Pops’ Rants: The Chicago Auto Show Is Proof that Lamborghini Is Schizophrenic
Remember how Lamborghini staged an U.S. debut for the Urus at the Museum of Contemporary Art and then ditched the Detroit Auto Show, leaving just a Huracan at the Cobo Center? And how the Italian firm thought that the SUV was too special for the first major auto show of 2018? You probably do, but Lambo apparently forgot all about it, as the Urus is now on display at the Chicago Auto Show. It’s just sitting alone in the corner waiting for visitors that are there for mundane cars they can buy. Makes a lot of sense, right?
Feeling Special: Lambo Unveils Urus at Museum of Art, Ditches Detroit Auto Show
The brand-new Lamborghini Urus, the super SUV that drove almost everyone crazy, made its North American debut in Detroit earlier this week. For a couple of hours or so, because the vehicle was displayed at the Museum of Contemporary Art instead of the Detroit Auto Show. Specifically, Lambo made a separate event, invited a few people to see company CEO Stefano Domenicali give a speech, and then took the Urus away, leaving just an orange Huracan on the show floor. Why? Well, maybe it’s because the Italian firm is too special for the Detroit Auto Show.
2018 Lamborghini Aventador S Roadster
The Lamborghini Aventador is crowned as Lambo’s most iconic model, and since its introduction in 2011, the family has grown considerably. After the base Aventador hit the road, it paved the way for models like the Aventador J, the LP 750-4 SuperVeloce, the Dreamliner Edition, and was even used as the basis for cars like the Veneno and Centenario. By the time late 2016 came around, the car that was responsible for the aforementioned models – and replaced the Murcielago in the lineup – was due for an update that brought about a revamping of the car’s aerodynamics and its chassis to go along with a mild update to power output as well. Now, in early September of 2017 – at least a month before the new 2018 Aventador S will be delivered to the first customers – Lambo has decided to present us with the Aventador S Roadster, a topless version of the new S that is destined to stand out next to its less-frisky counterpart by means of unlimited headroom packed into a head-turning package.
So that sounds good and all, but what does it really mean? Well, it means that the world’s only super sports roadster with a mid-rear V-12 is its own standalone model that’s highly customizable with five different interior configurations, and an unlimited choice of exterior colors via the Ad Persona program. It takes four-wheel drive to an all-new level alongside things like the active suspension system, four-wheel steering system, and Lambo’s classic LDS and LMS systems that were revised specifically for the Aventador S Roadster. So, even though the Aventador S Coupe is still fairly fresh in our minds, it’s time to take a good look at its topless counterpart. And, you better hurry if you want to be informed – this baby makes its first official debut to the masses at none other than the 2017 Frankfurt Auto Show.

2017 Lamborghini Huracan Perfomante
After ten successful years on the market, during which it became the company’s best-selling sports car ever, the Lamborghini Gallardo was replaced by the Huracan in 2014. Boasting a new design inside and out, a revised drivetrain, and better performance, the Huracan hit the sports car market with a bang, selling more than 1,500 units in 2014 and more than 4,700 in 2016. With some 8,500 examples sold as of early 2017, it sure looks as if the Huracan will surpass the Gallardo’s 14,022-unit record sales in a few years. However, Lambo knows that resting on its laurels isn’t the best thing to do so it’s hard at work to expand the Huracan family. The latest model to join the lineup goes by the name Performante and made its global debut at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show.
As the name suggests, the Performante is a higher performance version of the standard Huracan and a successor to the Gallardo Superleggera. Although it was originally believed that the Huracan will also get a Superleggera badge, Lambo eventually decided to replace it with Performante. The name swap is rather surprising given that the high-performance Aventador retained the SuperVeloce name from its predecessor, but I agree that Performante is as fitting as Superleggera for a range-topping sports car.
Overall, the Huracan Performance is a big step forward compared to the Gallardo Superleggera, but it’s also a significant departure from the standard Huracan in terms of aerodynamics and performance. Find out more about it in my review below.

