Since 2011, the Hyundai Veloster has been a regular fixture at the SEMA Auto Show, providing a base for some truly memorable custom builds. Remember the 2012 Veloster “Velocity” Concept? How about the 2013 Night Racer Concept by EGR Group? Oh, and let’s not forget about the Veloster Zombie Survival Machine by Galpin Auto Sports! This year, a variety of custom Velosters are once again ready to take center stage at SEMA. One example comes from Blood Type Racing.

In many ways, this particular Veloster fits the criteria of what a SEMA-bound vehicle should be. It comes with a dramatic exterior that highlights the car’s aggressive side. It also has a tuned version of the standard 1.6-liter, four-cylinder engine. Most importantly, it showcases what an aftermarket company can accomplish with the right vision.

Blood Type Racing’s Hyundai Veloster Turbo is one of several Hyundai vehicles slated to debut at the 2015 SEMA Auto Show, which kicks off November 3rd.

In standard form, the Veloster is already one of Hyundai’s most aggressive models. But Blood Type Racing took it to the next level by showcasing the hot hatch’s sinister side. The Carbon Black paint job sets the tone, while the carbon fiber wide-body kit establishes the Veloster’s muscular appearance. But it’s really the red projector “demon eye” headlamps that bring out the car’s demonic look.

Red stripes start at the front splitter and run up onto the hood, giving the Veloster that racing look. Rounding out the exterior upgrades are custom 19-inch SSR Professor TF1 wheels with Toyo Proxes R888 tires.

There are currently no photos of the interior, but as it turns out, Blood Type Racing was just as meticulous in dressing up the Veloster’s cabin. Emphasis was placed on turning the hatch into a full-blown racer. The standard seats and steering wheel were replaced with GT-130 racing seats and an SW-465 steering wheel. A four-point roll cage from Pierce Motorsports was also installed, as was a new boost gauge and a wideband AFR gauge from Tanabe.

Blood Type Racing also took the car’s audio system into overdrive by adding top-end speakers, subwoofers, and amplifiers from Rockford Fosgate. Audiophiles will definitely appreciate the Veloster’s new P3SD4-10 shallow subwoofers, P1650 2-way coaxial speakers, P165-SI 2-way component speakers, and P1000X5 amplifier.

Blood Type Racing made a variety of extensive modifications to the 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, allowing it to pump out “more than 500 horsepower.”

A new Garrett turbocharger is largely responsible for that massive uptick in power, but there are other new components contributing as well. New bounds of power and performance are created thanks to an intake manifold from KMC Fabrication, custom forged pistons from Pavel’s Racing Engines, and a methanol/water injection system from Devils Own.

You have to give credit to Blood Type Racing for upgrading nearly every inch of available space in the Hyundai Veloster. The hatchback’s chassis wasn’t exempt from this, as Blood Type Racing added new braces and a torsion bar from Pierce Motorsports, coilovers from BC Racing, and a comprehensive brake kit including new performance brake pads, improved brake lines, and slotted and dimpled rotors.

As far as custom Hyundai Velosters are concerned, Blood Type Racing’s work is arguably one of the most exhaustive projects I’ve seen. It certainly has the kind of personality that fits in well with the whole ethos of SEMA. Give credit to Blood Type Racing for understanding what it takes to build a car that can stand out at the biggest aftermarket auto show in the world.

This Veloster’s mean appearance may turn some people off, but I’m not one of them. I love what Blood Type Racing did to the hatchback, specifically the way it was able to bring out a side of the Veloster we rarely get to see. The hot hatch has some evil in it, the kind that strikes fear on the road, or in this case, the track.

  • Leave it
    • Not for everybody
    • The list of new components is extensive and expensive
    • Is it going up for sale?

Blood Type Racing Inc., the renowned Chicago-based tuner known for his extreme take on Korean vehicles, has revealed its Veloster Turbo R-Spec built for SEMA. The BTR Edition Veloster has an evil twist, designed to look as though it just switched over to the dark side. The car will be revealed at Hyundai’s SEMA press conference on November 3 at 11:30 a.m. PT, in Las Vegas.

The vehicle’s evil appearance began with a “Carbon Black” paint job, accented with a red racing stripe running from the front splitter up onto the hood. A carbon fiber wide-body kit gives the car a muscular, more aggressive stance, and front-mounted aero canards, front splitter and a rear deck spoiler provide down force at speed. Red accents on the custom SSR three-piece wheels, along with red projector “demon eye” headlamps add a final demonic touch to the vehicle’s exterior.

Using the Veloster’s 1.6-liter “Gamma” four-cylinder as a starting block, BTR added new cylinder sleeves, a high-boost turbocharger from Garrett, and custom connecting rods and pistons. With a retuned OEM ECU working in tandem with the strengthened engine internals, power output is now more than 500 horsepower, maintaining OEM drivability through use of Hyundai’s latest GDI technology. The interior has been stripped down and given the full, race-spec treatment with the addition of a four-point roll cage, Sabelt bucket seats, harnesses and steering wheel, along with audio upgrades from Rockford Fosgate and Tanabe OLED Revel gauges.

“The focus of this build was to boost the performance capabilities of the Veloster R-Spec while creating one of the angriest-looking Hyundai vehicles to chew up the pavement,” said Sam Lee, Director of Marketing, Blood Type Racing, Inc. “The engine tune on this vehicle is pushing the small-displacement motor to the edge. With a specific output of 312 horsepower/liter, we’re pushing this small displacement motor close to Formula 1 levels of performance. We’ve developed a number of internal components to help manage the power demands of this new engine, and paired with our hunkered-down suspension and aggressive exterior visuals, this Veloster is guaranteed to turn heads on the SEMA show floor.”
