You Should Probably Cut Off Your Legs if You Want to Ride in the Back of the 2019 Hyundai Elantra GT N Line
The Hyundai Elantra GT N Line has the makings of a solid hot hatch, though if you’re going to seat in the back of one, you might want to brace yourselves. Space isn’t so much of a problem as it is a minor inconvenience for a model that doesn’t have a good amount of rear head- and legroom in the first place. Still, even with the tighter-than-expected rear section, the Elantra GT N Line is a solid first offering in the U.S. from Hyundai’s new N Line performance trim. Even though it’s still the same model, the Elantra GT N Line, in essence, replaces the Elantra GT Sport nameplate, and does so with slight aesthetic, powertrain, and chassis upgrades. Unfortunately, space in the rear of the hot hatch didn’t change, proving that even highly rated debuting models aren’t immune from minor flaws.

As part of its worldwide effort to spice up its lineup, today Hyundai introduced the 2019 Hyundai Elantra GT N Line for the U.S. market at the 2019 Detroit Auto Show. We have already seen the N Line branded car for Europe - dubbed the Hyundai i30 N Line - when we learned that the N Line performance goodies include something more than just an exterior touch up. It is a similar story for the U.S. car although I did notice some clear differences. In short, the U.S. Elantra GT N Line may well be somewhat better compared to the i30 N Line for Europe.

The Hyundai Elantra GT N Line did not come alone to the North American International Auto Show in Detroit; it has the 2019 Velostar N TCR for company. This race car from the South Korean is eligible to race in the 2019 International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) Michelin Pilot Challenge series and the 2019 Blancpain GT World Challenge. Doesn’t it feel tempting to own a car that has raced the tracks?
2019 Hyundai Veloster N
Introduced in 2011, the Hyundai Veloster replaced the Tiburon (known as the Coupe in other markets) in the United States. Essentially a hybrid between a hatchback and a coupe, the Veloster is available in a three-door configuration only and uses small-displacement four-cylinder engines exclusively. Offered in base and Turbo trim, the Veloster can now be ordered with the N upgrade following its second-generation redesign. The higher-performance variant crafted by the still-new N division is the first beefed-up Hyundai offered in the U.S.
Previewed by a series of concept cars with mid-engined configurations, the high-performance Veloster debuted alongside the standard hatchback at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show. Both boast sportier styling, new technology, and improved engines, but the N model also sports a number of aggressive aerodynamic updates, exclusive features inside the cabin, and turbocharged engine powerful enough to give the Volkswagen Golf GTI and Ford Focus ST a run for their money.

2019 Hyundai Veloster
First introduced in 2011 at the Detroit Auto Show, the Hyundai Veloster initially hit the scene as a replacement for the Hyundai Tiburon, the FWD 2+2 coupe built between 1996 and 2008. By contrast, the Veloster changed it up with a funky hatchback profile and 2+1 door layout (one on the driver’s side, two on the passenger’s side). In a segment filled to the brim with hard-hitting, well-established competition, the Veloster is a bit of an upstart, shaking things up with a unique attitude that still manages to make fun-behind-the-wheel a top priority. Throughout its life cycle, we’ve seen a wide variety of custom takes on the Veloster, but now, Hyundai is offering up a whole new second generation. Once again making its debuts at the Detroit Auto Show, the latest 2019 model year brings with it a variety of models and trim levels, including the base model, and the mid-grade Turbo and R-Spec models. There’s even a go-faster N version if that happens to be more your speed (check out our full review on the 2019 Hyundai Veloster N). Just as it was before, the new Veloster once again aims at catching the eye of enthusiasts, with a focus on making the whole package more engaging, both in terms of aesthetics and in terms of the driving experience. The latest model year also comes with a good bit upgraded infotainment stuff as well.
But will the Veloster’s sophomore effort be enough to topple equally enticing offerings from the likes of Mazda, Honda, or Ford? Read on for the details.