Lamborghini’s World-Beating Huracan Performante Bows in Geneva
The highly anticipated Lamborghini Huracan Performante, the car that put Porsche’s Nurburgring lap record to shame, was unveiled at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show. Based on the already popular Huracan, the Performance is pretty much a successor to the Gallardo Superleggera, but features more state-of-the-art, race-bred technology than any other Lambo to date.
Designed with lightness and aerodynamics in mind, the Huracan Performante is significantly more aggressive than its standard sibling, sporting an aero kit that feels at home on the race track. This is obvious from the first moment you lay your eyes on the car, but what’s underneath the paint is even more amazing. With certain body panels made from aluminum and Lambo’s very own forged composite, which consists of chopped carbon fibers in a resin, the Performante is no fewer than 40 kg (88 pounds) lighter that the Huracan.
Not only that, but it’s also more powerful, with the naturally aspirated, 5.2-liter V-10 being upgraded to produce 631 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque. That’s 29 extra horses and an additional 18 pound-feet of twist over the standard Huracan. With a weight distribution ratio of 43/57 front to rear, the Performante needs only 2.9 seconds to hit 62 mph from a standing start, which makes it three tenths quicker than the regular supercar. Charging to 124 mph takes an amazing 8.9 seconds, while braking from 62 mph to a full stop takes place in only 31 meters (101.7 feet).
Inside, the Huracán Performante comes with a new digital instrument cluster configurable for Strada, Sport, and Corsa modes, while offering data on downforce and drag. The new infotainment system also includes Apple CarPlay and iPhone apps, as well as Lamborghini’s telemetry system, which allows the driver to record, replay, and study his own performance.
“The Huracán Performante is the convergence of technological developments to produce a car delivering perfect performance,” says Automobili Lamborghini Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Stefano Domenicali. “This new car represents the powerhouse of Lamborghini DNA and innovation, and a 360 degree approach to creating class-leading super sports cars. It illustrates the pinnacle of Lamborghini V10 production car performance to date, on both track and road, and is perfectly exemplified by its name: Lamborghini Huracán Performante.”
Pricing for the Huracan Performante starts at $274,390 in the U.S., with deliveries to commence this summer.

2018 Lamborghini Huracan By Italdesign
Lambo introduced us to its Huracan hurricane in 2014 as a replacement for the seemingly endlessly popular Lamborghini Gallardo. With the Gallardo’s successful past looming large, the Huracan had some mighty big shoes to fill, tasked with becoming the Italian automaker’s best-selling model in the lineup. So far, the Huracan has done well in that regard, thanks in no small part to a surprising number of special edition models and limited runs. Now, joining the list is this new special edition from Italdesign, an engineering and design company based out of Moncalieri that decided the Raging Bull just wasn’t angry enough from the factory. As such, Italdesign gave the Huracan this wild-looking all-composite exterior treatment, transforming the Lambo into something that looks like it was plucked from an arcade racing game frequented by Ritalin-toting ADD cases. Only five will be produced, with production slated to stop by the end of the year.
Coinciding with the release of the limited-run Huracan, Italdesign, which has worked closely with Lambo in the past, is also introducing the Italdesign Automobili Speciali brand, so it’s likely we’ll see similar treatments sometime in the near future.
Italdesign says its upgraded Huracan is “intended for collectors and visionary enthusiasts, [and] it combines racing car features and performance alongside type-approval for use on normal roads.”
Sure thing, Italdesign. Because after all, who wouldn’t wanna drive a race-ready Lambo down to the shops for a quart of milk?
This customized Lambo will make its debut at the Geneva International Motor Show alongside an exclusive Excalibur Spider timepiece from watchmaker Roger Dubuis, signaling a collaborative partnership between the two companies. No price has been announced for the car, but rest assured it’s firmly in the “if you have to ask” category. As reference, the “normal” Lamborghini Huracan retails for about $230,000, give or take.

