The EV9 Concept Previews Kia's Assault on the Premium EV Segment

The EV9 Concept Previews Kia’s Assault on the Premium EV Segment

The Kia EV9 is sharp and aggressive on the outside yet remarkably smooth on the inside

Right around the same time that Hyundai revealed its new SEVEN Concept, Kia revealed the new EV9 concept, which is arguably, a little more production ready. Like the SEVEN Concept, the EV9 previews a real production model, but it’s not quite so large, and has more of an aggressive exterior appearance while the interior has hints of luxury all around. Is this the future of Kia? We certainly hope so.

2019 Kia Futuron Concept

2019 Kia Futuron Concept

A peek at the future of Kia design

Kia glided through the design process of its latest coupe SUV concept, the Futuron, drawing inspiration from outer space. With Level 4 autonomy, this SUV with a "360-degree core" represents a look at the future of Kia design with its novel approach to the tiger nose front grille and the eye-catching Star Cloud headlights and taillights. In fact, the concept features light sources all over the luscious bodywork that suggests this EV’s got some grunt. Expect to see at least some cues inside and out on future models of the Korean automaker.

South Korea has quickly risen, in the span of about two decades, from the doldrums of the auto industry to the very top and concepts such as Kia’s Futuron (in itself a pun on the words "future" and "on") signals to the world that Kia plans to stay at the top in the foreseeable future by incorporating the latest EV technology coupled with autonomous systems, all draped in a futuristic body with clean surfaces but also aggressive ridges and angles. We like it if it’s a sign that the two-door SUV is bound to make a comeback.

The Habaniro is Kia's Spicy New Crossover Concept

The Habaniro is Kia’s Spicy New Crossover Concept

It’s the "everyday" concept we didn’t know we wanted

Kia’s been on a roll with its concept vehicles lately. A month after unveiling the “Imagine by Kia” Concept and its 21 digital screens at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, the Korean automaker took its traveling concept carnival to New York where it unveiled the Habaniro, a concept it claims is the world’s first-ever ECEV, as in “everyday car, electric vehicle.” The Habaniro is a bold concept. It’s also imaginative in terms of Kia’s vision for the future. Kia didn’t explicitly say that the Habaniro will never see the light of production day, but don’t expect it to arrive anytime soon. For now, the Habaniro is a concept that previews the direction Kia wants to take with its electrification and mobility efforts. Whether that future includes a production version of the Habaniro remains to be seen, but it’d be nice to wish for it, right?

2019 Kia Mohave Masterpiece Concept

2019 Kia Mohave Masterpiece Concept

The concept’s name brings serious pressure on Kia’s part to deliver

Most of us in the U.S. are familiar with Kia’s new large SUV, the Telluride. But just because the Telluride has arrived, that doesn’t mean we should completely ignore Kia’s other large SUV, the Mohave. It’s easy to forget about the Mohave because it’s not sold in the U.S. It was back then as the Borrego, but Kia discontinued that line when it introduced the Sorrento in 2011. But the Mohave SUV has lived on in other parts of the world, including in Kia’s home country of South Korea. It just so happened that the Seoul Motor Show was the site where Kia unveiled the next-generation, concept-form Mohave, called the Mohave Masterpiece Concept. The new concept shared the stage with the Kia Signature Concept and the Imagine Concept that made its global début at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show in early March. The Mohave Masterpiece Concept took center stage, though, in part because it signals the arrival of another full-sized SUV that may or may not arrive in the U.S. market. There’s no timetable for when the production version of the concept hits production, but based on how the concept it looks like, the Mohave Masterpiece Concept looks like it’s ready to hit the streets of the world anytime soon.

2019 Kia Sp Signature Concept

2019 Kia Sp Signature Concept

An exercise in minute changes that will only be noticed by the Sherlocks of the automotive world

One year after introducing the SP Concept at the Delhi Auto Show in India last year, Kia now presents the SP Signature version at the 2019 Seoul Auto Show. Both preview the South Korean automaker’s upcoming compact SUV that was originally slated to go on sale in India only but will now be sold globally, including in the U.S. The production model will be assembled in India, and it might make its world debut in production form as early as next month when the New York Auto Show kicks off.

The market is still crazy about crossovers and SUVs of almost any kind, and every manufacturer wants a piece of the action. Kia is becoming stronger and stronger in some regions of the world like Asia and the Middle East, but the company would like to grow its global footprint. One step in that direction might just be this new compact crossover SUV, rumored to be called ’Tusker’ once it hits production, although it might be sold under other monikers too (like Trazor or the SP2i). It will most likely be powered by a 1.5-liter, four-pot, some markets getting the option of a diesel unit. The engine will probably be mated to an automatic transmission although a manual isn’t off the table right now. Kia’s new vehicle will rival the Hyundai Creta (also known as the ix25) in India, a model we never got in the U.S. because it was deemed as too conservative as we were offered the Hyundai Kona.

