This prototype is triggering a lot of Audi TT deja-vus

Hyundai is one of the first carmakers to make a move and unveil a vehicle that was supposed to take the stage at the 2020 Geneva International Motor Show. Of course, the coronavirus had other plans, so we’ll have to settle for the online debut of this sleek-looking, all-electric prototype.

Why does the Hyundai Prophecy look like an Audi TT?

Long story short, because it could be the legacy of the man who designed the Audi TT: Peter Schreyer. After joining Kia, mister Schreyer created the tiger nose grille adopted by the South Korean carmaker and our guess is that the also had a word or two to say in the development of the Prophecy concept.

The main concept behind Hyundai’s latest prototype is that of a perfectly weathered stone. Naturally, the vision is complemented by silky smooth surfaces and extremely fluid proportions that end in a sort of boat-tail element created by the narrowing rear quarter panels.

Hyundai’s literature also talks about “excellent aerodynamics” which, to be honest, is something you want from an EV. To this end, the propeller-design wheels serve both form and function, i.e. they look cool, serve the purpose of an EV, but they also suck air down the side of the body.

What’s more, the fixed rear wing generates enough downforce to keep the Prophecy (or a road-going vehicle derived from it at some point) stable at highway speeds, while the large air intake mounted just beneath the front bumper redirects air towards the floor-mounted battery pack and cools it down.

The headlights use pixel lamp technology - as seen on the 45 prototype - just like the vertical taillights and the wing-mounted light strip. Speaking of which, Hyundai says we’ll see these pixelated lamps on its future production cars.

What about the Hyundai Prophecy EV’s interior?

The Prophecy can also work as an autonomous vehicle. So gone is the traditional steering wheel, replaced now by two handle-shaped joysticks that can “pivot left and right.” One of them sits on the center console while the other is integrated into the inside of the driver-side door - the driver is virtually flanked by the two joysticks, sort of like a skier is positioned in relation to the ski poles he uses for balance and propulsion.

With the joysticks, the user can interact with the car, including the whole dashboard that’s not one giant screen that displays various information. What’s more, the plushness of the interior is underlined by the wool carpets “inspired by the flow of water in nature,” ambient lighting, and Hyundai’s Clean Air Technology air purifying system.

There’s no word on the powertrain, and as much as we wanted to find out more about what motives the Prophecy EV, we’ll just have to make do with admiring its flowing shapes until further official details come from Hyundai.

At that time, he was too young to know how they worked and way too young to drive them, but he could see one thing – each of them had a different ethos and their own unique personality. As time went on, he started seeing that in other cars as well, and his love for the automobile was born.  Read More
