. Out of all the EV sports car concepts we’ve seen, this is the one we really want to see become a reality, so let’s take a good look and see what’s crackalackin.
Honda’s first mass market fuel cell car has taken a lot of different forms as it evolves into something that you can buy at a dealership. The first prototypes were shown all of the way back in 1999, then there were a number of test vehicles build from there. Another concept showed up in 2006, followed by the FCX Clarity in 2008, which was produced and leased in very limited numbers for research purposes. Then Honda showed off a concept of an actual production model at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, and the name of the project changed from FCX to FCV.
This represents a change from “Fuel Cell eXperimental” to “Fuel Cell Vehicle”, signaling that Honda is finally serious about putting the car into production, even if it does have a tremendously uncreative name. Now Honda is announcing that a production-ready version of the car will debut at the Tokyo Motor Show, along with a real name, and a few teaser photos have come out as well. The car has been toned down from the concept, obviously, but the evolution of the model is still evident in the new design. And although Toyota might has beaten Honda to market with its own fuel cell car, this is still a very important vehicle.
Updated 10/29/2015: Honda dropped the official details on the next generation Clarity Fuel Cell Vehicle during its official debut at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show. Sales in Japan will begin in early 2016, with Europe to follow later in the year.

The 2013 SEMA Auto Show is just around the corner, which means that a lot of autophiles in the country are gearing up for their annual pilgrimage to Las Vegas.
Meanwhile, over on the other side of the world, Japan is also preparing for its own auto show, and one manufacturer that’s already booked its ticket is Honda. At the event, the local automaker will present a new convertible concept that it hopes will translate into a production open-top sports-type-mini-vehicle.
The concept, called the S660, looks pretty similar to the EV-STER Concept that Honda introduced back in 2011 at the same event. The only difference is that the S660 will come with a traditional, albeit extremely small, 660 cc, three-cylinder turbocharged engine that is slated to produce 64 horsepower while being linked to a seven-speed CVT transmission.
It’s highly unlikely that the S660 will capture the imagination of speed freaks, but in fairness to Honda, whatever power the little sports coupe lacks, it sure as heck makes up for with a design that looks ready for production.
Too bad the car is anticipated to be a Japan-exclusive model, although a bigger version, possibly one that will come with an equally paltry 100-horsepower, 1.0-liter engine, could be available down the line for foreign markets.
Sure it’s no replacement for the axed S2000, but a cool concept nonetheless.

Honda announced the first details on its display lineup for the upcoming 2013 Tokyo Auto Salon and it looks quite promising. The coolest model announced for Tokyo is the S2000 Modulo Climax — an S2000-based concept model that features cutting-edge aeroform design and a chic interior coordinated in black and burgundy.
No other details have been provided, but it looks like the concept’s outward appearance is quite similar to the production version S2000, sans some minor updates. The interior, on the other hand, looks fully updated, with lots of leather used on the seats, dashboard and steering wheel. For the interior, Honda opted for a black and burgundy red combination, matching the red used on the exterior.
We expect the S2000 Modulo Climax to be a hybrid vehicle, but we will have full details on it in January 2013 when the model will make its official debut in Tokyo.
Ever since the Honda S2000 was dropped in 2009, rumors surrounding a a hybrid successor for the roadster have been buzzing. Turns out, those rumors may be true now that Honda has announced the EV-STER Concept at the 2011 Tokyo Auto Show. Could this be the beginning of the next small roadster? So far, signs point to yes. The Concept is being described as "a next-generation compact EV sports model, fun to drive while achieving excellent environmental performance." It is an all-electric vehicle that combines the pleasure of driving with zero CO2 emissions.
The new EV-STER Concept is made of carbon materials that help reduce the vehicle’s total weight. It is powered by an electric engine combined with a RWD system and a 10kWh lithium-ion battery that ensure a driving range of approximately 100 miles. The concept will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 5 seconds and will be capable of a top speed of 100 mph.
The concept uses an easy-to-operate twin-lever steering that was adopted for the thorough pursuit of the joy of driving. Moreover, the new concept model enables the driver to make his/her own adjustments to some vehicle characteristics such as motor output and suspension settings, to embody the joy of maneuvering to the fullest extent.
UPDATE 12/15/11: Honda has officially announced that the EV-STER Concept has been green-lighted for production. The news comes courtesy of Auto Motor und Sport, who stated that Honda CEO Takanobu Ito has said that the roadster is headed to production and could be offered as early as next year in both standard gasoline and electric powertrains.

Honda has prepared a number of concept vehicles that it will introduce at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show. Now that we’re in the middle of the press days for the event, the Japanese automaker has finally unveiled their concept vehicles, including the Advanced Cruiser-X Concept, or AC-X.
A unique element of the AC-X is that it features two different drive modes. There’s the engine mode, which makes use of the installed internal combustion engine - 1.6-liter gasoline engine - and the electric drive system, drawing maximum performance out of the car. Then there’s the automatic mode, which pretty much lets the car do the engine mixing depending on the required load the car has at any point.