2019 ‘Imagine by Kia' Electric Concept Previews a Promising Design Future for Kia

2019 ‘Imagine by Kia’ Electric Concept Previews a Promising Design Future for Kia

Just don’t take those 21 digital screen seriously

Kia caused a stir in the weeks leading up the Geneva Motor Show with a teaser image that featured no less than 21 digital screens in its concept. Judgment day finally arrived and the concept, called Imagine by Kia, turned out to be quite the contradiction in it of itself. On the surface, the concept looks the part of a real concept, and a beautiful one, too. It’s emotional in a sense that it makes you feel something about, which, I suppose, is what Kia was going for in the first place. But just as the concept’s exterior looks the part of one, the interior takes the concept-car ideology to a different. At the end of the day, Imagine by Kia is the automaker’s first EV concept. That still counts for a lot of things from an automaker that’s slowly building upon its electrification plans for the future. How that future will look is up to Kia. But if Imagine by Kia is a sign of things to come, color us intrigued, if not a little confused.

Kia's New Concept Offers an Overdose of Digital Screens

Kia’s New Concept Offers an Overdose of Digital Screens

We could be looking at one of the best concept cars to appear at the Geneva Motor Show

The race to showcase the fanciest concept interior at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show is heating up, and Kia might be sitting in pole position already. The automaker’s first pure electric four-door passenger car — the name hasn’t been announced yet — is headed to the year’s biggest auto show with 21 screens in tow. That’s not a typo, nor is it a joke. The concept really has 21 screens in the interior. Fortunately, the concept isn’t all about these screens; the exterior also features a unique lights signature, specifically in the front end of the concept. More details are expected to be revealed once the 2019 Geneva Motor Show kicks off on March 7, 2019.

2019 Kia Performance EV Concept

2019 Kia Performance EV Concept

Is the concept previewing a new design language for Kia?

Kia has a few surprises in store for us that it will unveil in full at the 89th Geneva Auto Show and the hottest of them all is this muscular concept that will "get your pulse racing," according to the Korean manufacturer. If it’s a two-door coupe done following the recipe of the Stinger GT, then we’re surely looking forward to it.

Kia let go of two separate teasers almost at the same time in the past couple of days: first, there was a sketch of the upcoming xCeed that’s already been spied testing on wintery roads. The crossover that’s supposed to split the Stonic and the Sportage in terms of size will share its engines with the standard Ceed and PHEV version is to be expected as well. The second teaser, though, is what got us wondering because it doesn’t really resemble anything in Kia’s current portfolio. Is the automaker hinting at a potential shift in its design language or did it just let its European design team based in Frankfurt to have a little fun in the eve of the major Swiss auto show?

2019 Kia K900 DUB Edition

2019 Kia K900 DUB Edition

Kia has brought a bold modified example of its yet to be launched, all-new K900 to the 2018 SEMA show in Las Vegas. The look of the vehicle has been transformed by DUB, a famous name on the aftermarket scene, specializing in big rims and other accessories. However, it seems somebody over at dub is stuck in the year 2002 because the way the car is modified could only be described as droll and old-fashioned by late-2018 standards. Sure, it stands out, but it may not necessarily attract the right kind of attention.

Kia Admits that the Telluride Could Wear K900 Underpinnings

It’s not a foregone conclusion, but there are whispers in the wind

The Kia K900 luxury sedan currently sits as the company’s flagship model. Just don’t expect it to be the only one sitting at that table soon. The Korean automaker’s product planner, Orth Hedrick, hinted that the K900 could be joined by a crossover that will be based on the sedan. Hedrick stopped short of revealing too many details, but his comments brought memories of the Telluride Concept back to the surface. Could it be that Kia’s head product planner is hinting at a production future for the concept SUV that debuted at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show? Stay tuned.

A Kia Concept From Two Years Ago Finally Gets The Green Light

It’s better late than never for the Kia Telluride Concept

Kia’s presence at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show may have centered around the next-generation Forte, but the Korean automaker also used the show to announce plans to build a production version that’s based on a concept it introduced two years ago in the same auto show. For those who don’t remember, Kia bought the Telluride Concept at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show. Now, it says it’s moving forward with building a production version of the concept in the coming years.
