Visual Comparison: Volvo XC40 VS Jaguar E-Pace
Volvo has recently introduced their compact, premium SUV, the XC40, in Milan, Italy. It happens to be the third vehicle to join Volvo’s SUV lineup and has a lot of work to do in a crowded segment. The Compact SUV also happens to be Volvo’s first vehicle to be underpinned by their new modular vehicle architecture (CMA) platform. This platform will also support Volvo’s fully electric vehicles of the future as the brand continues to evolve. All told, the XC40 sits below the XC60 in the lineup and competes with some other recently unveiled smaller premium SUVs like the Jaguar E-Pace.
The E-Pace borrows some of its design formulas from the flagship F-Pace Crossover, much like the XC40 borrows some DNA from its larger brethren. Surprisingly, both of these SUV’s seem to have inherited all their technologies from the bigger SUV of their lineup. Both the Volvo XC40 and the Jaguar E-Pace will be available with a thirst for diesel or petrol at the time of launch (and, depending on the market) and can be optioned with four-wheel drive as well.
Jaguar E-Pace Sets Record For Farthest Barrel Roll in a Production Vehicle
It’s hard to have a more successful world debut than what the Jaguar E-Pace just had. You would think that being the second SUV in Jaguar’s lineup would be enough to catch people’s attention, right? Nope. Jaguar had to do something different, and it did just that by setting a new Guinness World Record for the longest barrel roll of any production vehicle, doing so by hitting a 50 foot-long jump and completing a 270-degree corkscrew in the process. The world record itself is impressive, but it’s really old hat for Jaguar, which has made a habit of setting world records upon the debuts of its new models. Remember, the Jaguar F-Pace also launched itself in the record books when it set the loop-the-loop record with a measurement of 62.6 feet during its launch in 2015.
Renowned stunt driver Terry Grant took the wheel of the E-Pace during the barrel roll attempt, which was an excellent choice as Grant owns 24 Guinness World Records. Think the E-Pace’s barrel roll record is his crowning achievement? That’s up for debate since he also owns the aforementioned loop-the-loop record with the F-Pace, not to mention his other records, including driving a Nissan Juke on two wheels and going 55 mph for 1.6 miles while piloting the Nissan Leaf. This new world record set by the E-Pace is the perfect showcase of the new SUV’s agility and performance capabilities. It’s hard to imagine any kind of real-world application as far as barrel-rolling is concerned, but then again, a record is a record and Jag’s new SUV can now be considered a legitimate world record-holder.

Jaguar Pulls The Covers Off Of The New E-Pace, Officially Establishes SUV Family
The Jaguar F-Pace represents Jag’s first foray into the SUV market and it’s been an unbridled success. It’s received rave reviews, posted strong sales numbers, and was even named the 2017 World Car of the Year back in April. Needless to say, the follow-up model would have enormous shoes to fill. That model has now arrived, and from the looks of things, the all-new Jaguar E-Pace is going to do just fine slotting in below the F-Pace in Jag’s now-potent crossover and SUV lineup.
The entry-level premium crossover officially made its world debut in London and there’s already growing confidence among Jaguar execs that it has another hit on its hands with the new E-Pace. The crossover won’t have an easy time at it, though, because it’s entering a market that already features entrenched models like the Audi Q3, BMW X1, Mercedes GLA-Class, and Porsche Macan. Don’t expect Jag’s new crossover to shrink away from the competition, not when it has the F-Pace’s pedigree and some technical assistance from Jaguar’s sister company Land Rover, regarded as the godfather of today’s modern crossovers and SUVs. All things considered, the Jaguar E-Pace has all the tools to be as successful as its big brother. The more important question to ask is if it’s good enough for World Car of the Year consideration. It’s too early to say at this point, but the signs are there for the E-Pace to have a similar trajectory as the F-Pace. It just has to prove it’s worth all the hype.