Hyundai Veloster N Isn’t Interested in Nurburgring Titles
The Hyundai Veloster N was a surprise attendee at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show. A lot of people weren’t expecting to see it but were thankful anyway when they did. As the second model to get the N performance treatment, the Veloster N is a lot of things. It’s fast, engaging, and a lot of fun to drive. One thing it isn’t, though, is record-breaking. It’s not breaking any lap records at the Nurburgring because it wasn’t developed to do so. That strategy was intentional because, in Hyundai’s eyes, Nurburgring lap records are "a waste of time."
Veloster N Previews Good Things To Come From Hyundai
We saw quite a few interesting debuts at the Detroit Auto Show this year, with a host of fresh metal worthy of your collective automotive attention shedding the sheets and strutting their stuff all over the show floor. As expected, Motown played host tons of important reveals from the domestic makes, but the imports saw some good action as well. One of the most noteworthy was from South Korean brand Hyundai, which gave us an in-depth look at its latest U.S.-bound hot hatchback, the Veloster N. This thing has us excited, offering up all the important hot hatch tricks, but without the premium pricing seen at the top of segment. It’s a move that certainly puts Hyundai on our radar in terms of future performance offerings.

Ant-Man and the Wasp Veloster Proves Hyundai Deserves a Place in the Marvel Universe
The Detroit Auto Show played host to a wide number of debuts and concept vehicles. One car, though, stood out, not only because of its appearance but because of its involvement in one of this year’s biggest blockbuster movies. The car is a 2019 Hyundai Veloster. It’s impossible to miss because it showed up in Detroit dressed in a shiny purple exterior with hot rod flame graphics all over it. More importantly, this particular Veloster will play a role in Marvel Studio’s Ant-Man and the Wasp, which hits theaters in July this year.
Hyundai Veloster Brings N Performance to U.S. for 2019!
The Hyundai Veloster is completely new for 2019 and it’s more than just a hatchback with three doors and a lift gate. Hyundai is using the 2019 Veloster to debut the N Performance line in North America. Like any performance variant like BMW’s M division, Mercedes’ AMG, or Ford’s SVT, the N Performance name means more power, better handling, and a more aggressive overall package.
The 2019 Veloster N packs a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder making 275 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 260 pound-feet of torque from 1,450 to 4,700 rpm. A close-ratio, short-throw six-speed manual transmission with rev matching comes standard. And like the Honda Civic Type R, the Veloster N is front-wheel drive and employs a limited-slip differential. Unlike the Type R’s mechanically operated differential, the Veloster N’s is electronically controlled for variable lock-up and torque vectoring.
Five drive modes (Normal, Sport, N, Eco, and N Custom) changes how the Veloster behaves. The modes alter the throttle response, rev-matching system, exhaust note, active differential tuning, suspension damping, steering weight, and yaw-control characteristics.
The Veloster N’s suspension is fully independent, with a MacPherson strut up front and a multi-link coil spring design in back. The dampers, as mentioned, are electronically controlled and vary the firmness of the N’s ride. The performance brakes include 13.6-inch rotors up front and 12.4-inch rotors in the back. That’s a 0.6-inch improvement over the size of the standard Veloster’s rotors.
Pricing has not been announced, but Hyundai says the 2019 Veloster N will begin production in South Korea in September and will arrive in showrooms in the fourth quarter of 2018. The available colors include Ultra Black, Chalk White, Racing Red, and that awesome N-exclusive Performance Blue.
Hyundai Veloster Gets Much-Needed Redesign, but What’s with the Lancer Evo Face?
Launched back in 2011, the Veloster quickly turned from a rather exotic-looking hatchback into the unfortunate, forgotten child of the Hyundai family. The coupe-style three-door gained very few updates during its first generation and there were plenty of rumors that Hyundai was thinking about giving it the axe. But the Koreans eventually decided to keep the nameplate alive brought the redesigned, second-generation model at the 2018 Detroit Motor Show.
Although far from revolutionary, the Veloster is a fresh take on the design, having borrowed the company’s recent styling language with sportier cues. The front fascia boasts the biggest changes, with more angular headlamps, a larger grille with honeycomb mesh, and an aggressive lower bumper. But while it’s definitely appealing to look at, it reminds me a bit too much of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo. I know, they’re far from identical, but the narrow top grille, and angular headlamps that become slimmer toward the center and the way the hood meets with the nose makes me thing Mitsubishi when I look at it.

