The sporty Genesis G70 as transformed into a shooting brake, and it’s downright gorgeous

The 2022 Genesis G70 can now be had as a shooting brake too. Yet another proof of the Korean brand’s continuous expansion is the more practical version of the G70, which made its debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on July 9th, 2021. The sedan version of the car is already a formidable player in the luxury performance sedan market. When the G70 Shooting Brake hits the market, it will compete with the VW Arteon Shooting Brake.

A bold move from Genesis
A Korean Shooting Brake, based on a performance luxury sedan is definitely an interesting proposition

The same engines from the sedan version of the G70 carry over to the Shooting Brake. Just like before, European models will get the 2.2-liter e-VGT turbo-diesel with 199 horsepower and 325 pound-feet (441 Nm) of torque.

The 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four and 3.3-liter twin-turbo V-6 are now being phased out, in favor of a new 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-four and a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6. The new 2.5-liter turbo-four can already be found in the Hyundai Sonata N-Line. In the G70 Shooting Brake, it is expected to make the same 290 horsepower and 311 pound-feet (421 Nm).

The 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6, on the other hand, succeeds the 3.3-liter twin-turbo V-6 and makes 380 horsepower and 391 pound-feet (530 Nm). It’s too early to talk about an EV version of the car, although given the direction carmakers (including Genesis) are headed, it’s only a matter of time.

Since 2020, the six-speed manual has been dropped and now all engines are offered with the eight-speed automatic only. Just like the sedan, power will be sent to the rear, but all-wheel-drive will be optional.

Among the obvious differences is the roofline, which is expected to feature a big sunroof (if you opt for it). More rear headroom and cargo space are to be expected from the G70 Shooting Brake. Other than that, we see the same “Athletic Elegance” design, with its distinctive diamond-shaped grille and the split headlight and taillight design, mimicked by split vents on the front fenders. In addition, for the first time, we see the athletic elegance interpreted in a Shooting Brake body style.

Interior

As with the exterior, the most notable difference is going to be in the back. No doubt, the G70 Shooting Brake will provide a more generous headroom, as well as more cargo capacity than its sedan counterpart.

Other than that, the Shooting Brake gets the familiar highly-finished, two-tone G70 interior, we’ve come to know since 2020. This includes the 10.25-inch, centrally-positioned infotainment screen, with Genesis-exclusive interface and the clear instrument cluster in front of the driver.

With that being said, the G70 Shooting Brake is still based on a rather performance-oriented luxury sedan. With this in mind, luggage capacity will probably not be the best in class, although it’s still expected to be reasonable for that type of car. With this in mind, the only drawback we can think of now is that cargo capacity probably won’t be as generous as that of the VW Arteon Shooting Brake.

Price

We already know that the 2022 Genesis G70 Sedan starts at $38,570 and tops up at around $55,000. For comparison, a VW Arteon starts at around $36,995 and tops up at around $47,000. Sadly, the Arteon Shooting Brake is not coming to the US. Given that UK prices start from £36,510 for the hatchback/fastback and from £37,640 for the Shooting Brake, we can expect the G70 Shooting Brake to be around $1,500 more expensive than the G70 sedan.

Conclusion

Amidst the mass-electrification that’s been happening in recent times, Genesis has realized that performance station wagons are still a thing and there are those of us who like them. The Korean luxury brand has been quite crafty and has been steadily increasing its lineup of uncompromising luxury vehicles. Even the G70, which was their smallest model, is a formidable competitor to the likes of BMW 3-Series and now that the Shooting Brake is almost baked, it will be interesting to see how many buyers it can steal from the competition when it arrives.

Genesis participates in 2021 Goodwood Festival of Speed, an international car festival held in West Sussex, England from August 8th to 11th, and premiered the G70 Shooting Brake, its strategic model for the European market.

The Goodwood Festival of Speed is one of the UK’s most anticipated annual auto festivals with more than 200,000 visitors every year. It offers a variety of attractions by exhibiting rare classic cars from different era, the latest supercars, F1 and WRC (World Rally Championship) race cars.

The G70 Shooting Brake is based on the new G70 sedan released last year, adding an element of practicality with increased trunk space. It highlights the athletic aspect in the balance of ‘Athletic Elegance,’ which is Genesis’ design identity. The G70 Shooting Brake already caught the world’s attention for its new design in May when Genesis released images of the car.

Genesis will exhibit five models from its lineup at this year’s Goodwood Festival, all of which are set for release in Europe, including the G70 Shooting Brake, G80, GV80, G70 and GV70. It will also host the European debut of the Genesis X Concept, an EV-based GT (Gran Turismo) coupe concept car.

Genesis holds an event that each of its entire lineup models drive up the steep upward hill climb course, a unique event at Goodwood event. The event will mark the first time in history a single automotive brand has done this at the Goodwood Festival.

“It means a lot to unveil the G70 Shooting Brake, our strategic model for the European market, at this distinguished international car festival,” said Dominique Boesch, Managing Director for Genesis Motor Europe. “We hope that Genesis will be able to establish a solid position as a luxury brand in the minds of European customers.”

Genesis began sales in Europe in July. Orders have opened for mid-luxury sedan G80 and luxury flagship SUV GV80 and this will be followed by the sales of luxury sport sedan G70, and luxury midsize SUV GV70. Later this year, Genesis plans to launch the G70 Shooting Brake to show its commitment to Europe and also introduce the Electrified G80, further strengthening its brand position.

In order to commemorate the world premiere of the G70 Shooting Brake, Genesis released the special video in first-person view of driving the G70 Shooting Brake from the mansion of ‘Goodwood House’ to famous Hill Climb.
