Jeep launched the concept version of the Grand Wagoneer back in September 2020 and it gave us a glimpse of what to expect from the production-spec SUV. The automaker revived the Wagoneer moniker from the dead only for it to be branched out into two different SUVs – the Wagoneer and the Grand Wagoneer. The Wagoneer will come with a smaller engine and fewer goodies compared to the Grand Wagoneer.

The Grand Wagoneer is the epitome of luxury, to say the least. Aside from its massive presence, the SUV comes with a plush interior, 75 inches of a total screen display in the cabin, and a price tag of $111,000 for the top-end model!

Jeep Grand Wagoneer Exterior

The Grand Wagoneer doesn’t look too different from the concept model that was unveiled six months back. Up front, it features the signature seven-slat grille, but it isn’t illuminated as seen previously. However, the grille has active shutters that open or shut depending on the cooling it needs. The SUV comes with ‘unique premium LED lighting that is different from the LED headlights on the standard Wagoneer. The side profile gives you a clear idea of how big the Grand Wagoneer is! Jeep has equipped power-retractable steps here. Also, some design elements on it pay homage to the original Wagoneer.

This SUV rides on 20- or 22-inch wheels as standard, depending on the trim. Sweet three-dimensional wheel caps highlighting the Wagoneer logo are suspended in acrylic. It won’t be offered with the 24-inch wheels we saw on the concept model. The aluminum wheels will be offered in four different finishes. The Grand Wagoneer will be offered in three exclusive colors - Midnight Sky Blue, Rocky Mountain Green, and Ember Red.

The wheelbase is 123 inches long and weighs between 6,340- and 6,420 pounds, depending on the trim The approach angle is rated at 25 degrees, breakover angle at 22 degrees, and departure angle at 24 degrees. These ratings are much better than the Wagoneer’s, courtesy of the standard air suspension. When you touch speeds of 35 mph, a standard active front air dam automatically extends downward 3.5 inches to aid the aerodynamics.

Jeep Grand Wagoneer Drivetrain, Towing, and Payload Capacities

Power is sent to all the wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox. It comes with cylinder deactivation technology to deliver more miles on a tank of gas. Despite its weight and size, the Grand Wagoneer takes just six seconds to 60 mph from a standstill.

Jeep will offer three different four-wheel-drive systems to choose from on the Grand Wagoneer:

The base system is the Quadra-Trac I that comes with a single-speed active transfer case and makes use of sensors to adjust torque distribution. There are no switches or levers here.

Next is the Quadra-Trac II setup which features a two-speed active transfer case with low-range gear. When the vehicle detects wheel slippage, it will send 100 percent of torque to the axle which has the most traction. On the Grand Cherokee L, this drive system is equipped with Active 4-Low torque control with a 2.72:1 gear ratio. No word on that being the case here.

Finally, there’s the full-fledged Quadra-Drive II system, that features a two-speed active transfer case and a rear electronic limited-slip differential for the best off-roading experience you can achieve with the Grand Wagoneer.

A Selec-Terrain is standard comes with Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II systems. There are five different settings you can choose – Auto, Sport, Rock, Snow, and Sand/Mud. The Grand Wagoneer comes with a Quadra-Lift air suspension that features five height settings:

-* Normal – sits eight inches off the ground

-* Off-road 1 – Lifts the SUV an additional inch (nine inches)

-* Off-road 2 – Raises the vehicles by two inches (ten inches)

-* Park Mode – Lowers it up to 1.6 inches from the normal setting (7.4 inches)

-* Aero Mode – Lowers the SUV by 0.6 inches from the normal setting (8.4 inches).

When driven in Sport or Eco mode, the Grand Wagoneer slips into this suspension setting.

The Grand Wagoneer also has a maximum towing capacity of up to 9,850 pounds with a 3.92 axle ratio, which is the segment-best rating, and a maximum payload capacity of 1,450 pounds.

Cadillac Escalade

The fifth-gen Escalade was launched last year and it was quite a revelation. Shedding its image from the past, the SUV now boasts of a luxurious persona and GM would hope it doesn’t hit any more rough patches in its journey. Just like the Grand Wagoneer, the 2021 Escalade is also tech-heavy. There’s a 38-inch curved OLED that is essentially split up into three different screens. A 7.2-inch screen sits on the left, a 14.2-inch gauge cluster in the middle, and a 16.9-inch infotainment screen on the right side. Cadillac is also offering Augmented Reality Navigation, similar to one seen on the Mercedes vehicles. There are two engine options on offer – a 3.0-liter, six-cylinder Duramax mill that makes 277 horses and 460 pound-feet of torque, and a 6.2-liter, V-8 engine that churns out 420 ponies and 460 pound-feet of twist. Both of them are mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. It also comes in two different body lengths. While it starts at $77,500, opting for the top trim with additional goodies pushes the price north of $110,000.

BMW X7

The BMW X7 is a true-blue luxury SUV. The number of interior themes and color combinations, and the features make it one of the plushest SUVs in the segment. The vase trim comes with a V-6 under the hood, but opt for the M50i and your X7 will come with a 4.4-liter, twin-turbo V-8 engine. It makes a lot more power than the Grand Wagoneer – 523 horses and 553 pound-feet of torque. Power is sent to all the wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox. It is also fairly quick, taking 4.5 seconds to 60 mph from a standstill. It weighs 5,661 pounds, making it much lighter than the Grand Wagoneer. For the six-pot mill, you’ll have to shell out $74,900, but the V-8 X7 starts at $99,800.

Final Thoughts

The 2022 Grand Wagoneer is big, heavy on tech features, powered by a V-8 engine, enough off-road tech, and a ton of safety features. The amount of effort Jeep has put into building this model is visible. The crazy number of touchscreens takes off the simplicity and ease-of-use convenience from the SUV, though. The 2022 Grand Wagoneer will be built at the automaker’s plant in Warren, Michigan, and will arrive at dealerships this summer. You can place your booking for the SUV with a $500 deposit.