Hyundai Keeps Teasing The New Veloster
First hitting North American shores back in 2011, the Veloster is Hyundai’s sporty little three-door hatchback, offering a nice combination of fun and practicality in a modestly affordable package. Now, there’s an updated model just over the horizon and Hyundai is teasing it big time, with the latest refresh shown in a brief 15-second clip composed of quick shots of the front and rear panned against a shadowy background.
Although brief, the video does seem to reveal that the 2019 model year won’t be a huge break from what we’ve seen before, with the updates mostly centered on bringing the Veloster’s aesthetics up to par with the rest of the automaker’s current lineup. There’s still a three-door body style, with one door for the driver and two for the passenger side, plus a low stance and bubbly profile. However, Hyundai does mention that the A-pillars were moved rearwards to give the car a longer look.
Draped over the body panels, we find a blazing orange paint job, although black was also added to the top portions of the car, suggesting a two-tone paint scheme above the window line. In front, the fascia gains a sharper headlight design, with lower daytime running light accents set in LEDs. The central intake uses a hexagonal shape, and there’s a lower splitter element acting as underspoiler for the chin. Smaller side intakes were added to the bumper corners, and while they don’t look functional, they still lend the thing a cool design element thanks to their upward-swinging wing pieces.
In the corners, the wheels use an aggressive turbine design, while higher up, there are decently flared fenders. There’s also a few character lines stretching up into the profile, while black offsets are used for the side skirts and side-view mirrors.
The rear end gets a chunky bumper design with a center-mounted dual-tip exhaust, while the hatch gets a roof spoiler. The rear bumper also comes with a diffuser element for added aero points. Finally, a new taillight design wraps up into the flanks.
In terms of the oily details, expect a front-mounted 1.6-liter engine, turbocharged to produce 201 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque. Once again, muscle is routed exclusively to the front axle.

2017 Genesis G90
Labeled as an automaker that produces cheap cars for many decades, Hyundai has improved its brand reputation tremendously in recent years — thanks to automobiles such as the Genesis and the Equus. In 2015, after some six years of testing the premium segment with the aforementioned sedans, the Korean company has finally decided to enter the luxury segment with a dedicated brand.
The said brand will go by the name Genesis and will include both the Genesis and the Equus nameplates, albeit under a new alphanumeric naming structure that will include the letter "G." The new division will be aimed toward similar products from Toyota’s Lexus and Nissan’s Infiniti arms. The first automobile to be launched under the new brand will be named the Genesis G90 in North America and the Genesis EQ900 in South Korea.
Described as the brand’s new flagship model, the G90 just broke cover in South Korea in December 2015, only a month after Hyundai announced the founding of the Genesis division. At the 2016 Detroit Auto Show, the G90 made its North American debut.
“Genesis’ new large luxury sedan G90 will deliver a concept of ‘New Luxury’ to our customers. The G90 sits at the pinnacle of the Genesis brand and demonstrates how we apply our human-centered values to give our customers true satisfaction in every aspect of the vehicle ownership experience,” said Woong-Chul Yang, Head of Hyundai Motor R&D Center.

