After skipping the 2021 model year update, Infiniti recently introduced the 2022 QX60 mid-size SUV. It comes with a whole lot of updates and feels quite modern overall. It retains the same engine, but it’s now mated to a nine-speed automatic gearbox instead of the lousy CVT. The SUV features a front-wheel-drive layout as standard, but an all-wheel-drive system is also available on all the trims. Infiniti has also introduced a new top-of-the-line trim called Autograph that feels plush and luxurious. As for the pricing, the starting price is up by a couple of thousands. The 2022 QX60 starts at around $47,000 and goes all the way up to $63,000.

The Infiniti QX60 comes with LED headlights and LED daytime running lights as standard. It wears a pretty large grille on the face with an unmissable Infiniti logo on it. There are chrome touches all around that add a premium vibe to the SUV without making it look loud and gaudy. The rear also looks sweet with those slim LED taillights.

The QX60 is offered in four different trims – Pure, Luxe, Sensory, and a new top-of-the-line Autograph trim. The base Pure trim rides on 18-inch wheels finished in charcoal metallic as standard. They are shod in 255/60 section tires. The other three trims come with 20-inch shoes. The Luxe wheels have a sporty dark silver finish, whereas the Sensory and Autograph are finished in a charcoal metallic shade, just like the Pure trim’s wheels.

Overall, the QX60 looks quite handsome and is one of the better-looking mid-size, three-row SUVs in the market today.

Step inside the cabin and you’ll notice how plush the QX60 feels on the inside. The Pure, Luxe, and Sensory trims come with leather-appointed seats. The Autograph’s seats come wrapped in semi-aniline leather upholstery. Also, the Autograph trim comes with captain seats in the middle row, thus making it a six-seater. The other trims have a bench seat that can seat three people in the middle, and two each at the front and rear.

The driver’s seat is eight-way power-adjustable, four-way lumbar adjustable, and heated as standard on all the trims. The top trim even comes with a massage function. Even the leather-wrapped steering wheel is heated on the top trim. The base Pure trim comes with Black Lacquer interior accents, the Luxe with Silver Metallic Weave, and the top two trims with Black Open Pore Ash Wood.

On the tech front, the 2022 Infiniti QX60 comes with a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system on the center console on all the trims. It supports Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay. The base trim features a seven-inch screen in the instrument cluster behind the steering wheel, whereas the other three trims come with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. A 10.8-inch head-up display is optional.

Infiniti offers the QX60 with only one engine option – a 3.5-liter, naturally aspirated V-6 engine. The same engine is found in a few Nissan products as well; like the Pathfinder.

This 3.5-liter, V-6 engine churns out 295 horses at 6,400 rpm and 270 pound-feet of torque at 4,800 rpm. Fortunately, Infiniti has ditched the lousy Continuous Variable Transmission in favor of a nine-speed automatic gearbox with paddle shifters. Power is routed to the front wheels as standard, but you can also opt for an all-wheel-drive system for extra moolah. The all-wheel-drive system is available on all four trims.

BMW X5

One of the best SUVs you can buy in this segment is the BMW X5. It could be my soft corner for this SUV, but there’s no denying the X5 is feature-rich and one of the strongest mid-size SUV contenders. It comes with a 12.3-inch touchscreen system and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster behind the steering wheel.

Unlike the QX60’s naturally aspirated engine, the BMW X5 comes with a twin-turbo, inline-six engine that displaces at three liters. It makes 335 ponies between 5,500- and 6,500 rpm, and 331 pound-feet of torque between 1,500- and 5,200 rpm. Power is sent to the rear wheels as standard via an eight-speed automatic gearbox, but you can opt for it with an all-wheel-drive system as well. It takes 5.3 seconds to 60 mph and has a top speed of 130 mph as standard. The same engine is also offered with an electric motor that delivers 50 MPGe.

The 2021 BMW X5 is priced at $59,400 for the rear-wheel-drive model and $61,700 for the all-wheel-drive system. The hybrid X5, called the xDrive45e, is priced at $65,400. The M50i model with a V-8 engine starts at $82,800.

Mercedes-Benz GLE

The SUV from Mercedes is the other strong rival that Infiniti needs to fend off to make a mark. The GLE comes with all the bells and whistles and is a mature product overall. Mercedes also offers it in the coupe form. It comes with a conjoined screen behind the steering wheel, part of which is the digital instrument cluster, and the other part being the touchscreen that runs on the MBUX system.

Unlike the QX60 and the X5, the GLE comes with a four-cylinder, turbocharged engine in the base form. This 2.0-liter mill cranks 255 horses and 273 pound-feet of torque. Just like the Bimmer, power is sent to the rear wheels as standard via a nine-speed automatic gearbox, but an all-wheel-drive version is also available. An inline-six-pot turbocharged mill is also offered that makes 362 ponies and 369 pound-feet of twist. It takes 5.5 seconds to 60 mph from rest, which is 1.6 seconds quicker than the four-cylinder all-wheel-drive model.

The Mercedes-Benz GLE starts at $54,750 for the GLE 350, $57,250 for the 4MATIC version of the same trim, and $62,500 for the 450 trim that packs a six-cylinder engine. There’s one with a V-8 engine, too, that starts at $78,900, but Infiniti doesn’t have a performance offering of the QX60 like this.
