Infiniti launching new "Limited" trim level of the QX70 at NY Auto Show

The Infiniti QX70 started life as the Infiniti FX in 2003. The second generation came to be in 2008, followed by a facelift in 2011. Since then, there have only been minor changes to the SUV, with the most important being the name change to QX70 in 2013. For 2016, not a lot has changed, and needless to say, the QX70 is due to see another generational change. That isn’t happening yet, but Infiniti has just announced a new edition to the QX70 lineup that is slated to debut later this week at the New York Auto Show. Its name: the QX70 Limited.

Infiniti is teaching an old dog new tricks, as the QX70 Limited is said to bring an “extra touch of exclusivity” by offering a number of visual enhancements inside and out. Vice President of Infiniti Americas, Randy Parker, said, “The QX70 has always been a popular model in the greater New York area so it’s fitting that visitors to the New York International Auto Show will be the very first to see this beautiful new QX70 Limited model.” He continued, “The QX70 Limited offers a range of premium exterior and interior treatments, adding an extra touch of exclusivity to the dramatically styled crossover.”

Don’t get your hopes up for any drivetrain enhancements, because that just isn’t in the books for the QX70 right now, but this new Limited model does sport the new Grille that will be found on all QX70 models in the near future, along with a revised front fascia. Both of which are very good things for this old dog. So, let’s quit wasting time and take a look at the QX70 Limited before it makes its debut later this week.

What makes the Infiniti QX70 Limited special

Let’s get right to business here. The most dominate feature of the QX70 Limited is that new grille up front. It is the same shape as the grille on the QX70 we’ve been looking at for the past few years, but it doesn’t have the chrome colored horizontal louvers. Instead, the grille on the QX70 Limited is backed by black honeycomb mesh with the Infiniti emblem floating in the center – a design that will make its way to the rest of the QX70 lineup for the 2017 model year. Down below, the front fascia has also been redesigned. The round fog lights have been nixed in favor of horizontally shaped LED fog lights. The lower trim insert has been painted in a silver finish with two vertical fins connecting the insert to the upper portion of the fascia.

As we move to the sides, those vents on the front fenders are now painted in the same color as the body. The side view mirrors have also taken on a darker appearance that matches the cladding that runs along the very bottom of the SUV. To the rear, the rear tail lamps take on a slight tint, which actually looks great with the gray exterior finish shown in the images here. Everything else about the rear is the same, except that the rear fascia now has a stainless steel protector, and there is a “Limited” badge on the rear hatch. The QX70 Limited rides on its own set of 21-inch, multi-spoke, paint-finished, aluminum-alloy wheels that are wrapped in 265/45-series all-season tires.

On the inside, the QX70 gets more special treatment with a high-contrast Graphite and Stone color scheme. As you can see most of the interior takes on a black, graphite-like color with stone colored inserts in the center of the seats, one the outside edge of the seats, and the armrest on the door handles. Furthermore, we see stone-colored stitching holding all of the leather together. Those stone-colored inserts on the seats also have a diamond-shaped quilting to them, and you’ll find stone-colored stitching on the steering wheel and the shifter boot. Those seats, by the way, are heated and cooled, which is a standard feature on the QX70 Limited. It all comes together in combination with the dark-colored headliner to create a rounded out interior. Altogether, it really is a nice touch.

As I said before, the QX70 Limited will be powered by the same 3.7-liter V-6 that is used in all QX70 models. That engine uses variable valve event and lift technology and delivers 325 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque. The QX70 Limited is offered in the standard rear-wheel-drive configuration or with Infiniti’s Intelligent all-wheel-drive system. Power from the 3.7-liter is sent to the wheels via a seven-speed automatic transmission with adaptive shift control. Available driver assistance features include Around View Monitor with Moving Object Detection, full-speed-range Intelligent Cruise control, Lane Departure Warning, and Lane Departure Prevention.

Infiniti has yet to disclose what kind of price point the QX70 Limited will carry, but with the base model starting out at $45,850 in rear-wheel drive and $47,300 for all-wheel drive, I suspect the RWD QX70 Limited will start out around $46,500 while the AWD Limited will probably start out around $48,100. The QX70 Limited will make its debut at the New York Auto Show, and hit Infiniti dealers come summer of 2016.

The QX70 might be an SUV, but because it is made by Infiniti, it is designed mainly for luxury, and really isn’t meant to go off-road. What it is good for is transporting up to five passengers with an excessively smooth and comfortable ride, and in style, too. With that 3.7-liter V-6 stashed under the hood, the QX70 can hit a 60 mph sprint in 5.8 seconds with top speed electronically limited to 155 mph. When you think about it, hitting 60 mph in less than six seconds isn’t bad for an SUV of this size.

As of the 2016 model year, the QX70 features push-button start, 10-way powered driver’s seat, eight-way powered passenger seat, a Bose 11-speaker audio system with XM radio capability, and a seven-inch infotainment display screen as standard. At the time of this writing, the rear-wheel-drive QX70 starts out at $45,850, and the all-wheel-drive model starts out at $47,300. If you go for options like the larger infotainment screen, powered steering column, a navigation system, or the other various driver assistance features, the price can easily climb above the $50,000 mark.