As Hyundai found its way into a more premium market, it decided it would begin taking on more luxurious automakers. In doing so, it introduced the Hyundai Genesis – a model that was said to be aimed at the BMW 5 Series. For the 2015 model year, Hyundai introduced the second generation of its rear-wheel drive luxury vehicle boasting a redesigned exterior that rivals that of its German counterparts and an interior that is superior in terms of comfort and appearance. Highlights on the outside include a redesigned grille with an aggressive front fascia, a sculpted side profile, and a sporty rear end that makes you wonder why there is a Hyundai badge on the decklid. Inside, the car comes standard with heated, 12-way adjustable front seats, double-stitching for the leather upholstery, and the option for aluminum and matte-finished wood on the dash. Under the hood, things get even more impressive with a 311 horsepower V-6 or a surprising 5.0-liter V-8 with 420 horsepower.
It might seem odd to think about a Hyundai with more than 400 horsepower, but the brand made it a reality. The Genesis name has now become its own sub-brand under the Hyundai umbrella, but the Geneses sedan lives on through the 2016 model year, where a whole new offering of luxury vehicles will grace showrooms. Hyundai surprised audiences at the North American International Auto Show with the Santa Cruz, a crossover-like pickup truck that blends easy-driving characteristic with functional utility in a stylish package marketed towards Millennials. With a trick extending cargo box, seating for five, all-wheel-drive, and a diesel engine, the Santa Cruz is certainly an interesting concept.

The idea for a crossover truck isn’t a new one. Things like the Honda Ridgeline, Chevrolet Avalanche, and even the GMC Envoy XUV have trotted down that path. Nevertheless, Hyundai’s latest concept vehicle at the North American International Auto Show is a truck of sorts. It’s called the Santa Cruz and Hyundai says it combines all the driving dynamics of a crossover SUV with the utility of a small pickup. A quick read of the press release (below) confirms suspicions that the Santa Cruz Concept is a lifestyle vehicle aimed at Millennials who have “unspoken needs” of greater utility.
“Santa Cruz is the perfect vehicle for those that want the attributes of a CUV, but still have dirty stuff that belongs ‘in the back,’” Hyundai says. The idea is tantalizing: to have room for muddy shoes, fishing or sporting gear, and the occasional stack of firewood without giving up the car-like interior and easy driving attributes.
The Santa Cruz does offer an interesting solution for hauling longer loads in its shorter bed. Beneath the bed lining lies a second section that pulls out like a drawer, added length to the bed’s floor and side walls. The tailgate remains fully functional, allowing easy access to the bed. Cargo tie downs line the inside of the box for easily securing items. A hard-folding tonneau cover seals the bed for weather and security.
What’s more, Hyundai has thrown in a 2.0-liter turbodiesel that makes 190 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. The automaker expects the Santa Cruz to achieve fuel economy ratings in the upper 30-mpg range.

2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid
The Sonata nameplate may be 29 years old as of 2014, but Hyundai’s midsize sedan made little impact on the U.S. market until 2009, when the sixth-generation model was introduced. Developed over four years in a process that cost Hyundai $372 million, the YF Sonata became the first of its kind to receive an assembly line on North American soil. It received a couple of brand-new Theta engines, as well as a hybrid drivetrain that returned 38 mpg combined. The non-hybrid Sonata received yet another makeover for the 2015 model year, which brought exterior and interior styling based on the all-new Genesis. Handsome to look at and more upscale on the inside, the new Genesis was received with enthusiasm in the U.S. As the seventh-gen sedan arrived in dealerships for the 2015 model year, Hyundai revealed a brand-new Hybrid model in South Korea that follows the styling of the non-hybrid models.
With the United States being Hyundai’s most important market in terms of hybrids and plug-in hybrids, the redesigned Sonata Hybrid also received its yankee baptism at the 2015 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. With rather slim differences in terms of styling compared with the non-hybrid model, the new 2016 Sonata Hybrid comes with an entirely new drivetrain and improved fuel economy. The previous generation’s 2.4-liter four-cylinder has been replaced by a downsized, direct-injection, two-liter four cylinder, while the electric motor brings the total power output to a not-to-shabby 193 horsepower.