Under its hood, the AC-X will be powered by a hybrid powertrain that includes a 1.6-liter petrol engine that produces 127 horsepower and an electric motor that contributes significantly in increasing the output of the AC-X to 161 horsepower. According to Honda, the AC-X Concept is capable of running on pure electricity for around 30 miles at a respectable speed of 62 mph. When it’s run on a full fuel and motor set-up, that range increases all the way up to 620 miles.
Aesthetically, the four-door sedan concept comes with a futuristic front and rear set-up with the head and taillight configuration running the entire length of the front and the rear of the car, respectively. The concept also makes use of several aerodynamic components, including the front and rear bumpers, the side skirts, and the specially-designed alloy wheel configuration, all of which were put into place to provide low better handling and lower aerodynamic drag for the concept. Inside, the most noticeable feature of the AC-X is the absence of a traditional steering wheel.
We’re not sure how a pair of joysticks will work in driving a car like this, but we’re definitely intrigued at the possibilities.
This year’s Tokyo Motor Show has become a gathering for futuristic city car concepts that promote efficiency and sustainability. With that thought in mind, it was hardly a surprise to see Honda throwing their hat into the mix with the introduction of the Micro Commuter Concept.
Essentially, the Micro Commuter Concept is tiny three-seater (1+2) electric city car that promotes ease of mobility in a world that’s fast becoming denser and denser. The Micro Commuter Concept comes with some futuristic features that defy today’s expectations, including customizable exterior panels that allow owners to insert graphic sheet on their car. There’s also an interior display where occupants can use for communication. Moreover, the concept also relies on the same driving mechanics as another Tokyo-bound Honda attendee, the AC-X Concept: the dual-joystick controller.
As for the power train, the Micro Commuter Concept is powered by a 16.7 kW electric motor that produces 22 horsepower and is fueled by a 3.3 kWh lithium-ion battery. These numbers translate to a 0-60 km sprint time of 7.4 seconds with a pedestrian top speed of 37 mph and a range of 37 miles. Anytime the battery is low, charging of the Micro Commuter Concept will only take an hour and can be done on a 200V outlet.
The lights for the Detroit Auto Show haven’t even dimmed and already Honda is announcing its lineup of vehicles for the 2011 Tokyo Auto Salon starting Friday, January 14th to Sunday, January 16th, 2011. So far we gather that the line-up will include both automobiles and motorcycles, with the most impressive model being the TS-1X test study based on the CR-Z.
No details have been revealed on any of the models scheduled for Tokyo yet, but this image released by Honda reveals a matte black exterior paint with a revised front fascia, extended side skirts, and a massive rear spoiler for the TS-1X. Not bad for a test study, eh?
Also headed to Japan for the Tokyo Auto Show are accessorized production automobiles and motorcycles, along with a variety of specially designed vehicles. These vehicles include the Freed Spike caravan car, the Acty Truck and the Enepo generator special coloring editions, and the HSV-010 GT machine. On the motorcycle front, the most impressive appearance will be made by the RC212V, which competed in the MotoGP class races.
The Japanese automaker Honda is gearing up for the 2010 Tokyo Auto Salon later this week where they will unveil the Insight Sports Modulo Concept. Following the trend of sporty and practical factory tuned models, the Sport Modulo modified Insight is the world’s largest engine builder’s way of saying that even hybrid models can be fun. As it comes from the factory, the Honda hybrid comes with excellent aerodynamic numbers, a comfortable passenger compartment and a fun chassis all a reasonable price, this Sports Modulo Concept expresses the joy of driving through an “Exciting Eco” theme. The automotive re stylists have enhanced the Insight’s appearance with a new ground effects package made up of chiseled lines and larger air dams. With the Sports Modulo concept vehicle, Honda hopes to demonstrate what their in house customization program has to offer the next generation hybrid buyer.

With the 2010 Tokyo Auto Salon fast approaching, automakers are beginning to loosen up about what they will be bringing to the show. Honda has just released a series of sketches about their future concept that will make its debut on January 15th with the help of the aftermarket modification specialists at Access Modulo.
The Tokyo Auto Salon lineup will include a concept called the Insight Sports Modulo, based on the efficient gas electric hybrid Honda that will incorporate the same subtle yet aggressive style that was inaugurated at last year’s Tokyo Auto Salon by the S2000. There will also be another Insight concept that has been personalized by Freed Graceful, this other concept will be oriented towards fashion savvy women with its unique purple exterior color scheme complimented by a white interior. Not to mention one fun little orange box car from Happy Life.
The Japanese automaker Honda has just revealed three new vehicles at the Tokyo Motor Show. The EV-N, SKYDECK and CR-Z Concept made their world debuts at the 41st annual auto show. The EV-N is an electric concept model that is powered by a lithium ion battery pack, creating a a fun and easygoing relationship between person and car ushering in a new era of people friendly future mobility. The Skydeck is a six seater hybrid vehicle that transcends generational and lifestyle boundaries to offer multipurpose transport suitable for motorists of all ages. The last of Honda’s new offerings is powered by a compact, lightweight and efficient Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) hybrid system, the CR-Z Concept 2009 features a broad, low-slung stance with a short wheelbase creating an attractive 21st century vehicle that is both stylish and fuel efficient.