Lamborghini’s Cooking Up A Hot Sauce Surprise, Possibly For Detroit: Video
We’re about three weeks away until the calendar flips over to another year. And with 2017 just around the corner, it’s not at all surprising to see automakers begin their preparations ahead of the year’s first major auto event, the North American International Auto Show. We know very little at this point on what to expect in Detroit, but one automaker has just given us a taste of one thing that we can look forward to as we count down the days to the event.
This teaser video, provided to us by Lamborghini, is promising big things. Sure, it didn’t explicitly say that the teaser leads up to Detroit, but we can assume as much given the timetable we have at this point in the calendar. Apparently, the Italian automaker has some big plans on the horizon, and these plans are likely tied up to what could be the next iteration of its range-topping V-12 engine.
Is it going to be a new supercar concept featuring the new V-12 engine? Is it going to be just the engine and nothing else? Is it going to be the long-awaited mid-cycle facelift of the Lamborghini Aventador, of which we’ve seen spy shots of the car in various settings in recent months? Heck, is it a mystery car with a repositioned V-12 engine?
That’s a lot of questions to ask, but very few answers to come by. What’s clear at this point though is that a new and possibly more modern version of a V-12 engine is going to be involved since that’s pretty much all the teaser video alluded to.
Take your pick on the possible scenarios that Lamborghini’s teasing us with, but given that kind of treatment on the teaser video, we can at least expect to see something big coming out of Sant’Agata Bolognese.

Lamborghini Huracan RWD Spyder Goes Topless In LA
When Lamborghini unveiled the Huracan LP580-2 at the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show, a lot of people immediately assumed that a topless version would soon follow. One year later, and at the exact same auto show no less, the Huracan LP580-2 Spyder has arrived.
The good news is that a lot of things about the coupe version of the sports car remains on the soft-top roof version, most notably the naturally-aspirated 5.2-liter V-10 engine that produces 580 horsepower and 398 pound-feet of torque. Yep, it may have lost a hard roof, but it still packs the same amount of power as the coupe version.
More good news comes in the form of the tech, which is to say that the Huracan LP580-2 Spyder has loads of it, beginning with the Adaptive Network Intelligent Management system (ANIMA), which the driver can control through specific buttons on the steering wheel and choose among a slew of driving modes - Strada, Sport, or Corsa - to suit their preference.
A lot of things about the Huracan LP580-2 Spyder set it up to be the kind of performance-oriented sports car that its coupe counterpart is. That said, the spyder weighs 264 pounds more than the coupe version and that shows itself in the car’s performance times, specifically the 3.6-second time from 0 to 60 mph. That’s 0.2 seconds slower that the coupe version.
Still, everyone knows that the slower acceleration is the price you pay for having a roof retracting mechanism on the car. Either way, it’s still a blisteringly quick and it’s still a Lamborghini Huracan. That’s more than what other performance cars can say about themselves.

Bentley, Lamborghini Add Themselves To Paris No-Shows
The Volkswagen Group has announced that two of its premium brands, Bentley and Lamborghini, are skipping the 2016 Paris Motor Show next week in an attempt to cut spending to help soften the blow of the costs it is incurring stemming from the diesel emissions scandal.
The exit of Bentley and Lamborghini comes a week after other brands announced their intention to skip the show. Aston Martin, Ford, and Rolls-Royce, and Volvo also won’t be attending the event for various reasons, including cost-cutting, revised auto show strategies, and in Volvo’s case, changing business priorities. The two VW brands are touting similar reasons for dropping out of the event. Bentley, for instance, said that it would put its focus on attending smaller auto shows where it can market its products more directly to its clientele. For its part, Lamborghini is adopting a similar strategy of picking its spots more carefully in the future, including attending auto shows in strategic locations where the market for its performance cars are the strongest.
The mass withdrawal among automakers that have been regular attendees at the Paris Motor Show can be attributed to a number of different reasons. Bentley and Lamborghini, in addition to their own specific reasons, are both tied into the affairs of the Volkswagen Group, which is still reeling from the diesel emissions scandal that has cost the conglomerate hundreds of millions of dollars. Add that to the enormous costs of simply attending an auto show as high-profile as Paris and the decision to skip the event in an effort to save some money is a prudent choice to make.

