This wagon is an exciting proposition, but the 2021 model won’t make it to the U.S.

Jaguar recently gave the XF a midlife refresh for the 2021 model. While the company updated both the sedan and the wagon, only the former will be sold Stateside. Not too long ago, the automaker confirmed that the XF Sportbrake will no longer be available in the U.S., the reason for it being poor sales.

At a time when automakers were removing wagons from their U.S. lineup, Jaguar decided to introduce the XF Sportbrake. The move backfired and in less than four years after bringing it to our shores, the company has axed it.

However, for the 2021 model, the XF Sportbrake comes with changes inside out that fall in line with the changes made to the XF sedan. Will the European customers be tempted to opt for this refreshed model?

What’s New On The Outside?

On the outside, the XF Sportbrake receives a new front bumper with larger and lower air intakes for increased visual width. The front grille is wider and features mesh detailing. The headlights have gotten slimmer and the all-LED quad headlights make an appearance this time. While the LEDs are standard across the range, these headlights can be had with the optional Pixel LED technology as well. They also feature the ‘Double J’ Daytime Running Lights.

Things in the back are also slightly different. The bumper is now wider and the upper portion is body-colored, thus giving an illusion of the wagon sitting lower than it actually is. The R-Dynamic spec features different, aggressive design elements to differentiate it from the rest of the lineup. You can have the wagon in a Black Exterior Pack that details bespoke elements in a Gloss Black finish, if bling is not your thing.

How Is It On The Inside?

The cabin is a step up from the outgoing model and looks a lot more premium.

There are a lot of new touches, like open-pore wood veneers and aluminum, laser-etched mid-line speaker frets, metallic rotary dial that controls the JaguarDrive Control, 360-degree grab handle, etc. Behind the steering wheel is a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster which Jaguar calls the “HD Interactive Driver Display”. It displays stuff like including full-screen navigation, infotainment details, and so on.

The biggest change, however, comes on the center console in the form of a new 11.4-inch curved-glass touchscreen that runs on the automaker’s new Pivi Pro system.

It supports Apple CarPlay as standard and Android Auto is standard only on U.K. models. It comes with a dual-sim technology to stream media and download over-the-air updates. Wireless charging is also available as an optional accessory.

What’s Under The Hood?

The 2021 Jaguar XF Sportbrake will be offered with three different engine options that include two gasoline mills and an oil-burner.

The diesel mill is a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder turbo that makes 201 horses and 317 pound-feet of torque. It features a mild-hybrid system as standard that makes use of a belt-integrated starter-generator, which essentially helps with regenerative braking. The energy harvested is stored in a 48-volt lithium-ion battery and features a stop/start system.

The engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox. You can have this engine in either a rear-wheel-drive or an all-wheel-drive configuration. In the all-wheel-drive iteration, the XF Sportbrake takes 7.5 seconds to sprint to 60 mph from a standstill. Jaguar says that it can deliver up to 54.2 mpg.

Coming to the gasoline mills, Jaguar offers a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine in two different power output configurations. The first one makes 247 horses and 269 pound-feet of torque, whereas the more powerful version makes 296 ponies and 295 pound-feet of twist. Both of them receive a twin-scroll turbocharger and Continuous Variable Valve Lift, and are mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

The 247-horsepower version is available with only a rear-wheel-drive layout. Jaguar hasn’t listed the 0-60 mph time, but in the XF sedan, this mill takes 6.5 seconds to reach the figure. The 296-horsepower iteration is offered in an all-wheel-drive avatar only and the Sportbrake takes 5.8 seconds to gallop to 60 mph.

Auto High Beam Assist is available on the SE and HSE models that makes use of the forward-facing camera. Some other new add-ons include segment-first Active Road Noise Cancellation technology that constantly monitors vibrations from the road surface and calculates the opposite phase sound wave needed to remove the noise heard by the occupants.

This is present on the other recent facelifts as well, like the 2021 Jaguar F-Pace and the 2021 Range Rover Velar. There’s a second-generation wearable Activity Key that can be used to access and start the wagon. It replaces the conventional key fob.

There are also things like:

  • Clear Exit Monitor
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • 3D Surround Camera
  • Secure Tracker
  • ClearSight Interior Rearview Mirror
  • Guardian Mode