Those of us who can’t wait for the Tokyo Motor Show to open its doors in a week’s time, here’s a video that can satiate our appetites for the time being.
The video walk-around features a number of cars that will be unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show. Among those included in the video are the Toyota FT-86 Concept, the Honda CR-Z Hybrid Concept, the Nissan Leaf EV, the Mitsubishi PX-MiEV, and the Mazda Kiyora.
Now if you’re the type that can understand Japanese, then you’re in luck; you’ll be able to understand the video from beginning to end. But if you’re like a lot of us that don’t speak nor understand the language, then we can just admire the cars while not paying attention to the voice-over. Don’t worry, it can be done.
Looks like a regular next-generation van doesn’t it? The truth is, there’s nothing ordinary about Honda’s new concept MPV, the Skydeck.
The six-seater hybrid MPV, the Skydeck is the latest example of Honda’s versatile IMA technology. The car’s innovative design comes with a flat and see-through glass roof, a higher-than-usual rear-end, and scissor doors at the front to complement the sliding doors at the sides. The hybrid MPV runs on a high-powered battery, which is located on the MPV’s center tunnel, as opposed to traditional hybrids whose batteries are usually located behind the car’s rear seats.
The glass roof from which we believe the name ‘Skydeck’ was taken from is another nice touch to the car, in addition to the stylish – and spacious - interior that looks more and more like an office space rather than a car’s interior.
Further details surrounding the car will be revealed in Tokyo. For now, we can give you a first look at what you can expect from Honda’s new hybrid MPV.
Taking a page out of a design that was made over four decades ago, Honda has released the first look at the retro-looking EV-N Concept. If you think you’ve seen that front design before, you probably have; it looks like the N360 micro car.
A small four-seat, electric car, Honda created the EV-N with an attempt to bridge old-school flavour with new-school technology. The car, which is set o be unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show in a few weeks, comes with a solar panel roof, door-mounted U3-X personal mobility devices, and the all-new car-communication technology, the Honda Electric Mobility Loop (HELLO) -
it’s a technology that allows Honda’s outfitted with it the chance to ‘communicate’ with each other, hence the name HELLO.
That’s as much as we know about the EV-N for now. We’ll keep you posted on anything new that comes up leading up to Tokyo where the car will be introduced along with the CR-Z concept and the Skydeck concept.
While it’s definitely lacking in international appeal, the Tokyo Motor Show still figures to attract a strong local audience all eager to see the latest vehicles from the Japanese auto giants.
One car that’s expected to be unveiled in Tokyo is the concept version of the
production-ready Honda CR-Z hatchback. It’s not a fancy super car or an electric concept, but the CR-Z is just about as good as were going to see in Tokyo.
The car, which has been widely reported to start production by next year, will come with a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that has been tinkered with Honda’s Integrated Motor Assist technology as well as a six-speed manual transmission that takes the driving reins away from the car and back to the driver.
With the relatively thin depth of the Tokyo Motor Show this year, you can expect that a lot more people will be paying attention to what Honda - and all the other Japanese car brands, for that matter - has to offer.
And with the announcement that the CR-Z is coming for the show, you can expect a lot of curious eyes loitering around the Honda booth by then.
Hybrid vehicles will most definitely be around for as long as we still use internal combustion engines in our cars. With models like the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight selling like crazy automakers are going to capitalize on whatever sales they can generate at this point in time. So in an attempt to diversify the hybrid market, the Japanese automaker Honda is toying around with the idea of a hybrid sports car. The world’s largest producer of engines is hoping that the crowds at the Tokyo Motor Show accept their new CR-ZX this October with open arms.
Based on the Insight, the CR-ZX will be powered by a small displacement four cylinder engine, ranging somewhere from 1.3 to 1.5 liters that is expected to return almost 60 MPG while in a hybrid sports mode. The body features a very stylish large open mouth front bumper and a sleek three door hatch back profile. This future sports hybrid could compete with other green sports cars like the upcoming Volkswagen Blue Sport Roadster and perhaps even a hybrid 370Z. The hybrid Honda may not be quite up to the level of all electric vehicle like the Tesla Roadster, but if there was any automaker who could it’s Honda. We will just have to wait and see what the tuners at Mugen could do with a CR-ZX SiR.
Detroit is not the only auto show kicking off this weekend. The Tokyo Auto Salon (think SEMA of the Far East) kicks off this Friday, and Honda has announced its lineup for the show. Just like SEMA, the manufactures like to show up with some cool designs, but usually not concept cars. Honda may be cutting back on cool cars, but there is still some room in our hearts for the current cars, especially with custom kits and performance parts.
Cars that are scheduled to appear include the Sports Modulo S2000 Concept, Sports Modulo Fit Concept, and Racing Modulo Civic Type R. While Honda didn’t provide much detail on the full upgrades to the cars, you can check out the picture gallery for a pretty good idea of what the cars are about. Because these are just customized versions of the stuff that comes off the assembly line, hopefully some of these projects will make it into U.S. hands someday.