2016 Mecum Monterey Auction – Preview
Mecum Auctions has been involved with collector cars for almost three decades now, growing from a small family business to selling roughly 20,000 lots per year. In addition to top-dollar automobiles, Mecum also offers vintage motorcycles, collectible road art, and believe it or not, tractors. But you and I don’t really care about all that other stuff – we’re in it for the cars, from cutting-edge performance machines to ironclad muscle cars, antique classics to no-frills racers. Thankfully, Mecum has the entire spread on tap. The auction house averages more than one event per month, but one of the biggest is in California for Monterey Car Week. Roughly 600 vehicles are slated to hit the block for 2016, and we’ve got some of the most interesting of them profiled right here.
Highlighting the lineup for Monterey is the Modern Speed Collection, a host of ultra-high-end speed-mobiles from the present day. Mecum calls it “the apex of 21st Century automotive performance,” and picking through the offerings, I’m inclined to agree. Think rare, gorgeous, and absurdly quick.

2016 Lamborghini Huracán LP 610-4 Spyder
Launched for the 2015 model year as a successor to the very popular Gallardo, the 2015 Lamborghini Huracan LP610-4 has already received a couple of race-ready versions: the 2015 Lamborghini Huracan LP620-2 Super Trofeo and the 2015 Lamborghini Huracan GT3. But to be able to replace the Gallardo completely, the Huracan needs to spawn even more iterations, including a Roadster and a lighter, Superleggera model. At the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Italians have finally unveiled the drop-top version, dubbed thee Huracan LP 610-4 Spyder.
With the 2015 McLaren 650S Spider already on the street and with Ferrari having just unveiled the 2016 Ferrari 488 Spider as a successor to the iconic 2012 Ferrari 458 Spider, Lamborghini had no choice but to bring its very own drop-top to the party earlier than it did with the Gallardo.
And so it did, as the Huracan Spider arrived only a year after the coupe broke cover, whereas the Gallardo needed about three years to receive an open-top version. Keep reading for the full rundown.

2016 Lamborghini Centenario
Sometime in the 1960s, a successful tractor builder in northern Italy bought a Ferrari 250 GT. Unfortunately, he didn’t think much of it. So, he brought his complaints directly to Enzo Ferrari, who responded by telling him he should stick to building tractors. After the rude dismissal, Ferruccio Lamborghini decided he could do better and started his own car company.
2016 is the year of Ferruccio’s 100th birthday, so to mark the milestone, Lamborghini built a limited-production supercar as a tribute to the company’s founder. The Centenario, was reportedly shown to prospective buyers as a 3D hologram model during the 2015 Monterey Car Week and has now officially made its debut at the Geneva Auto Show. Only 20 units in coupe form and 20 units in roadster form will be built, with all 40 units already spoken for prior to its debut.
Stephan Winkelmann, President and CEO of Lamborghini, said, “The Centenario is a car that perfectly combines tradition and innovation. It looks to the future while honoring the legend that is Ferruccio Lamborghini. The Centenario is an opportunity for our designers and engineers to transcend some of the constraints of series car production to achieve an incomparable result: the Centenario has immediately proved itself as a desirable collectors’ car, while demonstrating new Lamborghini technologies and outstanding performance. It is the most fitting tribute to Ferruccio Lamborghini in his centenary year: a man who created an exceptional brand, believed that anything was possible, and produced extraordinary, iconic cars. The Centenario is a super sports car for Ferruccio Lamborghini and the future he and we believe in today.”
So, with that said, let’s dive on in a take a look at Lamborghini’s new Centenario and see if we can discover why, outside of its limited production run, it was able to sell out so quickly.
