Infiniti’s all set to debut the QX70S Design at the 2014 Paris Motor Show in October. But first, how about a few teaser photos to get us all started. That’s the approach the company’s taking with its newest special-edition model. Fortunately, details aren’t as limited as the photos, so at least we get a mental picture of what we can expect to see when the QX70S Design makes it entrance.

The first indication points to the prevalent use of dark chrome on the full-sized luxury crossover. Infiniti says that there’s plenty of the dark chrome finish on the QX70S Design, including the grille, fog light surrounds, side air scoops, side sills and rear numberplate surround. Meanwhile, the headlights now come in a smoked finish, which should give the front end a more stylish look.

There’s been no indication on any performance upgrades, and we don’t expect there to be any. Either way, the QX70 already has a brute of a 3.7-liter V-6 under its hood. It’s capable of producing 325 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque, which is good enough to accelerate the SUV to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds to go with a top speed of 155 mph.

Infiniti’s plans for the QX70S Design call for the special edition SUV to hit selected markets in Western Europe as soon as the car finishes up at the Paris Motor Show.

The interior of the QX70S isn’t a surprise because there’s a photo of it. See that thing of beauty above? The all-black treatment is evident in the lacquer finish of the center console. Look a little closer and you’ll also notice the purple stitching on the seats, steering, wheel, armrest, and door trims. The purple isn’t loud, so it works well with the black in exuding mystery about the cabin. It’s a lot like what Infiniti wants to make the QX70S Design to be, hence the lack of any exterior photos showcasing the entire model.

A set of 21-inch six-spoke alloy wheels is also part of the QX70’s upgrades. They’re black, same as the finish used by Infiniti on the mirrors and roof rails.

We can make a case that the Infiniti QX70 is the best-looking of all crossover/SUV models the company has in its lineup. Outside of its proportions, the QX70 has established itself as a worthy contender to the luxury SUV segment. It may not have the cache as Land Rover, but it does provide customers an excellent option for a luxury SUV that’s not emboldened to be more than what it is.

The design is impressive, much more than the boxy mess that is the QX80.

Meanwhile, power comes from two engines: a standard, 3.7-liter V-6 that makes 325 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque, or an optional 5.0-liter V-8 that produces 390 ponies and 369 pound-feet of torque.

The Infiniti QX70 starts at $45,750 for the QX70 3.7 all goes up to $73,000 for the most powerful QX70 5.0 AWD.

Dark chrome is the new black for the Infiniti QX70S Design which has its premiere at the Paris Motor Show.

Adding a definite bad-boy spirit to the elegant sportiness of the QX70, the new S Design edition builds on the provocative, design-led ethos of the standard QX70 – the original full-size luxury crossover to embody the athletic dynamism of a sports car.

The antidote to SUV boxiness and blandness, the QX70 in new S Design form features everything that has made the QX70 such a global hit – including its long-bonnet proportions, flowing lines and powerful stance – but with a designer twist for a bespoke new look.

Dark chrome is the key to unlocking the QX70’s dark side. It is used for the grille, foglight surrounds, side air scoops, side sills and rear numberplate surround, endowing the shapely body with a technical finish that perfectly complements the car’s seductive character. The headlights have a new smoked finish while wheels for the S-design are 21-inch six-spoke alloys finished in black, to match the black roof rails and black mirrors.

In S Design form the Infiniti QX70 is more head-turning than ever, making a striking and very singular SUV statement.

The S Design theme continues in the cabin with black lacquer finish on the centre console and purple stitching for seats, steering, wheel, armrest and door trims. With the lavish equipment of the S-Premium model included as standard in every S Design version, the cabin’s luxury character is enhanced while retaining all the driver focus and intuitive control for which the Infiniti QX70 is known.

Power, response and agility characterize how the QX70S Design is to drive, its athletic bearing extending to a real athlete’s ability on the most demanding of roads. Powerful V6 engines, in either petrol or diesel forms, advanced chassis, balanced handling, and precise steering and gear control – the latter via Infiniti’s much imitated but never bettered magnesium paddle shifters on the steering column – guarantee every drive is a rewarding drive.