After months of rumors, teasing and other details surrounding the all-new Jaguar XE, it is finally official, as Jaguar unveiled it on September 8, 2014. Marketed as the British answer to the BMW 3 Series, the XE looks as if it will take on the 3 Series lineup from top to bottom. At the official reveal, Jaguar turned much of its attention to the XE S, which is obviously the answer to the BMW 335i and Mercedes C400, but there is also a collection of smaller diesel and gasoline engines for the lower level trims. The only model that Jaguar failed to talk about was the answer to the C63 AMG and M3, which should wear either an "R," "R-S," or an "SVR" badge.
This new car is the first that is built using Jaguar’s all-new aluminum architecture that was previewed with the C-X17 Concept SUV. Jaguar has been building aluminum-intensive cars for over a decade now, but this move further reduces the weight of Jaguar’s many offerings.
The new XE, which will likely be the backbone of Jaguar’s sales once it hits showrooms in 2015 — U.S. availability is 2016 — is the first big step the company is taking toward a lineup that will include lighter and fuel-efficient, yet powerful and sporty vehicles. A compact front-wheel-drive Jaguar hatchback would have seemed like a farcical idea only a few years ago for the once-stuffy British brand, but the same could have been said for a Jaguar SUV, which is now imminent in the form of the F-Pace. Speaking at the New York Auto Show, Jaguar designer, Ian Callum, expressed his interest in conceiving a small, entry-level Jag that would slot in below the BMW 3 Series-rivaling XE.
"There’s always space to go smaller — the world is changing very quickly," Callum told Australian website Motoring. “I think there’s a huge opportunity in the small car market, but it’s a very difficult business — hugely competitive and hugely price conscious."
The small Jag under consideration would go up against the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, BMW 1 Series and Audi A3, but there are obstacles that need to be addressed before that happens. Jaguar is still a much smaller company than any of their rivals in Germany, and without similar resources, a high-volume, low-cost car would be difficult to justify. For now, Callum says Jaguar is "too small to think about taking on that sense of volume and competitive pricing," but that hasn’t stopped the company from planning ahead.
Things are looking more and more promising for Jaguar to bring a crossover utility into its lineup. The assurance comes from AutoGuide who interviewed Jaguar Land Rover North American marketing vice president Kim McCullough.
“[A] smaller crossover is an opportunity for the biggest growth. That’s the area that’s really exploding. Between that and the compact sedan segment, those are two big areas of white space for [Jaguar] that will provide the volume that’s so important as we look ahead,” McCullough said.
This comes after last year’s debut of the Jaguar C-X17 crossover concept. The beautifully designed vehicle was directly aimed at the BMW X5 and seemed all but ready to appear on dealer lots. Though we haven’t seen much of the C-X17 since its original showing at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, it appears Jaguar hasn’t forgotten about the project.
“We need to make sure that a business plan is in place that will allow for profitable, sustainable growth for the brand and that’s why filling some core white space opportunities will be critical,” McCullough continued.
With North America being Jaguar’s biggest sales region, it only makes sense to follow the current trend of the crossover craze. Adding such a vehicle will surely help Jaguar Land Rover meet its ambitious goal of selling 750,000 units per year by 2020. That’s a marked jump from the current 425,006 unites the automaker rolled out for 2013.
Also helping in the fight for growth will be Jags all-new XE sedan. The Mercedes C-Class and BMW 3 Series fighter will hit showrooms for the 2016 model year, just as the current C-Class turns two years old and the 3 Series sits at five years old.

Jaguar’s FEEL XE campaign entered its next phase ahead of the Jaguar XE’s debut at the Paris Motor Show. This time around, the British automaker enlisted the help of noted British designer Stella McCartney to dress up a fleet of XE models in her own Spring Superhero print. Yes, the images you see covering the British luxury sedan are part of McCartney’s new superhero-themed line. Jaguar’s really going all-out to promote Feel XE, a platform it created back in July 2014 to “harness the spirit of British creativity and innovation." The company even tapped influential figures in music, film, and design to help promote the campaign.
That’s where Stella McCartney comes in. The popular British designer is lending her new superhero print into the XE, creating a playful and dynamic exterior that meshes well with its high-class interior. I admittedly don’t recognize any of the superhero heads printed into the XE, but I do appreciate that the XE can still have a fun side to it to bolster its reputation as an all-world sports sedan.
The superhero-clad Jaguar XEs will be parading in Paris on Monday, September 29, 2014 where they’ll be taking part in McCartney’s Paris Fashion Week Show on the same day. From there, the countdown begins to the Paris Motor Show where Jaguar is set to announce full details of the entire XE range.

The newly launched Jaguar XE, Britain’s lightweight competitors for the likes of the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class, will spawn a new family of models, including coupe and station wagon versions. That’s the word from Car Advice, who got the information straight from Nick Miller, chief program engineer for the XE, at the sedan’s official launch in London.
Miller refrained from unveiling any actual details, but he suggested the XE will get more body styles in the future. A coupe and an estate are the obvious choices for this lineup. Naturally, the two-door will compete against the 4 Series, with a high-performance version to take on the beefed-up M4. "I’ll never say never for the future – we’re looking at all different styles for the future," he said.
On a side note, Miller also hinted that the C-X17 crossover will make it to production on the same platform.

Jaguar Land Rover has been really working on its in-car technologies these days. Remember all the fancy self-learning software inside those Land Rovers in this video? Well, Jaguar is showcasing its own set of dashboard wizardry in the upcoming 2016 Jaguar XE with this swanky video.
With the help of animated parts exploding outward for detailed views, Jaguar’s Global Connected Car Director, Mike Bell, takes us on a tour of what we can expect from the upcoming luxury car.
The Jaguar XE will be the first of many Jaguars featuring the automaker’s "InControl Touch Infotainment system" that integrates many advanced features through an eight-inch touch screen in the dash and Jaguar’s new Plain Speech Voice Control system. The infotainment software will seamlessly connect with both Apple and Android devices for in-car integration of certain applications. An in-car Wi-Fi hotspot allows multiple devices to access high-speed Internet.
Also present is an optional laser-projected heads-up display system that shows information over the entire width of the windshield including driving directions, vehicle information, and even road sign recognition. Of course a premium audio system will be featured; this one coming from Meridian.
Protecting all this valuable technology and the entire Jaguar XE will be the InControl Protect and InControl Secure systems with the former allowing for SOS emergency and Jaguar Assistance calls to be placed without the need for a cell phone in the car while the latter allows authorities to track the vehicle should it become stolen.
Overall it seems Jaguar Land Rover is working hard on becoming the leader of in-car technology and smart phone integration. We’re looking forward to getting our hands on this gadgetry when it debuts in late 2015.
